- Joker: Composer Hildur Guðnadóttir & Director of Photography Lawrence Sher Interview
I don't think a lot of people predicted that Todd Phillips' Joker would become the first R-Rated movie to pass one billion dollars at the worldwide box office. While everyone knew the film would do well after the thunderous reviews came out of the Venice and Toronto Film Festivals, what Joker has done around the world is nothing short of a monumental achievement. And while almost all the praise ends up on Joaquin Phoenix’s shoulders due to his Oscar worthy performance, making any movie is a team effort, especially when talking about the music and cinematography.
Like all of you, when I first saw Joker I was blown away by composer Hildur Guðnadóttir’s brilliant score and director of photography Larry Sher’s fantastic cinematography. The way the music plays over Phoenix’s mesmerizing performance, and how Sher captured his spontaneous approach to the character, had me on the edge of my seat. Both of them brought their A-game to the film and they’re part of the reason the movie has broken all sorts of records.
As a big fan of both of their work, I was extremely happy when they came by the Collider studio for an extended interview on the making of Joker. They talked about the massive worldwide success, how the project came together, the way Guðnadóttir came up with the music and how they used it on set when filming, if they think the events in the film actually happened, deleted scenes, filming the ending, what it’s like trying to film an actor who likes to improvise, and so much more.

Composer of Joker AND Chernobyl . Amazing talent
JOKER score is the Best SCORE i heard in recent days
eh...
C-MC Official eh personal opinion
Jack Joel, absolutely haunting! I will never forget Joaquin's improvised dance of transformation in the bathroom scene!
Hildur should do shazam 2
It’s so unique and different. Most of the films has this same tone action scene scores, i am tired of it but then joker score came, it was amazing.
They both deserve an oscar so much. Their work on Joker was breathtaking.
Todd Phillips and Craig Mazin, director and writer of The Hangover 1-3, go and make Joker and Chernobyl, both using Hildur Guðnadóttir to score their work. It's so cool to see filmmakers do a 180 and make something incredible and different from their previous work.
True
Lawrence Sher is going to be the cinematographer on Black Adam, that's pretty awesome.
I definitely see a lot of wide screen gold and black palets
Hope they will hire Guðnadóttir as the composer for Black Adam as well
Hope they both win Oscar's come February
they won't . Hollywood and Oscars are corrupted
Score category yes but I don't think Lawrence will win for Cinematography but at least he got Nominated.
The contribution that the music and cinematography make to Joker is immerse. They both deserve recognition for what they've done.
Joaquin rightfully gets recognized for carrying the acting on his shoulders but the score and cinematography really took it to the next level too.
They succeeded in capturing the grimy late 70s/early 80s “Gotham” feel and the isolated, claustrophobic nature of Arthur’s life. A shot that always comes back to me is Arthur backstage at the Murray show watching himself be mocked yet again for what he believes is the last time. The colors in that scene were fantastic.
And the score was everything Arthur was. Dark, haunting, but strangely wistful, twistedly triumphant. I love how the main Call Me Joker song ends with the simple melancholy notes of the bathroom song. Reminding us of the painful nature of the character and his transformation even while he’s finally having his grand moment.
When i hear the sounds of what seems like a bull or a cow or a giant lamb reminds me of the jesus born image in the barn around animals because i think its what went through hindur's mind if knowing Joaquin is vegan an animal activist.
Lawrence sher just won the golden frog at the Camerimage film festival 2019. It's the Highest award given to cinematography. Let's hope he wins the Oscar
TheOne I think Hildur is also nominated for 2019 Hollywood Music in Media Award.
@@k.vn.k she won an Emmy for Chernobyl and a Venezia Prize for Best Music Composition.
ElRadioDJ913 if only I had 10% the talent of these people 😭
@@k.vn.k You have an another talent...I have to find it, you will
Maybe better than them
Deakins is going to win for 1917
This movie is beyond academy awards, its influence in films to come will be testimony of how important this piece of art is.
And some critics are still hate it with passion
Academy Awards or not, this movie has absolutely everything to be both Classic and cult film. Cult even though when it is such a box office hit.
It had a huge impact on pop culture
lar hjp it’s also a spark of a revolution in some areas of the world or a use to help their revolutions
I can listen to Hildur talking for hours
Both are amazing talents. But I must say that Hildur is an exceptional being that radiates an impressive energy. Just love her.
Best score and best cinematography.
How great it is to feel the creativity energy in the room with both of these people. Adding that to Joaquin and you get the best movie of the year.
they are both outstanding professionals
Joker had a very haunting music. It was a very different kind of music than what John Williams or Hans Zimmer do, yet it felt perfect for this kind of story!
two future oscar winners
Rodycaz :)
The real question people should ask is: how should John Travolta pronounce "Hildur Guðnadóttir?"
Is travolta hosting the Oscar's?
hcm9999 the wickedly talented
its actually not that hard to pronounce hildur guðnadóttir
I've missed watching the Oscars for several years now. I am definitely now going to miss the next one! I would live to see Joker sweep up just about every category.
I think Larry is the most interesting cinematographer I really like listening to him like I would with Roger deakins
When they are start talking about the ending bloody smile scene - I am smiling so big. In terms of score, cinematography and acting - I think that scene achieve a pinnacle of perfection in the cinema history because of these three factors.
Same. One of the best scenes of one of the best movies in recent history
This interview is great. More fans of this film need to see it. I'm a huge fan of both of them. Absolute masterpiece! This movie is very special in so many ways.
Fastest I’ve ever clicked on a collider video in a very long time. Get Todd!! But this was if not just as good.learned so much!
I'm gonna have to study these two their work was unforgettable in this film
Great interview Frosty.
What a pleasant time with such talented, relaxed, and enthusiastic artists. hope they go to the Show in February
These 2 are the real MVPs! Great interview!
The music was SO GOOD.
Glad that Hildur won the Best Original Score category! Score, Cinematography, and Joaquin's acting were the strongest things about the movie
Amazing to see that even the composer truly understands what the movie is and what makes it stand out to other recent Marvel/DC movies. Likely one of the reasons her score was spot-on.
This is a true example of the universe aligning the best way possible. The actor. The DP. The director. The composer. Absolutely brilliant!
They both really elevated the film and made it so unique! They deserve all of the praise and accolades for Joker, and I look forward to more of their work in the future!!
Johann Johannsson is proud of Hildur especially when she composed Soldado, Mary Magdalene, and now this DC classic. And the cinematography is one of the best looking stuff compared to Greig Fraser's terrific imagery. I hope they win their Oscar.
DC classic? Nothing to do with DC. Thankfully...
awesome OST also the song choices to those particular scenes are great..... great cinematography, wise color selection. such a masterpiece work by all.
Many People actually want a good story fighting and stuff are for people who just cant concentrate loved the music and style of I combines with the movie
They are amazing! They both deserve Oscar recognition for their job in "Joker"!
This just made me more in love and obsessed with this film,...OMG
23:41
Please listen to how the cinematic masterpiece of an ending Joker was scored broken down by the goddess herself Hildur.
and now it reach 1 Billion for R rated movie and without china's help
The best working cinema composer
37:35 the hint that he will shoot Black Adam
Just shows the people who devalue comicbook films at we are mostly invested in for the characters and the stories not just the action and spectacle that we can watch films like Logan and Joker.
Respect
Can you please do more of them? I’d love one for Knives Out.
Not to be disminishing the photo director (who made a FANTASTIC JOB TOO) but I think Joker caused so much impact because of Joaquin's performance and Hildur's score. I mean, it's haunting, unsettling, disturbing, powerful and intense. At some point it becomes epic, bosterous and agressive. Gave the film the proper tone to make it even better.
If they had used only Sinatras' or any rock 70s, 80s songs it would have made the movie look as a mockery to violence in society, cynic and sarcastic and even darkly funny as a Tarantino film. But no, the score changed the tone
Gosh I loved her... She’s amazing
Brilliant Team Todd had
Chernobyl has been on my vague list of things to see but knowing she scored it, I’m going to make it a priority.
This Guy Larry could have his own podcast
It has now made $B
19:01 please include that scene in the bluray version as an extra!
I would love to hear her compose a Dr. Doom theme if Marvel ever gives him his own movie.
I dont know that hildur is a woman...shes doing a really great job!!! Well done!!
TheOrisya What??
He even talked about endgame ❤️👍
That Trading Places Tee-Shirt rules bro.
Her laugh. I can't.
What was the show she mentioned liking at the very end?
+ « Coolest Interview With Larry & What A Nicely Lady Is Hildur !! »
100% X3
Who could think this sweet woman made such dark scores like Chernobyl and Joker
23:40 Lawrence you sarcastic bitch, I love you. 😂
Wow, I can't believe this interview has so few views. :(
Why are they so shocked that the 'audiences' are capable of appreciating good cinema??
Probably because the oversaturation of CGI-fest superhero movies has made a lot of people expect only that when watching a movie based on a comic character.
@@Elena-yv6cx But they are the ones who take the call to inflict CGI overkill on us. So tired of them being cut off from true public sentiments.
Because it is movie without green screen and action. It also without big blockbuster scenes and has a little budget. It is R-rated dark thriller/drama with one brilliant performance. So even Warner Brothers thought it would not make many money.
@@kristinaant9747 They should fire their market research team.
I found the Villeneuve movie "Enemy" to be quite empty; because the logic of it was so fuzzy it was easiest to say, "Whelp, none of it happened!" Contrast that with 2005's La Mustache which is about a character who is just as confused as we are the whole time, the audience isn't waiting until the end to find out shit's crazy, the movie is about the feeling of being crazy and living with it --- it doesn't BECOME about this only at the end, it's the lesson the entire way through.
Incredible, this chick composed the Joker score. I thought it would be some old dude with a white beard.
It wouldn't be so amazing like her work. We women are more artistic than men, because we feel so much easier.
Márcia Oliveira gender doesn’t matter. Both could have done well. Obviously here Hildur did a phenomenal job. But if you genuinely believe that men can’t compose as well as women, then I would highly suggest looking up Hans Zimmer. His style is similar to Hildur’s and it’s quite amazing.
@@marcia8789 another whamen crying
Now it’s the first R rated movie to hit 1 billion world wide.
I’m still not sure what happened there at the end of Joker... lol.
Anyone else think hildur is rather cute?
*PUT ON A HAPPY FACE*
What have you done to your nails dude ahaha...?
Frosty and his black colored nails.
Spider-man's girlfriend made the music for Joker. Amazing!
She remind me of Stewie Griffin on 8:18
2:25 shots fired at marvel
right off the bat with an irrelevant question
the first hour of Endgame was amazing , the last 2 hours was a dumb movie
Only 3rd act was good
Hi tom
no name show
Lawrence is right... I was so FUCKING DISAPPOINTED with this movie
23:00 what's with the sex noises?
Great interview though
Hmm that ladies sounds Russian or maybe polish Russian accent are sexy
She's Icelandic, you can tell by the Icelandic name.
+ Yeah , Yeah .... XDXD *
@@MadameiMercyJeanX__ it's crazy 😆
Her score is phenomenal but endgame score is phenomenal too... Gonna be hard for her to win that oscar
You must be kidding right?? ENDGAME HAS THE BEST VFX...BUT NOT THE SCORE....JOKER HAS THE BEST SCORE
Please say sike...😐
Well I gues everyone have their own tastes...
@@Am-zf3gq Alan Silvestre score is phenomenal quit hating
@@madamepersonne7728 did u listen to Alan Silvestri score? That's phenomenal
The exceptionally unnerving experience she gave us in the Joker and Chernobyl is just second to none. Given the right situations, Hildur could kill you with her horse tail strings used in cello.
