Lawrence Sher's cinematography in this film was amazing, and ny first reaction to Joker was extreme awe because it felt like I was a fly on the wall watching Arthur rebel against his environment and become who he wanted to be the entire time, even if it wasn't anyone great. From Todd Phillips' direction to the career-defining performance by Joaquin Phoenix, this film genuinely transported me to 1980s Gotham City, and it was hard to leave.

@@KJ9999 Adam Sandler always makes me uncomfortable - but not in an interesting way. I tend to avoid movies if I know he's in them. But I might be wrong when it comes to Uncut Gems since it's not a typical Adam Sandler moronic comedy. Haven't seen it.

I think it's just different tastes. There are so many types of movies and not everyone responds to them in the same way. I personally was not a fan of Joker, but as someone smarter than me once said 'the world would be a boring place if we all agreed'. But my main reaction to the movie was indifference. It left no impression on me and when I left the cinema I quickly forgot about it. Simple as that really.
But if you're interested in some context to my reaction then here it is (apologies in advance for the long rant): The day I saw it I had just finished watching Season 4 of Better Caul Saul, which is such a perfect and beautiful decent into villainy that the Joker just lacked nuance to me (which is likely because movies don't have the time that TV shows do). I'd also watched Salo, or the 120 days of Sodom, Happiness, El Topo and The Piano Teacher that month (and typically like dark films) so there was nothing particularly shocking in Joker and I didn't respond to it in a visceral way.
I love The Master and Joker just seemed like a lesser version of that Joaquin Phoenix performance (sometimes I just watch The Master to gasp in awe at his amazing and unhinged performance). Also when I was younger I was obsessed with Fight Club, so the revolutionary/anti establishment themes in Joker didn't really impact me, I'd seen it all before (although I'm generally a sucker for a revolutionary movie, this one just didn't work for me).
Sometimes I wonder if I'm a bit desensitised to cinema (I'm 35 and I typically watch one movie a day) but then I watch the series finale to The Good Place and burst into tears so I'm clearly not totally broken inside haha. I can see why people responded to Joker and I'm happy that something a bit more interesting is being viewed by a larger audience, but personally I found it all a bit dull and uninteresting. Which of course is not to say I'm right. There is no right or wrong response to art... I really liked Uncut Gems though.

That's funny how I wasn't the only one that was in shock after the movie. I knew I loved it and thought it was amazing, but it did take me a little bit to realize just HOW much I loved it. Then when me and my brother took my dad to go see it, we asked him afterwards if he liked it and he said yeah, but a few hours later, my dad walked back into the house and the first thing he said was, "you know...that movie gets better the more I think about it." And then we talked about the movie for a good hour and we don't do that much at all. He's never said that about a movie before.
He also said it's one of those movies that you can watch over and over again and not get tired of it. I can attest to that because I went to go see it 5 times in theaters and my mom went with me 3 out of those 5 and she loved it too. She said she could watch the last 20 minutes with the Joker scenes over and over again because it was so cool.

I think I was shocked plus had certain expectations of what I thought it would be, and it was completely something I wasn’t expecting. But he’s right I did not have this natural burst of excitement right after. We as audience members aren’t ready for Joaquin’s way of acting. I think he’s evolving the way Marlon Brando, and James Dean changed acting forever ! Joaquin is extremely brilliant with is acting abilities.

He makes a good point about how personal comics can be. With a good comic, most of what’s happening is actually occurring within your imagination; my favorite comics, Watchmen, Scott Pilgrim, and Wolfman/Perez’s Teen Titans run, they work because they give you exactly what you need to imagine the nuance of the story without suffocating you with details unnecessary. That’s the power of comics, IMO; their ability to imply vivid nuance without showing much.
Come to think of it, JOKER replicates this perfectly. My thought walking out of the movie was:
This movie is tailor made for its time. It relies on the political context of today, the context of mental health, the context of superhero movies. People who are disengaged with any one of those things, are not going to get much out of this movie. But people who worry about the state of the world, who study mental health, and who watch a lot of superhero movies; this movie is gonna’ dig up a lot of harsh questions for them. It’s like that cave in Empire Strikes Back; you only get what you bring in with you. If I dare speculate, it seems the critics who are more experienced with a hard life love the movie, while the critics who appear more sheltered and dismissive don’t see much in it. By movie standards, this is a flaw in that the movie is minimalistic and superficial at times, trusting the audience to infer more depth than is actually there; but by comic book standards, this movie is very appropriate in that everyone is gonna’ see something different in it and glean a lot more than could be spelt out conventionally. Though it’s a fairly short movie, it sticks with you the same way a four-hour epic would.

3;16 "The common experience after seeing the movie is one of digesting it and being a little frozen."
Wow. As I sat up in the theater having watched the end that's exactly how I felt. I didn't know what to think. My mind literally wasn't used to seeing something like this done. This isn't a movie an ordinary person claps to on the first viewing.
After watching the descent of a poor soul who you know will go on to do even more horrendous things, it makes sense that at that moment you wouldn't clap. Anybody that was invested probably felt like they just watched a tragedy unfold to an otherwise redeemable person. That in part was thanks to how beautifully everything worked together.
I've never seen a movie of this caliber with music, tone, and scenery, and acting all feeding off one another in perfect sync. Everything was just masterfully done to tell this story.
Most important to me is that it took the audience serious and didn't cater to the mainstream even though they were dealing with a character like Joker. And in the climate DC is in at the moment, it was a bold decision and it payed off.

This movie kept me up at night, not out of fear but just the themes portrayed in the film and how resonating they were to the point where all I could think about for 3 days after the movie, Was the movie! I’ve never had a movie experience like this and I would love to experience it again for the first time!

Not to compare but anybody who understands anything about filmmaking and has seen The Master knows for a fact that Joker was disappointingly just a massive hype with almost no screenwriting, relying on Joaquin alone which was never going to be enough. I know I’ll be in the minority of this but again, anybody who hasn’t grasped the depths of the Master should first see it.

    • @Murmurrr
      @Murmurrr 4 года назад +8

Kushagra Dubey I think it’s fine. You don’t need “depth” you just need to accomplish what you set out to accomplish, and do it well. Art isn’t just being being the most deep, it’s how it affects you. If people connect to the movie, then it’s good art to them and it gives them something to think and talk about.
Compared to say...Ironman, there is more to chew on. Even without comparing Joker to comic characters, the movie stands alone as a compelling and entertaining character study some societal observations.
