@@sdmattressmakers It makes it really difficult to find honest reviews. Even "user" reviews are flooded with positive and rarely show anything negative. There's no way to really tell what a mattress is like without trying it, and a lot aren't available to try in stores. Stores have their own names for each model, or try to say they offer "custom" models that are really just general models from manufacturers. Going into a mattress store feels like a used car dealership most of the time. So people opt to go online, and then buy based on reviews. The "best" mattress is terrible. Then what? I'm currently in a trial period of just that thing. Even from a seemingly "trustworthy" manufacturer. It's really disappointing. All the while, what's comfortable is so subjective. All the tests in the world will not tell you what feels comfortable to you.

I spent 2 hours yesterday at a Mattress Firm. I left there being more confused about what to get than before I got there. The baseboard that vibrates and elevates is just as expensive as the mattress itself. They were quoting me $4,000 - $7,000 for a mattress and baseboard.

I was at Mattress Firm yesterday and I liked a $3,399 mattress from a company located in Virginia and N Carolina. It was on sale for $2,700. By the time I left they offered it to me for $1,800 at cost. The reviews online were not good at all. Left without buying.

I just ordered a queen size (they have king too) adjustable base, which also had massage, usb A & C charging ports, under bed lighting, and phone app. I also found a gel infused foam cooling, motion isolation, medium plush, 12inch full memory foam mattress. It has a bamboo cover to match my bamboo pillows but the mattress happened to come with two pillows as well. It'll deliver in about a week for under $1k so I'll update my experience.

We recently went shopping to upgrade to a king mattress. First, it helps a lot if you know what you want it to feel like. In our case we had gotten a 3" foam to top our queen mattress which was less comfy than it had been in the store. It felt like sleeping on a marshmallow, so we knew we wanted the new one to feel like a marshmallow and told the salesman that. Ok, turns out marshmallows are more expensive than bricks. We were prepared to invest a hefty amount on our long term comfort, then Husband asked why there were the same mattresses on facebook marketplace for half the price. Salesman said they were customer returns (people who don't like marshmallows} and they are cleaned, sanitizes, refurbished and sold at an outlet center. He could order for us and have it delivered, small delivery charge, and we would get the mattress we were prepared to pay $$$$ for $$.

    Disclaimer: I'm in the industry.
Nowhere in a "Price Guarantee" policy have I ever seen verbiage stating the price matched model has to have the same name. Not only do we match based on same or even similar specs, our competition does as well. This is extremely common among retailers. Model name is irrelevant when it comes to price guarantee policies.

I agree with most of your points on pricing, mark up and hype specially on online mattresses. BUT I beg to differ on REAL cooling, one side mattresses and coil counts. I don't know not mentioning those was intentional or out of knowledge.
    - Cooling:
There're mattresses with ACTUAL cooling features where they take away heat from the body for HOURS so you don't sleep hot.
    - One sided Mattresses:
there are actual data that you can buy and keep a mattress up to few DECADES without need to rotate it.
    - Coil Count:
They're countless number of sleepers that a much get better sleep and spinal alignment when they receive better SUPPORT (NOT firmness) So if it's done properly it benefits the sleepers.
    Marketing Gimmick NO. 11:
Do listen to guys who make mattress and pushes you toward their mattresses! LOL😂

Thanks for this guys! would you please tell me a bit more about the gimmicky "cooling technology" I get what you're saying about it and I'm glad i came here bc i was on the verge of letting that cool factor be a determining point!
But what about cooling? I'm shopping to buy a 10" thick hybrid and the top layer on one has your "gel infused" memory foam on the top.
You have me thinking that any and all foam on the topside is going to sleep hot! I heard you mention how cotton and wool tends to be more breathable - so is that what the topmost layer should be made of? Seems that all these $400-$600 'beds in a box' all seem to only have foam on top, so what do i do over here? Buy cool breatheable sheets or what? And is there even such a thing as a heat dissapating mattress? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hi there, been meaning to reply to this sooner before you made a decision.
My heart goes out to you and your situation.
We believe the mattress is the most important piece of furniture in your home.
It is also probably the one purchase you’re going to be in contact with, which will have a great affect on your day.
But we also believe that a mattress purchase shouldn’t break the bank either.
Not sure of your financial situation, but are you able to get the same relief from a less expensive mattress that still has good quality components?
In your case, I would consider an adjustable base with a mattress that maybe not as expensive as the Kingsdown, but still has great pressure relief with good quality materials.
The adjustable base will give you a whole other element when it comes to support and comfort that you can fine tune it a bit more to fit your body, that a mattress alone is not able to accomplish.
Also because of your situation I would definitely only purchase if there is some trial period or option in case the mattress does not work out.
I hate promoting financing, but if you’re not able to find relief with anything less expensive, I may consider financing it with 24-36 months to make it easier on the budget, if it is going to help you sleep better and wake up pain free.
I hope this helps, feel free to call the store if you’d like.
      Thanks for reaching out.

    Just bought a new Intellibed.
The myth of mattresses weighing twice as much in time was there, for the sake of selling a mattress protector. But, to me, the primary reason to get the mattress protector is to not run afoul of warranty coverage, and, keeping truly bad things from happening to the mattress. It's not a lightweight mattress, but hey, I don't need to carry it around daily (I do wish I had handles for rotating it, it's true, but hey, it was the most comfortable).
I dimly remember something mentioned about coils, but that wasn't something I worried about. The cooling phase change gel, well, that's interesting to some degree, but the breathability was the biggest one I was looking at.
And, it was the most comfortable. A couple nights sleeping on it thus far, no pressure points, yay! I'm a side-sleeper with shoulder issues that can't be fully fixed, only managed. And yes, the mattress I chose made no claims about being the-one-true-mattress, but more aimed at side-sleepers for tuning.

But they are beds I would wake up extremely sore on and wouldn't be able to get comfortable on. So much for sleep experts, most these people don't care what your preferences are.

if you want a mattress that will be soft and not wear out( loose its shape), use a low pressure hospital mattress. they have mattresses that are bariatric, and can be ordered in 500 pound weight/ 900 pound weight capacity( standard hospital mattress cap. is 350 pound limit). the other nice thing is, these mattresses are rebuildable, so you can replace only what is worn out. the cost of these mattresses are about 200-300 dollar price range( the price will fluctuate depending on what is ordered). I worked in a hospital years ago, now retired, and I had back surgery ,and I only use, a low pressure hospital mattress. this got me off of all pain killer meds. these mattresses are so nice, you will fall asleep, and wake up in the same position , and you will not even want to get out of bed( your not on it, you are in it). if you are interested, you can get in contact with CASCO MANUFACTURING SOLUTIONS' 1-800-843-1339 OR YOU CAN GO ONLINE WWW.CASCOMFG.COM they will" sell to anyone", and build your mattress any way you want it built. their main business is building mattresses for hill- rom/ stryker( they make hospital beds)/ hospitals ect.. if you have any questions, you can respond back to me if you like. I will NEVER visit a mattress store, they are so over priced, and sell junk!!!.

Looking for a good king sized bed. The brands nectar and dreamcloud, both owned by the resident home have very mixed reviews. Some even say, depending on where it was manufactured contained fiberglass.

    • @donaldbunnell7003

We just went through 30 days of hell after ordering a Dreamcloud split king with adj frame. Ordered June 20 and was supposed to be delivered to local white glove company by June 30. The company web site tracking and the DHL trucking company both show the items were delivered on July 1.
We have called daily to see where our order is, and they keep telling us they still haven't received the frames. The Dreamcloud CS agents are not there to help, they just make excuses and lie. We were told on at least a dozen time that they understand and would turn the complaint over to their team and we would receive a call in a day or two. Never have we ever received a call back from them, it's just a delay tactic.
We were promised a deliver date, one time, and I waited a week for that date to arrive and called the day before to make sure the delivery was still on, and was assured it was and they had the order ready to go, so I took my bed apart and moved it into the garage, moved all the furniture out of the way and we, an 80 year old couple, have been sleeping on the floor for the last five nights because they never showed up and when we called, they told us they didn't have the whole order.
I finally called Dreamcloud this morning and told them if they don't give me a refund I will file a dispute claim with my bank and they will suck the money back from the company. That got quick results as I was issued a refund within minutes.
At first they told me they couldn't refund the $400 White Glove charge until I explained they had not preformed the service. The service was to deliver and set up the mattress and frame and remove the old mattress. They ten decided to refund that cost also. Everything is a fight with them.
So now, as soon as I click send, we are going out mattress shopping once again. It will be a local store that I can go into to complain if I have a problem, no more online mattress stores that hold you captive once they have your money.

The double the weight? I tell customers that if true, mattress delivery crews would need a team of 3 since the mattresses would be so heavy you would need extra muscle to move.
Also, many people have mattresses that are 15-30 years old. Following along, these mattresses would weigh 200lbs to 300lbs.
Considering the average new mattress weighs 75lbs.

    2. Two-side mattress. Outer layers are made of different foam than its core, for a reason. What is going to happen with this outer layer when it is put at very bottom of matters. It will use up because it must support not only you, but also whole mattress weight + it resides on frame.
Analogy to car wheels. It would be like solid tire vs tire with 2 sides where both sides uses up in same time as you drive a car. I'd rather pick solid tire that last longer
    I am delusional?

Coil count not a big deal, but what is the deal is what are/is the AWG of the coils, where they are placed and how many turns per coil. Also coils are replacing the foam or latex, which could be a CHEAPER alternative then latex, and the latex if Talalay is more expensive the Dunlop, thoughDunlop is a litter firmer. And very few mention ILD's!

The biggest ripoff I seen was guaranteed on mattress and got a adjustable base and when I didn’t like the mattress after 90 days which I had to keep it for before they would give me a full refund they would not honor the purchase of the adjustable base

I bought a Leesa before they made all the other styles the currently offer now. It’s an absolute piece of trash. I need to get rid of it asap. It barely lasted a couple years.

Ok points 1 and 2 aren't necessarily gimmicks. Proper, quality, phase change cooling materials do make a difference in sleep contact temps long term (past 15-20 minutes), especially for more temperature sensitive people, and hotter climates. There are BS gimmicks though, so I guess it depends, just don't fall for the BS...mostly ignore the "infused with", and make sure they actually have proper phase change materials. As for the "no flip" mattresses, it's not a gimmick to give you half the mattress of the past. It's that by having them single sided they can better tune the mattress performance through various multiple layers and zones, along with added edge support, and directional cooling. The old school flip style mattresses had much simpler construction, without most of the newer features, materials, and benefits. Btw...same for tires, generally higher performance tires can be directional, meaning you can't just rotate the wheels with tires on them to the other side. You'd have to remount the tires to have the tire on the other side of the car...with these types of tires you generally just rotate them front to back, but no point in crossing them (unless you know of, or specifically run different suspension geometry on different corners of the car, for specific use cases).

If you want a mattress that is cold then get a full size tall air mattress. I slept on one when I was taking care of my Mom. It was always cold no matter how many blankets I put under the sheets.
