While My Guitar Gently Weeps- The Beatles (Guitar Cover)

Thanks to Peter Siegel for lending me this original 1966 Guild Starfire XII !
Eric Clapton famously played lead guitar on this song. After recording an acoustic version, then a rock take with a backwards guitar solo, George decided to bring in his friend Eric for a third version of Gently Weeps. This made the other Beatles, notably Paul and John become more invested in the song. Eric used a 1957 Gibson Les Paul Standard, nicknamed Lucy because it was refinished in cherry red and he thought of Lucille Ball's fiery red hair. Eric gave this guitar to George, who used it for the rest of his career
The backing track (September 5th, 1968) consisted of George on Gibson J-200 acoustic and vocals, Paul on piano, Ringo on drums, Eric on lead guitar, and John on organ. You can hear an outtake on the 2018 White Album box set. Afterwards, many overdubs were recorded onto the track the following day, Sept 6th
There is some discussion about who overdubbed bass on this song, and which guitars are played during the bridge. My theory is that Paul played Fender Jazz Bass for the entire song, and either John or George played a Fender Bass VI (six string bass), only on the bridge. I believe John played a Guild Starfire XII 12-string electric on the bridge as well. George and John no longer used their Rickenbackers, and there are pictures from the White Album sessions of John with his Guild 12-string
Some fan theories say that John played Bass VI for the entire song, or that Paul and him played two basses in unison for the whole song. Listening to the isolated tracks, I only hear one main bass on this song and the six string bass ONLY on the bridge. Some people also argue that there is no 12 string electric, just two six string guitars playing in unison. It was hard to decipher, but I guessed that the main bass, 12 string and six string bass played the same line in different octaves
I'm playing my 1956 Gibson J-45 Acoustic instead of a J-200. My Les Paul is a 2005 Gibson Les Paul Standard. The 12 string guitar is a real 1966 Guild Starfire XII, just like John's except with humbucking pickups instead of single coils. My six string bass is a Squier Bass VI with LaBella flatwound strings
I'm plugging all my electrics into my 1965 Fender Blackface Bassman amp. The Beatles used Fender blackface deluxes, a showman, and a Blonde Bassman during the 1968 sessions. Eric likely plugged his Les Paul into one of these (I think the deluxe reverb) and cranked the amp. You can hear him turning up his volume knob before the outro solo to get more crunch
Eric's guitar also had a tape flanging/ADT effect added onto it after recording. This is an effect that was invented at EMI, where the engineer doubles the signal onto another tape reel, and then delays the second reel slightly. That small delay creates the wobbly sound. I'm replicating this with my Strymon Deco ADT/Tape pedal. I'm getting Eric's crunch by using JHS Morning Glory and Klon KTR overdrive pedals
At 3:02 the tape flanging on his Les Paul becomes a faster wobble. I replicated this in Pro Tools with my J-37 Abbey Road Tape plug-in

This is insane, I could be convinced that this is a perfect isolation of the guitars on the official track, the playing and the tone is PERFECT! I would absolutely love to hear you do Strawberry Fields Forever!
4:43 k
I never noticed that 12 string buried in the chorus on the original track. Amazing!
Awesome stuff! Up there with Mattiboo and Ably House’s excellent covers. I thought you did a good job in our cover, but you outdid yourself here! Popkin is God!
I say he’s better than mattiboo cuz he actually uploads videos😅. But great job again Sam!
@@darthplagueisthewise6832 and mattiboo is constantly absent
Michael Sokil makes splendid covers too.
Sam you couldn't of picked a better band to show just how good they were. The Beatles would have made you the fifth BEATLE. Great stuff Sam. I could listen to you all day playing the world's best band ever. 👍🎸
Having listened to all Beatlrs and solo albums I am convinced John and George were masters of rhythm guitar as this awesome cover proves
They weren’t called the greatest band ever for no reason
The guitar on the chorus must be one of the most beautiful things I've heard in my life... Splendid job, Sam!
Thank you!
Absolutely nailed the bridge section with the Guild and Bass VI! Fantastic cover as always, Sam!!
❤️❤️❤️
As usual, amazing stuff : tone is the most accurate I've ever seen in a cover!
Wow thanks! Love your channel
Awesome to finally see this with the Guild Starfire XII, and amazing tone on the Les Paul!
Sam, you have outdone yourself with this one! This is the best guitar cover of this song I’ve ever seen on RUclips.
Aw thanks Dom. I’m waiting for your cover though!
Agreed
what do u think of Ryohei's cover
Ever since you teased us with your community post about getting a Guild Starfire, I've never been more excited for a cover in my life (heh). You never fail to amaze me with how good your covers are, and this one is no exception! Splendid job as usual!
Another amazing cover. The Strymon Deco is such a beatiful and underated pedal too!
I think it's the best cover of this song on RUclips! Very well done, Sam!
Turns out I’m right it is a banger, the les Paul tone is the most accurate I’ve heard good job man
Wonderful! Your lead guitar tone is breathtaking. A great tribute to Clapton in '68. I also like the reproduction of John's 12-string guitar.
George Harrison's songwriting is so impressive because he adds details I would never notice, such as the two basses. There was a muted bass, but I didn't know there was Bass VI.
I also love this song, because of the Hammond Organ in the chorus, it's so beautiful.
If I could only listen to one guitar solo for the rest of my life, it would be Eric's on this song. Perfect job on this one (again), keep it up!
Most fantastic and brilliant!
absolutely amazing job! 👏🏿
Christ on a bun Sam, you did it again. Sounds just like the original!
Fantastic! Absolutely wonderful! Been looking forward to this cover ever since you first mentioned it and it was worth the wait!
I always love the sound of acoustic guitars in your videos, sounds so perfect
Wow you nailed it! Just incredible!
This is bloody awesome!!! You nailed it once again Sam!
Nailed the dynamics just perfectly! Thanks for the hard work.
Perfectly played and presented.
Awesome job, Sam. You did great. Keep it going!
Amazing! As always 👏👏👏
Oh my sweet lord this cover is simply fantastic!! Congrats
Wow you did absolutely an amazing job on this one!👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Fantastic job. Playing, tone and everything. Thanks for posting these videos and making people happy.
It’s fun seeing you tease us with community posts and then seeing this beauty
Wow this was most impressive. Love the way you show all the guitars up close. Thanks for posting.😎
Just wow, you nailed it!
My favourite Beatles song and you absolutely NAILED IT!!!
Amazing cover, congratulations!
Excellent-- really enjoyed this!
Absolutely knocked this one out of the f*cking park! Outstanding cover dude, completely nailed Clapton's guitar tone.
Another excellent job Sam! Nice Eric work! That Guild 12 sounds awesome too!
Super excelente sonido de tu les paul..... Grandioso grandioso cover saludos sam
The guitar solo sounded almost like the original...unbelievable!
The tone and the nuances were uncannily like the record.
Simply amazing!
i remember almost a year ago, i requested this, and here it is, the wait didn't disappoint
Sorry I’m late 😂
@@sampopkin its about quality, not quantity
Great job what else can one say I closed my eyes and all that was missing was George singing and the boys harmonizing with it. I actually think most everything you do is pretty spot on. I wish I had your guitar collection it truly is amazing.
This is badass six ways to Sunday
That Guild seems like such a unicorn, can’t believe you got your hands on it
Sounds and looks great (especially in this lighting)
WOOO HOO!! I’ve been waiting eagerly for this cant wait to see how you’ve nailed it!
Edit: You nailed it Sam as always! Definitely one that was worth the wait
Wonderful 🤩
Shows the absolute genius of the Beatles and George Harrison.
¡Gracias Sam!
Por recordar al gran Harrison.¡ Fantástico!
Отличный кавер и самое точное соло! Обычно все лажают в каких-то моментах
Wow!! This is insane!! ❤
Its crazy you have all of the instrument for this. Just beautiful man
This is really the best beatle's song, thank you forever George
Amazing song
You win sir, that Clapton guitar sounds perfect.
Great cover teacher
You’re the teacher!
Thanks a lot Sam, now I have to get that Guild 12-string and I'm broke from buying too many Beatle guitars! But I do have that LP except as an '85 Studio with dot inlay. Removed the pickguard and replaced the speed knobs, otherwise same sunburst with same binding, you've got a much nicer flame. As always you've unleashed another sweet recording, thank you.
That les paul is no slouch. The guild is really great but had a ton of issues when I first got it. I’d be careful with the vintage ones unless you play one in person. They do make a new $500 version too
Good job...that was awesome. Been playing this one lately myself. Very appropriate really.
wonderful
Sam, you handled that classic Clapton solo masterfully...especially those extreme bends. Kudos.
Great stuff as always, here's one to George!
That was awesome Sam.
amazing playing!! sounds like the real thing
Loved it!
That Les Paul sounds amazing.
It's really great.
I loved this video so much it inspired me to finally go out and buy an electric 12 string- something I’ve wanted to do for many years. Thanks for sharing this with us.
🤘
Very enjoyable. Good job.
I have goosebumps!
Ooh those bends! Nicely done. Your attention to detail on the tone of all the guitars is great.
Fantastic
Another winner 🏆
killer tone on the Les...... Sam "Clapton" well done sir.!
Sooooo niceeeeee!
Estas en otro nivel
Happy birthday George Harrison. Wish you could have have made the long haul with us. You are missed!
So right! He left us way too soon. 😔
Excellent.
God, you’re literally the best at this.
Sounds perfect.
So glad to see the Bass VI.
I just bought one yesterday and it should ship sometime after the 28th.
I’d love to see more of it 😍
That tone!!!!!
While my guitar gently weeps classic song from the sixties fifty years old still sounds good now good song from the Beatles
OMG
Sam you nailed that double tracked les paul Paul tone on this. I’ve been chasing that for a while. ADT I believe is what it was called.
Thanks! Yeah the Strymon Deco is the closest way to get that tone
Cant love it more❤❤❤
All those guitars gently wept in yer vid
I've always been a big fan of the mix of this song on The Beatles Rockband because you get to hear more of the ending solo. I played the game so much when I was younger that I've become more accustomed to that version over the album version XD
Fantastic job! My biggest gripe with the 50th Anniversary White Album was the lack of the backwards guitar solo version of this song. Actually my main gripe was the alternate takes in general sound almost identical to the finished product.
I'm kinda surprised that u covered this one, Great job on this one bro
Actually shocked you’re just now doing this! Never fail to amaze the shit out of me (pardon my French) I love how it’s possibly the most iconic Beatles solo of all time and it wasn’t even played by a Beatle :)
❤️
Flawless Sam!
Isso, GREAT !
nice job
your catalogue is incredibly impressive
Thanks!
This was the song that convinced me to pick up the guitar. Clapton's solo on this track completely changed my perception about how guitars could sound and made me a blues fanatic. Very happy to see it be done such justice. :_)
Thanks! Yeah Clapton killed it. Amazing that he came up with that solo on the spot, the outtakes have very different solos on them
@@sampopkin I've actually never given the outtakes of WMGGW a listen. Only ever the WA version and the acoustic version.
@@fenderfan05 I think it’s take 27 outtake on the WA box set with Clapton in it. Amazing to hear
With your every video, i'm turning a happily mood each time. And a "wah-wah" cover, would be very very nice.
And THE winner is ... Sam Popkin !!!! Amazing job !!! Greetings from México !!!!
Oh yea!
brillant
I want that fender 6 so bad!
Muito bom.
Out friggin' Standing.
If Clapton ever wants to remember how he did it, he'll watch this.
Thank you. Someone’s gotta do it righteous.
