I fixed a problem with my 2001 MTD Yard Machine That some of your viewers might have had. I did a lot of repairs and when I was done with putting new belts on my mower would only move in high-speed. It took a lot of fixing and searching, but I found that the tensioner pulley Spring for the transmission belt was worn out. I doubled the Spring. Put more tension on the variable speed pulley and put it back together. And then I had low speed and up to high speeds. It worked great. I hope this helps someone because it took me a lot of searching the internet and no one mentioned this problem of weak spring.
Thanks so much, this has been a life saver. Question, at 10:41, you say you got the belt underneath the brackets. How? I can remove the bolt and the gap is so small. Thanks from downnder
Great video thanks. One question, I dropped my small extension spring and can’t figure out what it attached to. Anyway you can show me a vid or picture.
@@farpointmowersandmore ok got spring off. Question #2. Put screwdriver in hole on pulley. Put on 7/8 wrench, turned a little bit, screwppears loosened up just like you said. But now screw just turns and turns and turns but never comes off. Appears that the whole shaft is turning.
i don't see anything i did differently, but now with the shifter in Neutral and variable drive in Park the lawnmower still moves forward or reverse depending on the last direction selected. While moving, the brake does not stop it. If i am in drive in put it in neutral and double pump the clutch/brake then it might go into park, but i have to double pump it. Tried replacing new cheap ebay belts with expensive MTD OEM belts and it didn't help. Any suggestions? I replaced the belts 7 years ago and didn't have any issues. This time it's kicked my butt.
@@farpointmowersandmorethanks for the reply, I did track it down to the brake/ clutch rod adjustment. Three rotations of it and it's working perfectly now.
My upper drive belt keeps popping off causing my accelerator pedal to not work I’m assuming it’s stretched how do you find the exact belt replacement? Do you search what the sidewall of your belt says with the numbers thanks!
If it's still visible the side of the belt should have the numbers. If not, look on the body of the mower under the seat, or on the underside of the hood. Most of the time it will have the actual model number or even the part numbers. Then, use eBay and Amazon to find a cheap replacement. Good luck!
@farpointmowersandmore thanks sir, fixed the belt. It's running good. But I noticed that sometimes when i turn it off and go to start it I turn the key over I get nothing. No sound. No turnover. Nothing. I move the gears around and hop off for about 5 mins. Then it starts up. Any idea on what this might be?
@curtis8647 seat seitch doesn't affect cranking. Try pressing brak a bit further. Also pull back on blade engagement lever. I had blade lever that would rest just enough that safety switch opened.

Great tip!! Thanks loads!! 👍
Thanks for the video. I could actually see what you were doing, and the camera wasn’t moving all around. Appreciate it!
I try my best to make sure everything is clear for the viewer!
@@farpointmowersandmore Appreciate you lots!
Best video I’ve found yet. Thanks for keeping it simple and to the point.
Thanks!! I try to always stay on point. No need to draw out a video with random stuff.
Thanks heaps. Best vid so far. Hopefully I can do it.
You got this! Let me know if you have any questions.
Perfect timing! Mutt 2 needs a new belt , I'll show this video to my friend.

I had to pry it up over the lip and then rotated the pulley to walk it on to it.
@farpointmowersandmore nailed it. Thanks so much

It might be part of the deck lift assembly, but if you can't find it on this video, I'll try and take a picture.
My exact set up! Terrific video.
Glad I could help!
How in the world did you get that spring off with one quick tie. I got thru four so far and that spring has not budged.
magic-- OK, not really, it is the 30+ years as a mechanic

What are the belt part numbers?
Sorry, I don't have those. Look on the inside of your hood they should be listed there.

Hmm. That is strange. I feel like you have the larger belt on the pullies the wrong way, but without photos it's hard to say.

@@farpointmowersandmoreget 35 1/4 belt
All the necessary part numbers are on a sticker under the hood.
A crow's foot socket on an extension to ratchet works got on rear pulley nut and cross rod
Good call! I have a set that never gets used. I'll dig them out for the next one.
Whats the belt called that engages the blades?
Deck belt! The drive belts are for the transmission and the deck belt runs the mower deck. Good luck!

@@curtis8647 Sounds like the seat safety switch might be the issue. Maybe try sitting on it and getting up a few times to see if it will start.
Deck belt or ground belt

I use a burr grinder and remove enough metal for my 7/8 socket to use impack to remove nut
Each his own way
That is a good tip- Rust is so annoying!!
Looks like lower belt was on wrong side of bolt near engine pull on right side
It's still working, so I guess it was OK.
SO HOW DID YOU GET THE NEW DRIVE BELT BACK ON THE REAR PULLEY?
Did you watch the video?
