Can u tell me that part # for that guide bolt that you only loosened up. I snapped mine and need a new one. The guide bolt on the variable speed pulley bracket
Thank you Taryl. I have just replaced those belts and the steering shaft. Thanks to your other videos I learned that I could roll the tractor onto its side to get access to the stupid Philips head screw under the steering shaft. I cut it off with a grinder. I don't have the strength to lift the mower so I took a piece of 4x2" pine 7' long, screwed it to the running board with a roofing screw and used it as a lever to roll the machine. Worked perfectly. Now I just have to put the deck back on with the new deck belt and blades and I am done. BTW, I had to cut the shaft so I could drop it out of the upper bushing (not really a bushing it's just a hole in the plastic console) and then I had to hack up the console with an all-purpose tool to make a hole large enough to drop the new shaft in from the top. I used epoxy putty to reinforce the hacked up console. I dropped the deck as I figured it would give better access to the shaft screw and for blade replacement. OH. I don't have an air hammer so I used a regular hammer - took quite a while but the engine pulley eventually came off. I am now thinking that if I put a blunt rod in my old hammer drill it might do the same job. Anyone tried this idea?
I really appreciate your time and effort to get this video done for me to learn I just installed a new deck belt on now I need to put these upper and lower ones on my mower sat in the garage for 2 years I thank you for sharing with I am very grateful for your help and support and YES we need to laugh more in this time of need great work guys now I'm not afraid to tackle this ridden mower God bless
Happy Father's Day Taryl! You been doin this professionally longer n I been alive and I'm 36! That's why even though I been doin repairs for years, I still watch yer vids to pick up tips from an old hat like yerself! Thanks for all you do bud!
WOW, That was so easy to change, i thought I would have to bring to a lawn mower shop to have it done. It took me an hour to change it. I'm 11 years old and changed it by myself. So if an 11 year old can do it, anyone can do it. Keep up the good work man.
Thank you so much for your videos Taryl and family. I have shared with many folks. This one was the exact mower I am dealing with with and the same old mower issues. Thanks again.

+Taryl Fixes All...You know, it makes me very happy that I see a father and his two sons have a good time making a videos that teaches people how to work on outdoor power equipment. As far as I can tell here on RUclips, you are the only one that uses his own sons to do this. I really liked the video where you grabbed Ronny and dragged him backwards then took a dummy and threw it over a fence. You could tell the dummy was a dummy but that was what added the fun to it ^_^ Such little things as that really makes me want to watch your videos and I know after watching said videos, such as this one, I will know just a little more about outdoor power equipment repair. Thank you sir.
after changing all three belts, i started cutting tall grass (on an MTD Yard Machines 12.5 B&S 28T707) the blades would eventually stop, then rev back up again, then stop, then rev back up...this continued until I figured out that the throttle (plate that has the white thingy on it wasn't opening the throttle all the way, so I pushed it with my finger and eventually it started revving higher (the engine), once the engine kicked into this higher throttle setting, it cut like hell. My question is, is that normal? I need to buy a whole new throttle plate because the white plastic thingy is partially melted and causes issues with max throttle settings. What do you guys think.. I'm at a loss. By the way, it's a Model 13AH660F352 MTD Yard Machines - single piston L-head or whatever they're called.
@@dabneyoffermein595 Making comments and inquiries on a 7 year old video just won't do. no one but a lurker like me will see it, and it's just the wrong place to ask because you can't post photos and it's just not the best place. Didn't know the needle bearings could be replaced, not on the MTD parts diagram separately...just the entire pulley. Saved some money, that earn a like, share and subscription
Good video easy to follow and well explained. One thing having used this to do the job. I hope you have the air tools. I could not even get the rusty bolt on the front pulley to budge never mind pull the assembly down. I suspect given the vintage of these things that would be the case with most everybody. If you are just the handy homeowner with a decent set of hand tools you will be SOL. Unless you do it the wrong way! This guy will tell you himself that what follows is the wrong way, but if you find yourself in this position feel free to read on. The reason you have to pull that pulley down is to clear the belt by three retaining tabs. You can bend the tabs out of the way and get the belt out. If you go this route DO NOT pry on the pulleys to bend the tabs. Your pulley will bend before the tabs yield and you don't want that! You will have to use pliers and muscle. Once the tabs are out of the way you will need slack on the other end to work the belt out of the tight space. Luckily the center pulley assembly is easy to remove, just a snap ring and washer. Once the new belt is on you can bend the tabs back Mine aren't perfectly straight but that belt is never falling out.
Another way to get the belt off the motor pulley that's easier than bending the tabs is to loosen the engine mount bolts and slide the engine left or right, opening the gap between the pulley and the tabs.
Taryl, great job with the DIY assist - I changed my Drive belt in less than an hour and only had one small snafu that was easily fixed. Couldn't have done it without Taryl - real bro'!
I have three of these MTD mowers and I've got one that needs belts replaced on it sitting and I don't use it because of that thank you so much for this video
Thank you for video. I was having trouble with the rear belt but this video helped a bunch. and it calmed me down with you joking around with the teeth and sound fx. good job you made my day.
An alternative to the two bolts in the wheel well for the shifter is to go down through the bottom. There is one bolt that connects the shifter to the transaxle, and it's very easy to get to when the mower is jacked up. Remove that one bolt and the belt can come down and the new one can go in.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge Taryl - need to change the belts on my yard machines mower, which should be exactly the same except for the lever placement. Cheers from Montreal, Canada!

I owe you an apology. Last week I commented that the silly presentation might be a turn-off to somebody wanting knowledge and answers for their mower or equipment problems. After watching (and "Liking") several of your videos, I have learned A LOT about maintenance and repair of my MTD mower. Slightly entertaining yet HIGHLY informative and educational. Comedy is selective, yet information is universal. Thank You for schooling me on my mower. I'll try to learn to laugh at the other stuff. Well done!
Thanks for your video. I have a Huskee 2004 looks exactly the same with deck rod and looks exactly the same under the shift F-N-R. I guess its all MTD. All looks the same underneath. You guys really help us non-mower mechanics.
Must be nice to have a center cover, I had to do everything from below. Mine is a side shifter. I had to replace the variable speed pulley & belts & that spring was a bear!!!!!!!!!!!! Your video had the basics to help me, thanks bunches.
Hello Taryl, great video on the belts. I am working on an Agway 1990, MO 130-689G019. The belts are 754-0280 & 754-0370, I will check the pulley's before I order the parts. Thanks!!

Great video thanks for info on sizing and pulley maintenance . Brake sticking would not allow mower to roll??? My back belt stays on for several straps of mowing then falls off .I thought it was too long but matches your # gonna check other items
NIce costumes. These belts can tend to be a bit of challenge to get off but if I can do it anyone can do it. One question: do you have to change both belts at the same time even though only the drive belt is worn?
At 2:53 that got me. that was funnier than hell. I can seriously have a bad day. I watch one of these videos, and something will make me laugh my ass off.
Installed and then ruined a new belt. Started to replace and realized I needed to go behind the shifter lever. Couldn't see how to do it. Watched the video till 7:50 and then was able to finish installing the 2nd new belt...This one should last. Thanks very much for the help. Also enjoyed the rest of the video and will be prepared to replace the front next time...
To remove the belts, after taking a picture of the routing of the belts, just cut the old belts off. as you take off each belt note the number, you will still have to remove the bracket, loosen/remove the guides to put the new belts on. I used a big gear puller to remove the front pulley to a point where the gear puller could not reach. Then under the starter there is a hole. Used a gigantic screwdriver and a rubber mallet to bang the pully all the way off. Quite possible to completely remove the pulley through the hole under the starter. If I was going to do it that way I would remove the starter and cover. Do not forget to remove/disconnect the battery. I found out my deck prop shafts have frozen up. This was a free tractor and I believe it sat for a while under a tarp.
Hey Taryl! LOVE your videos. Absolute life savor! May God bless you for so generously taking the time to make these videos to help your fellow man. Hey, man, I got a question ... I'm trying to turn the 5/8" nut off the engine pulley and when I go to turn it the whole engine turns? How do I keep the engine still so I can crank on the nut? Thanks again!
Thanks Taylor. Need help on how to adjust the clutch. New belts installed. But, in gear sometimes it slows down and stops. If I put it in a higher gear. It will go but slows down and stops going up hills??
Taryl, at 16:40 is that belt being compressed? I have been fighting this section for 3 hours and the belt seems about 1/4 inch too wide to slip thru the gap. I took that guide pin completely out and it didnt help.
I liked the idea of using air chisel to loosen rusted on pulley wheel. These mowers have problems with getting rear wheels off the axles due to rust. Have you ever used the air chisel to loosen and remove the rear wheels and if not do you think it will work easier than a torch and puller and sledge hammers? Great video. Thanks
It can be a pain, just for future reference, when I get one, usually well used, I take the wheels off, clean the axle with a wire wheel, grease and replace. Sometimes, if you use a screw jack and put some not a lot of pressure against the wheel and transmission then hammer on the axle it helps be very careful you don't use too much pressure. I know it takes some time, but that's the easiest way I have found on really difficult wheels I realize this is a very old post, but maybe it will help someone.
Bloodly champions pair of you i have one of those here in Australia its not spose to be here,, backdoor import no listing on belt no but u have helped more than then the shop i bought it from cheers from down under
Question, I got the same mower, except it’s a 12hp I/c Briggs, and it’s a 38” cut, all sudden, I can shift the thing in gear forward/reverse but only thing that happens now is the belt smokes at the motor we’re it’s spinning and no movement?
I changed my drive belts last year (thanks to this video). However, the mower still slips when it is cold, or when I have a load on it (hauling a cart). Is there any way to adjust or tighten the tension on the drive belts?
I also did that having the wrong socket on the front pulley bolt which was not close tolerance enough, and rounded the corners off the seized bolt. I had to use an Irwin socket made for grabbing rounded bolt heads to finally get it off. I ordered another bolt from Sears Parts Direct which has lower prices on everything. I made sure that bolt got coated with anti seize compound before I put it back on.
I was wondering if anybody reading who has one of these "7 speed shift on the go" MTD models with this 2 belt CVT system can say: How well is it holding up ? Does it tolerate moderate towing ? How frequent are belt changes needed ? Can you compare to Hydrostatic or other CVT lawn tractor Transmission systems? Thanks a ton for any input. I'm deciding which tractor & drive system to buy now.
Hello. This video helped a lot in understanding how to fix my mower. QUESTION: The big bolt you used for the engine pulley, what size it is? Thank you!
Hi Taryl nice video! I sort of had an idea but your video cleared up some details. I can only say that MTD has some of the worst design going. Instead of having one lever for PTO engage and another for deck height, these knuckleheads made an all-in-one lever which is useless. The blades barely stop when you need them to and the blades barely spin when trying to use the damn thing. This has nothing to do with this video. For this video the hard part was getting the shift lever bracket back on which requires you to be in 2 places at one time. I decided to use a stick to get the front hole aligned then was able to get the back screw in. From there take the stick out and align the front part of the bracket with the hole and get the screw in. Maybe 1st graders design for MTD but that would be insulting to first graders and my apologies to them in advance ( the first graders ).
Does anyone know what the connector under the shift panel is for disconnected by Taryl At around 3:40? After I replaced the drive belt, when the deck is lowered everything shuts down. I disconnect the wire and it will run. Looked for wire diagrams but came up short.
I need some advice please. I have a 93 version of this mower model 4146395. The front axle is different than I've seen from most craftsman style with the hole in the center of the axle. Anyway I want to mount a plow I purchased, but nothing looks rigid up front
Tayrl what is the part # on the pulley you replaced in this video I have a MTD 600 series ranch king model number is long gone but it is a variable drive much like the one in this video. I would like to thank you for your videos they are extremely helpful
(Taryl Fix All) I, Ralph have a question the riding mower you are putting belts on I have a mower like this but a little older model. I replaced my drive belts on it, there was a piece where the Drive shifter connects to the inside wall left side on a bracket along with a wire/medal clip it came off. How does it go back on?

+2028 END - Use a Screw Driver to hold onto the Fly Wheel. Find a secure place so it doesn't' move. From there you can get the nut off easily.
Thanks Taylor. Need help on how to adjust the clutch. New belts installed. But, in gear sometimes it slows down and stops. If I put it in a higher gear. It will go but slows down and stops going up hills??
@ 12:48 what will happen if you put the spacer on upside down?
Taryl, at 16:40 is that belt being compressed? I have been fighting this section for 3 hours and the belt seems about 1/4 inch too wide to slip thru the gap. I took that guide pin completely out and it didnt help.
I liked the idea of using air chisel to loosen rusted on pulley wheel. These mowers have problems with getting rear wheels off the axles due to rust. Have you ever used the air chisel to loosen and remove the rear wheels and if not do you think it will work easier than a torch and puller and sledge hammers? Great video. Thanks
Yeah, I have an old MTD bought by my grand father - tried everything to get the rear wheels off - never did.
I know it takes some time, but that's the easiest way I have found on really difficult wheels
I realize this is a very old post, but maybe it will help someone.
I seriously like your picture of you Tayrl at 10.5 years old in 1971 on your Kawasaki Coyote mini 🚲 bike...HAHA!!.
Hold on Jr….it’s Father’s Day, let me take first pick! 😂excellent video. Helped out alot

You're welcome! Thanks for watchin'
Happy Father's Day! Thanks for the vid!
Thank you, I would have made that harder if I did it on my own. You saved me time
Happy Father's Day Taryl!
Question, I got the same mower, except it’s a 12hp I/c Briggs, and it’s a 38” cut, all sudden, I can shift the thing in gear forward/reverse but only thing that happens now is the belt smokes at the motor we’re it’s spinning and no movement?
thank you that was very informative and the the step by step tips were very helpful
This video his hilarious, entertaining and most important, instructional. Great job!
I changed my drive belts last year (thanks to this video). However, the mower still slips when it is cold, or when I have a load on it (hauling a cart). Is there any way to adjust or tighten the tension on the drive belts?
Spray your pullies with hairspray.and check the brake make sure its not sticking.
Sure glad I found your channel .
What kind of chisel/punch/bit are you using in your air hammer? CAN NOT get that pulley off mine (looks like the near exact same model).
Happy Father's Day Taryl... Another great howto vid... keep it up!!!
I was wondering if anybody reading who has one of these "7 speed shift on the go" MTD models with this 2 belt CVT system can say:
How well is it holding up ?
Does it tolerate moderate towing ?
How frequent are belt changes needed ?
Can you compare to Hydrostatic or other CVT lawn tractor Transmission systems?
Thanks a ton for any input.
I'm deciding which tractor & drive system to buy now.
I also love these videos; educational, and entertaining. 😁
Hello. This video helped a lot in understanding how to fix my mower.
QUESTION: The big bolt you used for the engine pulley, what size it is?
Thank you!
Think it’s 7/8
Does anyone know what the connector under the shift panel is for disconnected by Taryl
At around 3:40?
After I replaced the drive belt, when the deck is lowered everything shuts down.
I disconnect the wire and it will run. Looked for wire diagrams but came up short.
I need some advice please. I have a 93 version of this mower model 4146395. The front axle is different than I've seen from most craftsman style with the hole in the center of the axle. Anyway I want to mount a plow I purchased, but nothing looks rigid up front
You have saved me a ship load of time and energy. Great videos.
Hahahahaha you said "you dont have to jerk your deck off". Videos are AWESOME
Great Job! Thanks for the help.
