Thank you! I have Yard-Man 900 Autodrive Series and when pushing the pedal, there was a repetitious clunking sound. Didn’t matter if I was in F or R. This video saved me from just running it until something broke or trying to get this thing to an MTD service center (60 miles away). My drive belt ended up having missing chunks which was making the sound. A few steps were different (I had to remove the tensioner pulley which was 1 bolt - easy - and the spring on the tensioner is on the opposite side of the mower) but the overall process was the same. Thanks again for the great step-by-step!
I already planned on changing both. I've had the mower for 3 years now after purchasing it used for $325. The top belt still looks new but I will go ahead and change it out with the new one. I'll keep the one I take off for a backup after I closely inspect it after removal. I understand the need for repairman but my thinking is this, If it can be done , then there is no reason I myself cannot take the time to do myself. At the end of the day it is a very rewarding feeling to know that I accomplished something that most women nowadays wouldn't even dream about trying to do for themselves. Sad but true. Only down fall is it tends to intimidate men in the dating world. Probably why I've been single and without dates for 8 yrs. Oh well I am who I am. Thank you again and I will subscribe. Have a wonderful day.
I just replaced the lower drive belt on my MTD lawn tractor and I found your video quite helpful even though there are some pretty significant differences between your model and mine. Thank you!
Many thanks for actually demonstrating the trick to removing the spring by pulling on it with string trimmer line and turning it parallel to the slot. It's easy when you know the answer. I had no idea why that slot was there, what the other videos were talking about, and screwed around by moving the pulley with a pry stick instead.
Thank you for this! You just saved me at least $75 in labor at the repair shop! Very thorough and easy to understand instructions, too. I have a newer Huskee Supreme, but it's the same basic design as this one, and I'm sure most variable speed MTD mowers are pretty much the same design.
That’s great! I have a video for each of the three belts plus other repairs on this mower so be sure to subscribe. They are some of my first ever videos so the audio quality is lacking but I think you can follow along.
I want to Thank You for your video. As a single middle aged woman that refuses to take something to a repairman (due to being over charged), your video is the only one I have been able to find that walks a person thru the entire process. Wish me luck and hopefully no bloody knuckles. LOL
Dena Thompson Thank you so much for the kind comment. I train school teachers in my day job so I try to apply the step by step process to my videos. I suggest you change the upper and lower drive belt at the same time. You can do this! Let me know if you have any questions. Be sure to subscribe. I have several videos for this mower.
Very good video; concise and to the point, and spoken well. Thanks very much for your help. I had studied the assemblies and had figured out what appeared to be the process, but your video confirmed everything, so I didn't go down the wrong rabbit trail.
I replaced all three while I was at it. Finished and already "road tested." Very successful repair. Thanks again. BTW, I'm a tight wad do it yourselfer too. I find that I'm so particular I usually do it myself with better results. That way, I can't blame anyone but me if it doesn't work. Lol. Thanks again.
I Was having trouble with my drive belt I really got good guidance on your video I was lucky the belt slipped off bu one of the guides it took a little to get back on but it works fine now. Thanks a lot.
Hi there, many thanks for your excellent instructional video which inspired me to have a go at my Lawnflite 904 1996 ride on which was losing power.Changing the belt has restored it to full power and I have saved a fortune. Some differences in upper and lower belts but were readily overcome.
I am so happy you gained the confidence to replace them yourself. The same concepts apply to most mowers even though things may be in a slightly different location.
Great Job Of Instruction. I have an MTD, also A John Deere. Took the Deere to Dealer for upper drive belt. They wanted right $600.00 to replace ALL PULLYS AND INSTALL THE BELT, WHICH I HAD ALREADY BOUGHT THERE. YOU GAVE ME THE CONFIDENCE TO DO IT MYSELF. Polished the PULLYS with electric wire wheel. 20 Year Old JD Saber is FINE now. Thanks.
Excellent video I was at a loss as to how I could get it done and had no way to get it to a shop. I have ordered the belts and as soon as they get here will try and do the job. Thank You very much!
Would have been ideal to show exactly how you secured the drive shaft with the pipe wrench, the trickiest part, but, it did confirm the method I feared would be necessary.
I just changed a lower drive belt (one that pulls tractor) on about a 2005 MTD automatic (foot pedal drive). I took deck off and raised rear up with a chain hoist. I had previously welded angle iron to a ball hitch and bolted it to the rear. So I put my chain through this rig. You can jack up your tractor if you have no hoist. Then I released the tensioner spring to the top pulley belt and removed the belt from the viable speed pulley. I used a pipe wrench to hold the crankshaft pulley and took off the nut and lowered the pulley off. Then there are three about 10 millimeter head bolts that hold the variable speed pulley to the side of the tractor frame. You loosen them up enough so the belt can clear between the pulley groove and the side of frame. Then just replace the lower drive belt by threading the belt to the crankshaft pulley and install the pulley. Then wrap the belt around the variable speed pulley and retighten the three frame bolts to pulley bracket. Thread belt around the two front tensioners. Run the upper transmission belt around the top groove of variable speed pulley and around the spring tensioner pulley and reconnect tensioner spring. Done. I had previously added a pulley underneath by drilling a hole and attaching a tensioner with bolt so that the drive belt back side rode on this tensioner pulley which took up a lot of extra space. I got it really close to tolerance as for a while the tractor took off a bit when in gear without pedal pressure. Eventually it stretched enough so it didn't engage. I used this over stretched belt for a couple of years on a lot of grass before it finally wore so much it kept coming off. So I ordered a Kevlar replacement for $20 on the net. Of course I will not need the extra pulley until this one stretches to the point that it will not pull the tractor proper.
I guess I may have not had to remove the bearing nut on the variable pulley as you can lift the middle section to top of the pulley up for clearance. Not sure if this gives enough clearance, but it may save someone some time to try that first.
Just watched both your belt replacement videos and the l.e.d problem on the garage door. Excellent video work and excellent step by step instruction. I'm subbing to your channel. Thanks !!!
You should always consider changing the upper and lower drive belts at the same time. This will save you in the long run and since they work together, they typically wear out at the same time. Follow the link below to view the video for changing the Upper Drive Belt. ruclips.net/video/G20J6LrHgM8/видео.html
Thanks for the great video. This also appears to be a Craftsman LT1500. It answered several questions. I am waiting for a new belt to complete the repair. With your video I should be able to get it all back together.
The sears part number for the LT1500 is 160855. Sears wants a little over $20.00 for it. It is supposed to be Kevlar reinforced for the applicaton. I found a 1/2" x 95" for from 9.95 to 19.95 on Amazon. Hope this helps.
Great vid, as I needed to change mine. Methods worked very well. FYI to all, there is a spline that is keyed on the front pulley should you drop it down too much and they don't line up anymore to push it back up. I was wondering why it wouldn't go back up until I realized that.
Try as I might I could not get the motor pulley bolt to come loose. After a quick evaluation I realized that I could pull the 4 motor screws and slide the engine toward the back. That not only gave me the slack I needed to get it around the front pulley guides I was able to twist the belt and use the thinner side profile to get it in between the back pulley and guide. After getting it around the pulleys I just slid the motor back into place, reinstalled the 4 engine bolts and put the deck belt back on.
sabercatpuck Nice job on problem solving. Ideally, you would use an impact drill to loosen the motor pulley bolt. They are becoming more and more popular as they now come in combos with a regular drill. Try asking your neighbors and I bet someone close by has one you can borrow. Glad you figured out a different way though.
TightWadRepairs yeah, I have an impact and had I not thought about the way I went with it I would have set up for that, but would have needed an extension cord for power.
Great video. Instructions sync'd perfectly with my '18 Murray M-115 38" and saved me a lot of time. My Murray has an MTD Model number so everything was exactly the same as in your video. Needed a breaker bar to loosen the spindle in the front but otherwise it went just as described. Nice job.
Excellent video. I have a Craftsman (MTD) 1500, and when the time comes I'll use this video to change the belts. The mower has run well except for the deck mounts which have broken twice. It has kept my welding skills up to date, but this is my last MTD The spindles gave out after 4 seasons of mowing, and it seems the durability of the MTD's is just not there.
Thanks for the video. I bought my YM just a few weeks ago used and had only cut 3 times with it. My belt got twisted and jammed and I had to push it to the garage. Saved me time and money and aggravation. Helps if you actually do it the way you say to as well. Btw, I used a zip tie for the spring. Worked great.
If the belt continues to slip and twist I would take it back where I purchased it and asked them to check the deck. You may have gotten a dud. Great tip on the zip tie.
This video works for MTD model 770 as well, but you have to take the bolts out that hold the rear axle to the frame so get clearance to put the belt over the rear pulley. Thanks for posting this!
Thanks 4 the video! I was going to change the upper drive belt and was trying to reverse the tensioner like u would on a vehicle , using ratchet/breaker bar but couldn't get the belt over the front pulley...
+Nicholas Watson Happy I could help. Saving your money is the main objective of the TightWadRepairs channel. Please let me know if you have any other issues with your mower I can assist with. I am always looking for more video ideas around the house.
I have a White brand mower made by MTD that looks exactly like the one in the video.I have similar problems plus one not in the description. It stalls or jumps when going uphill but the transmission doesn't hold the speed coming down an incline,it bucks in and out trying to hold whatever gear its in.Sound like drive belts? What symptoms would a bad variable speed pulley cause? Thanks for any advice.
I have just bought a used Yard Machine Model 13A1762F that is red in color other wise it look just like this one. The 6 speed control does not change speed at all. I look under the control lever and I do not see any mechanical mechanism for it to change the speed. Can you do a "How It Works" video for how the speed control works for this one please.
Unforgivably, I no longer have this mower. I got a deal I couldn’t pass up on a zero turn so I sold this one a few years ago. I assume the throttle control is connected to directly to the carburetor via a cable. Make sure the cable is tight so it opens the carb more as you move it higher.
@@TightWadDIY Thanks for your reply. May be I'll make a video of what I got and let you look at it and see if anything you can help me with. I'll come back when I have a video ready.👍
@@TightWadDIY So I get to make a video of my mower. I am thinking it is missing some parts, but it could me. If you don't mind and have time to take a look at this video and tell me what's wrong with it. Thanks. ruclips.net/video/EbhO9P0rolg/видео.html
Excellent video and page friend! I am going to tackle this as soon as my parts come in. Do I still have to lock the motor pulley if i use an impact wrench? If so, what is your suggested method?
Your video was very helpful. The only thing I wish you had show is how to loosed the bolt on pull shaft in order to drop down in order to get drive belt off front of mower.
Linda Loftus Sorry about that. I didn’t have a tripod when I filmed my first videos and I needed both hands for that step. If you have an impact wrench, you can use it to loosen the bolt without having to hold it. Otherwise, you will need one wrench to hold the shaft and another to loosen the bolt.
One more question then I won't bother you any more. First I would like to say I'm 72 year old female and have to do repairs myself as ss doesn't pay enough to have a lot done by professional. However I have more strength than most females half my age and able to do more also from those I know. Don't have an impact therefore would have to use pipe wrench and ratchet as you suggest, how hard would it be to loosen?
Linda Loftus I am fairly strong and was about 35 when I filmed this repair. I remember it taking all of my strength. I wish you lived near me because I am more than willing to help. That being said, many men and women are willing to help out but just need to he notified when there is a need. Are you part of any local group such as a church or a neighborhood group where you could ask to borrow an impact drill or someone strong to help with that part?
Even if you don’t regularly attend a church, I guarantee if you stopped by and asked for someone to stop by your home to help, they will take care of you.
@@TightWadDIY Only have one neighbor who might be able to help and he works nights. Little hard for him to find space time in which to help for any length of time as his wife has COPD and in bad shape. Pretty much has his hands full. As far as groups, no, I haven't lived in Wills Point Texas that long to get to know many people. Can''t take to repair shop either even if I had money for it as don't have any way to get it there and don't have money to purchase another mower. LOL. Makes for a delima.
Just bought a 2006 MTD automatic for $50. with no deck. The reed breather was bad blowing oil. Replaced it. Now runs great. Plan to take the deck off my 7 speed shift on the go MTD so I have an automatic. Those shift on the goes are hard on the transmission shift gears. When shifting down to lower speeds you have to use the clutch, causing wear and eventually gears jumping out of engagement. Easy fix. but cost a little for parts and have to take trans. apart. This auto has a great smooth shifting trans. The long drive belt on this auto don't look bad but it takes a hell of a lot of pressure to get the pedal pressed enough to run the mower at sufficient speed. I had the same trouble with a 2005 Troy built and added an extra tensioner by drilling a hole in line with the other tensioners to take up slack so it would run a little faster. Worked okay for a while but got where it didn't do that great. Do you know if the hardness in the pedal is due to a loose belt so I have to push beyond the point needed to tighten belt for running faster or is there some other reason for this hard pedal. I know that I had replaced the belt on the Troybuilt and it didn't last long before it got hard to press the pedal enough to run proper. That is when I added the extra tensioner. I know sometimes the bearings go bad on the tensioners and in particular one of the two bearings in the variable speed pulley which will wear belts out. I go to a bearing store and buy bearings for it as well as bearings for the spindles before they wear out. The shift on the go was jumping out of gear and there was practically no adjustment on the shift rod. I took the rod off and cut it into and welded it back with threads and nut so I could adjust it out. Doing pretty good like that. I see that some of these do have thread adjustments on the shift rod.
Zed Cartwright I can tell you my pedal was really messing up when my drive belts went bad. It would pull back too far and I would have to push it hard to get it back into the correct position. New belts fixed the issue.
Thanks Tightwad. I figured that was the problem. They have plenty room at the pedal slot to push down more, but designed not to. I hate to throw this belt away, because it is good and thick with no tears. So I am going to do like I did on the Troy built that I previously owned. The two idler pulleys that tension the belt when pedal is depressed don't have that much travel before the belt is too stretched . I am going to take an extra idler pulley that I have and run it in line with these two pulleys. There is a good portion of metal behind these two for mounting. Going to take the extra pulley and tension it to the drive belt so it is snug but not enough to engage the variable speed pulley. Then drill a hole in that relative position and bolt the pulley to the underneath frame. So I can use up that good belt before spending money on another one. When it needs replacing I will remove the extra pulley and be able to put it back on when the new belt stretches. Did this before and got another year or so out of the belt. I had an old craftsman that was designed to wear out deck belts. I put an extra pulley on the deck and got lots more wear on belts.
5:35 interesting as my mower looks like yours but my transmission pulley nut is a bit ahead of the lift rod whereas yours is a bit rear of it. My parts manual shows a different belt number. You belt is a bit longer than mine. My model 13a3761g500
I couldn't get belt past left guide on vari pulley. I loosened 3 bolts with 3/8 head on bottom. Removed 2 of them and shifted pulley enough to get belt on.
Great video up until the end. Maybe you could show or at least tell people like me, how the variable speed pulley actually just lifts up to accommodate the belt to slip past the belt guides.
My idler bracket on my MTD 46-inch gold doesn't hold the pulley high enough and the belt keeps coming off I've added washers to raise it up. Didn't work. Thought about trying a longer bolt through the pulley so it would raise it. The trouble is it would rub on the deck when I take it in and out of blade mowing. It is not bent. Any ideas? Thanks
Great video, I replaced both the upper and lower belt on my Toro LX500. I still have some slippage going up hills, is there a tension adjustment somewhere?
Just replaced this exact belt on my lawnmower. The belt jumped the double pulley and wound up in the same pulley as the upper drive belt. This happening is the reason i had to replace the belt to begin with. Any reason this could be happening? The tension spring seems to be working just fine.
I’m doing something wrong getting the lower drive belt front pulley loosened. I have an impact wrench on it and it won’t budge. I’m afraid it will break if I keep using the impact on it. Please tell me it’s not threaded in reverse.
Thank you so much, this video helped me so much an it was one of the best one so far, great job explaining an showing how its done that wasn't so complicated.
There is no tensioner for the lower drive belt. It just goes on the main pulley in the front and the variable speed pulley in the back. The tensioner is on the upper drive belt.
TightWadRepairs I replaced mine belt but it will not go in drive nor reverse. There is not tension not sure what's going on I compare it to both old belt and new belt they seem to be the same size
How do you get the bolt loose on the bottom of the front pulley? Every time I try holding the bolt up top at the flywheel, that ends up being the one that loosens instead of the lower one.
Do you have a video on how to replace the variable speed pulley? i replaced the main drive belt (lower) and now it seems to only go in 7th gear wide open. We ordered a replacement pulley just need clues on how to replace it without killing ourselves, lol.
+TightWadRepairs, ok no worries. Did you ever need to replace it? From every other video I have found it appears to just have a retaining clip on top and it rides on a roller type bearing...any info you have would be appreciated. I am going to go chat up my local shop and see if I can pick their brains as well. Thanks for the response.
+CitizenKane380 Sorry, It didn't alert me to your message. The center part of the varispeed pulley(rear pulley on the lower drive belt) should slide up and down. If you slide the center section to the top of the pulley then you should be able to slip the belt out of the groove.
+Jamie Alcorn I would recommend a full hockey goalie outfit when working on your mower! But seriously, I do wear gloves when working in tight spots to keep my knuckles blood free. I do not usually wear gloves when filming because they just get in the way. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Let me know if there is anything else related to the mower you want me to record.
+TightWadRepairs What can you do for a seized variable speed pulley? Can it be unseized somehow? In other words the pulley that has both belts around it won't turn at all? Why did it do that?
There are bearings under the pulley. You can remove it and replace the bearings which should allow it to spin again. Another option would be to try some 3in1 oil and see if it will loosen the pulley up. This would only be a temporary fix though.
+TightWadRepairs Hey, thanks for your reply. Ok, so you're thinking I might be able to replace the ball bearings in the pulley. I was starting to think I might have to buy the entire variable speed pulley assembly? I'm not sure I'd know where to get JUST the ball bearings? I'll try some oil first. : )) thanks!
Christopher Sidoti I made this video before I owned an impact drill. It is possible to remove it with a ratchet/socket but it’s on pretty tight. You could add a cheater pipe to give yourself more leverage. A torque wrench is actually the term for a wrench that tightens bolts to a specific torque and isn’t usually used to remove bolts.
Ended up buying a 1/4 in. Impact driver which might have loosened it a bit but the final blow was done by hand 🖐. Felt good to finally get that pulley shaft down. Took 4 days all together. First time doing a job like this lol.
I’m doing something wrong on the lower drive belt. The front pulley bolt will NOT budge. Have an impact wrench and am afraid I’m going to break it if I keep at it. Please tell me it’s not threaded in reverse.
@@TightWadDIY ok.. so.... if ive gone the wrong way.. which i think i have.. how the heck can i get it to loosen? Any tips.. i have just tried.. and it wont loosen

@@TightWadDIY the bolt to drop down .. im not good on technical terms.. but the one i need to loosen to drop it down so i can get bottom drive belt off
Ok, so hopefully you can help me here. I've done everything to the T. After putting everything back, the tension pully is not tense at all. If I pull it far enough it causes the belt to rub the blade engaging shaft. It's like something has shifted and for the life of me, I can't figure it out.
i have a 1974 international 1450 cubcadet im trying to find a mule drive belt for it so i can get it going can you tell size and length for it so i can get one for it asap
Shirley Bollhorst CubCadet customer support is very helpful. I would suggest giving them a call. They can likely tell you the size and recommend a retailer.
Alan Wuertenberg The center part of the variable speed pulley has to pull up higher to slip it out. Is it moving freely? If not, you may want to oil it.
@@TightWadDIY Sorry, I wasn't clear. No problem getting the old belt out. And the pull goes up just fine. I can't get the new belt to go in on the left side. Although the pulley does pull up ok, I will oil it to see if i can get it up any higher. Thanks for the quick reply. It is very hot here and is limiting the time I can put on this. Darn grass still grows!
Alan Wuertenberg If the old one came off, you will be able to get the new one on. I know it’s frustrating to work in the heat but you can do it! You may need to find a blunt edge tool to push the belt past the pulley.
Sidney Carter sr I no longer have this mower. You should be able to see how the springs are connected here though. Are you trying to find the correct place for them or are you having trouble stretching the spring to reconnect them?
This would have been easier if I had ratcheting wrenches to remove the fender. Having to work through the battery opening and from the under neath made it more difficult.n Thanks for your encouragement.
I appreciate the videos will subscribe I have a Yardman looks just like this on has 13 HP engine Briggs and Stratton MOd number 13AC762F7155 how much oil does it take and what weight and etc... just subscribed
dean wylie I am not sure what you are referring to. On this mower, the lower Drive belt goes directly from the pulley on the mower to the variable speed pulley. There aren't any pulleys in between. The upper Drive belt just goes around the three pulleys in the rear of the mower.
Thanks much for the video. It gave me the confidence to change my lower drive belt after it basically came apart. Like Dean, mine has the two pulleys in the middle of the tractor. This is a Craftsman LT2000 with what they call an automatic transmission. Other than those two pulleys, everything else is identical.
@@TightWadDIY I'm having trouble with the lower drive belt. Yours may be different than mine. I have a 2015 Craftsman mower. Between the motor pulley and the transmission pulley is a tensioner. It has 2 pulleys. When I got mine it was a basket case. I'm trying to put it back together but The belt is very loose. When the tensioner is full engaged there is still some slack. I checked the number on the belt and it is the one that came with the mower. I've looked at a lot of videos on these mowers but haven't seen any with the same pulley set up. I looked at some parts diagrams and the routing of the belt is correct as far as I can tell. The craftsman T1600 mower is made by MTD. Thank you for your response. I appreciate your channel. It's very informative.
hwally777 Ahhh. Mine doesn’t have any tension pulleys on the lower drive belt. It is possible that your tensioner pulley spring is bad. Sometimes, aftermarket belts with the same number are a big longer or smaller than the original due to quality control issues. That’s why I always recommend the OEM belts.

Glad you were able to figure out the issue and get it working again.
Thanks.
Thanks you for this video.
My Craftsman Lt1500 year 2010 is the same model.
From Puerto Rico a big hug and God bless you.

Excellent video I was at a loss as to how I could get it done and had no way to get it to a shop. I have ordered the belts and as soon as they get here will try and do the job. Thank You very much!
Glad I could help. Send me a message if you run into any issues when you are installing it.
Thank you and I will get back to you if I have a problem at my age I sometimes need extra help
Would have been ideal to show exactly how you secured the drive shaft with the pipe wrench, the trickiest part, but, it did confirm the method I feared would be necessary.
You can do it!
Thanks !!!

You’re welcome!
Thank you so much for tip on using the weed trimmer line to pull springs. Awesome! It was saved me so much time and effort!
@z20000z You are very welcome. Anything to make the job a little bit easier is always great.
You should always consider changing the upper and lower drive belts at the same time. This will save you in the long run and since they work together, they typically wear out at the same time. Follow the link below to view the video for changing the Upper Drive Belt.

Thanks for the great video. This also appears to be a Craftsman LT1500. It answered several questions. I am waiting for a new belt to complete the repair. With your video I should be able to get it all back together.
Stephen Anderson I’m glad the video has given you the information you need. Be sure to subscribe as I have several videos for this mower.
Stephen Anderson what actual size is the belt that goes on the LT 4200
The sears part number for the LT1500 is 160855. Sears wants a little over $20.00 for it. It is supposed to be Kevlar reinforced for the applicaton. I found a 1/2" x 95" for from 9.95 to 19.95 on Amazon. Hope this helps.
Stephen Anderson Thanks for helping out Stephen. I typically recommend the OEM belts because they are more likely to be sized correctly.
Great vid, as I needed to change mine. Methods worked very well. FYI to all, there is a spline that is keyed on the front pulley should you drop it down too much and they don't line up anymore to push it back up. I was wondering why it wouldn't go back up until I realized that.
I’m glad it worked for you too, Dan. I appreciate you adding info for others.
TightWadRepairs yeah, I have an impact and had I not thought about the way I went with it I would have set up for that, but would have needed an extension cord for power.
thanks! that front pully had me stumped!
Steve O. You are very welcome, Steve. It is much easier to loosen the front pulley with a pipe wrench but I did not have one handy at the time.

what's the difference between upper and lower belts?
Great video. Instructions sync'd perfectly with my '18 Murray M-115 38" and saved me a lot of time. My Murray has an MTD Model number so everything was exactly the same as in your video. Needed a breaker bar to loosen the spindle in the front but otherwise it went just as described. Nice job.
TheRobSquaredShow That’s great! I’m glad it was helpful for you.
Excellent video
If I never have to do this again life will be good. This a been a royal pain.
Haha. It’s definitely not a fun job.
Sorry to hear about your troubles with the MTD. Hope the videos help when you run into issues.

I took out 4 engine mount bolts and tilted engine left to right to remove and install belt on top front pulley.

Nice camera work, good video, time to give it a go

Thank you so much for this video! I was stuck on how to get that rear belt on. Your trick with the trimmer line worked perfectly!
That’s great! I’m glad it worked for you too!

I have a 1993 MTD 12.5/42in, they sure changed some of the layout, guides etc..
Grant W. Whitwam Yes. The are pretty different. We had a couple of those older models also. They are great, durable machines though.
Excellent video and page friend! I am going to tackle this as soon as my parts come in. Do I still have to lock the motor pulley if i use an impact wrench? If so, what is your suggested method?
Thomas Castiglione You shouldn’t need to lock the pulley. Let me know if you run into any issues.
Nice job,thanks
Thanks! I hope you got yours fixed also.
How do I tighten the motor on my MTD Gold
5:35 interesting as my mower looks like yours but my transmission pulley nut is a bit ahead of the lift rod whereas yours is a bit rear of it. My parts manual shows a different belt number. You belt is a bit longer than mine.
My model 13a3761g500
They typically make several models that look similar.
I couldn't get belt past left guide on vari pulley. I loosened 3 bolts with 3/8 head on bottom. Removed 2 of them and shifted pulley enough to get belt on.
Glad you got it fixed.
Great video up until the end. Maybe you could show or at least tell people like me, how the variable speed pulley actually just lifts up to accommodate the belt to slip past the belt guides.
+Monte Smith hahahaha, if I had read down on the comments I could have saved myself 5+ hours
+Monte Smith I'm glad you were able to figure it out. I do mention that the variable speed pulley slides up and down at the 4:40 mark in the video.
Any ideas? Thanks
Sorry man. Can you replace the whole assembly? Any idea why it’s not high enough?
Great video, I replaced both the upper and lower belt on my Toro LX500. I still have some slippage going up hills, is there a tension adjustment somewhere?
Did you buy the OEM belts from MTD or did you buy a knock off brand? Sometimes the knock offs are not the correct size.
+TightWadRepairs I bought genuine, is the variable speed pulley assembly middle fin supposed to be movable up and down easily?
+JerseyPrepper Yes, it should move pretty freely. You can put some 3in1 oil on it to loosen it up if needed.
+JerseyPrepper Did you get everything working correctly again?
+TightWadRepairs No, Toro and MTD share are supposedly interchangeable for this model, but I'm convinced the belt is 1" too long.
I’m sorry, but I don’t recall for sure. I would’ve mentioned that in the video if it was reversed thread, though.

@@TightWadDIY a lie
@@lorettastewart8732 What are you talking about?
The lower drive belt does not have a tensioner correct? im in the middle of replacing mine and seems to have alot of slack.
There is no tensioner for the lower drive belt. It just goes on the main pulley in the front and the variable speed pulley in the back. The tensioner is on the upper drive belt.
+TightWadRepairs thanks for you time. The upper drive belt is just a pain to stretch to the bolt.
You will have to use an impact wrench to loosen the bolt on the spindle.
Do you have a video on how to replace the variable speed pulley? i replaced the main drive belt (lower) and now it seems to only go in 7th gear wide open. We ordered a replacement pulley just need clues on how to replace it without killing ourselves, lol.
Sorry, Steve. I do not have a video for that and I sold this mower at the beginning of the season.
Cant get belt past pulley guides at rear, Any suggestions?
+CitizenKane380 Sorry, It didn't alert me to your message. The center part of the varispeed pulley(rear pulley on the lower drive belt) should slide up and down. If you slide the center section to the top of the pulley then you should be able to slip the belt out of the groove.

Having trouble getting the pulley shaft lowered, need a torque wrench 🔧?
Christopher Sidoti I made this video before I owned an impact drill. It is possible to remove it with a ratchet/socket but it’s on pretty tight. You could add a cheater pipe to give yourself more leverage.
A torque wrench is actually the term for a wrench that tightens bolts to a specific torque and isn’t usually used to remove bolts.
Ended up buying a 1/4 in. Impact driver which might have loosened it a bit but the final blow was done by hand 🖐. Felt good to finally get that pulley shaft down. Took 4 days all together. First time doing a job like this lol.
Christopher Sidoti I’m glad you were able to get it off! It always feels good to complete a project by yourself.
I’m doing something wrong on the lower drive belt. The front pulley bolt will NOT budge. Have an impact wrench and am afraid I’m going to break it if I keep at it. Please tell me it’s not threaded in reverse.

I just can't get the belt past the guide on the outside in the rear of the machine. I have the pulley pulled up, but still can't get it. Any ideas?
Alan Wuertenberg The center part of the variable speed pulley has to pull up higher to slip it out. Is it moving freely? If not, you may want to oil it.
@@TightWadDIY Sorry, I wasn't clear. No problem getting the old belt out. And the pull goes up just fine. I can't get the new belt to go in on the left side. Alan Wuertenberg If the old one came off, you will be able to get the new one on. I know it’s frustrating to work in the heat but you can do it! You may need to find a blunt edge tool to push the belt past the pulley.
How to put all the springs back for the brakes and deck

Why didn't you show taking the belt off the two pulleys half way between the drive pulley and the variable speed pulley???????????
dean wylie I am not sure what you are referring to. On this mower, the lower Drive belt goes directly from the pulley on the mower to the variable speed pulley. There aren't any pulleys in between. The upper Drive belt just goes around the three pulleys in the rear of the mower.

Wasn't helpful you didn't show how the belt run on the two pulleys in between the trans an the motor
Your model is different than mine. My model runs straight from the drive pulley to the variable speed pulley with none in between.
Mine has a peel the more you push on it the faster it goes
WHAT A PAIN IN THE ASS!!!
your video is imcomplete.. you did not cover the intermediate pullies... blown belt.. dont know what sides of the intermediats it goes on
You must have additional pulleys. This video covers ever pulley the belt touches on my mower.
So is it the upper belt or lower belt????
The lower was the one that needed to be replaced but you have to remove the upper to get to it.
