Ken was and is a great player. More importantly Ken displays at all times - even in his commentaries - a non self promoting humility, a genuine love for the game, a sincere appreciation of other players abilities and a becoming modesty when speaking or questioned about his own achievements. Ken you are a great and good man - a wonderful representative of our sport.
He seems a delightful guy I must say. I remember how pleased I was when he won. So refreshing after Hendry’s almost complete dominance of the 90s until then. For me KH belongs in the extremely good as opposed to great category as he won neither the triple crown nor a second WC.
They say if you meet a Celebrity dont approach them just in case. I've met 2. One was a simply awful experience. The 2nd was Ken Doherty and meeting my first celebrity was a little bit traumatic so I let him walk right past me just say "G'morning" to him but then I thought "Aww what the hell" and approached him to talk. I couldnt speak more highly of him. What a cool person and a gentleman to fans.
One of my favourite sporting memories. It was such a novelty to have a lad from the Republic competing at the highest level of snooker (we haven't had one since) but Ken always seemed to come up short - usually against the unstoppable force that was 1990s Stephen Hendry. I watched that entire final from start to finish and I remember my excitement starting to build at the thought that he might actually do it and beat Hendry at the Crucible, which most people probably considered impossible at the time. There was huge explosion of joy when he won that final frame. Ken was a deserving champion and he remains hugely popular in his homeland.
Become an even bigger Ken Doherty fan as I’ve seen and heard more from him as a commentator and pundit very knowledgeable on the game and a great bloke aswell
when ken won the worid title, a couple of days later he appeared at an old irish pub in shepherds bush [swateleys off the goldhawk road] no one thought hed turn up as this had been booked weeks before, turn up he did thoroughly lovely fella and great fun! does anyone else remember this?
I remember this like yesterday I was 17 at time im 42 now.ive had so many found memories of watching these players over years gone by. There isn't any losers in snooker anyone who can get onto a tv stage win of loose is a person who can play
I've always wanted to see after Ken winning the world championship holding the trophy, before I only saw the moment he won and shook hands with Hendry - thanks for uploading
It shows how great Hendry was at the time that Ray Edmunds still believed Hendry would be back to win his 7th and David Vine believed it would be next year or the year after, something it was.
Agree 100%. I think Ken should be spoken about more favourably in the game. Three time world finalist, three time UK finalist, twice a masters finalist, world no. 2 for a period and unfortunate that turning pro in 1990 meant that his career spanned the time that Davis, Hendry, and the class of '92 ( Higgins, Williams, Ronnie) were at their peek. He would definitely have added more titles if he had emerged either 4 or 5 years earlier or 4 or 5 years later..
Ronnie getting 165k pounds for 147 in 1997 and appearing in the world championship final's ceremony to receive it is just mind-blowing. Now I realize why he made 146 against Barry Pinches.
Yes, I remember that night so vividly. There was a bit more showbiz around snooker back in the 90s and 00s. Controversial opinion but I think the standard was higher; Hendry, Higgins, WIlliams, O'Sullivan, Doherty, Ebdon, Parrot were all really good players in their own ways.
@@cumha3527 yeah late 90s and even going into the early 2010s that was the golden age of snooker they had so many good players Hendry Davis O’Sullivan Higgins Mark Williams Doherty Jimmy White Paul Hunter So many greats played back than now the only dangerous players are trump O’Sullivan mark williams Shelby and higgins
As happy as Ken was I’m sure seeing Ronnie get £165k for the 147 was sick after the missed black Ken was phenomenal that year Not many people beat Hendry 18-12
Stephen was very gracious in defeat. He had a stranglehold on the world championship that nobody seemed able to break. As i recall Stephen was nowhere near his best on the opening day of that final, but that is not Kens fault. It took a great player to bring the might of Stephen Hendry down. Sadly Stephen was never quite the same player after this.
@@ianwilliamson2980 Once more. Don't get me wrong, still a great player, but his edge seemed to fade in the late 90s. To Stephen's credit he did win the title back for a record 7th win. Everyone's reign at the top has to come to an end someday, but what a great career Stephen had. So many great achievements, an unbelievably talented player at his best. I'm not sure how the current players would cope with a "prime" Stephen Hendry. I seriously think they would all struggle.
@@mrghiax It was Impossible for him to maintain that edge and dominance for the whole of the rest of his career. I think Hendry did still improve (he couldn't have won his 7th world title in 1999 without Improving further considering the players he had to beat to win it, and the 5 players Hendry beat took 44 frames off of him) but he couldn't really any longer improve as much as the others in the chasing pack could and did to remain as dominsnt as he did previously unless he could produce total perfection which proved to be beyond him.
Really? When Ken won in 1997, the country was going through an economic boom and we had several relatively successful years of sport, e.g the soccer team, Michelle Smith at the Atlanta Olympics in '96 (before her reputation was done for).
@@GodOfVictory501 Yes really. By 1997 our soccer team were well on the way down, and it was 2000 before the rugby bandwagon started. Ken was at the top of his game from the early 90s until around 2010. Yes, we had the odd individual that did well (Sonia O'Sullivan, Padraig Harrington etc) but none had the longevity of Ken
@@michealhealy2846 Nah, your original comment sounds like Ken's win was some sort of bright spot in a sea of collective misery, which wasn't really the case. And it's inaccurate to say Ken was still at the top of his game until around 2010. The WC final in 2003 was pretty much the end of his heyday.

I agree whole heartedly, Ken is a class individual all the way, great snooker lad.

That crackle on the VHS adds even more tension to this tense final.. Hitchcock would have been proud
Been looking for someone to upload this for a LONG time. Thank you!
No problem! I recently uploaded the first frame from the 1997 final and hope to upload more (when I have the time!)

any chance of the full match
