I put on of these on my 2003 Electra glide. Works amazing. I couldn't believe that a carb this good could cost so little. It's one of those rare occasions in life I guess.
@cowboy7x I have 42 180 in the China carb seems like the needles are blunt compared to reg oem carb. so u can get by with a smaller jet because of the taper of the needle being bigger I tried the 45 pilot and 180 but always seemed rich at an idle. Put the 42 back in an 2 / 2 1/4 turn out +or - 1/4 turn. bike runs good low speeds haven't had time to check the plug yet. Don't smell raw gas anymore after I set the a/f screw highest idle and brought back" idle screw" down to 1000 rpm fully warm. Bike has to be fully warm and these evo motors take a while to warm up they do not hold heat well. Those settings in my are 1700above sea level in south dakota.
I'm going on 2.5 years strong with my $50 cv carb for my 01 Dyna. Immediatley replaced all the gaskets/components with a james kit (the ones it came with were junk). Also swapped the jets from the old carb. Thing as been absolutley flawless. My bike never ran right with the stock CV. Rebuilt it twice and replaced many parts and could never fully get rid of the cough, plus it was sluggish off the line. Also would have to run the choke for at least the first 10 mins of riding, now its literally 30 seconds to a minute. The amazon carb took all of 5 mins to tune and has been perfect ever since. I did replace the philips screws with allen screws. Been thinking of trying a knock off Mikuni from amazon. These CV's are such old tech, even the cheapos are good. $399 for a new one is robbery. 7k miles on the carb now btw.
After watching the video and reading everyone's reviews, I'm sold. The one CV I have is in pretty rough shape. There is literally no way that buying a cheap carb will be a mistake. I was even considering getting one of those fancy $800 carbs. And I can't even remember it's name. That's bad. Lectron Carb ?? Yeah, that's it.
Had problems right off the bat when I bought this bike cough and spitting bought this Amazon carburetor and changed the jets to 180/48 now this sportster is ready to fly away I'm sold on this carburetor 👍
I put a knockoff S&S Super E on my shovel for $80 au, it had the same flat spot as the old S&S so I drilled and fitted an air bleed jet as the newer carbs and it works a treat. Usually first kick, ok carb for China. If it wasn't for the price I wouldn't even look at it, but it does work as it should and is very affordable when you are on a budget.
I have one of those on a new to me Dyna and it works great so far. One note though, those bowl screws are very likely NOT Phillips but JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) and won't strip if you use the correct JIS driver....that would be the case on the stock Kehin carb for sure. I didn't know the difference myself for years and stripped plenty of JIS screws. In a pinch you can grind the tip of a Phillips driver shorter and it will fit JIS screws better and be far less likely to strip them.
These carbs are awesome. These screws even on the clones are likely to be JIS rather than a Phillips. If you use Philips you are more likely to strip JIS screws. Very similar look however they are not the same. Some cheap JIS drivers will fix any stripping problem
I love my Amazon cv carb. I have a cup a/f screw on mine. I also run 48/180, she likes it fat. I tried a 46 from cvp and it still coughed. Overall these carbs seem awesome.
I kust purchased a jik with all the good stuff. Metal top hat. Allen screws. Relocated choke. Brass inlet for fuel. And black to match my build. 71 bucks shipped
Sounds-great .I'm definitely going to order-one . I would run the idle a bit-higher just to raise the oil-flow to the top-end (unless you've already improved-it ) Big v-twins suffer from this generally , even metrics like yamaha's (not the strato-liner though, very very hi-tec motor) . Dave Nz
After fighting with my Factory CV carburetor with a worn slide and trying to get it to run right I too decided to get an Amazon carb. The quality of the material and machining are excellent. Stock Harley or CV Performance jets will not work. I swapped over my CV Performance emulsion tube and jets and needle. Amazon carburetor works great.
I have a 99 road king with a stock kehin 40 mm carb. Had the typical CV COUGH until I installed a Yost kit, and it was the cure. Yes it is a hundred bucks, but it works great. I'm running a 46 slow jet with a 195 main jet. Yost gives you a hot line to troubleshoot, if you need to. I have no back firing, and no spitting or the typical CV cough. I would consider buying that Amazon carb if i ran into a situation like yours, but your old carb will work by using an ultrasonic cleaner. Have a great day and keep the shiny side up.
I will totally agree. I'm a car mechanic by trade. I've built many high performance chev engines. I have a preference for Holley carbs. You can clean them, rebuild them, and still have issues. Throw a new unit on and it can be near flawless. For these CV clone carbs, how can you beat the price ? After hearing many people's success stories, I will definitely buy one for my old Buell.
I just took apart my CV from my old Buell and it has a 200 jet. That's the only # I see. My other Buell has a Vance & Hines exhaust and a Forcewinder air cleaner. This carb either needs a going through, and a re jet. I might just go with a $65 unit. I've seen them advertised plenty and have always been curious. In my case, for 65 bucks, it's worth I try I believe. Why not ??
Can you give me the amazon link for that carburetor? The one you posted to someone else doesn't work anymore. Thank you for the video it helps out a lot.
I ordered one from Amazon for my 06 Sportster 1200C and three things i don't like about it. 1) the accelerator pumpkin nozzle squirts to the far right end of the carb throat. I tried to turn it with some needle nose pliers but it went back to the same place. Probably loose as the nozzle sits in by pressure. 2) the jet kit that it comes with will only work with the same carburetor but arent interchangeable with the stock carburetor as the threads are not the same. 3) the threads on the neck of the carb, where the filter screws/bolt on to are not interchangeable with stock screws. I had to go to 3 hardware stores and none carried the screw i needed. Closest thing i got to was a M5 screw but even then it would not thread in nice and tight. Im returning the one i ordered, hopefully the screw holes were defective and not threaded properly.
I have a Harley Sportster 883 my 1999 I have had it almost 25 years and she has four hundred thousand miles on her on the original carburetor which is never been touched. I am working to get her back on the road since I convinced the doctor to let me keep my left foot 🦶. Incidentally the motor is all original as well except for the stator in the primary which I replaced when it was 20 years old and had 250,000 miles on her.
I bought headbolts for my Sportster at the Harley Davidson official dealer and Received 4 Chinese head bolts!!? I asked about and dealer part's guy said that is how it is. Plastic parts for bike most are not American either!! That's why I bought a Harley Davidson, i thought everything was made in America. I am really disappointed. So now I buy the best deal that works.
No I like this guy I’m 68 years old and I do the same thing and you care probably the best spark plugs on the market since I was a kid I found this out you don’t want to throw a junk spark plug into a good motor and have it fall apart on you and take your motor out. Yes we’re on the right track.
Carbs should be cheap as simple and ancient as they are. (The first SU in the early 1900s is the first CV which piston slide design remains in production. ) JIS is the Japanese standard screw head used in Keihin and clones. I use the Vessel ball handle screwdrivers for all Keihins. Screw threads get a dab of silicone dielectric grease as do adjustment screws. BTW the two junk new plugs do have a use as an ignition tester since stock HD coils fire pole-to-pole. I tack weld pairs of plugs as spark testers because they can hang in space off a kickstarting bike and still fire. A zip tie across the shells works too.
I use them my panheads and shovels (kick only). To be honest they need to be modified to run as good as a original especially the accelerator pump, it doesnt work as it should. So, i change all Springs cause they are to weak, i drill the pump cover and install a bearing like original has and the squirt in throttle is good and by so is away the flat spot when accelerating.
I don’t agree with you on the plugs but to each his own. I do run NGK Iridium plugs in my Ford Flex and my old Harley Big Twin Evo, but my Ford Flex had factory Motorcraft platinum plugs in it when I changed them at 120,000 miles.
I got an S&S super e clone as well as one of these. The only difference in the super e that I found was I couldn't use the knock off butterfly in an original super e. Everything else interchanges. It was to big but the knock offs run well on mine. I even had a super e clone drilled for a thunderjet for a back up on one of my bikes.
@@STLNik I saw you mentioned you were running a 48 pilot jet in your video. That's pretty tall for a sportster. Try stepping that down to a 45. When I run a cv on my 1250 it was only using a 42 pilot and a 170 main. That's with cams and headwork. Sometimes that cough can be a rich situation in the rpm range. You could have an intake leak if it's wanting bigger jets. Mines notorious for that. I noticed I was using smaller jets in the knock off and it run a lot better. I just raise the needle if it's to lean. I also drilled out my slide hole and clipped a couple notches off the slide spring as well. Helps those cv's get off their ass a little better. Not many agree with that but I do. It's in Dynojet's jet kit instructions. You can download that. I run all my cv carbs the same. I just prefer S&S now after messing with em but I got a dear love for my old cv's. I keep a few around.
Accel plugs for older Harley’s, if you can find the NOS ones, are the only way to go. Especially if you’re running a magneto setup or something. Hottest plugs out there
I have a 2001 Buell with the 1200. I've tried every different spark plug going. The absolute best plug going for me,,,, Harley Davidson. NGKs are the worst. The bike immediately starts pinging. Adjust the timing to fix that. Then we have power loss issues. And yes, I'm using premium fuel. Anything other than a factory Harley spark plug, the bike has some type of drive ability issue. This 1200 puts out just over 100hp where the 1200 in the sportster is what, around 60 hp? I'm a car mechanic. For motorcycles, I'm gonna stick with what works for me. Factory plugs.
There's a hidden fuel screw under the neck of the carb hide by a Welch plug pull it out or cut it out I adjusted the cough or spit back out of them back the fuel screw out just a tad usely does the trick
awesome amazon CV Carb swap ..but any chance you could post an link to the exact one you purchased from Amazon ..instead of stabbing in the dark for one that maybe inferior Thanks in Advance
READ BEFORE YOU BUY A USED HARLEY CARB OR THIS AMAZON CARB! I purchased a used one off ebay, trying to keep with OE Harley parts. I knew I would need to rebuild. What I did not know is that if the previous owner removed and installed the float pin incorrectly, the float posts will wear oval or egg shaped. The float will never be able to seal properly and you will be chasing too rich/too lean conditions. I purchased this same $65 carb. The float bowl did NOT have an overflow outlet. I transferred over my jets from the Harley carb. The float was checked and dead on. There was debris from manufacturing. After cleaning it out/inspecting, it fired up on the first try. These carbs are cheap Chinese carbs and the fit/finish shows. But it will work great.
In the early 1970s Harley ran american-made Bendix carburetors. They swapped to the Keenan CV carb because it was $5 cheaper. This was about two and a half hours at minimum wage. Dish would be like $20 today. Back then if you bought a dresser for $2,900 I would have paid the extra $5 to have an American carburetor on it instead of having to buy an American carburetor to replace the Japanese one.
Harley ran butterfly Keihins after Bendix and before CV Keihins. All of them are tunable and easy to manage for me but it seems some people had trouble with each of them. We had customers beg to trade new S&S or Mikuni kits (installed by them or some bubba) for good butterfly (Ironheads ran well on Big Twin CVs) or CV Keihins.
Well that was very informative, I have been looking at these wondering why not. I have 80cu in. evo with a EV27 cam, what jetting would you suggest to try? It always smelt a little rich at idle before. Once I get the stripped screws out of the old one i'll see what jetting was in there. LOL And get that exercise machine out of the background before my wife see's it!
I'm probably late to the game on a year old video, but those probably aren't Philips screws. They're probably JIS. Japanese industrial standards. Yet have a different tip profile than a Phillips, which is why they're almost always stripped. it's a Chinese copy of a Japanese carb. So it makes sense that they put Japanese screws instead of Phillips.
I was given this 97 Harley-Davidson Sportster XL1200S, this Monday, but it spits pretty bad . What type of carb do i need for a replacement, this is my 1st one ever . I'll be 57 next month .
same goes with guitars, I found some Asian gits are as good or better made than usa made. for me it's no about logo's, but playability. I've got to rebuild my mikuni btw😄
poor quality control and lower end components. I've had cars towed in before with autolite spark plugs that wouldn't even start, throw a set of NGKs in and it fired right up. Never cheap out on ignition components
I bought a 98 superglide that had one on it I didn't know..well he put too big of jets in it so it is getting way too much fuel..went on Amazon got in touch with the company in China..I asked to buy a jet kit and an enrichenor thumb screw..they said they don't sell the jets only give them away and no thumbscrew..if you know where I can purchase these items please send a link..jets from a real cv do not fit..thank you
I have fitted my aftermarket carb but still get the same issue....when adjusting the air/fuel mixture is it more fuel or less fuel to solve the issue of the cough / backfire through the carburettor?
You could have several issues here. First I'd check if you have the proper jets for your engine size/set up. Seconds I'd make sure your not leaking air around the intake gaskets. Once you've done both, turn the mixture screw in until it softly bottoms out, then turn it out two turns. For a 1200 I run 180/48 jetting
@@STLNik thanks for getting back to me. Air screw adjustment seems to have been the issue. I have an 883. Gonna pick up the thumb screw adjuster like the one you have 👍
Im not a big fan of replacing shit that I can rebuild or fix. That being said, this might be a good choice to try out if a stock carb was absolutely trashed with oxidation etc… otherwise, if you understand how these carbs work and are able to rebuild them, then why wouldn’t you?
If you have a stock cv with no upgrades done its cheaper to replace it with this unit as it already has the common upgrades done. As well as it comes with a full jet kit. Price CV performance jets, they're about $5 a piece. After jets, seals, brass elbow, etc it just doesn't make sense
Too bad the Chinese manufacturers haven't made a knock off Electron Carb. Cause that's what I want for my chopper but 800 is hella steep in price. Haha
They are not Phillips screws they are JIS Japanese industrial standard . Phillips doe not go deep enough. Get the correct screwdriver. Phillips will strip the heads for this reason. Keihen patents expired that’s why these appeared on the market.
"Replacing Asian with Asian" 💯 . Anymore your just buying the name and reputation. I've learned that some "knock-offs" are made with the same quality. Thanks for the video, was skeptical about trying one. When trying "knock-offs" you have to go in it with the understanding that it might not work. That's the risk
Those are not Phillips screws. See the dot on them? That means they are JIS. Get a JIS screw driver and they are as good as Allen screws. You won't be stripping them out.
@@STLNik Yes. but then you run the risk of stripping them. JIS screwdrivers work with Phillips, better actually since they are not designed to cam out like Phillips drivers. And they're not expensive.
Get an S&S super E. Everything else sucks. I ran a set of Champions in my 49 Pan for 10 years. I also ran a tiny 12 volt battery for 10 years in the same bike. When I changed them, the plugs fouled in two weeks and I change the Battery every year.
Some of these reproductions have a loose air fuel mixture screw and they don’t set right like mine. Gonna get the original rebuilt, also don’t wanna keep a chinese manufactured carb on my American made bike, Have the Harley Davidson founders roling in their grave
Parts changer vs mechanic, hmm. I'll keep my old shit n fix it thank you very much. Everybody wants to be a parts changer. Thats why when you take your stuff to a shop it comes back the same or worse. And you pay for the privilege for someone to rip you off.
Those are JIS head fasteners, and there is literally NO reason not to replace every 'Phillips" head driver you have with a JIS driver. They are fundamentally better. Yeah torx would be nice, these are Japanese designed carburators though. Don't use a 1/2” wrench in a 13mm bolt, or a drywall bit on a JIS screw and you'll find life easier than when you did.
I read over and over Amazon CV. There's about 50 different brands... how about a ' brand' name?! Sure would make it easier to get the one that works. Anyone ?
Well, I asked 5 months ago, and nobody answered, so I'll try one more time... Nobody is saying what 'brand' CV carb they're buying. There are a shitload of them listed on line, all different 'brands'. There appears to be big differences in them, just looking. Anyone willing to give up the 'brand name', of one of these gems to help a fella out ? I'd like to have one myself. But I'm not going to just start buying random carbs, hoping to get one that works. C'mon, all you guys know which ones work.
I put on of these on my 2003 Electra glide. Works amazing. I couldn't believe that a carb this good could cost so little. It's one of those rare occasions in life I guess.
I installed one of these carbs on a 1996. 1340 evo. Absolutely fantastic - starts good - excellent mileage. Absolutely fantastic throttle response.

I put one on my 2000 sportster sport 2 years ago, all good. Just swapped an S&S super E off my 97 Dyna for one of these and so far so good.

I just prefer S&S now after messing with em but I got a dear love for my old cv's. I keep a few around.
Bike looks and sounds nice ..last video I watched you were installing your springer on a bare frame ..
😎👍😉
Thanks for support. It's been a lot of work.
Got one in black and love it
Accel plugs for older Harley’s, if you can find the NOS ones, are the only way to go. Especially if you’re running a magneto setup or something. Hottest plugs out there
Thanks for the tip!
Harley and the EPA will be nose to nose on how rich or lean these bikes can run.
awesome amazon CV Carb swap ..but any chance you could post an link to the exact one you purchased from Amazon ..instead of stabbing in the dark for one that maybe inferior Thanks in Advance
My app wont let me share a link. I always buy the first one that comes up when I type in "harley CV carb"
Back then if you bought a dresser for $2,900 I would have paid the extra $5 to have an American carburetor on it instead of having to buy an American carburetor to replace the Japanese one.
what the hell are you talking about?? totally irrelevant rubbish
I honestly don't know what jets would be best for that setup. Chopcult.com has a lot of information in the forums.
I run the 170 and 45 and it's great......I also have a evo with cam...cv knockoff carb
Thinking about replacing my Super E with one of these.
50k miles on my stock CV HD carb. Never been rebuilt. Just took it off the bike for the first time to clean it.
Thanks for video!!
Happy to help
hello! great video! do you have a link to it?
Hey bro where did you route the float bowl drain hose?
I always remove the float drain hose
You strip out JIS screws on carbs because you think they are Phillips. The little dot is generally JIS.
same goes with guitars, I found some Asian gits are as good or better made than usa made. for me it's no about logo's, but playability. I've got to rebuild my mikuni btw😄
Great to know
what makes the other spark plugs crap. I really want to know this.
poor quality control and lower end components. I've had cars towed in before with autolite spark plugs that wouldn't even start, throw a set of NGKs in and it fired right up. Never cheap out on ignition components
Curious to know what size needle is in Hop-CV carb.
I bought a 98 superglide that had one on it I didn't know..well he put too big of jets in it so it is getting way too much fuel..went on Amazon got in touch with the company in China..I asked to buy a jet kit and an enrichenor thumb screw..they said they don't sell the jets only give them away and no thumbscrew..if you know where I can purchase these items please send a link..jets from a real cv do not fit..thank you
Do you have an Amazon link for that carb. Thinking I may grab one my original one is getting finneky and tired.

Gonna pick up the thumb screw adjuster like the one you have 👍
Must have got a lemon my 70 buck carburetor failed after about 100 miles
Ouch, I've got a few thousand with no issues. How did yours fail?
Im not a big fan of replacing shit that I can rebuild or fix. That being said, this might be a good choice to try out if a stock carb was absolutely trashed with oxidation etc… otherwise, if you understand how these carbs work and are able to rebuild them, then why wouldn’t you?
If you have a stock cv with no upgrades done its cheaper to replace it with this unit as it already has the common upgrades done. As well as it comes with a full jet kit. Price CV performance jets, they're about $5 a piece. After jets, seals, brass elbow, etc it just doesn't make sense
I've ordered something similar after having the same problem. Has it been better on longer runs with the new carburettor?
I've put about 500 miles so far with no issues. Next month I'm taking a 1200 mile trip so that'll be the real test. I'll do a review after that
What air filter fits my stock air filter don’t fit the carb screws
My stock 2004 1200C carb has the brass gas inlet, how is the China one an upgrade?
They all do not come with a brass inlet
Would that affect performance? Or affect it at all?
The plastic inlets are known to get brittle and break. If that happens you're stranded
Do u have a part number and will that carb fit on a 04 1200 custom the carb on my bike is a 27731-04
No part number, but if you search cv carb on Amazon it'll come up. They come with a jet kit to properly tune for your bike. Jet size should be 180/45
What size thred bolts fit the new carb bolts bc the old bolts won't screw in
I just used the hardware that came with it.....
If you want performance, you buy the kehin FCR
Good video you should test more knock offs 🤪
China has plenty for me to test
Can you tell me which one on Amazon you got so I can get the same one?
Just type cv40 carb theyre all the same kit
@@STLNik awesome man thank you for replying so quick! Love your channel bro
Question...I have a buell blast 500 with a cv40 carb.... would this work on that bike
If it has a cv40 already then yes it'll work. As far as jetting? I have zero idea what jets for that engine.
Highly doubtful that will work worth a shit, if it does it won't last, Imo.
Time will tell, it's been great so far
Thanks for the words of wisdom.....
How do you think they would do on a buell blast?
As long as it's jetted properly it should do fine
@@STLNik sweet. I got stuck with two of them through a trade. I've never riden a bike in my life. Cool to see a local RUclipsr! Stay safe out there.
What pipes are you running on that chopper? Is it an 883 or 1200?
I have paughco gooseneck pipes and it's an 883
@@STLNik awesome, thanks!
Too bad the Chinese manufacturers haven't made a knock off Electron Carb. Cause that's what I want for my chopper but 800 is hella steep in price. Haha
If they did make one I'd buy it just to make a video
too expensive
Does it fix the cv cough
It has for the 6 or 7 bikes that I've put one on.
They are not Phillips screws they are JIS Japanese industrial standard . Phillips doe not go deep enough. Get the correct screwdriver. Phillips will strip the heads for this reason. Keihen patents expired that’s why these appeared on the market.
What’s in those totes?
Horse tack
"Replacing Asian with Asian" 💯 . Anymore your just buying the name and reputation. I've learned that some "knock-offs" are made with the same quality. Thanks for the video, was skeptical about trying one. When trying "knock-offs" you have to go in it with the understanding that it might not work. That's the risk
Yup. Sometimes you win sometimes you loose. So far this one has been a winner
Those are not Phillips screws. See the dot on them? That means they are JIS. Get a JIS screw driver and they are as good as Allen screws. You won't be stripping them out.
I'm aware as I was a Honda tech for 15 years. Most people don't know the difference or have the tools for them. A PH3 bit will work for JIS bolts
@@STLNik Yes. but then you run the risk of stripping them. JIS screwdrivers work with Phillips, better actually since they are not designed to cam out like Phillips drivers. And they're not expensive.
Ac Delco are made by NGK
I put one on my super glide and klr they run better.
My carburetor returns the chuck and turns off. I accelerate it and drowns.
Get an S&S super E. Everything else sucks. I ran a set of Champions in my 49 Pan for 10 years. I also ran a tiny 12 volt battery for 10 years in the same bike. When I changed them, the plugs fouled in two weeks and I change the Battery every year.
I also found a chicom super e knock off that I may test if this video does alright
@@STLNik Get the real thing from a swap meet. Just check the seats to make sure the needles were not over tightened. There is no substitute for S&S.
I don't disagree, but I gotta get the clicks🤣
I run honda spark plugs on my harley lol who knew
👍🏻🇺🇸
Thanks for watching
There's rebuild kits and jets are cheap.
Like video
Some of these reproductions have a loose air fuel mixture screw and they don’t set right like mine. Gonna get the original rebuilt, also don’t wanna keep a chinese manufactured carb on my American made bike, Have the Harley Davidson founders roling in their grave
American assembled bike. Harleys are filled with foreign parts. Even the stock carb is from Japan.
subbed/likie Thanks
NGK plugs suck, don't need to watch any more.
See ya.....
Just type in cv40 carb and grab one of the first few that pop up. The names change all the time.
