I'm a former Royal Marine (1961-1971). I joined as a junior entry almost straight from leaving school, and I passed the commando course about 6 weeks after my 18th birthday.
This was the best decade of my life. It was often adventurous and exciting, lots of foreign travel, a lot of good friends, and a real privilege to wear the uniform. This brotherhood made me what I am today, and I thank them for that.

@@owensanders7399 Thank you for your response to my post. Naturally I am biased towards the Royal Marines rather than the R.A.F. Of course the R.A.F. are good guys as well, and would be a good choice if you wanted to learn a technical trade that would be a benefit when the inevitable return to civilian life comes around.
I left the Royal Marines without any civilian qualifications, but with hindsight, I am sure that during my job interviews just being able to tell the interviewer about my military service actually opened doors for me. A prospective employer will know that you have a good work ethic, you will be reliable, and be a good timekeeper.
So, if you fancy a few years in uniform, then the choice is yours !

My cousin attempted to join the British army in just early twenties. They denied him due to a slight heart murmur.
He applied to the Royal Marines. They accepted him. He passed every test and every obstacle they gave him.
He's still a Booty to this day, true inspiration

That's literally happened to me got a setback cos of high blood pressure but I've sorted it out worked hard,got healthier and now it's gone lower took me 5 months,got my next 24 hour blood pressure monitoring on the 10th of August defiantly gonna smash it

As a retired Royal (73-79) I thank you for a well put together video.
It's nice to see that the training still seems to be just as hard, apart from all the safety cushions around the equipment on the Bottom field assault course and the safety nets on the Tarzan course (health and safety rules I suppose).
Salute from a special forces officer in the Egyptian army i made many rounds overseas and what i realised that no One win in the battlefield only smoke, dust and sorrow may God bless all my brothers in arm all over the world
@Dave Klonpenberg When there were no safety nets and the like, you held on that much firmer because you knew that if you fell, you were going to break something or even worse.. It was real (or as real as you could get without being under fire).
I was actually trying being funny/sarcastic, but didn't seem to work with you.
When did you get your Green lid if you don't mind me asking?
@Dave Klonpenberg No need for apologies, this is what the comments section is for.
Good luck in going for your beret. If you want it enough, you will get it. Remember, all the pain that you feel is only in your mind (and painkillers will help), do what the instructors ask of you and listen to them, as they have been through it as well (they really are there to help you attain that lid). You will get that Green lid and become part of one of the biggest family's in the world. Once a Royal, always a Royal.
If you need any help or tips, give me shout (although it has been 40 years since i was medically discharged, otherwise I would have been in till they kicked me out as being to old) and I will try my best.
Good luck for the future, YOU CAN DO IT!
@keirfree senior Respect to you Bud, I joined at 16 as a Junior Marine, started at Deal and then went on to CTCRM to complete the Commando tests. Our officers go through much harder training than we did as you can't lead people if you haven't gone through the same shit.

No 12 squad, entered Deal 5/9/1961. Passed the commando course just after my 18th birthday.
Having signed on for 9 years + Junior time, I actually completed 10 years and 10 weeks service up to my release date. I expect it was similar for you.

Me and my best mate was signing for the army next year, infantry soldiers but then my mate decided he wanted to be a royal marine I have a lot of respect for the Royal Marines and any service members Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines all of them help defend our country and I can't wait to sign in January 2021 🇬🇧🇬🇧💪🏻💪🏻

@@keithjackson4985 I literally work with the Royal Marines, they are over in the US doing Military games against them, and the royal marines have smashed them out of the park each time despite them being in much smaller numbers. And the US marines training is no where near as intense as the Royal Marines. It's 32 weeks to become a regular royal marine, regular times runs and marches, high intensity timed assualt courses, mental resilience training which stats show that the British Armed forces have some of the best mental resilience of all, they have to do a 30 mile speed march at the end of their course in full kit in under 8 hours (7 if u want to be an officer), the list goes on and on, the US marines also focus more on Land based objectives rather than Sea, which the royal marines focus heavily on amphibious warfare. Name one thing the US marines do better and I'll be astonished if it's true
@@keithjackson4985 US marines are very overrated. The most u see of them is in Hollywood movies where the majority of it is fake and tactics aren't close to being correct. They big themselves up yet they get beat by a much much smaller force (The Royal Marines) in their own wargames on their own soil 🤷♂️
