For all the work and time you two put into helping others be successful in the reefing hobby I want to say "thank you". You two have become so important to the reefing community, I'm not sure you realize how important, but a great many of us trust and appreciate you guys. I think I can speak on behalf of everyone, thank you! (now lets have some of that vodka!!)
Over a year later this series is beyond helpful, and a standard for new reefers. I've had freshwater tanks for years and always wanted a reef tank, but when I tried to do research previously, I ran into too much information. This series is straight to the point. I started with a 10 gallon almost 2 months ago, and now am in process of cycling a cobalt 40g. This series allows me to be on top of my game for my new tank and ensure success. Much love to the BRS team.
This is by far the easiest to follow guide I have came across, I have just set up my reef tank using your guide only. After hours of reading online I finally came across this guide. All information needed is in this guide. Everything is clear and easy to follow. Thank you
Thank you for making this hobby easier for everyone. You have made it enjoyable to learn, and have never felt like things were dragged on. The 5 minute videos do work, could of just asked us. You had my fullest attention every step and every video. My 40b turned out amazing.
I’m going to be starting my first saltwater tank in 2023 and will be buying my gear through BRS just because of how helpful this series has been. Thanks!
Thank you for not shaming those who don't QT. To many people do the QT wrong to begin with and prophylactic treatments done wrong is what leads to treatment resistant strains and is what led to a lot of OTC treatments being pulled off the shelves by the FDA. In most cases a 14 to 30 day observational QT and make sure they're eating well would be better in most cases.
Wow thank you so much for this series. I had seen a video that sparked my interest in reef aquariums. Then I tried “researching” through forum threads and for a newbie that’s an impossible task. An endless amount of conflicting opinions, some newbie advice threads are literally over a decade old. I especially appreciate you trying to distill this down to the best approach for newbies that mitigates risk. I certainly feel like this has set me on the right path.
For someone like me who has been saving and researching for a couple of years before starting in the hobby, I appreciate your honesty and all the work you guys do. Also, if you have room for a newbie I would be glad to work for you guys.
Just finished watching the entirety of the 5-minute guide (after having watched this "proof" segment hehe) and I want to say again, thanks! So much info condensed into consumable usable chunks. I can't wait to get started.
Excellent, Excellent, Excellent !!! - This is really unprecedented material and information that you have throughout your channel. I also appreciate how you keep improving on your content and upping your game !! Thank you very much !
Kept hearing your DOS running in the background. Thought it was mine. By the second time it happened, I figured out what the sound was. 🤣🤣 thanks for the advice on the AWC...works like a charm.
I’m in the 2nd month of Cade 1800 S2. It’s my 1st reef aquarium and currently FOWLR as I’m following the 5 minute guide. So far, so good. I’ve had zero issues this far (knock on wood). Fish are thriving, refugium is definitely growing micro algae and the pods are thriving. The hanks BRS!
Just wanted to say thanks for all the work you guys put into this. I'm an experience freshwater keeper with a long-standing interest in the marine world. There's so much information out there; and so many differing opinions on how, why and when things should be done that I've stuck to what I know... until now. After watching the series I finally feel equipped with the knowledge to have a go. The first tank is on the way and I can't wait to get stuck in!
After binge watching this series, I'm not sure if I should be excited, or dismayed. This could lead to periods of fund depletion/equipment acquisition intermixed with periods of living room decluttering/reorganization. I had a few freshwater tanks a decade and a half or so ago. I left them with my ex-fiancée the last time I moved. While we were together, she insisted on filling all our tanks with fish I didn't want. We're still friends, and she has since cut down to one 100 gallon tank. Unfortunately she's already gotten rid of the other tanks. Back when I was in the freshwater hobby, every time I was in a fish store that had one or more saltwater tanks, I always eyed them with envy. I always thought they were gorgeous, but also thought they were out of my league, from both a cost and difficulty standpoint. That was long before resources like this series were available. If I decide to take the plunge into saltwater, I'll take the slow and steady wins the race approach and slowly acquire equipment while I also slowly acquire more knowledge. P.S. There is never anything available where you keep saying the entire five minute guide is available, at least not with my RUclips settings. :-) If I exit full screen mode, all the videos in the playlist are available next to the right side of the video, while you're pointing to the left side of the video.
The saltwater aquarium hobby can definitely feel intimidating when you're just getting started. Don't overlook the All-In-One style tanks! They add a nice level of simplicity while still having the necessary functionality for a successful reef aquarium. Of course, we're here to help answer any questions you might have along the way too!
❤ i would like to say thank you for doing the 5 minutes guild . I don't have a salt water tank yet ... I've been doing fresh water tank since the 80's.... now I want to do a salt water tank.
What UV light did you all use on the e170? What compartment did you put it in? I have LOVED this series but the only constructive feedback I have would be to show more of what you all are doing/putting into the e170 on the backside. I bought a used one, cleaned it up, but now I’m not exactly sure where to put additional pieces of equipment or what filtration media goes into the racks. Again, thank you so much for your direct knowledge. I’m excited to try this all out.. and a little nervous!
We used the 15w HOB UV sterilizer from AquaUV. The pump we used was a Sicce 1.5 www.bulkreefsupply.com/15-watt-advantage-2000-uv-sterilizer-with-hanger-spout-aqua-ultraviolet.html www.bulkreefsupply.com/sicce-syncra-silent-1-5-pump-357-gph.html
Super great series. Easy to follow. Even better follow up! Great job guys. Wondering for the uv sterilization should you implement now right before you add the grouping of grazing fish? Letting your tank get through the cycle plus a couple weeks with the clown fish first
Awesome content, just powered through the 5min set up videos. I will admit I had a chuckle when they started talking about QT. I looked at the date and thought fish won't be the only ones QT soon 😂😂 Again, great stuff loving the content Peace
Hahaha. laughing so hard about to fall from chair! DonT be mad but no wonder the early days were so bad! Ryan editing inebriated! LMAO You guys totally kick ass and you do it with such enthusiasm! It so obvious you guys love what you do and it shows! You two are the caped crusaders of reefing! Love love love BRS! I have a 5 month tank with not one speck of algae ever and its a 10 gallon no skimmer thanks to the lights out method! I didit follow the rest of the video because it was from a previous one that you said no lights for 4 months! I didnt give it 4 months but over 3 and boy was it hard! Especially knowing I had a 1,000.00 credit i won from unique corals! haha. Now I am going thought it again with my 36gallon and still having lots of credit left and corals I am wanting to move into it because my 10 gallon is crammed! haha. Reefing teaches you that patience pays off!
Where did you place the return pump for the Aqua Ultraviolet HOB UV sterilizer on the E170? And what size pump did you use? I have the same tank, and considering this option.
Did the Tunze HOB skimmer have any of the same issue that the Hydor HOB skimmer had, with regards, to the varying water levels, and how that affected the skimmer? Since you don't have a sump and the water levels varied in the tank itself?
We used one of these hang-on sterilizers from AquaUV www.bulkreefsupply.com/15-watt-advantage-2000-uv-sterilizer-with-hanger-spout-aqua-ultraviolet.html
I had great success with that HOB on that 40 gal breeder on my 65, it was very easy to customize it and add a back up overflow in case of a blockage. That with a HOB Octo skimmer and gwala. Keep up the good work love the vids as always. I'll send a pic its really not too unsightly and very low maintenance. My best algae eater is a scopus tang and what a great tank mate.
Well, you guys have really done it now!! I’m stoked! So much so I found a used Red Sea Max C250 all set up with coral ready to go. Will look at it this week. Any last tips before I go take the plunge? Thanks again…
Definitely watch the full 5 minute guide, if you haven't already. TONS of great tips in that series if you haven't done the saltwater thing before. Happy reefing!!!
I'm a freshwater guy looking to try a reef tank and loved the series. Since I already have a lot of equipment, I figured the logical choice would be to start with the 40 breeder. While going through your videos, I came across the Fiji AIO internal sumps and was wondering if you think that would be a good option as it's cleaner looking. Maybe that, paired with the skimmer you used??
That's certainly a viable option. The Fiji Cube AIO kit is nice because it can help hide some of your equipment. Downside being that it takes up real estate in the aquarium, so you'll have to weigh the pros and cons when deciding which route to take.
What is the lightning in each? The 40 breeder has way to much disco look for me and I am lookinmg into lightening! I wish kessiis didint come in only the small circular single pucks! I like the hydras but afraid of that diso and not sure if they have a diffuser. I know you said before about kessil is easier if you dont know which setting may be to strong and harm corals and I am going up from a current usa so I really have no idea and afraid I may use to much light or to little, actually maybe it was that the spectrum was preset with kessil but something you said about the simplicity of it.
Have yet to set up a reef tank yet but am in the research phase. I like the idea of the skimmer and filter being internal, my question is since the products are made from plastic wouldn't they leak toxins into the water as the salt water breaks down the plastic? Does anyone know if these products withstand the salt water over time?
There are certain types of plastic that are generally considered to be "reef safe." All of the gear discussed in this series will hold up to saltwater long term without the issue of leaching 🙂
Love your videos!!! How did you add the hang on UV light to the 40 gal breeder? What would you say is the "best" most appealing way to go about it...it seems like you have to add another pump?
Yes, you'll need a feed pump for the UV. We used the AquaUV sterilizer that comes with a hanger spout, so no additional plumbing needed on the output side.
Not necessarily. With other techniques, like water changes, you could certainly skip the skimmer. It's all about balancing the input vs output of nutrients :)
The main difference in cost is the tank itself. You can usually find a 40 breeder and basic stand at the big box stores for about $300, while the rimless (and much nicer looking) Red Sea E170 aquarium/stand combo is just over $1800. Granted, the E170 comes with a light fixture, skimmer, mechanical filtration, surface skimming, and return pump, so there is added value there that you don't get with the off-the-shelf 40 breeder aquarium.
Vibrant will go after all algae, so it will affect cheato growth too. For us, it was a minor inconvenience, but other reefers have reported larger die offs. Best practice seems to be to try to avoid dosing Vibrant to a system that has chaeto involved.
You mentioned using filefish for Aiptasia. Once the Aiptasia are gone, don't the filefish mess with the corals? I see a lot of folks saying that filefish are reef safe, but only with caution or just not reef safe at all.
They can nip at corals, but in some cases of heavy aiptasia infestations, it's worth the risk. Most of them can also be trained to eat frozen foods, which will reduce the chance that they nip at corals .
What light would you recommend for a standard 20 gallon high? It's my first reef tank, so I will have mostly softies and LPS, but I might try a piece or two of SPS towards the top of the rock scape once I have more experience. Love the videos and all of the information you guys provide.
Just ordered a bunch of stuff to get a 85g going. Loved this series. Question on the filtration though.....what about a canister filter? I ordered the bigger of the 2 in tank skimmers. Was considering 2 of the in tank filters but the price knocked that back. So then was going to go with 2 hob filters but again all the junk on the back. So what are y’all’s thoughts on a good canister filter?
Thanks! Although canister filters isn't necessary if you're willing to keep up with the maintenance of a canister filter, which ideally would be every few days of cleaning, then you certainly could run one. A vast majority of reefers choose to avoid canister filters altogether since most tank filtration is easily achieved with water changes, skimmers and the biological filtration from rocks and sand.
Really enjoyed all of these videos. I noticed that neither tank was covered. Was this just for filming, and you had them covered the rest of the time? And if you typically had them covered, how does that work in the 40b, with all the hang on equipment?
A hang on sterilizer is probably your best bet. Downside being that you'll have a pump in your display tank feeding it. www.bulkreefsupply.com/15-watt-advantage-2000-uv-sterilizer-with-hanger-spout-aqua-ultraviolet.html
Just a quick one about removing cyano with reducing nutrients. I had low nutrients of 2 nitrates and 0.017 phosphates. I took my rowaphos offline to bring my phosphates up, I then got cyano from the phosphates increasing and being out of balance with nitrates. I then Re added the rowaphos to bring the phosphates back down and then cyano went away. So reducing nutrients does work.
Ok, so this one definitely didn't hit that 5 minute goal haha. That said, this was more of a discussion about the series and a good way to wrap it up rather than a part of the guide itself.
Ok so I want to run a 40 Bdr. But I want to go bare bottom, what do you suggest I do for Bio? or will 40-50 lbs of rock be good enough. I don’t “want to” run a sump. ( I will if I have to) but rather not I know I will run a HOB Filter for Media and I’m getting the new Sumpless ATO you guys sell. I’m not asking how to run it. I’m asking for your advice what I “Might Def Need”. Thank you guys. Your videos are the reason why I’m super excited about this reef journey 🎉🕺🏻🎉Lol
My nano was a 14 bio cube upgraded to a jbj 24 leds and a fuge in middle chamber tank is running flawlessly for 2 years 2 gal water changes a week with Tropic marine Pro salt best salt I’ve ever used! Tanks been running 12 years with my original fish a true peculiar and Pygmy angel
Hi guys thanks for all your videos, you menntion u dose Vibrant from the begining was that literally as soon as u added the start bacteria and do u still add it now and always ?
In this case, right from the time that water is flowing in the tank. It doesn't have to be dosed forever, but it definitely helps you get through the initial "ugly phase."
No build thread, but here is the link to the entire 5 Minute Saltwater Aquarium Guide Playlist where we build both of these tanks out from start to finish: ruclips.net/p/PLBaMLrfToJyxJ1PuJZwhkxvvdFP14eV_t
How well a refugium (algae filter) works is relative to the water volume of the system. The bigger the mass of algae, the more filtration capabilities. In this case, the refugium worked well, but was never meant to be the sole filtration for the tank, so we still performed regular water changes.
For the 40B tank we used the Tunze Comline here www.bulkreefsupply.com/comline-doc-skimmer-9004-dc-tunze.html The E-170 all in one tank comes with it's own skimmer from Red Sea.
Might have been already asked here, but too many comments to go thru...Did you glue any of the rock? I didn't on my last tank and it never moved, even with a wrasse and a shrimp goby pair.
We did glue the rocks in these tanks. That said, if you stack the rocks securely, you can certainly get away without gluing them. Just be sure to add the rocks first, then the sand second.
What wave did set up to aio tank? I got 20g redsea aio and and have 2 vortech mp10 i just used one. Is it beneficial to use two mp10 and what wave mode do you recommend if i used 2?
Two can provide a nice flow variation, but in a smaller 20 gallon tank, you could definitely get away with one MP10. We usually suggest the reef crest mode.
Hi Guys ! My tank was invaded by hair algae, it was pretty ugly ! i couldnt take it anymore so I went hard on it. its a lot better now, im so proud of myself. My GSP was buried. I thought it was dead. I cleaned it as much as I could and now polyps are starting to flower, however i often find one of my blue eyed hermits on it going to town. Is it eating the remaining algea on the flesh or can it destroy my GSP? hopeing you see this....syl
Holy cow that dude was dumping a whole cup of Vibrant into that 40 lol. A 40b is probably 36ish gallons I think biweekly that’s 5ml of Vibrant? Also, let’s not forget pods can really do a great service to keeping rock clean. Depending on your livestock it may take a while to get them self populating but there’s no downside to dumping in some tiger pods every month.
The dosing will depend a little on what issue you're battling, but here are some of the instructions. -Cleaning Mode - Add 1mL of Vibrant per 10 gallons of aquarium water once every week. -Maintenance Mode - Add 1mL of Vibrant per 10 Gallons of aquarium water once every two weeks. -Bryopsis or Turf Algae Treatment - Add 1mL of Vibrant per 10 Gallons of aquarium water twice every week.
At a small size, you can keep one in a 40, but will certainly have to re-home to a larger tank as it grows. A 40 gallon will not be a Yellow Tang's forever home.
I actually like being able to see all the equipment and not having it hidden. Makes it feel more lab-like or something. I can see I'm definitely in the minority with that opinion though.
We have seen this in some cases. Since Vibrant is a bacteria, it's reasonable to assume that it could be affecting the types of bacteria that are present in the tank through competition.
I'm not even into saltwater, just 4 freshwater tanks. The quality and insightfulness of this channel is so high that I watch it anyway
We'll I recommend you don't venture into saltwater if you want to save your wallet. 🤣
It honestly is, so now that a year has past, did ya end up getting a salty tank or not?! lol
Might be late but I got 2 fresh 5ft but got a marine now best thing I did
@@Slaz1969 yeah I’ve done a lot of fresh tanks, but once I went saltwater it’s just so much more interesting to me

UV sterilizers are a great tool to add right away. Just be sure to temporarily turn off if you're adding any sort of bottled bacteria type product.

11:26 Solution... make or buy a hood that covers/hides the top of the tank.

We have an ATO system in this tank, so the display water level doesn't change very much.
How did you set up the UV to the larger tank and what type did you go with? Looking at the easiest way of running the UV without a sump.
We used one of these hang-on sterilizers from AquaUV

These are the best videos. Thank you guys.
I'm with you with the 40 breeder stand. 40 breeder needs a diy for a proper stand. Also tank needs to be a couple of inches taller to be perfect.
I have a 125g that is freshwater, but I'm going to make it a saltwater tank. Should I use sump for 125g or can I use canisters. Best option 👌
Thanks for all you guys do! I'm curious, what wattage AquaUV did you use, 8 or 15 watt for the 40 Breeder?
I love the 5 minute reef guide.
Thanks Jay!
Bulk Reef Supply welcome. It’s a short video but straight to the point and has the perfect amount of knowledge.
Thanks for all your work! Do you feel the HOB fuge would need an upgraded light to do without the in tank skimmer?
Not necessarily. With other techniques, like water changes, you could certainly skip the skimmer. It's all about balancing the input vs output of nutrients :)
Im curious what was the average setup cost on the breeder vs the all in one? Im sure they aren't very far apart.
Equipment list for the 40B? I’m guessing it exists.
Can y’all do the light test and layout for the Kessil AP700
It will happen
How did your chaeto do with the Vibrant dosing? Did your chaeto grow as expected in these two tanks?
Most of them can also be trained to eat frozen foods, which will reduce the chance that they nip at corals
.
What light would you recommend for a standard 20 gallon high? It's my first reef tank, so I will have mostly softies and LPS, but I might try a piece or two of SPS towards the top of the rock scape once I have more experience. Love the videos and all of the information you guys provide.
What would be a good utilitarian fish for a 20 gal tank?
Algae blennies are always a good choice. Although not a fish, a small pincushion or tuxedo urchin also work wonders.
File fish.
Bulk Reef Supply got cha. Thanks for the reply hob it is
Really enjoyed all of these videos. I noticed that neither tank was covered. Was this just for filming, and you had them covered the rest of the time? And if you typically had them covered, how does that work in the 40b, with all the hang on equipment?
These tanks did not have a top at all.
i might be too late but how to you hook your UV on your 40 breeder? is there a good way to hook it up without making it look weird in your tank?
A hang on sterilizer is probably your best bet. Downside being that you'll have a pump in your display tank feeding it.

Thanks! great series
I like that the 5-Minute Guide is 45-Minutes on RUclips, fishkeeping is all about indulgence...
Ok, so this one definitely didn't hit that 5 minute goal haha. That said, this was more of a discussion about the series and a good way to wrap it up rather than a part of the guide itself.
@@BRStv : ))
Ok so I want to run a 40 Bdr.
But I want to go bare bottom, what do you suggest I do for Bio? or will 40-50 lbs of rock be good enough. I don’t “want to” run a sump. ( I will if I have to) but rather not
I know I will run a HOB Filter for Media and I’m getting the new Sumpless ATO you guys sell.
Great ideas and topics gentlemen!
I wonder if you could build a cheap box to go around all the stuff on the 40 to hide it all form the front view
Is there a build thread somewhere for these tanks?
No build thread, but here is the link to the entire 5 Minute Saltwater Aquarium Guide Playlist where we build both of these tanks out from start to finish: ruclips.net/p/PLBaMLrfToJyxJ1PuJZwhkxvvdFP14eV_t
How well did the hob refugium work?
How well a refugium (algae filter) works is relative to the water volume of the system. The bigger the mass of algae, the more filtration capabilities. In this case, the refugium worked well, but was never meant to be the sole filtration for the tank, so we still performed regular water changes.
What kind of protein skimmer did you use in this video
For the 40B tank we used the Tunze Comline here www.bulkreefsupply.com/comline-doc-skimmer-9004-dc-tunze.html
The E-170 all in one tank comes with it's own skimmer from Red Sea.
@@BRStv thanks!!
Fantastic information! Thank you.
Is there an equipment checklist for this series somewhere? Just don’t want to go back through every video again.
bristletooth tang and yellow tang in the E170 or one or the other?
One or the other 🙂
Hey guys love the video where can I find the settings for the primes on the 40 breeder?
The lighting video in the 5 minute series has it all
42:58 "it's not a goldfish", Ryan Goldfish have feelings too, now go and stand in the corner and reflect on what you said you naughty boy.
This is awesome content. I shouldn't be watching this. Might get back into reefing.
Hi👋👀
Greetings from Germany
stay healthy 😉👍👍👍
What's the flow mode on that red sea?
Those are set to ReefCrest at about 75%.
Came for aquarium content. Stayed for Randy. 😉👋
So does the UV on the AI Prime do nothing?
UV on the the display lights are what’s known as near UV. Near UV is more about color and potentially coral metabolic health.
@@BRStv Very interesting, thank you
Id use the breeder as a qt tank. Its made for it.
-Bryopsis or Turf Algae Treatment - Add 1mL of Vibrant per 10 Gallons of aquarium water twice every week.
good colour mate
Can you keep a Yellow Tang in a 40?
At a small size, you can keep one in a 40, but will certainly have to re-home to a larger tank as it grows. A 40 gallon will not be a Yellow Tang's forever home.
Ah, that’s what I thought!
But I want to thank you guys for an excellent series of videos on this topic -I’m absorbing as much as I can
Any filefish or just some eat aptasia?
Just some eat aiptasia. You'll usually find them with the name "aiptasia eating file fish," but if not, you're looking for Acreichthys Tomentosus
@@BRStv thank you. I wasn't sure you'd reply since last comment was years ago
? Yellow tang in 40 breeder how soon before it out grows tank
Probably have to swap him every couple years. Worth it :)
So where is Thomas from Big Al's and Natural Aquaria?
His first video just hit the channel today!
I actually like being able to see all the equipment and not having it hidden. Makes it feel more lab-like or something. I can see I'm definitely in the minority with that opinion though.
🙏🙏🙏
Invaluable information. Thank you 😘
It’s all apart of the cycle guys! Just keep up weekly water changes! Follow me @txreefer in the insta gram thing.
March 14, 2020 is the very 1st fish swap in the State of New Mexico, www.nmasaqsociety.org, great video. Thank you for the donation.
Don’t have too spend a Fortune on tanks 40 breeder so cool
What ever happened to Reed????
I dont care how long these are, listening to you two yammer away is comical. Great job. One shot for reef one shot for reefer. Lmfao
A lot of people on the forums are saying that after they use Vibrant for awhile - they get Cyano...
We have seen this in some cases. Since Vibrant is a bacteria, it's reasonable to assume that it could be affecting the types of bacteria that are present in the tank through competition.
