Eydie Gorme - If He Walked Into My Life

- Ms.Gormé was born in the Bronx to Sephardic Jewish parents. Her father was born in Sicily, her mother in Turkey. They spoke several languages at home, including Ladino, which is rooted in Spanish. After graduating from William Howard Taft High School, which she attended with Stanley Kubrick, Gormé found a job as a translator. At night she studied at City College. On weekends she sang in a band led by Ken Greengrass.
She appeared on the radio program Cita Con Eydie (An Appointment with Eydie), , changing her name from "Edith" to "Edie" and then "Eydie" because people mispronounced "Edie". She considered changing her last name, but her mother told her, "'It's bad enough that you're in show business. How will the neighbors know if you're ever a success?'" Видеоклипы
This song always tears me up. I don't think enough people know how good she really was.
Me too. She is unique! 👏
You are not the only one who gets teary-eyed. The very same thing happens to me, and I'm supposed to be a "mucho macho" dude. But this is a deeply-felt performance.
Me,too 😔
Edie was truly gifted. One of truly great belters. She blew out the sound system at the Circle Star theater in San Carlos,Ca. R.I.P
Agree, she's from my generation 1950s and went to my high school 7 years prior.
Fabulous voice and range
You have just witnessed perfection. For those who weren't there to experience it: Life really WAS this elegant back then---in song...in manners...in the very way we dressed and comported ourselves. Why, we even dressed up when we travelled by airplane. Eydie's performance here sums up the classiness of that entire era.
I must get in on this conversation, you are absolutely right and it,s sickening that especially now that today,s young people 35 and under don,t understand any of this! From way back up till the end of the 1980s this entire world especially the U. S. people got dressed up when they went out to an important place and gave respect where they went and especially to an event like right here and seeing and hearing Eydie Gorme and her fabulous husband Steve Lawrence perform was a moment of magic! It will never ever be like this again, Never, PERIOD !!!!!
Thanks for sharing your views.
@@janhammer39 You’re so very welcome. Thanks for posting such a classic performance.
Sure thing~!~ As a family, on Sunday in particular, we always dressed up
even if we only went for a walk in the city or town park~!~
My mother wouldn't let me even wear blue jeans to school,, because as
she would always tell me, "Dungaree's ....... are for farmers .... not school kids"!!!
So true...so true indeed!
Ms Gormet won a Grammy Award for this song. Wonderful artist.
One of the greatest singers, male or female, to ever step foot on a stage.
Don't forget Tom Jones
Amen
You betchum Red Ryder
@@erikaharriman7929 Love him, but he'd be a terrible Mame. :)
One of the absolute greatest of all time and noone really talks about or seems to care about her anymore and what,s even more sad is that Steve Lawrence will never be the same anymore without her !!!!!
She was the first person a lot of Spanish-speaking people saw on television, for the first time... SINGING IN SPANISH, in the very early 1960's... It really doesn't get any better than this, folks...
Desi Arnaz did it first
Wow THATS a Awesome FACT!
@@SolSeal2004 Desi Arnaz was more of a personality than just a singer. He wasn't invited to come on to a show simply to sing, in Spanish. There is a big difference. He may have sang a few lines of a song in Spanish on his t.v. show. He wasn't principally a singer like Eydie Gorme.
@@fakerating ààaàA
SHE was way ahead of her time!
No auto tune or computer generated music. Pure talent.
There are very few things in life that are perfect. This is.
Agree 100%
You're right! 👏
She owns this song. Period
Yes! Always! She is forever missed...
Her signature song. I saw her sing it live at the Westbury Music Fair in NY in the 1960s. The audience went crazy.
Best ever!!!
From beginning to end, one of the most perfectly sung songs of all time. Look at her eyes - she's in a zone.
Eydie's version of this song is THE definitive version, bar none. Perfection.
People just don’t sing like this or put their hearts into a song anymore. Loved her!
Absolutely correct 100 percent !!!!!
No orchestration like this anymore either
@@bigblue7597 Nope.
J Diaz: You're right! I love her, too!
It was because that generation had full-respect for life/living, having had endured 5 years of horrible war in Europe and the Pacific, then almost immediately,
had to deal with the Korean war.
This generation had been grounded in living life with purpose, and they
were (if you pardon my French), pretty sure of themselves, and didn't take any shitzky or stupid immoral ideas from the young people,, unlike today,, which
is a a frikken mess of immorality gone berserk!!!
She had a beautiful voice and so did her husband...Steve Lawrence!❤🙌👍
Eydie Gorme totally owns this song. What a powerful performance, of not just voice but emotion. My mother was not a fan of hers, but when Eydie came out with this song, my mother's respect for her skyrocketed.
Edit: Credit also to those magnificent lyrics.
That was the stellar work of Jerry Herman. A gift to musical theater.
@@biancatellington85 Did he also write the lyrics for Fiddler on the Roof?
No, Fiddler was Sheldon Harnick
Goosebumps all over....this interpretation remains unsurpassed....every word, every inflexion, every nuance of the voice and text,...she is living and breathing everything she sings about....this is the gold standard of how to sing the living lights out of a great song . Eydie, you are terribly missed.
What a great voice Eydie had! People can't sing like this anymore.
No auto-tuners or other tricks folks. This was real singing, singing where every phrase was connected to an emotion. Garland & Gorme, the two best email singers of the last century.
She was SIMPLY PERFECT, NATURALLY BRILLIANT.... We do not see talent like this anymore...Genuine greatness. I miss her!
Johnny Carson loved her doing the song and saw numerous times. It really does not get any better.
Simply incredible. The way she emotes, her power, diction and clarity are here in spades. I miss this lady!!
So great; I love Eydie. Yes, she had a pretty successful career, but to me, she still seems terribly underappreciated, given her ability to actually express a song with her whole being instead of just letting her great voice do everything. I so hate the fact that I never managed to catch her and Steve in concert.
My parents did many years ago and many times as well, they were unbelievably good in every way !!!!!
GOD! WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THIS KIND OF TALENT, THIS KIND OF MUSIC?!
birdsfan57 my guess is that the only things that count, are looks and gimmicks and it’s all about making money and record producers don’t have an eye for raw talent. Thank goodness we have singers like Garland, Gorme, Carr, Fitzgerald and the like. I often wonder what these younger people experience when they listen to singers like Eydie Gorme and Judy Garland? They must be floored!
AMEN! I do so miss it
You gave the answer right off the bat. We as a nation have left GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! When we were a country that revered God or at the very least respected Him,we were blessed in many ways. Having excellent entertainment was one of the secondary benefits of following God! Richard from Crimson Tide Country
women got rights.
This is spectacular and even more so when you consider that Eydie is singing live, not taking any shortcuts as other singers do.
The performance is an emotional grabber, showing how Eydie had the capacity to move her audience with her brilliance.
No distracting background dancers and all the glitz. Just beautiful music❣️
When I was a kid I thought she only sang in Spanish with a Group called Trio Los Panchos, because my mom and grandma played their records all the time, then I rediscovered her in English, and fell in love with her voice all over again!
So am I! She is unforgettable!! :)
Letty...that's funny..it was the opposite for me. I was born in 1949 and grew up listening to Steve and Eydie...love her singing Amor. So sad when she died...
Probably the greatest ever female singer. And she not only had unparalleled talent, but she conducted herself with CLASS. And class is sadly and desperately lacking in today's performers.
This is my favorite Eydie song, excellent lyrics and melody. 🍀
Though I don't wholeheartedly agree with you as to the greatest female ever (Sarah & Barbra), I believe she is close and I agree with everything else you wrote and greatly appreciate your enthusiasm!!
absolutely !!
She was hardly the greatest -- that's a tie between Garland and Streisand -- but she was indeed PERFECTION in this number. No one ever sang it better...
@@dannybex Streisand with her nasal voice ? Gorme was totally better singer than Streisand. Streisand had more publicity and made a movie career yes, but not the best singer , and notice that by 1982/83 Streisand was only 40 and the voice was in pretty decline, then in 1986 she was only 44 and in her concert "One voice" there was no voice anymore. In 1982 Gorme was 54 and her voice remained strong as ever and remained even strong when she was in her sixties. (Streisand in her sixties was simply voiceless)
Every time I hear Eydie sing this it moves me to no end. Great performance.
She sings this the BEST. Hands down.
On pitch, through the key changes, hitting every verse. Very few performers can match her today even with auto tune and digital effects.
She was Judy Garland's favorite singer....according to Liza
Eydie Gorme dug deep inside her soul, and delivered a song like very few can. That voice! She joins the likes of Ella Fitzgerald and Karen Carpenter. With one note, you know who it is. I love Eydie Gorme - pure perfection.
John Smith: Absolutely agree with every word! :)
I get chills everytime I hear her do.this you also have to hear Leslie Uggams sing this at a Jerry Herman tribute they showed him with tears in his eyes when she finished both women were amazing you can see this on you tube under Jerry's Girls I know you'll love it
Freda Payne who is a jazz singer she had a couple of hits like band of gold but she has been singing jazz for decades Eydie is one of her favorite singers how often do you hear a black singer mention a white singer as a favorite it's rare it's usually the other way around that says a lot to me even removing color when I hear one talented singer praising another that's great
I totally agree. However, you neglected to include Judy Garland who at her best was idolized by all of the ladies you mentioned. Oh yes, three more polished and super talented singers who also are great Garland fans are Vicky Carr, Connie Francis and Melissa Manchester! 🤔🤗
Yes, and Whitney Houston in early years...
Gifted..before wrong choices
Eydies voice was right there with Judy Garland. Simply amazing.
Better
Love her voice and how she puts her heart into the song. Glorious, pretty woman.
You're right! She is unforgettable!!! 👏
This song was perfect for her. The orchestration was beautiful. Just top-notch.
Thanks for tuning in.
Hello Terry how are you doing hope you’re having a great time with your family may God bless you and your family
She sings this song from the heart and soul. This is the magic of music, and Edie Gorme. Congratulations!
Eydie Gorme one of the all time greats knew how to knock a torch song out of the park, love her doing Grammy Award winner live, will forever love her..
Thanks for checking in with us.
A most underrated singer. I bought my first album if here back in 1959! This was a wonderful rendition Thanks for posting.
I really notice her breath control. These days, even with a good voice, so often the singer is gasping for breath or cutting the phrase short. Eydie is 100% a professional.
Eydie never ceases to amaze me.
She was perfect, unbelievable fantastic voice
Hello Joanne how are you doing hope you’re having a great time with your family may God bless you and your family
After a lifetime surrounded by music, moved and moulded by a myriad of singers, songs, and lyrics, I recently woke up to the realization that of all the voices and interpreters of popular song that I have ever heard, there is one, and only one who, in my humble opinion, ranks as The Greatest Of Them All. And yet, even considering the exhaustive body of work, all of it brimming with musical expression, uncanny phrasing and melodic elegance, at the peak of it, there stands one glorious glimpse of the perfection that the human voice can attain as a vehicle for musical, poetic and emotional interpretation. And even if Eydie Gormé has never, in my opinion. received just recognition for all that she was and accomplished, she did get a Grammy for this one.
Not one of the greatest...thee greatest. Her voice is absolutely magnificent. If I had to pick one singer singing one song that was perfect in every respect that you can classify a song this would be it.
So true and it is still an understatement. They just don't make them like that anymore. It must have been a crushing blow when her husband lost her.. I have had her records since the 50's. I am now 90 and have listened to her since my 20's. She truly had it.
@@ROBERTRIVERification My parents saw them in Las Vegas and Atlantic City many times and loved Steve and Eydie, they were quality all the way! The last of the Evening gown and Tuxedo husband and wife acts forever, so so sad !!!!!

OMFG, she has me crying!!!
Thanks for checking in with us.
She has me crying, too! What voice, what great artist! I love her always and forever! Thanks Eydie for all!
I must have watched this particular performance 25 times. I don't have the most trained ear, but to me, this is absolute mastery. Every nuance of her (their) performance is perfect: every glance, every massaged note, the phrasing, the strings ( ahhh), the big outstretched arms finish ( that's Eydie, Lol), the soft notes aren't too soft, nor the loud ones too loud.
I guess that's why I can't stop watching it. Talk about attention to detail! How much practice did that take?
I saw Steve and Eydie twice live. I found them to be so fun and entertaining, very professional. Can't pick a favorite between the two. Why isn't there more music like this today??!!
For two very important reasons: There aren,t any singers left like this anymore and most important, the young people of this crazy world don,t want to hear talent like this at all and couldn,t care less about it either! It is not just my opinion, it is a proven fact and if it,s really true, then it is unforgivable !!!!!!!!!!
Wow!! Best lung power in the business. Wonderful phrasing.
The best singers go into character 3 minutes at a time!
i remember hearing her and Steve Lawrence when I was young and did not have much interest in the type of music they sang. As I got older I learned to really enjoy that music. She had a fantastic voice and range.
If this doesn't bring you to tears, you're probably dead.
You're right!!!! 👏
Oh my goodness, that just brought tears to my eyes! What a song, and what a songstress she is -- so dynamic, so superb!
Me too! Unforgettable!
Fabulous, I could listen to Ms Gormet and Vikki Carr for hours.
one of the best songs ever
Nobody did this better
A masterpiece performance. So smooth and powerful. I adore her.
Before there was Barbara, there was Edyie, and she was just as great!
Greatest! 😱🤗❤️
@@CharlieChilders-wm9gb It's Barbra
Better
Edyie far far better than barbra
Excusemoi .... ehemmmm ...... that's .......... Barbra~!~!~!~
Eydie Gorme this song is one of the best ever!!!!!!!! CAB
What a powerful, wistful and intense song. The combination of strength, self knowledge, reflection and regret in her voice always sends me over the moon
Perfectly said
Yes, well said! She's beautiful....
You're right! 👏
Ms. Gorme released a recording of this song and it was getting air play before the actual opening of 'Mame" on Broadway. It was so popular that during the opening night overture for the show, the audience broke into recognition applause when they heard the music of the song in the overture. Our musicals aren't heard on the radio the way they used to be. The American Popular Song Book is never heard much anymore on the radio.
Eydie owns this song. This was her signature song. No one could sing it like she did!
Magnificent singer no singers today perform with this passion. Brings tears to my eyes😇🙏🏻😇❤️
And nobody ever will again, two reasons: There really aren,t any singers left anymore like this and sad to say the young people of today 35 and under don,t want it or care about it either, that is unforgivable !!!!!
@@scottmiller6495 I really agree😔I'm a young person and it feels i'm the only one who listens to music like that

One of the best singers ever. Probably the best version of this song.
She nails this …..just flawless and amazing
PURE CLASS AND THAT HUGE ORCHESTRA, STRINGS AND ALL
Wow! A real singer. Ms Gorme, one of the very very best. Sheer class.
I remember her on the old Steve Allen show. Powerful voice!
I can still picture my dad laying in front of the stereo with a martini listening to this song. Man, that is a fine memory.
She sings rings around everyone.
She was the greatest voice..so dynamic and the true definition of belting out a song!
how I wish they had singers like that nowadays.
Hello Ava how are you doing hope you’re having a great time with your family may God bless you and your family
She inspired a whole generation of singers. My God_ I miss this kind of talent!
Fantastic! Eydie Gorme's Grammy-winner, in a live version of Jerry Herman's masterpiece.
Even today no one can sing this song with such mastery and emotion. A truly talented singer whose voice box had to of been kissed by God. RIP lovely nightingale.
How beautiful. Those were the days!
I wish we had more singers like this wonderful lady. She was pure class.
The best rendition of this song ever ,Eydie sings from her ❤ listed to her sing this so many times gives me goosebumps each time , the soft notes and her powerful voice is the perfect blend , so much emotion , just love it sooo much ❤
Eydie Gorme = Perfection! Thanks!
That was just tremendous
The consensus here is right....unbelievable performance, one of the greatest ever !
The definitive rendition of this song.
Such a lovely, talented woman.
I loved Eydie her voice was magic i listened to her when i was young and it helped my singing tremendously..X
Thanks Andrea for the comment.
Eydie feels every word as she sings this sad beautiful song. She's about to cry and so am I.
What a set of pipes! She was AMAZING!
OMG what a voice
Thanks Gerry for visiting the channel.
I worked on the Tonight Show. It was always a thrill when Eydie was on. Somehow "everyone" would show up in studio for voice-checks and performances ! Sometimes hubby Steve Lawrence would be on the same show - double delight. Both were lively, fun and "regular"! You wanted them to succeed and they did. I think this performance is from Carol Burnett's variety show (?)
The pure definition of a "torch singer".....Marvelous talent!
She OWNS this song, what a voice
She also owns "what did I have that I don't have now?" Her belting and her flawless breath control are in a class all by itself. 😱♥️😌🤗👍
This is a real tear jerker..it's perfection...the arrangement is gorgeous.
This is Her Song, a Great Song spilling into many of our hearts!
What a voice! Pure talent yes they sure were made different back then. What a time to be alive.
Her iconic song. A great voice and talent.
In love with her singing... A great teacher... vocally fantastic and great breathing technique...
She's absolutely the best..wish I could have met her ❤😊
