Dracula ABSOLUTELY had personality in this movie. They just didn't shove it in your face.
He's in hunter mode here.. no reason to put who he is on display so the subtle approach they took worked very well.

but in the novel thats how dracula is,pure evil.a monster.it was hollywood that humanized him, making him into a good looking guy in a tux and cape looking for love, that was hollywoods doing.in the book the demeter crew were just food for him until the ship arrived at whitby england,i am just pissed that because eone distribution went bust and closed in the uk it is not opening here.i,m gutted really wanted to see it.nice review by the way.

Hitherto I had noticed the backs of his hands as they lay on his knees in the firelight, and they had seemed rather white and fine. But seeing them now close to me, I could not but notice that they were rather coarse, broad, with squat fingers. Strange to say, there were hairs in the centre of the palm. The nails were long and fine, and cut to a sharp point. As the Count leaned over me and his hands touched me, I could not repress a shudder. It may have been that his breath was rank, but a horrible feeling of nausea came over me, which, do what I would, I could not conceal.
This is taken from a chapter in the novel. Charming and charismatic doesn't describe this dude. After all he was based off a real life killer Vlad the impaler 😂

Yeh tbh I haven’t read the book just heard vague things on its plot from mates. Yeh that makes sense about Hollywood as my main knowledge of Dracula is wat I’ve seen in Hollywood films. He’s way more Nosferatu then Hollywood Dracula

@@petboy5839 yeh that’s fair, I guess the interpretations I’ve mostly seen are all sexy horny Dracula not the creepy monster

You are right, David Dastmalchian was sexy here, most attractive for me of the cast, I didnt care for the main protaginist - Corey Hawkins. Yet, the film was weak, why didnt they search for Dracula during the day? Lame.

Dracula has no humanity in the novel, unless he is presenting himself to Harker or in London society. He has already fed a baby to his vampire brides by this time.

Thnx for clarification, I haven’t read the book and I think I’ve been misinformed in the past about how similar it is to the sexy horny Hollywood Dracula from the old movies .

Dracula has no reason to be the suave romantic on a ship out in the middle of the ocean. He puts on airs in London to fit in.
When he's on the Demeter he's able to unleash his full demonic identity. There's no reason for anything else. That's pretty much following the book. He slaughtered the entire crew.

This is a clever and imaginative take on the story. It strips away almost a century of acquired nonsense: evening dress and opera capes, and gives us an animalistic Dracula concerned only with cruel survival and not seducing attractive young ladies in elegant boudoirs. It's a pity that, so far, it's not had a cinema release here in the UK because of the distributors going out of business. It's box office failure has ruined any chances of a well-deserved sequel.

Just being hungry was his whole motive in the novel, he wished to move to London to find fresh new food that haven't gotten wise to his methods like the villagers have, sure when he's well fed he's sensible enough to make the deal with Harker and go on his rant involving some good ol' white-on-white racism and make homoerotic advances toward Harker, but when things like Harker cutting himself happen his bestial side is tough to hide, so originally he's been just a one-dimensional predatory monster which i love seeing revived in this film, until Hollywood did its thing and twilight him basically (not dissing hunks like Legosi and such ofc)

Yeh fair , I guess coz I’ve mainly been exposed to Hollywood sexy horny Dracula that’s wat I see him as, haven’t read the novel just heard it’s vague plot but I may be misremembering it and thinking mostly the old films from the 50s

As a Romanian, I have loads to say about the depiction of Dracula in movies, but mom says I should never speak ill of family.

Sounds like it follows the book. He was a monster in the chapter about the demeter. The captain got a shipment, people started disappearing, etc.

I mean he's on a ship at sea, that's an evil killing machine. Of course he's going to unleash his true self. Wouldnt you?

This sounds like it'll be a film that needs the context of having read the chapter in the book to appreciate it. The chapter never even reveals what form Dracula takes or even how he appears or kills the people on board. It is mostly in the form of a log, written by the captain, regailing the strange disappearances of the men and the creepy death of the final man (other than the captain) who goes below decks, lets out a blood-curdling scream in his search for "the monster" & then jumps overboard because he's so afraid of what he sees.
Nothing in the chapter has anything about Dracula's morality or values, so it makes sense that they would just have the crew be food for him. Also, Dracula is noted to be a shape-shifter in the book, so he could definitely be a beast, bat-thing like in the trailers. Overall though, it bodes well that you thought it was creepy. I have not found a single review on the film other than yours, so fingers crossed I enjoy it when I see it tomorrow.

You may be right, and having read the book you may have more appreciation for this take.
If your here for creepy Dracula I’m sure you’ll have a good time
