  • They should have just called it "Vampire Boat." Instead, the clunky title is "The Last Voyage of the Demeter," which is as bland and forgettable as the movie itself. Christy and Alonso review the horror film, inspired by a chapter of Bram Stoker's "Dracula," about a ship that was doomed when the bloodsucker stowed away en route to England. Directed by André Øvredal, written by Bragi F. Schut and Zak Olkewicz. Starring Corey Hawkins, Cavid Dastmalchian, Woody Norman, Liam Cunningham and Aisling Franciosi. In theaters now.

Saw it Friday and loved it. The pacing, sound design, creature design, score, acting and direction are top notch for most horror films. At last, a Dracula as a primal, demon entity. What Hollywood does not need is more Jason, Mike Myers, Chucky, Freddy, or even M3GAN. It may not be your cup of tea, but it was mine. I want more films like The Lighthouse and The Witch.

It was QUITE solid, I thought! It was actually better than I expected it to be. The director took a B-movie concept and made a film that's about as intelligent and thoughtful as it could be, considering the subject matter.
I have always enjoyed the atmosphere of mystery and horror films set during this time period and the filmmakers did a great job of bringing the time period to life and overlaying it with a dank and foggy ambiance.
I also appreciated how practical and tangible and non-CGI 95% of the film felt.
If they give us a sequel, I will show up.

This was the scariest we've ever seen Dracula, I loved the slow pace, how Dracula was rationing his food, the way he looked, the small but to the point, back story of him and how terrifying he was to the villagers. I get this is not for everyone, but people who truly love a good old fashion horror movie, will enjoy it. I would love to see a sequel with this Dracula.

This movie did not dissapoint I was able to see Dracula in the most primal state being basically hangry and showing this side of him that reminded us of how evil, dangerous and how scary he truly is. Rarely I get scared with movies but this one I couldn't watch it at night time on my own. Dracula was the devil himself he was not only satisfying his appetite but he was also enjoying the fear and confusion he was instilling on the crew.
I totally disagree with the comments of these guys as this is your typical movie of a monster on a spaceship killing all the crew one by one. There was not more to it than to go and see the events unfold that we all knew as an audience that it was going to be Dracula killing the crew but we were waiting to see the version of the monster and how he was going to carry out the obvious.
A great movie a truly scary tale that moves away from the dashing Dracula seducing the ladies and although I am a fan of Coppola's movie, we all needed to see Dracula the way he was portrayed in the last voyage of the Demeter.

Well. Everyone has their opinions. And apparently here are some bad ones. The movie was great. It was a little long, but it was good old fashioned monster horror. It was exactly what it was supposed to be. They built the tension well, the score was good, the dracula design was great. It was bloody but not overly gory and it had some really dark moments. By far the best vampire movie I've seen in a decade.

The movie was so slow in its pacing I never really felt the anxiety one should have in a movie like this so I think trimming the runtime might have been a good thing. I saw the trailer months ago before Renfield and finally saw the finished product last night. Not a total bust but extremely flawed (and thank you for mentioning the overbearing score, Christy. Love Bear McCreary usually but his score was so annoying here with the choral arrangements and hard strings). So much potential here and it was all squandered at almost every turn. I feel bad for the director in particular because his Scary Stories To Tell In the Dark was excellent.

I have to disagree. You can't go to an R-rated vampire movie and complain that the vampire kills too many people in gruesome ways. Spoiler Alert: Yes, I do give them credit for killing the boy. Having this adorable kid somehow figuring out a way to survive this ordeal was the cliché that everyone had to be expecting. And the dog? I am so sick of people who get truly hurt anytime an animal is harmed in a fictional movie. Stop it! You can dozens and dozens of human beings getting slaughtered, but one animal gets hurt, and it's a no-go?

    • @adamCarter20
      @adamCarter20 Год назад +2

And for me, seeing an animal die or a kid, makes it a much better horror movie, evil doesn't give a shit what or who you are, it will end your life, and seeing them die hits harder.

  • @EpicFurious

Maybe it's because I don't have a kid myself, but what it showed with the kid was one of the only ballsy and/or interesting things in this film. The director can't shoot a wide shot to save his life and this film was just going through the claustrophobic motions of one generic character after another getting picked off. The Dracula look and effects were good, but that was about it. Just completely forgettable horror.

Yeah I'm with the dude, respect to them for showing the kid's and the dog's death. A couple walked out of the theater during the kid's death scene and i can tell it was the girl who couldn't handle it anymore. But in case you have been living under a rock, horror movies wear "people not being able to finish it" as a badge of honor, not to mention if you take the cool deaths out of this equation (which is literally the only point of this movie) then why even bother? That's like taking the cool deaths out of Final Destination lol. The girl is just trying to justify herself by bringing up that dog website lol, she just couldn't handle a horror movie

I am a big fan of Francis Ford Coppolas Bram stokers Dracula from 1993 if I remember correctly the date of that movie and i remember a brief reference in quite an amazing scene was shown from that movie on the demeter with a lot of splashing of blood. Bram stokers book devoted just one chapter to this section and I have heard also the movie doesn't really increase in tension or tempo in the third act which sounds disappointing maybe 2 hrs is to long for this movie.

I totally agree. It's a solid 3 out of 5. Enjoyed it but it feels like it's missing a 3rd act. In every monster movie Alien, Jeepers Creepers, the Thing there is always a 3rd act fight back and almost always they win. Here there is no fight back and they just get picked off one by one and it's game over so it leaves the film rather unsatisfying. They don't have to win but at least put up a good fight. But I get that's kinda how the book goes.
