@@BreakfastAllDayIt has a very comprehensible story. _Avengers: Endgame_ and _Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker_ are incomprehensible bloated messes, which only did well financially because they were the final must see end of a series of superior films. It was well cast. It wasn't meant to be naturalistic, so the occasional indulgent bouts of overacting were deliberate. However, the main issue was that it was written by Francis Ford Coppola without even being an adaptation from someone else, like _Apocalypse Now._ It would have been better being a somewhat surrealistic loose remake of _The Fountainhead_ which was last made with Gary Cooper.

It’s about a man with a vision, who sacrifices everything (including his wife, whom he still loves) so that he may see that vision come to fruition. And he cares about art and culture and is not like all these young wannabes, who care about nothing, but he also adores beautiful women, and is so burdened by his own genius. In other words: it’s a film by Coppola about Coppola. I mean, he’s literally getting time to stop and start throughout the movie by just asking it to, much like a director yelling “action!” and “cut!” This film is so up its own ass, it asked for a breath mint when it came out the other end.
As I put it, once it was all said and done: “It’s a Joel Schumacher wet dream about the worst play Shakespeare never wrote, as imagined by Baz Luhrmann.”

I'm just happy that in 2024 I can see an insane new original film by the master F.F. Coppola. Something that has been worked on for so long is bound to be messy. I think he's just too far gone and mythologised to be bothered to 'fit in' the film business. So good for him, I'll go buy my ticket.

It might not be everyone's cup of tea but if you want something to chew on after the first viewing, I recommend it. Then go see it again and like repeated viewings of Apocalypse Now, you will experience the film differently than the first time.

The way that Christie describes this movie makes it sound like something I'm going to love. Usually the movies that critics say are "all over the place" are movies that I love. For example: I think Babylon, Suspiria (2018), and Beau is Afraid are masterpieces. And Coppola is a master. Anything he does, regardless of "fun" or whatever, is going to be a real piece of art. I can't wait to see what he cooked with this. It looks gorgeous and insane and I'm here for that.

I will always root for Francis. Watching the UK television debut of Apocalypse Now as a teenager was a life-changing event. Shortly after, I watched a cinema double-bill of The Outsiders and Rumble Fish. He’s had so many ups and downs over the decades but who will ever forget the brilliance of The Conversation, Apocalypse Now, and the two Godfather films? I’m disturbed by how many “film fans” out there are rooting for the failure of his new film. Probably his last ever film. And yes, Megalopolis DOES look awful but I always root for Francis.

As someone who has studied and appreciates experimental filmmaking, I found it to be visionary and epic pushing at the limitations of narrative filmmaking. It's not a cohesive story because it's not meant to be. It's multilayered and complex and functions as close to filmic poetry as has ever been attempted by a Hollywood filmmaker. While not for everyone, I was more than thoroughly entertained and can't wait to see it again. I truly believe it will age well and someday be held as a work of power by a great artist.

Thank you for mentioning the role of women in the movie. I felt the same way. This movie was very middle of the road with a dated feeling. Scenes and lines were lifted from other movies. Underwater scene from "Night of the Hunter", shots from the Batman tv show, a line from "Mildred Pierce"(the actress is no Eve Arden), a final scene that was Looney Tunes or Three Stooges. The styling and costuming for Julia and Caesar's mothers was very Mary McFadden, a dead wife Sunny who was possibly killed by an insulin overdose, and quite a few others. The movie was okay. The running time went by faster than I expected. Parts of it were enjoyable. Not over the top enough to be artistic genius. I always enjoy your reviews!

When I had read about it I thought it was an actual live interaction with Adam's character as though there'd be very limited times where he'd dress up and actually be on Zoom for all the showings happening at X time.

Honestly loved the film. It’s abstract art, but if you enjoy abstract art like I do you’ll love it. It’s a farce, social commentary about generational conflict over the passing on of responsibility, and Coppola’s views on our world/life/ and a vision of the future wrapped up in a surreal love story. So many cool camera effects and tricks that were masterfully done by Roman Coppola, who did the same on Dracula. I was ready for the film to be bad after seeing first response, but really enjoyed it and was pleasantly surprised. It’s unapologetic art and doesn’t beg the audience to like it like many of Hollywood films.

    • @maxcalder1010
      @maxcalder1010 4 месяца назад

I have to admit I worked a day on the film doing stunts but didn’t get used on the day and hung out on set. I’ve worked on plenty of bad movies though and never afraid to criticize something I’ve worked on. I also saw it with my friend who worked on it in the camera department too. So we wanted it to be good, but we were both ready to for it to maybe be bad based on what we heard. She actually saw a rough cut a while ago that worried her. But after it was over we both loved what we saw and thought it achieved what Coppola wanted it to. It was want perfect by any means, but it was bold, and from someone who is 85 who wanted to put this out into the world before he goes I greatly respect that. The worst thing a movie can do is be boring and that’s what I was expecting based on early reviews, but this was the complete opposite!

Great review. You can tell that both of them, but especially Alonso, wanted to like this movie. From what I'm finding out about Megalopolis, it sounds a little like True Detective Season 2. Both projects needed to work on the scripts a lot more before they went into production.

At first it sounded to me like another movie loosely based on the '80's/'90's comic book _Mr._ _X_ (which I've always thought "Dark City" was), but then I remembered the original Architect Hero story _Atlas_ _Shrugged_ (turned into a so-so Gary Cooper movie). I'm very anxious to see this Coppola epic!

I enjoyed watching it because the cinematography was beautiful but the story was all over the place. Nathalie Emmanuel and Aubrey Plaza gave great performances. Honestly Sofia Coppola probably would have directed it more successfully. “Marie Antoinette” combined historic and contemporary (historic and futuristic here) much better than this film did. Worth seeing in a theater just for the spectacle of it though. Great video!

I don't understand how 85% of reviewers are just shrugging and glossing over the actual message of the movie, how humankind should reach for the next phase bravely before it all comes down collapsing. and much more... sure, there's lot to criticize but come on, there's more to it.

It’s totally insane and i liked it. It’s not amazing. It’s not terrible; it’s not even bad. I liked it, because, i repeat, it’s totally insane. And there aren’t enough totally insane movies. Hollywood keeps making Snickers bars. Don’t get me wrong, I like Snickers. But if that’s all there is to eat, you need something different.
I think it’s easy to miss the sicko humor under the surface in even the ‘serious’ moments, and read the whole film as being pretentious. It’s not pretentious, it’s just… boomer intellectual. I can deal with that, being a Gen X person who reads books for fun. It certainly won’t be a crowd pleaser. But it’s not trying to be. All it’s trying to do is ask one question: can we not work with people we don’t agree with, to build a better world for our children and grandchildren?
I have to disagree dude, Aubrey Plaza was riveting (and hilarious) as an evil sex monster. And i feel like i got my moneys worth just from her performance.

I think a lot of writing and other artistic projects are like cooking. You need to know what your ingredients are and how they work together and what exactly you want to produce. And it is ultimately far more about the preparation and planning than it is about the cooking itself. I have not seen this movie yet but all the reviews I have seen give the impression that although this was a much cherished project to which the director had invested a great deal (including $160m) certain aspects of the preparation and structure were not coherently thought through and done carefully enough. When I do see the movie (which I am now extremely curious about) it will be interesting to see if I am at all right about this. I reserve complete judgement until then.
