I actually really liked this movie. It feels so different from not only other claustrophobic monster movies, but other Dracula adaptations. I love the cast. I LOVE this intelligent predator version of Dracula.

Can we all agree that the scene when dracula is holding clemens from the neck and clemens says “i am not afraid of you” and dracula responds with “you will be” was probably one of the best scenes in the movie especially since you barely hear dracula talk at all so whenever he does its super creepy and gives you goosebumps, regardless this movie was honestly really good and i hope people dont sleep on it.

This movie frustrated me so much, they found his box after searching to see where he sleeps and didn't throw it off the boat immediately upon finding it, and they didn't explain what could be in the other boxes 38 boxes aside from dirt. Like am I missing something?

    • @donovanbradford8231
      @donovanbradford8231 Год назад +3

I do agree there was a plot hole there. As far as not throwing everything overboard that doesn't occur in the box which is still the source material. But I would assume by that point in the story there may not have been enough time to get everything off the boat before nightfall or not enough people. Or there still might have been the thought in their heads if we get rid of the cargo there goes our bonus not realizing your bonus is paid by the cery monster they hunt. Given the ending of the film they did seem to be setting this up for future films with the lead tracking Dracula down in England, but unless physical media and stream sales explode there is no chance that happens.

    • @donovanbradford8231

Part of me thinks the reason many disliked the film was either thry weren't familiar with the book as questions like, why not get rid of the boxes once they discovered he was in them, forgetting that never happened in the source material. Or possibly because it's not a faithful Dracula story it could have upset purist fans of the character. Myself I enjoyed as a solid monster movie for sure, but did see a flaw in that this Dracula is a monster vs say the book Dracula is not only an evil monster but a very cunning tactician bringing so many boxes to scatter over London so he could freely hunt prey without fear if discovery or getting caught in sunlight. This Dracula didn't seem capable of that type of thought to me that is.

At its best: it shows just how much of a powerful demon Dracula really. His few lines work, especially "you will be" in response to Clemens defiantly saying he refused to fear the vampire (if I recall it right). It also dips well into how a crew could work.
At its worst: I now know for certain it deviates a bit too hard and the pacing could have used work.

However I don't see a sequel in the future because what I heard the film's international distributor was bought out by someone and the film only had a U.S. release as several people I know in England stilll have not seen it and really want to. So with only domestic sales I don't see the film making enough money to get a sequel. The only chance would be if streaming and physical media sales go through the roof and the studio does turn a profit. Which is disappointing because I would have enjoyed to see to where a sequel would have gone either in an original direction or in a Sherlock Holmes meets Dracula where characters of the book are replaced or changed to be Holmes and Watson.

It is not like they are travelling from New York to London. Varna to London means there are so many ports where they could escape.
They could also simply set fire to the ship at sunrise and sail away with the rescue boat to safety. He can't escape in the sun so he either drowns or burns. The end.

Dracula would probably only be savage towards the end, especially if he doesn’t want people seeing that cargo and getting too suspicious of the fact that it’s the only thing that survived the voyage. Back then, superstition was absolutely a living, viable thing and they’d probably think something cursed happened on the ship.

Great example was when they placed snipers in the crow's nest without knowing Dracula could fly. I just finished the movie and it was pretty mid for me, they had great ideas for what could have easily happened in the book, but there's some things that just pulled me out of the film. I won't ruin the end, but it was very inconsistent for dramatic effect at the last encounter with the count on the Demeter, but it was the introduction of two of the new characters (for checks most likely) that really pulled me out. Not that they didn't do fine acting, but story wise it turned a movie that could have been a vampire version of alien into your typical vow of revenge ending that if you've even vicariously read or even heard the original story, knows the character that makes it doesn't do anything in the end because of the original book. I understand that changes should be made to at least attempt to stir things up a bit, but it really could have been better than what they made, I even like the more simplistic depiction of dracula than something that they could have easily done, but being a history enthusiast they came very close to jumping the shark. Not bad, but could have been great.

Others were done more so because of the mindset of Hollywood today particularly the addition of Clemson and Anna and those two characters while played well were done to check very specific boxes of film today. I would have been interested to see how a sequel would have played because I do think Clemson would have taken the part of one of the other characters from Stoker's novel, as I've read Sherlock Holmes meets Dracula and in that parts are change to insert Holmes primarily for the part of Van Helsing and Watson for several parts if Johnathan. So curious what this film would have done for a sequel.

I've never read the original Dracula, but after seeing this movie I should definitely look into it.
Personally, I loved the film. Did it have problems? Of course it did: It didn't need to be two hours long, some of the more depressing moments dragged on, Dracula didn't have a whole lot of personality, and that tacked on, sequel-bait ending was really unneeded.
Still, I had a great time with the film. They did a fantastic job re-capturing the atmosphere and feelings of isolation, dread and horror from Alien, to the point where I had trouble sleeping the night after I watched the film. The characters were likable despite not having a whole lot to them, Bear McCreary's score, while not his best, is still great to listen to, and then there's Dracula himself.
Despite his lacking personality, I loved this Jeepers Creepers-esque take on the character. Compared to the many, *many* incarnations of Dracula in the past (let's see: a tragic sexyman figure, a straight up over-the-top monster, an entity with nearly enough power and presence to rival a Lovecraftian Old One, Bela Lugosi and his immitaters, etc, to everything in-between), this honestly felt like a fresh take on him. On that note, while I dislike the sequel-bait ending, there were elements about it that I liked, like the idea of Clemens becoming a Van Helsing-type character, and Dracula's 'human' disguise being a nod to Count Orlok from Nosferatu (which also, again, gave me severe Jeepers Creepers vibes. As in they could pass for creepy old humans from afar, but up close, that's when you know something is very wrong and you wanna run for it).
Overall, is it my favorite horror-monster film of the year? Probably not, Evil Dead: Rise is more enjoyable for me, but I think its a great and well-made film that I hope will become a cult classic in the future.

The ending inside the pub was my favorite part. Loved Dracula wasn't romantic in this.

I kind of wish Clemons had died at the end and I do have a few other issues with the movie, but overall I actually think it was way better than a lot of more recent horror movies. It was pretty good as a whole.

Clemens does die off screen when Dracula traps him alone at night the pounding of the wolf cane on the floor was to mock him.

We need more film on sets. I’m so tired of every movie looking like a video game, or set in a desert…
