9:09 - it's actually in the book. When Jonathan Harker goes to his castle in the beginning (before the Demeter ride), it's revealed that Dracula learned English for his upcoming move to England.
( I don't know where he got the 'true love' or whatever he talked about in the beginning )

Yeah, the love story is not in the book.. but they added it in the movie with Gary Oldman, where Dracula’s wife looks exactly like Mina - so that’s probably where that comes from

Minor correction: book Dracula has no "true love". He's just evil. He goes to London because he considers it the center of the (then) modern world. And I personally found the book parts of the Demeter story rather creepy. Not much to say about the creature design. I think you have to have monstrous Dracula here. Suave human seeming Dracula snack attacking crewmen would just be silly. All in all though, I'm glad they at least attempted this. It's a neat idea and does something new with existing material.

I’m just writing this within the first three minutes of the video maybe it’s addressed later on. But I think it makes sense for Dracula to be in this inhuman demon form on the Demeter. He doesn’t have to be the charismatic ladies man that he pretends to be on a boat full of sailors that he can feed on the fear of. He can let loose as they say

I don't think the host read the book. The movie put in the love story, it wasn't present in the novel. Dracula could become a nasty monster in the book and even when he took a human form he had that uncanny valley feel. He wasn't a twilight vampire lol This is classic Dracula before Hollywood came in, which is kind of ironic considering lol

the oddest thing about the sunlight bit is that, in the orignal novel, sunlight never *killed* dracula--that trope originated with noseferatu. in the novel, the sunlight just slightly weakened drac but at multiple points he moves around in the sunlight. tmi he just prefers walking around at night because that's when he's stronger, plus it's harder for humans to notice that he doesn't cast a shadow

I would say the reason he doesn’t go a bit more human on the boat is because he doesn’t have to, he knows he’s going to kill everyone so there’s no point expending the energy to disguise himself as a human

This moive adds four characters that were not in the original book and completely emasculates the captain, (who is the HERO in the book). They also completely eliminate the idea that Dracula is afraid of the cross.
Btw, the characters added were the know-it-all black guy, the mary sue, some kid to make the captain weaker, and some religious filipino who dies because his cross does nothing to protect him.
In other words, this movie is woke trash. They even include a random, out of place speech about the black guy's skin color.

I foresee two possible ways this ending could tie in to the original Dracula storyline, while wrapping up Clemens’s story. In my opinion, either:
    1. Clemens goes mano a mano with Dracula in that alleyway and gets turned into dessert, or
    2. Clemens loses sight of Dracula and later links up with Jonathan Harker, Mina, Professor Van Helsing, and the rest to go after Dracula then.
Ever since I saw this movie, I have started picturing Clemens as one of the unnamed side characters in Bram Stoker’s Dracula(1992) that takes part in the final race to Dracula’s castle, if the second theory is what you subscribe to. Either way, that’s just my opinion.

Another great review Chris. There is a scene in the blaxploitation film called Blacula that I want to reference here. They realize they are dealing with a vampire and so they try to attack the coffin, but it is surrounded by his turned minions. After a grueling battle, Blacula appears outside of the now burning building the heroes set fire to in order to stop Blacula's minions. Blacula appears outside and gloats telling them that he was on to them. A similar situation happens in the cult classic Fright Night 2 when Charlie Brewster attempts to destroy the countess coffin, but she appears and tells them that she has others stashed in different places. So, getting the coffin outside probably would not have worked. They were pretty much eff'd and the best strategy to survive was to not only abandon ship, but to do it at first light. If they had any type of bleach like material or something to throw off Drac's sense, then that would be encouraged as well. Also, we are dealing with guys who were not known for intelligence. This is why the only intelligent guy survived the situation. I didn't see a problem with adding Clemmens because he could have easily been one of Dracula's victims in the next chapter. His death could put Van Helsing on the trail of Dracula.

You did mess up though Found Flix, Anna didn’t turn at the end because she was bitten in the final battle. She was finally succumbing to the infection she had from the very beginning. She tells Clemmens his blood infusions slowed the process but she knew she would change eventually

The easiest way to kill Dracula and lose the least amount of people possible that I could come up with is, wait until daytime, and set the ship on fire and leave via lifeboat.
The only problem with that I can think of is that I don’t know if Dracula would be effected by the sun underwater if he were to jump in and swim.
Can he hold his breath for more than several minutes at a time?
    Can he even swim?
Who knows. Although, if he came up for air, his head would get set on fire.

I also loved the ending. It was so simple but so effective with the motion of reaching towards Clemens’ cut/scratch. The banging of the cane, the disappearing into the night. I loved all that BUT I have to agree that it was a bit of a letdown that he wasn’t revealed to be Dr. Van Helsing in the end. In my mind, he basically is so I find comfort in that thought 🤣

Dr. Van Helsing is white. In the novel he is described so and is also described as DUTCH. So how is clemens going to be Van Helsing? Obviously you are falling for this revisionist bullshit. This movie is woke trash and pays ZERO respect to the original material.
In the ACTUAL novel, everyone hails the Captain as a hero for standing his ground against Dracula and the reason why Dracula does not take his body is because he is holding the cross.
This movie inserted the know-it-all black guy, a mary sue, some kid to make the Captain weaker, and the filipino who dies despite being devout and full of crucifixes. In the original novel, Dracula cannot stand the sight of the crucifix. Here, to push an anti-religious agenda, the crucifix does nothing.
Also clemens has a stupid, out of nowhere speech about his skin color, just in case it wasn't clear that there is an agenda here. A WOKE agenda.
You should go educate yourself on the original novel. If you have any actual respect for other people's work, you'll see how they botched this movie. If you're just another wokester, then I'm sure you'll ignore the fact that revision to classics like this doesn't actually change the past and it just shows how lazy and disrespectful this new woke generation is.

First, I really like this chapter in the book, & I’m glad that someone brought it to the big screen. It fills my heart w/ such joy to see.
Second, blood transfusions were like the hot new science at the time & not truly understood. They had no concept of blood types. There are A LOT of transfusions in the book that happen & there’s no regard for type. (Another faithfully adapted element!😍)
Third, it’s great to see Dracula in his base form. He gets more human-looking & younger when well-fed. It’s reflective of his true nature as a monster that leeches off of others to survive. A parasite. There’s actually a lot of vampire lore in the book that didn’t get brought into pop culture. It could be awesome to see in later adaptations.

I did not know this was shot with practical effects originally. That's really so sad. The main issue I had with the film was the slick NPC-osferatu that stepped right out of a Legacy of Cain game from a lifetime ago. God it looked awful. I wish there were completed shots we could see of the practical effects only so we could really see the difference, but it is hard to believe that it somehow looked worse. Puppets are spooky and wet puppets are down right horrifying. We could have had that, and apparently we did, but they pained over it using the PS2-ify paint tool. They hired an amazing and overwhelmingly competent effects guy and actor, but then someone decides, "nah, it would look better if we replace all of these hand made effects and the performance with computer generated dreck." Whoever made this decision should never be allowed anywhere near a film ever again.

You get just the unbridled predator. That being said though, he does have an intelligence and manipulative streak through. So he still, at his core, feels like Dracula to me.
