  • Moses was a Liberator and Lawgiver for the People of Israel.
He was chosen by God to lead the people of Israel out of slavery in Egypt to the Promised Land of Canaan. God also made a covenant with the People of Israel and gave Moses the Ten Commandments to give to them.
    Moses the Liberator
The Egyptians were worried that the large number of Hebrew (Israelite) slaves would revolt so the Pharaoh ordered all newborn male children to be killed. When Moses was born, his mother placed him in a basket and set him in a river where the Pharaoh’s daughter found and then raised him.
As an adult Moses grew angry about the way his people were treated. He fled Egypt after killing an Egyptian to protect an Israelite. He escaped and later met God in the form of burning bush on a mountain.
God told him to lead his people out of Egypt. With the help of his brother, Aaron, Moses warned the Pharaoh of many plagues that God would inflict on Egypt if the Israelites were not freed.
Eventually, the Pharaoh gave in and let them go free but later he changed his mind and chased them with his army. With the power of God, Moses divided the Red Sea in two so that the people could pass through to safety before the Egyptians pursuing them drowned in the water.
Moses led his people through the desert where they complained about food and water. God provided manna for them to eat and drinking water to spring forth from a rock.
    Moses the Lawgiver
Moses went up Mount Sinai where God gave him the Ten Commandments and many other laws for the people to follow. God made a covenant with the people asking them to follow these commandments.
Moses was never able to enter the Promised Land, though, because even he showed some doubt in God’s power. Instead, he appointed Joshua to lead the people into the Promised Land after his death.

Moses is an aspect of ourselves.
    The mountain represents consciousness.
    Red sea is the emotions.
Egypt is the carnal mind or lower mind of man.
Pharaoh is the ego tyrant in us all.
    Christ never taught catholicism.
