We should have mentioned Canon's iTR, which is similar, but doesn't work with a single AF point. We always use a single AF point when shooting sports. If your style is different, you might be satisfied with it.
Also, on June 23, 2016, Nikon released a D5 firmware update that allows 30 minute recording in 4K mode: downloadcenter.nikonimglib.com...

What a great video thanks Tony & Chelsea. I'd like to move up from my 7d mk2 and this has really helped me. I'm a little nervous to go full frame thereby losing mm but your favourable review of the 5dsr is a great help. Thanks guys!

Very good video, I really like the effort you guys put into them. But I missed one thing and that is the fact that the 1DX II has 21 F8 focus points making it an excellent wild life cam by putting a 2X extender on the 500MM F4 of 600mm F4. And still be able to track.

or you know those pro wildlife photographers use the top of the line bodies because they are capable of withstanding a direct nuclear strike and have enough battery power to shoot a week without charging and still have enough juice to jump start a truck

    • @jeffrydemeyer5433
      @jeffrydemeyer5433 8 лет назад +3

Yes I think it is one of canons first non top of the line bodies that has seen so much care in getting a sturdy body.
Probably the reason why Nikon introduced the d500 and didn't just update the d7xxxx again
But still if I were to be sent in the wilderness and had to pick a camera, I wouldn't even think about picking anything but a 1Dx or Dx, the lines have the reputation and $5000 is getting you a heck of a lot more quality control than some thing you can get for less than $1500

Great Review as always, but one slight point I'd like to make that is often overlooked in deciding which camera you need that suits you and that is hand size & grip. If a camera fits well into your hand & you can hold it and reach buttons comfortably then its going to be simpler to get shots that you want. For me, and it is only a personal thing, I have found the 5D 3 with battery grip attached the best simply because I can hold it at any angle. A friend who is a Nikon user hates the way the Canon is laid out. I know with time you can use to anything but handling a new buy prior to purchase is always a sensible idea before parting with your hard earned cash.

Hi guys!! Thanks so much for this video! I've been considering replacing my aging D2X with something newer and was almost ready to pop for the D5 when I saw your video. Since I'm mostly a bird photographer it makes much more sense to me to stay with the APS-C sensor size. I am looking forward to being able to shoot at higher ISO since the D2X gets pretty noisy above 640 or so. How about yu guys having a meet up here in good ol' CT?

Tony are you using 3D tracking on the Nikons for your BIF pics? I've found 3D tracking to only be accurate for large subjects that fill a large part of the viewfinder. I've had better luck using AF-C and Dynamic 25, 72 or 153 points, with my D500 for fast moving, smaller objects. Many more keepers. Also, are you using release+focus, or focus+release?

That was a great review! The upfront video wth the kickball was fun! Great analysis of nature photography. Any chance you'll do a revue of the EOS-1 and other film cameras? To me film still beats digital in everything except convenience -- which is a big deal. It seems to me that film cameras require the photographer to better understand what is going on to get a good shot. What do you all think?

Great video Tony and Chelsea, it's amazing that DSLRs hasn't changed in 15 years. I can pull out my Canon 10D from 2003 and it look and feel just about the same. Canon and Nikon need to get some younger engineers working on their equipment, because DSLR are like 10 years behind on technology. Now having said that, since i’m not a professional and just for family and some street photography I got the Sony A7-II with the 55mm f/1.8 and I couldn’t be happier, printed as large as 20 X 30 and they look great on the wall. +Tony & Chelsea Northrup press the AF button, go to the third box over, then switch to continues autofocus! I think that's how you access it. I'm leaving work so my camera is in the back of the car, if that's not it, Google it! I just did a quick Google search and their are lots of forms talking about it!

Very clear and helpful information. Thanks for saying how loud the DX1 is. I have many photos of birds looking right in my direction thanks to the loudness of Canon. Not really happy about that. Would rather remain stealth. Interesting about the pixel quality and rather disheartening, as I often have to crop. Looks like I'll be renting the 5Dsr in the future.

Interesting that he mentions that the 1DX doesn't have a C-LOG color profile. Peter McKinnon always shoots in C-LOG and he's usually carrying a 1DX. I'm guessing installing Magic Lantern may add a C-LOG profile?

Tony/Chelsea - Great Video!! Thanks :) Quick question: You advocate the 5DSR. How would it perform for AF of birds in flight? I am planning on buying a used 1DX, but now you've got me thinking 5DSR. I've got enough for one or the other and want to spend smart.

The 5DS-R focusing system is very good, but not as good as the 7D Mk II, D500, or 1DX Mk II. However, it's still very much good enough for flying birds. The slower frame-rate is a bigger influence, however.
I prefer the D500 for flying birds.

They are all good I'm sure, but if you plan on shooting assignments on a daily basis in PJ for example, the one you're going to want is any 1dx or a D3 and up body. Or even a D300, 1Ds or whatever it's called..

Thank you Tony. Nicely presented ... Looking forward for custom functions tutorials for 1DX Mark II (Say, customizing 1DX Mark II)

Thanks guys, great review! Not that I am about to buy any of these two cameras, but it is good to see an objective and insightful comparison of these two flagship products as well as a few very sensible recommendations to buy more appropriate gear for what one may be shooting. I loved the commentary on why pro wildlife photographers shoot the big guys. I guess habits die off very slowly.

You've got a good point with the screens, considering how far technologically small screens in mobile phones have come, camera screens seem to be severely lacking, especially those 2 color green calculator displays atop pro bodies.

I'm confused. Which camera at 3:38 was described as "so loud"?

I'm so conflicted now. I was planning on getting the Canon 1DX II but what I want most is sharpness which means now the Canon 5DS-R would be a better buy. I shoot mainly flying birds and would want more than 5 fps though so then I go back to wanting the Canon 1DX II. I can't decide!

Just base your buying decision on the type of shooting (subject matter) that *_you_* do. I've upgraded from the 2009 *_Canon 1D Mark IV_* to the 2016 *_1Dx Mark II,_* both of which are now superseded by newer gear. It's only a gain of 2 megapixels (18.1mp versus 20.2mp) but I get a faster frame rate, better noise reduction at high ISOs and I also get *_autofocus video_* in the 1Dx Mk II, which I _don't_ have in the older 1D Mk IV. (I'm using the same lenses, but on the 1Dx Mk II they will do AF video, which is handy.) Those features help me, but I mainly shoot news and events. It's happening fast and I don't have all day to get the shot. I don't shoot for fun, only for business and income.

So neither one and go for the D500 instead?

Thanks Tony! it is only after this video that I know what the D500 is for! It's a great option to consider!

I'm not quite sure a full frame is the best choice for wildlife shooting. Almost all shots end up cropped very small so all that extra sensor area is doing is adding size and weight, especially for long lenses. One could perhaps use APS-C lenses and shoot in crop mode, but again why not go with APS-C to start with?
