It’s midnight here on Long Island when you go live but first thing in the morning before work I watch you ! My father was the biggest Star Trek fan, you sound like he did ! God rest his soul
I’m happy that you’re happy Rob. That Star Trek short blew my mind! So the question is why can’t Paramount get there head out if there ass, get these people to produce the next Star Trek film.
I'm 46, Grew up with the reruns of TOS on BBC2 and the original cast films through the 80's I never made it a 3rd of the way into this latest short before tears ran down my face.❤
Yes, I'm 49. The 1980s run is the one that made me a fan. I saw the show in the late 1970s, but I was very little, so I only understood bits and pieces at the time. Spock's Brain particularly stuck in my young memory, perhaps because it was so outlandish! And when the 1980s Star Trek run finished, it was replaced with Mission: Impossible, so I was introduced to another Desilu classic, which I also own in its entirety on Blu-ray!
I'm 52 and yea watched reruns of the original star trek series, going through the originals again on blu ray,and yea tears running watching this short, fantastic 🖖

1:39:30 Man, I was pleasantly SHOCKED at how good the TOS Kirk uniform looked. It wasn’t cheesy, it was BAD-ASS! My first thought on seeing it: “They actually COULD pull off a faithful depiction of the OG aesthetic without alienating the modern audience.” 😮
We know what so many people involved in this think of current Trek, and then Sam Witwer and his expertise and love of Star Wars lore - That scene, beyond how it hit me personally, it does make me wonder if it is a message from the Roddenberry Archive to those currently in control of Trek - "Is this all that I am? Is there nothing more?" Trek in their hands has become a souless, emotionless entity that needs something human. Lots of flash, but no soul. As Spock said, "No meaning. No hope. Jim, No Answers." The OTOY folks in a very subtle, perfectly proper Trek sort of way have said - There is so much more - if only you will write it and not desecrate it.
Hearing that the Star Trek short films made Uncle Rob cries makes me so happy. I am so happy that he got something so great out of it. He deserves it. Love you, Rob!
I don't think it is the 'afterlife'. We see Kirk's body from Picard Season 3 in suspended animation (the sickbay sound effect is running.) We glimpse it in this film. Kirk is restored after Picard season 3 and is requested to visit Saavik and Sorak, because they telepathically know that Spock is alone and dying in the Kelvin Universe. The time soldier sends Kirk to the Kelvin Universe to be with Spock as Spock slips away. As for Kirk, a new day rises and he looks to the future. And we don't know that Gary Mitchell died. He was buried under tons of rock, but he was a godlike being by then. He likely threw aside the rock and rose again after Kirk and the Enterprise left Delta Vega. I never for a minute thought Gary was dead. I'm happy to consider this closure of a chapter and the start of something new. Kirk's badge was returned to him, the Enterprise-D was resurrected. These films capture the spiritual aspect of Star Trek that modern Trek is missing. Modern Trek is only temporal, which is why it's so lacking.
@@dominickberarducci1183 I was actually reminded of Danny Boyle's film Sunshine in that scene with Gary. Maybe he's causing the Hobus star explosion/turning Romulus's sun nova!!
It's great to see you so happy you are by what Otoy does. Really amazing how much love of Trek they pour into their products. Just one Thing on Delta Vega: At the red carpet. Me: But Delta Vega is the planet from "Where No Man Has Gone Before"… Kurtzman: Who gives a frakk.

There are some trippy moments that give the impression of the afterlife but given some of the brief glimpses seen, I also get the feeling that Kirk could have been revived and then delivered to the Kelvin timeline. There is enough going on here to suggest that it wasn't just an afterlife experience. Kirk seeing former versions of himself could just as easily be as simple as experiencing echoes of himself as he travels through time and space to the Kelvin timeline. However people choose to interpret it, what a beautiful piece of work.
Yeah, that was my take on it too. Kirk was revived at Daystrom and sent to be with Spock. Saddest thing is we've had to wait decades until they can use virtual actors and high end computer graphics for this. If someone had had the nouse, we could have had Shatner and Nimoy together for real 25 years ago. I hope OTOY do something with Leonard McCoy next. I'm a Star Trek 'trinity' fan. The media obsess over Kirk and Spock, but for me it was always Kirk, Spock and McCoy. Spock and McCoy shared a very special relationship due their sometimes clashing personalities, but also due to their shared mindmeld. Spock and McCoy literally went through life and death together...
THIS is the biggest point that needs to be made. The inclusion of the Picard season 3 revelation that Kirk’s body had been recovered and the scene from OTOYs Regeneration short showing Spock taking Kirk’s Starfleet insignia make it clear - we are seeing a resurrected Kirk. The presence of Saavik and Spock’s son further clarify this point. This a resurrected Kirk travelling between timelines to recover his friend. He can not have known that Spock was dying before arriving on New Vulcan immediately preceding the events of Star Trek: Beyond. This brings the circularity of Kirk and Spock’s story almost to a conclusion. From Kirk loosing Spock in TWOK to regaining him in TSFS. Spock carried the knowledge of Kirk’s death all those years as shown in the OTOY films. Now a resurrected Kirk - thanks to Spock - must travel across dimensions to save his friend. My feeling is that this story has one more act - Kirk retrieving Spock and bringing him back to the Prime timeline (the final restoration that Star Trek deserves) so Spock can die amongst his friends - his crew.
I swear I don't see your streams post... Glad the real BBC guided me back. You haven't changed... You are THE H.G. Wells character sitting back while the world swirls around.
I love your takes on Star Trek! When I watched Unification, I thought Kirk was given the chance to come out of 'Heaven" to be there with Spock on his deathbed at his last moments. Spock retrieving the comlink from Kirk's grave allowed the discovery alein the ability to go get him, and Kirk putting it on allowed him to be solid(alive) for that time to hold Spock as he passed to the other side! I didnt see it as Spock already in the afterlife. otherwise he would be standing. just my thoughts. I could be wrong thouugh. anybody else see it that way?
Happy birthday rob unpopular opinion but i actually really like star trek generations however the only thing I would change is instead of reintroducing kirk in the 3rd act via the nexus the energy beam instead transports kirk directly to the 24th century era and we have kirk and picard as a lethal weapon style duo for the entirety of the movie basically kirk would be a man out of time ala captain america thrust into a strange new world that he doesn't recognise and the journey he goes on in how he comes to terms with it and finds a new purpose in the process. Plus that kirk and spock reunion in that short was amazing i was so teary eyed loved it
You don't have to hate the movie. I agree with Rob 100% on things not making sense at all, but I enjoyed the movie myself overall. I wasn't blown away & left slightly disappointed. The TNG movies overall got a little dumbed down & more action oriented compared to the show, but they have to appeal to more people & not make as much sense as a TV show that needs more storytelling time over action shots. When I come across it, I still watch it!
I've been known to use the term "glorified B movie" myself as well, Rob. Usually I'll say "big budget B movie." And Gladiator II is up there with some of my favorite Italian peplum films.
Amok Time! Congrats on 9999 Rob! I think the new shorts are an incredible achievement. The lack of dialog makes them feel a little 'weird' to me. Would be interesting to see what they could do with a feature or a series.
I didn't understand the lack of dialogue although you have to remember they weren't using the original lead actors. It would sound weird having Shatner dubbed over Witwer.
@@pferreira1983 And unnecessary. Star Trek movies have made trashing the Enterprise such a regular thing to do that it's become the equivalent of Kenny from South Park. The damage suffered by the ship in TWOK was shocking at the time. The original Enterprise burning up in TSFS was genuinely devastating, accompanied by what is essentially Prokofiev's funeral piece for Juliet in the ballet Romeo and Juliet. We'd never seen an Enterprise irrevocably destroyed before. Generations, as what Rick Berman called 'the first corporate Star Trek film' severely damaged the Enterprise-B and destroyed the Enterprise-D. The second Kelvin film near-as-dammit destroyed its Enterprise, then really did destroy it in the third film. The saddest thing is that there was the opportunity in movies to see so much more of areas of the -D than we ever did in the series. The -D, though, was a ship made for TMP-style films and not the sort of action films Berman and co wanted. I think the -D would have been awesome in First Contact, though.
I liked Generations more than most people but you do make some good points about it Rob, however I love the soundtrack that came with it, I thought it was cool that all the sfx from the movie was on the cd also. I do wish they didn't destroy the Enterprise D, they should have just refit it instead and I mean more than just the bridge refit they did.
Oh - one last question, observation? The overhead shot of Kirk and Spock. It is VERY reminiscent of Star Trek V, in the scene where McCoy is saying goodbye to his own father. Over and over again in that scene, the camera is an overhead shot of McCoy speaking with his dad. Perhaps it is me reading too much into it, but considering the subject and who these two are and bringing back Saavik, Mitchell, others... it would be a small way of bringing DeForest Kelley there too.
Add ‘Star Trek: Generations’ to the list of things pre-internet-me was totally unaware of as disliked by many fans. Also on the list: Return of the Jedi and Ewoks, Attack of the Clones and flying R2, Superman’s Can You Read My Mind and the Earth’s time reversal.
I was surprised at how much I enjoyed Gladiator II. Visually it felt familiar, particularly the arena scenes, above ground and below in the gladiator quarters. It felt similar, and looks great. I have to admit that I fall in with the crowd that says Paul Mescal is good, but he's no Russell Crowe. Sounds trite, but that sums up my feelings about his performance. I really liked his performance but he doesn't have the level of charisma that Crowe had in his respective role. Good movie though. I didn't even mind the digital "monkeys", absurd as they were!! haha Btw, those monkeys??? They were like nightmare monkeys as opposed to real ones, but I went with it!! lol
Keep saying afterlife... But for that don't need any of that extra stuff. Definitely not Yor or the consoles from picard S3. This awesome mico movie is telling me that Colt and Yor and Gary worked together to bring back Kirk and Yor brought him to Kelvin universe to see spock when he died before the events of Beyond. Nothing in canon contradicts this from being just that. I think that kirk touching the follage was him making sure he wasn't in the Nexus. That's how I see it anyway.
Scott is one of the greats. Big fan of him and, of course, his brother, Tony. Top 5 Ridley films. Alien Blade Runner Gladiator Thelma and Louise Black Hawk Down
The nexus ribbon is simply a dimensional portal that perhaps is not meant to be explained. Its effects on us creates the symptoms we apply meaning to but we're just as a fly doesn't get why It's trapped in our car. That's my buy-in to the 'ask.'
I fondly recall seeing Dawn of the Dead at the UA Theater in North Hollywood, and the ticket taker, concession stand staff... all had Zombie makeup on! Had no idea in advance they were going to do that. Very cool. I still have the soundtrack album on vinyl. Goblin!
I initially thought Kirk was in some sort of afterlife, but I think Kirk was actually regenerated (maybe "Regeneration" is referring to this?). Gary Mitchell likely had something to do with Kirk being resurrected. Gary didn't actually die and wanted to do a kindness for his old friend. Yor gives Kirk his insignia, which was likely altered to be a time-dimensional device, as a means to travel to the Kelvinverse. I mean, why have Yor give it to him? They could have had anyone give it to him. Furthermore, Kirk seeing younger versions of himself was likely the process of going back in time, though interdimensionally. Plus, why reference Kirk's remains as seen in Season 3 of Picard? Also, Saavik and Spock's son would still be alive unless he met an untimely death. Heck Saavik would still be alive. I'm going with Kirk being resurrected.
The planet on which the (possibly) revived Kirk meets Saavik and Sorak reminds me of the Shore Leave world where the dead Leonard McCoy was 'repaired'.
Ridley is honestly one of the hardest working filmmakers in this industry. Even if his movies don’t turn out so great. They are still interesting and better than most movies released nowadays
Daystrom Institute bought Kirk back as his body was being preserved and Yor transfered him to the Kelvin timeline to be with Spock at his deathbed... Beautiful
Hi. My first time experiencing your broadcast - pointed here from a friend to hear your observations on Unification. Thank you so much - and I'm happy to learn someone else feels the same way about "modern" Trek. Question - I couldn't help but think that Kirk might have seen his son David if he was seeing other people who had passed away. (and McCoy as someone commented) Thoughts?
I once heard someone say about TIM CURRY/DARKNESS in that movie 'LEGEND' - "When I go to Hell, the Devil better look like this or I would be very disappointed" - what a compliment; James D Watkins
I cried, all the 2 times I watched it. It was an incredibile experience, like to see a miracle. But one question: why do you say Kirk is in the afterlife? The show the images of his body we saw in Picard season 3, so I thought that the idea is that they brought him to life, otherwise Saavik and her son would be in the afterlife as well..
Best part of the concept of unschooling is you get to incentivize your kids to learn. These days youtube alone has more to teach than what we learned in school. I graduated 2000 and most of the time our schools just handed me packets and let us play games in class. Some teachers had Uno cards out as soon as they handed us packets. I learned considerably more from my parents than I ever learned in public education.
These shorts are what Star Trek is. This should have been what we got instead of Nu-Trek. My only criticism is adding elements from that into these shorts. Why not use Q instead of some character most fans do not know?
The only part I got confused about is how could Spock be dead and already in the afterlife, when we see clearly in the first OTOY short that he was alive and looking over the site where Kirk died. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that Spock went back in time to the Kelvin universe and died then, so technically, since that is the past, I guess it means Spock died "first," on some level. Another interpretation is that the time traveling alien that is shown in this film sends Kirk back in time to be with Spock as Spock is on his death bed.
This film treated Kirk just horribly-especially his death (?). It was nice to see these “Next Generation” characters on the big screen-but the story basically makes no sense. It reminds me of seeing our beloved classic “Trek” characters in another story that didn’t really make much sense in “The Search For Spock”.
Hey Rob, absolutely love your show. I was trying to send in a letter but a lot of the links in your channel bio/ video descriptions aren’t working (404 not found). I’d figured I’d let you know :)
I hated Generations when it first came out, I hated the story and I hated how it looked. The TNG Sets looked awful the way they were lit. I just watched the 4K this weekend and I still hate Generations lol. I hate what they did to Kirk. TNG should have stayed out of the films, it should have just ended with All Good Things. I just finished a year long TNG re-watch, I also watched all the documentaries in the set as well. Love how you captured what TNG was all about in the ones you worked on.
50:26 Anytime you quote Fukuyama's End of History... you know it's a serious article. 😂 Generations also disappointed me. Kirk was done dirty. To quote RLM, nothing in that film made sense. But I do say time is the fire in which we burn. Other than that...blah.
Start to finish this resonated with me

I didn't even mind the digital "monkeys", absurd as they were!! haha Btw, those monkeys??? They were like nightmare monkeys as opposed to real ones, but I went with it!! lol
Great stories unite ❤
Keep saying afterlife... But for that don't need any of that extra stuff. Definitely not Yor or the consoles from picard S3. This awesome mico movie is telling me that Colt and Yor and Gary worked together to bring back Kirk and Yor brought him to Kelvin universe to see spock when he died before the events of Beyond. Nothing in canon contradicts this from being just that. I think that kirk touching the follage was him making sure he wasn't in the Nexus. That's how I see it anyway.
Gary Mitchell (and maybe Liz Dehner) and Trelane created the Q Continuum
Scott is one of the greats.
Big fan of him and, of course, his brother, Tony.
Top 5 Ridley films.
Alien
Blade Runner
Gladiator
Thelma and Louise
Black Hawk Down
Not many people can make one great film, let alone 5. Thelma and Louise is fantastic. Black Rain is an overlooked gem.
Favorite line from Death Race 2000: Sylvester Stallone's, "Thank you, Rebels...!" After they took out one of his competitors. 🤣
Fun Fact: Michael Giacchino composed the Paramount fanfare for the 100th Anniversary of the company that is still being used today
Live long and prosper
Black Rain was excellent !!
I have a copy of Free Enterprise on dvd
The nexus ribbon is simply a dimensional portal that perhaps is not meant to be explained. Its effects on us creates the symptoms we apply meaning to but we're just as a fly doesn't get why It's trapped in our car. That's my buy-in to the 'ask.'
Prometheus is gold, Pony Boy....Gold!
I fondly recall seeing Dawn of the Dead at the UA Theater in North Hollywood, and the ticket taker, concession stand staff... all had Zombie makeup on! Had no idea in advance they were going to do that. Very cool. I still have the soundtrack album on vinyl. Goblin!
My first rental.
1:58:51 THIS. EXACTLY.
What a shame Otoy used JJ and Kurtzman "Trek".
Israel; the Jewish people are God's people!
Right on Rob!
I stand with Israel!
Amen
Belief without evidence is intellectually dishonest and a slippery slope
Who is to say the Nexus isn't alive? Perhaps it has an intelligence of it's own.
I like this a lot!
The planet on which the (possibly) revived Kirk meets Saavik and Sorak reminds me of the Shore Leave world where the dead Leonard McCoy was 'repaired'.
Ai trek just in time for episode 1000! 🎉
You have to make a separate video of the unification preview!!!
Ridley is honestly one of the hardest working filmmakers in this industry. Even if his movies don’t turn out so great. They are still interesting and better than most movies released nowadays
30! I can't believe it. Although it's in keeping with the Nexus timey wimey stuff.
Just came home after seeing G2…..IT’S LAUGHABLE AT BEST.
Great memories at the UA 150 Cinema
Daystrom Institute bought Kirk back as his body was being preserved and Yor transfered him to the Kelvin timeline to be with Spock at his deathbed... Beautiful
Hi. My first time experiencing your broadcast - pointed here from a friend to hear your observations on Unification. Thank you so much - and I'm happy to learn someone else feels the same way about "modern" Trek. Question - I couldn't help but think that Kirk might have seen his son David if he was seeing other people who had passed away. (and McCoy as someone commented) Thoughts?
I thought Gladiator II was quite good. I wish the story wasn't so similar to Gladiator 2000. Also The Last Duel is an amazing film!
I once heard someone say about TIM CURRY/DARKNESS in that movie 'LEGEND' - "When I go to Hell, the Devil better look like this or I would be very disappointed" - what a compliment; James D Watkins
Generations was decent up to the last section- good cinema actually
I call Jar Jar's "Star Trek", his Star Wars audition tape.
The Colosseum did have water battles with sharks
You convinced me, I gonna see G II and I come back...
These shorts are what Star Trek is. This should have been what we got instead of Nu-Trek. My only criticism is adding elements from that into these shorts. Why not use Q instead of some character most fans do not know?
was that character planted in Discovery just so otoy could use him?
I don't think so.
I don't think we're done getting shorts yet.
Alien is the best Ridley Scott film.
Gladiator at #2
Blade Runner #3
Kingdom of Heaven #4
Black Rain #5
Black Hawk Down #6
Matchstick Men #7
This film treated Kirk just horribly-especially his death (?).
@Robert MeyerBurnett Ridley Scott movie A Good Year was in France not Italy.
You are slipping.
ROB!!! Is everything ok? Your Twitter is down?
Goonies sabotage his X account? Too much drama over a 80s kids movie 😅
Hey Rob! Did you ever get my email from a few weeks ago? It is titled "2 Veri 2 Similituding"
The reason the ST movies have never been as good as the TV series is that they try to retread old ground, rather than explore something truly new.
It's good to have a cry. It's especially good when you don't film and post it.
Night of the Comet is better than great!!!
If you had Joan Collins show up in that, it would of been wonderful
this show is on at a time UK viewers can't watch live for the next 100 can we get some more Euro friendly slots please ?
50:26 Anytime you quote Fukuyama's End of History... you know it's a serious article. 😂
Generations also disappointed me. Kirk was done dirty. To quote RLM, nothing in that film made sense. But I do say time is the fire in which we burn. Other than that...blah.
