No, Superman doesn’t need to be bulky. The only thing that makes him “super” is rays from our sun. He doesn’t need to be overly muscle bound. The Superman and Lois Superman physique is fine. He’s supposed to be able to blend in with everyone else as Clark

Regarding Gunn's Superman and the whole idea of truth, justice and the American way, I don't think we have anything to worry about with that. It's, seemingly, definitely going to be a part of things based on even just the first, really simple teaser-synopsis that he released for the movie over a year ago. The last line of that original synopsis he released *literally* ended with a line saying Superman is, "...the embodiment of Truth, Justice & the American Way". This was in the brief synopsis that was online since the moment Gunn announced the movie.
Great show Rob! While I love Man of Steel (it's one of my favorite superhero movies ever) I understand that it's not for everyone and that Superman probably needs to be more lighthearted to be a hit like the 70's adaptation was. Therefore, I'm willing to give James Gunn a chance with his movie. One thing you said about MoS on 2:25:50 I disagree though: In my view, there are two reasons why Pa Kent didn't want Clark to try and save him from the tornado: 1) There were people all around and if Clark went in and saved him, his secret for sure would've been over. I think you're underestimating the way people remember this kind of traumatic events, people would've seen him and people would've talked to the press. Now, would the press/the government believed them? That's a different issue but it's a legitimate concern nevertheless. 2) There was no guarantee that Clark would've survived the tornado. As far Pa Kent knew, Clark was strong and could hold his breath underwater, maybe he was fast but that's about it. He had no reason to believe that he was durable/strong enough to withstand the awesome power of a tornado and if that was the case, how could he ask his own son to risk his life for him? Now, if the point is that the scene itself is too dark for a Superman movie, sure I guess, agree to disagree. But the logic of the scene is perfectly sound in my book.
Btw re: the red trunks on Superman: I recently read quotes from Gunn saying that he was against the red trunks too for a long time too. But it was Corenswet that convinced him to add them. He argued (I'm paraphrasing here) that Superman is an alien with immeasurable power, but he wants to be approachable not scary, especially to kids. So he wanted his costume to reflect that, and the red trunks seemed right out of professional wrestling, something that kids liked and was familiar. That argument convinced Gunn to go with the red trunks. (like I said, I was paraphrasing how Gunn described it. I would have quoted Gunn directly, but I can't remember exactly which interview had that info)

The ingredients of a great film were there, unfortunately it didn't quite mesh together. BR was a great Superman, and under better direction, he probably would have killed it.
I loved the DCEU. Even the bad movies. However, I also recognize that the whole thing was very divisive. Some people love anchovies on pizza, most hate it, others acquire the taste for it, and some never even try. James Gunn is making pepperoni pizza. The ingredients are top notch, as the casting is great. If it is best damn pepperoni pizza I ever had, I will go back for more. I just need Lois Lane to cameo in Peacemaker season two. They must take advantage of Mrs. Maisel's assets.
Fortunately for Gunn, he has nearly complete control, while Zack and the DCEU in general had to deal with multiple WB regimes and severe micromanagement.
Gunn's ingredients are "top notch"? He had two flops in the old DCEU which has made part of the new DCU and his first new DCU project is a flop. Gunn's ingredients are past their sell by date.
@@BeholdTheTruth79Two flops? Gunn only wrote and directed one movie in the DCEU. And that movie dropped in the height of a pandemic, and despite its failure at the box office, it was loved by critics and audiences alike.
I thought Zack Snyder went so dark with his version because he thought modern audiences were too cynical for a 1978 type version. If James Gunn does a more innocent and uplifting version, we will see what happens. Certainly an interesting prospect.
I think the only films to capture the real original essence of Superman were the 1978 and 1980 films. There's just something about the innovation of that era of cinema that makes the movies more alive than anything that came afterwards. No disrespect to the films that came after or those who love them.
I remember watching this SupermanReturns documentary years ago, and I distinctly remember the part where one of the producers says about Routh: “I think this is the guy.” It seemed spontaneous and one of the other producers onscreen in that moment seemed taken aback that the first guy was so open about it. I’ve always like Superman Returns but it did need a bit of an action jolt in Act 3.
That commenter who said JL 2 and 3 would have made 1.5bn each 😂😂😂😂 How delusional can you be?! What are they basing that on?? Snyder put Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman on the big screen together for the first time in history, and that couldn't even make a billion. The DCEU box office numbers were getting worse and worse too. There is literally no way those movies would have made anywhere near that. So funny 😂
Given the response to the Snydercut, with everyone agreeing it’s much better than josstice league, a sequel could’ve definitely made well over a billion.
I agree, when I saw Superman and Krypto looking at earth, I think I got what Gunn is going for right there. This won't be particularly dark or angsty. It also won't be the super old fashioned 40's version. I think this will be a very idealized Superman, that harkens to our collective memory of the character, drawing bits from that history but not slavish to any single previous version. This will be the new version. Hopefully he gets that tone right. I'm rooting for Gunn, I think he's fantastic.
I got this feeling that James Gunn is going to work in a backstory that fully explains the reason for the red trunks that people will shed a tear about for years afterwards. For instance: let’s say Clark wears the suit for the first time out in public minus the red trunks and Martha Kent points out that in certain light the fabric is see-through and his little bits are showing, so his mother takes the suit and sews on the red trunks for modest reasons. I want to see Clark blush so hard in embarrassment in this scene.
This isn't just for the superman franchise. Many franchises get this. If a movie isn't exactly what a fanboy had in mind, they want it to fail. I grew up with Reeve as superman. Superman I and II were great as a kid, but didn't age well. Superman returns was too indirect and squandered. Man of steel had a convoluted, dark environment. Fear or worship? Not the making of a hero. I say all this because none of the previous superman movies are ideal, especially not now. I want Gunn to succeed and make a better movie than the previous. I want a new standard for the character.
I know the conclusion jumping crowd isn't gone, but it must be said, not liking James Gunn isn't being loyal to Zack Snyder. He has nothing to do with this. With that out of the way, James Gunn has made me have no confidence, in his Superman movie, and the new DC, in general. Creature Commandos was tolerable, for around 10 minutes, and then it devolved into James Gunn's usual techniques. No respect or knowledge of the characters, joke, nobody characters being pushed to the moon, juvenile humor, violence, because, and every bit he says about Superman, and how short sighted and angry his defenders get, I just don't think Superman Legacy will be good. I HOPE it is. I'm not rooting for him to fail. But starting out with Creature Commandos, I gave it a chance. It was his usual nonsense. He says Superman will be different. I'll believe it when I see. All he can do is low brow, toilet humor, benchwarmers being the main attraction, being as irreverent and violent as he can, and tossing what the fans know out of the window. His transparency is like Wishmaker, of Calypso from Twisted Metal. He technically isn't lying, but the details matter. He says it's not an ensemble movie, and many of his supporters ran with that. That could mean anything. Also, "comic accurate" could mean anything. Accurate to Tom King's garbage revisions, or whomever decided that Alan Scott needed to be picking up male prostitutes, that'll blow up in their faces, too. So, they can say comic accurate, but just as it was with Frank Miller and New 52, in the previous universe, that's not always positive. There's nothing they can say, considering DC's mismanagement.
@@davidblyth6886☝️ Exactly. The question was why wouldn't someone have confidence in the new film. There are reasons. And they are just as valid as people's reasons for thinking it'll be great. And, I even say that I hope that it is good. Either way, dismissing either isn't wise. But sure.
There isn't another movie in 2025 I'm more terrified and at the same time excited for because I want this to be a big success. The weight of a entire cinematic universe could rest on how good this movie is, it might have to be better than good, might have to be great.
There's a channel called FRAME VOYAGER and they have a series called 'ABANDON CAMERAS' and that PANAVISION GENESIS cameras were part of that series along with the VIPER HD cameras. - J.D. Watkins
Maybe it's gonna be great... problem is I (sadly) don't care anymore. So maybe the problem comes from me, but I feel the (lack of) quality of hollywood production these days and the fact we had tons of uninteresting superhero movies has something to do with it...
Thanks for the inside knowledge of Superman Returns. I remember following the production online and getting really hyped for it, and of course I bought the dvd at the time and enjoyed the special features. To be honest, there was very little hype for SR in the general public. It opened around the same time as Pirates 2 which took all the publicity (and money). There just wasn't much interest in a new Superman film at the time. Years later however, there was a lot of excitement for Man of Steel and the film opened well. It tailed off when it failed to really connect with the audience.
Thank you for articulating my feelings about the Snyderverse (though Clark's father death still bothers me) and my hope for this Superman. Hope and joy are so important a Superman movie. I will now think of the Snyderverse as an Elseworld story in a darker world. It really works that way and I will go back and watch this under a new light and feel like I will enjoy it! The fight scenes were all done well and a great soundtrack. I never had a problem with Superman killing Zod ( as far we know Reeve killed him to in the fortress of solitude when he tumbles off the edge) in Man of Steel. I hope everyone gives this new one a chance.
By coincidence I watched Superman Returns last night. Appreciated it an awful lot. Well, I didn't watch it by coincidence, I watched it because you mentioned it on FNT
Agree completely - its not even like they need a great director, they just need a single person or true fan that can read the story and critique it in advance of making the movie as half the time the movies lack soul and have too many stupid nonsensical moments in them. Most fans spot them so why can't the screenplay writers? I wish they'd give Gareth Edwards a chance at a grounded super hero movie. He did a great job with his Monsters movie on a budget and Rogue One was great. Creator was a little bit dubious but you can see his vision, he has that "sensibility". It would be an interesting one as he can certainly tell the story. I think he'd approach it and give it his all as a chance to do more. The team behind Rogue One and Andor are exceptional and if they could attack a Super Hero franchise I think it would be pretty awesome. Not just FX but character development and a grounded feel to it. Fingers crossed for James Gunn's superman but honestly, I'm not looking forward to it based on some of his recent stuff unfortunately. It feels like everything becomes a slapstick mess eventually so hoping he gets his serious hat on and not do another Guardians 3 or Joker 2 on us.
Also, Stacey heldeck, who played Lana Lang, was the only 8 survivor of B every season of Superboy and she wound up going on to a soap opera, which I can't remember the name right now, but she won an Emmy Award for it. Also, she was in a lot of different things like sequest. Dsv, kindred the embrace. And off of the top of my head, the round table and A couple of episodes of true blood
I have a wonderful edit of Superman Returns that restores a lot of those deleted scenes inc the RTK scene, I’d love to see the friends and family cut of the film.
I've enjoyed every new take of the MOS, but being from the generation that grew up with Christopher Reeve, it's hard to go past the Donner films. Each successive Snyder film got worse imo and further away from the Superman I knew. Gunn's take is definitely a return to the hopeful, playful, warm, heroic Superman of the Donner era, and so I'm all in.
If SUPERMAN RETURNS is ever restored, I hope it would include not just deleted footage but also the 4 sequences that were originally shown in 3D. Unseen ever since. As for Cavill not saving his dad, he wasn't Superman yet. He didn't know all he could do yet. He hadnt encountered Jor-el to explain his powers then. He didn't even know he could fly! That came later. Seems like if its not cartoony or omnipotent enough, it must be bad. Shows that people who slam MoS just cant grasp context, instead using their pre-conceptions instead of what was being presented. But we grown-ups understood. And im not wild about going back to kiddie-Superman which most here may prefer. We'll see.

That question applies to any of the cbm characters' iteration fandom, "Why yes, i do think Tyler's Superman is great, but why don't you?!?!" "Why yes, i do think Reeves' Batman is great, but why don't you?!?!?" "Why yes, i do think Dean Cain's Superman is great, but why don't you?!?!?" "Why yes, i do think Snyder's Superman is great, but why don't you?!?!" "Why yes, i do think Garfield's Spiderman is great, but why don't you?!?!?!" "Why yes, i do think Thomas Jane's Punisher is great, but why don't you?!?!?!" "Why yes, i do think Keanu's Constantine is great, but why don't you?!?!?!" And it keeps going, you get the picture.

James Gunn chose the The New 52 version of Superman’s costume. It wasn’t bad but it wasn’t the best either. I’m sure it will look better on film than in the pictures.
You can’t put drinkers clip about authenticity and then say you would shill for a studio! 😂 Anyhoo i am excited for the Superman Trailer I make no apologies, I too am a lifelong Superman Movies fan. Gunn has given me no reasons to doubt he will make a good film. Will it do well? It’s in the lap of the gods now.
Superman will never be a success (again) because there is no convincing us why humanity deserves to be saved. Zach Snyder leaned into that. He didn’t believe human beings had earned a savior.
Are you mad because it’s not going to be a one man show? Superman isn’t Superman unless we see how he motivates the people around him. Gunn’s iteration is designed to bring hope to a pessimistic and cynical world.
How did you come to that conclusion without seeing a single frame of the movie? Because you saw some supporting characters in set photos depicting one single scene from the movie?

I’ve always like Superman Returns but it did need a bit of an action jolt in Act 3.
Really great ep. - thanks!
Rob, if you’re able to share the Red Sun auditions you mentioned, it would be fascinating to see those.
@@steveb9713 definitely not. Both versions of JL were garbage
I'm so excited to see james gunns superman absolutely can't wait
I agree, when I saw Superman and Krypto looking at earth, I think I got what Gunn is going for right there. This won't be particularly dark or angsty. It also won't be the super old fashioned 40's version. I think this will be a very idealized Superman, that harkens to our collective memory of the character, drawing bits from that history but not slavish to any single previous version. This will be the new version. Hopefully he gets that tone right. I'm rooting for Gunn, I think he's fantastic.
Other than the iconic 70's first Superman film, Man of Steel is the BEST Superman movie.
Have you seen Creature Commandos, which is canon? Funny how no one even mentions the show after 3 episodes, written by Gunn. Hardly promising.
I think it's being talked about
because it's an animated show lol
An astonishing 38:04 until he finally gets to the point
😂 😂 😂
Rob is True Noir gonna be in audible someday? Would definitely buy it if it available there
I know the conclusion jumping crowd isn't gone, but it must be said, not liking James Gunn isn't being loyal to Zack Snyder.
Go back to thinking critcals dire channel
@@davidblyth6886☝️ Exactly. The question was why wouldn't someone have confidence in the new film. There are reasons. And they are just as valid as people's reasons for thinking it'll be great. And, I even say that I hope that it is good. Either way, dismissing either isn't wise. But sure.
SMALLVILLE is my all time fav
There isn't another movie in 2025 I'm more terrified and at the same time excited for because I want this to be a big success. The weight of a entire cinematic universe could rest on how good this movie is, it might have to be better than good, might have to be great.
I've been thinking, what is a decent & nice gentleman like Robert doing by hanging out with John Campea. How can Rob stand being there all this time
I totally agree with you rob 👍
There's a channel called FRAME VOYAGER and they have a series called 'ABANDON CAMERAS' and that PANAVISION GENESIS cameras were part of that series along with the VIPER HD cameras. - J.D. Watkins
I hope Rob is right about James Gunn's Superman film. I need it to be more than okay. It needs to be this generation's Superman The Movie (1978).
I just ordered
True noir looking forward to it 🖖
Thank you for articulating my feelings about the Snyderverse (though Clark's father death still bothers me) and my hope for this Superman.
Bc I don’t like Superman. But I like James Gunn, so I’ll give it a shot.
You need to grow back that glorious white beard! Because when you rock that thing you look like the Cyberpunk Santa Claus! Merry Christmas Brah!
And off of the top of my head, the round table and
A couple of episodes of true blood
We'll see.
I get that. But that sequence derailed the film. Jonathan Kent's death should've been handled differently.
Hey, Rob I sadly was not able to attend the 15th live stream I had to work I started my new job at Amazon congrats hope to catch you another time. 🛸🛸PS what do you think about the Drones over the Country & around the World??
Family man Superman has been my favorite so far
I don’t see the problem with the trunks, it’s a suit from krypton and that’s the style. It’s more questionable on Batman, but maybe he would even copy the trunks to show he’s aligned with superman
I own a 1st edition hardcover of James Gunn’s book, The Toy Collector and I own The Specials on Blu Ray (thank you, La La Land Records) 😃
Ppl who said superman kills in man of steel only never watched reeves Superman 2 😂
Did you like the trailer Rob?
Snyder did his thing but they gotta lighten the mood for the next round. Hence Gunn's adaptation.
Superman the Movie was the only time I experienced movie magic.
Really?... 🥺
That question applies to any of the cbm characters' iteration fandom,
"Why yes, i do think Tyler's Superman is great, but why don't you?!?!"
"Why yes, i do think Reeves' Batman is great, but why don't you?!?!?"
"Why yes, i do think Dean Cain's Superman is great, but why don't you?!?!?"
"Why yes, i do think Snyder's Superman is great, but why don't you?!?!"
"Why yes, i do think Garfield's Spiderman is great, but why don't you?!?!?!"
"Why yes, i do think Thomas Jane's Punisher is great, but why don't you?!?!?!"
"Why yes, i do think Keanu's Constantine is great, but why don't you?!?!?!"
And it keeps going, you get the picture.
We're getting a new cinematic classic
Tyler was amazing Superman I hope he gets appreciated
There's no one Superman, there are different types.
Rob, What do you think about the just ended Superman and Lois show. I think it was the best rendition of Superman.
Answer is at 33:30
My wife and I just love the special features for the Lord of the Rings movies.
I’m excited but I can’t get over the start trek the next generation collared uniform suit he’s wearing . Put him in Reeves suit and it would be perfect. Guy has the build, he’s on the magic chicken and broccoli diet, he’s yoked, doesn’t need padding
Scooby Doo Superman in other words.😂😂😂😂😂
Welcome to a new era❤
you mean the new Old era
Superman movies will always underperform because he’s not popular outside the US.
Dynasty was my first concert too
Your social media handles are also missing on the banner.
“ Man of Steel “ was 2013 . Not 2011.
They began the DCEU in 2011 though, with Nolan coming aboard to produce.
God I grew up watching Superman to
Bring back Lois & Clark, don't care about that new stuff.
Dude turn your Eagle 1 Rescue ship around so we face the front.... sorry my OCD. lol
Here from nerdrotic man loved you on the wise old man Roger
James Gunn chose the The New 52 version of Superman’s costume. It wasn’t bad but it wasn’t the best either. I’m sure it will look better on film than in the pictures.
No he didn't he dd a composite of many different suits
You can’t put drinkers clip about authenticity and then say you would shill for a studio! 😂
Anyhoo i am excited for the Superman Trailer I make no apologies, I too am a lifelong Superman Movies fan.
My concern is that Superman seems to be a supporting character in his own movie.
@IndianaJake yeah. Hence the word "seems," genius.
@@jason666king you ever seen a movie before? Pretty much every time there’s a supporting cast hahaha
@IndianaJake a Superman movie with 8-10 other metahumans in it. Reminds me of a mid-season finale of a CW show.
smh at some of the comments read last night. We havn't seen anything yet, no way to judge.
Where can we find Rob’s documentaries, there’s parts of the Superman one on RUclips but I can’t find the X-men ones at all in the internet
You can find them all on the physical media.
@ is there a link to them anywhere to buy physically?
I feel ya about Back to the Future and Field of Dreams
I really don't like a Supes costume with the red underwear outside. It's absolutely ridiculous.
