Also in regard to Signs, one issue I had is that the aliens don't wear any sort of clothing or breathing apparatus. Seems weird that they can just breath our atmosphere and handle the temperature outside on a different planet than their own. And, you know, if you're going to invade a planet with a surface comprised mostly of water which kills you, maybe wear protective gear. What if it started raining all of a sudden? 🤣
The funny thing is that Shymalan's films don't sound that stupid dubbed in other languages. In Spanish, thanks to the voice acting, the lines are not that dumb and it's actually more believable. 😂😂

In “Signs” whether or not the movie is bad, that military guy was 100% an alien because he was trying his best to act like a human based off what he knows and engage in “human small talk. The guy becomes the slightest bit suspicious with his eyes so then the military guy alien starts riding his nuts about his past. There’s a small foreshadowing when they say “you got the record right? “Got the bat at home”. The alien disguises their plan to”check things out and grow” as the military plan. He’s even holding a perhaps empty cup of coffee to look natural when he walks in as if he was drinking it but never sips it. To top it all off… we know they camouflage and perhaps shapeshift.
A 10-minute Steven Universe episode did a much better job with Old's premise that Shyamalan could have ever done. Once again, a cartoon has bested Hollywood.
20:20 - I laughed pretty uncontrollably at this part. The aliens talking among themselves, figuring out how they'll get inside. It would've changed the entire tone of the movie if it were done like that lmao
They aren't Aliens. They are demons. The movie is about faith. You never see the spaceships, only lights in the sky. Birds falling to earth is a sign of the apocalypse. Dogs are turned feral, like Hell hounds. The Middle East (birthplace of Christianity) found an primitive way to defeat the creatures. They display no technology, only a biological weapon. They are defeated by water, drank by a girl with special foresight and who was called an ANGEL at birth (Holy Water). How do you think the population would initially view a demon attack? As an invasion from another planet... but there are SIGNS that it's something else.
Lady in the Water is supposed to be batshit crazy because, at least according to what Shyamalan said, it was a story he told his kid over multiple evenings that he made up piece by piece as he went. That's why I am one of the few people who actually loved this movie. It was just a crazy kids tale come to life lol
Know what's sad about after Earth? It had potential to be a very gripping father-son drama. Think about it, they could have emphasized more that Will Smith's character getting rid of his fear dulled or nearly got rid of his emotions making it harder for him to express himself around his wife and especially towards his son. They could have shown that it's a sacrifice he made to guarantee a better world for his family. Maybe make Jaden Smith's character following in his Father's footsteps as a way to try and bond with his dad but Will Smith does not want his son to make the same sacrifice he did. But then they get caught in the situation where Will Smith's character is incapacitated and he has to teach his son how to get rid of his fear so they can survive, pretty much forcing his own son to make the same sacrifice he did. Have Will Smith's character have a dialog with his son where he shows genuine sadness and fear in his voice towards his son having to get rid of his emotions and explaining how he doesn't want that life for him. I think that could have been an amazing movie, keeping the alien sci-fi stuff as a background to a father-son drama.
Please do a video for "Space Chimps" (2008). My brother and I didn't agree much on movies to watch as kids, but this (for some reason) was one of the few we liked back then. It's not a good movie, but it is nostalgic for me and probably lots of others, since it somehow got a sequel.

I was watching him in college in 2009 along with Spoony… I forget they both existed for like 5 years and I’m glad I found Doug last year again. This is the most NC of NC content that I think Doug has done in years.
I'm convinced that the actors act like this intentionally when in a shymalan production and M. Night just kind of rolls with it. That'd be the biggest twist he's ever done: it's not that he's directing them to be weird, but he just lets them act however they want and all the actors want to blow off steam and be goofy once in a while.
You can even argue that Shyamalan's downfall began already with Unbreakable, at least it was anticipated there. It is an overall excellent movie, but _so f*cking bizarre._ Extremely serious, gloomy and depressing as if it was a script by Ingmar Bergman. And it turns out to be a superhero origin story...
When I watched "The Last Airbender" cartoon, I also was curious, how the fire-lord would look like. But when they finally revealed him, I thought to myself: "Hey, he looks like The Undertaker during his Ministry Of Darkness Era".

Rewatching all the nostaligic critics videos while working on a big side project at home! I appreciate these videos in my life and all the hard work you all put into them, unlike what Shyamalan has done with his movies rofl!
I think the biggest problem with this guy’s movies is he’s trying to outsmart everyone, very often leaving you going, WTF did I just watch? Intelligent movies should leave you feeling smarter, not dumber. George Carlin’s humour was brilliant, but he didn’t talk down to his audience - and even when he did, nobody noticed. You left feeling like you learned something. With these movies, very often you feel like you lost a few brain cells. Directors are supposed to make movies for themselves rather than faceless blobs, but I think there’s too much narcissism in this guy’s movies.
Never saw Signs, but while I'm watching these clips I'm all like "the dog is the one acting weird and no one else?!" I swear that Shyamalan is a robot/AI trying to convert people...
Shyamalan does have a problem with telling more than showing in many cases however even with this he has a tendency to have actually hidden content in all of his movies. But I can easily understand that unfortunately unless you are paying lots of attention to the movies it's very easy to miss the majority of the extra content.
1:16:10 Awwwww! You cut out the best line in the movie! When the pilot asked “And how often are you wrong, sir?”, Cipher responded “My wife would give a very interesting answer to that question.”
Here's a question for will Smith. If you write a scenario to help your son develop his acting career, then make a scenario that gives him ample occasion to show his acting talent. DONT make a movie where you are required not to show various convincing emotions
Doug, you would be surprised what I've watched simply because a Phoenix or a Culkin was in it. Not so much with Wahlbergs. Donnie was great in his brief scene in The Sixth Sense though.
I don't know if you've done a NC about this movie yet, but one that audiences absolutely went gaga over in 1996 was Independence Day. It was right at the height of Jeff Goldblum mania (three years after Jurassic Park, and a year before The Lost World). I recommend watching the Extended Cut, which reinstates a subplot that further develops Randy Quaid's character. Of course, the dumpster fire that's ID: Resurgence retcons a lot of the events of the first movie.
Ah, I see now that by "All the Shyamalan Movies" you meant all the bad ones. 'The Sixth Sense' and 'Stuart Little' being absent from this review-a-thon led me to this conclusion.
My English teacher loved this movie and let the class watch it on the last day of my freshman year. It does have a it's so bad it's good type of feel. IMO.
I watched all morning in anticipation of your critique of my favorite poorly made film, The Lady In The Water. I was in tears, nearly choked on my breakfast, laughed until I lost my breath. If I can still get a signal I want to be watching your channel as the world ends 😂 😂😂😂
To be fair about SIgns, its nothing but a tension filled thriller about the most quiet alien invasion ever. Its a masterpiece, and understated amish thriller with english. You just have to go with it. Not saying that he had any great movies after sixth sense, signs, and the bruce willis thing, but this is one of the goodies.
i remember seeing the last air bender movie in theaters, it was the first time a movie disappointed me to the point of being upset. and saying "so just don't watch it and it won't ruin the show" doesn't work, the failure of the movie was one of the reasons we didn't get a season 4
So the twist in "Signs" is he stole the aliens weakness from "Alien Nation" but made even more of a problem for them. Not just saltwater but all water is like acid to them.
No, what he did was take War of the Worlds and find a different issue than the common flue :-) And just like the flue to marthians, who's to say there couldn't be life allergic to water? It grew on a planet with a very different set of elements. I'd say the bigger problem is them surviving our atmosphere without biosuits. A Star Trek away-mission blunder, if you will. There is humidity in our atmosphere which should make them irritated at least? Their planet would probably have a more gaseous or liquid component not possible on Earth.
@@csgraffiti Nah. Alien invasion have become so common place in story and film you can't throw a rock without hitting one. If the story had big ships and tech crushing the military, then it rained and the invaders all melted you could make this argument but it was the story of one family. What was taken and exacerbated was the water is like acid concept and perhaps the aliens are dump and have no foresight trope.
A nice compilation of the Shyamalan reviews. Signs is considered a classic, but the acting is awkward, and the aliens are dumb. The Last Airbender is one of the worst adaptations of all time, and The Happening is basically Shyamalan trying to be Stephen King. Lady in the Water can be summed up by one word: NARF! There's one review missing, though: Devil. The episode is hilarious, but it's over 40 minutes long, and I suppose this compilation is long enough as it is.
I'm French and I've seen every Shyamalan movies in theatres with Friends, during those events where the price of the ticket is lower at 1 euro after the first ticket bought full Price, and I am so thankful for Lady in the Water and the Happening.... My favorite parts were the jump scares on the sprinklers when the demon dog thingy is Always Seen coming a mile away and the cereal kid, For the Happening, it's the super serious fight with no emotion when we learn that the relationship issue is due to Zoé Deschanel eating a tiramisu with some guy named Joey, Couldn't tell if the issue was with the tiramisu or the random dude.. I remember Signs fondly because I Saw it with my now deceased dad, and we honestly thought it was a comedy and had a good time with it.. He loved unbreakable, I wish he got the chance to see Split, he would have been like a child at the end The village I was just pissed because I thought it was a horror movie, it was advertised as one but nope, yet, there is one scene I loved, when the blind girl stays at the door for her lover, hand out the door when the Fake Monsters arrive, I thought that was Moving and chilling ... Glass had too much potential to be that half assed and The Visit I really liked Devil and After Earth I had no Idea were MNS's work, but crazy toast Guy was Amazing, the other one I fell asleep halfway through ... I still love him though, he is amazing, So are your reviews !
I'm glad "OLD" is the last review on this compilation, cus seeing Gael Garcia just made me wanna go watch ''Werewolf by Night'' for the 5th time. Even with a bad script, there's just something wholesome about him =) Whereas OLD was pretty 'meh'... WBN is brilliant.

I know that you're not going to believe me, but I genuinely and unironically love Lady in the Water. I think it is Shyamalan's best movie only narrowly beating out The 3ixth Sense. I own the movie on DVD, Blueray, and there was a book produced, that I also own. I think everything about the story and actor selection is mastery of the medium.

If the Ursa can smell fear, Cypher could feel every other emotion and still be a character.
Near the climax he could finally express fear for his son's life, potentially putting himself at risk.

In After Earth, i thought CyPhEr rAgE broke both legs, but he stands up to salute Jayden like he didn't break anything]
Just quit smoking. I'm going to sit here and watch this entire thing. Thanks.
At ~2:20:00 do not accuse us of not being stoned, we are quite stoned over here, thank you.
God, these reviews are still amazing. It elevates the movies to the actual comedies they should have been.
Love the Shyamalan reviews
"Will we already want to be you" "we're jealous enough" Those lines aged like milk
Yes! Finally! The video I've been waiting for years for this video. Thank you :D
Woah this is weird. I googled M Night Shaymalan and why he wore an Amon Mask…. Found out that’s a NC exclusive
Imagine if Shyamalan got hold of the transformers franchise
How dare you put that idea out in the universe like words don’t have power? 😂
Would be groovy
The Signs NC review is absolutely one of my favourites to this day 😆
Rewatching all the nostaligic critics videos while working on a big side project at home! I appreciate these videos in my life and all the hard work you all put into them, unlike what Shyamalan has done with his movies rofl!
Why am I just now realizing that two of the Roy sons from Succession were in The Happening.
I hear Succession is a really good show
M night was heavily involved as writer/asst director in "She's all That"
I think the biggest problem with this guy’s movies is he’s trying to outsmart everyone, very often leaving you going, WTF did I just watch? Intelligent movies should leave you feeling smarter, not dumber. George Carlin’s humour was brilliant, but he didn’t talk down to his audience - and even when he did, nobody noticed. You left feeling like you learned something. With these movies, very often you feel like you lost a few brain cells. Directors are supposed to make movies for themselves rather than faceless blobs, but I think there’s too much narcissism in this guy’s movies.
Shyamalan marathon? This pleases me
God I love his Signs review, so damn funny. Probably one of the all time best NC episodes
too bad he was wrong
The general in Signs: "Don't mind me... I'm practicing for a Twilight Zone episode..." in a movie that is basically a Twilight Zone episode. *laughs*
poor paul giamatti. one of the most underrated actors to live and he had to live through lady in the water.
I Love Lady In The Water, Signs, And The Village. My Favorites.
Never saw Signs, but while I'm watching these clips I'm all like "the dog is the one acting weird and no one else?!"
I swear that Shyamalan is a robot/AI trying to convert people...
Hey I know technically he didn't direct it but I would of love to see the devil review in here cause he helped write it but fun to watch none the less
Shyamalan does have a problem with telling more than showing in many cases however even with this he has a tendency to have actually hidden content in all of his movies. But I can easily understand that unfortunately unless you are paying lots of attention to the movies it's very easy to miss the majority of the extra content.
1:16:10
Awwwww! You cut out the best line in the movie! When the pilot asked “And how often are you wrong, sir?”, Cipher responded “My wife would give a very interesting answer to that question.”
The Deschanel shitting her pants bit had me in stitches 😂
If you want to see how you can make awkward and ambivalent dialogue work as caring and endearing
look to Wes Anderson,
1:18:40 would result in nothing but the kid being in a state of constant terror and emotionally destroyed
Here's a question for will Smith. If you write a scenario to help your son develop his acting career, then make a scenario that gives him ample occasion to show his acting talent. DONT make a movie where you are required not to show various convincing emotions
Hey Doug, this was really really good. I enjoyed it.
He has, in the olden days of drawn thumbnails
He's done both!
That woman in Signs can speak really well for someone who just had like 60% of their body flat stanley'd by a car
No more sex!
Ah, I see now that by "All the Shyamalan Movies" you meant all the bad ones. 'The Sixth Sense' and 'Stuart Little' being absent from this review-a-thon led me to this conclusion.
lol that last airbender song was amazing.
2:31:11 brilliant line: "You do realize we hear the lines you're writing?"
i remember seeing the last air bender movie in theaters, it was the first time a movie disappointed me to the point of being upset. and saying "so just don't watch it and it won't ruin the show" doesn't work, the failure of the movie was one of the reasons we didn't get a season 4
What was taken and exacerbated was the water is like acid concept and perhaps the aliens are dump and have no foresight trope.
nah, he made aliens who actually didn't want to invade earth. do you really believe what dumbass rednecks say all the time?
A nice compilation of the Shyamalan reviews. Signs is considered a classic, but the acting is awkward, and the aliens are dumb. The Last Airbender is one of the worst adaptations of all time, and The Happening is basically Shyamalan trying to be Stephen King. Lady in the Water can be summed up by one word: NARF! There's one review missing, though: Devil. The episode is hilarious, but it's over 40 minutes long, and I suppose this compilation is long enough as it is.
Du-gah!
Freaking love that Signs review.
I'm French and I've seen every Shyamalan movies in theatres with Friends, during those events where the price of the ticket is lower at 1 euro after the first ticket bought full Price, and I am so thankful for Lady in the Water and the Happening....
My favorite parts were the jump scares on the sprinklers when the demon dog thingy is Always Seen coming a mile away and the cereal kid,
For the Happening, it's the super serious fight with no emotion when we learn that the relationship issue is due to Zoé Deschanel eating a tiramisu with some guy named Joey,
Couldn't tell if the issue was with the tiramisu or the random dude..
I remember Signs fondly because I Saw it with my now deceased dad, and we honestly thought it was a comedy and had a good time with it..
He loved unbreakable, I wish he got the chance to see Split, he would have been like a child at the end
The village I was just pissed because I thought it was a horror movie, it was advertised as one but nope, yet, there is one scene I loved, when the blind girl stays at the door for her lover, hand out the door when the Fake Monsters arrive, I thought that was Moving and chilling ...
Glass had too much potential to be that half assed and The Visit I really liked
Devil and After Earth I had no Idea were MNS's work, but crazy toast Guy was Amazing, the other one I fell asleep halfway through ...
I still love him though, he is amazing,
So are your reviews !
I'm glad "OLD" is the last review on this compilation, cus seeing Gael Garcia just made me wanna go watch ''Werewolf by Night'' for the 5th time. Even with a bad script, there's just something wholesome about him =)
Whereas OLD was pretty 'meh'... WBN is brilliant.
OH MY GOD I JUST REALISED THAT ITS HIM!
@@CelestialxTrash gael garcia is like a secret ingredient, you may not notice he's there at first, but when you DO... You can't think of anything else 🤭💙
@@aboxinspace that's fair
"Mid-Sized Sedan" is truly the funniest rapper name anyone could have. How can anyone say that name with a straight face?!
Love you Doug, cant wait to sed you in Dublin!
See ya there!
@@ChannelAwesome I haven’t seen signs since one of my teachers played it for Halloween in grade school
I needed this comp, these are some of my favorite vids
I know that you're not going to believe me, but I genuinely and unironically love Lady in the Water. I think it is Shyamalan's best movie only narrowly beating out The 3ixth Sense. I own the movie on DVD, Blueray, and there was a book produced, that I also own. I think everything about the story and actor selection is mastery of the medium.
A surprise video but a welcome one.
Wow I could close my eyes and actually see Trevor'GTAV'Phillips at 6:15 😂
I need this rereleased with it having actually having all the NC Shyamalan reviews.
