I'm lucky enough to own both OLED and Mini-LED displays, and I almost always prefer the brightness of a well-tuned Mini-LED HDR picture. I wish they would make glossy Mini-LEDS!

I have used the pg32uqx for two yrs recently changed to the pg32ucdm and I can’t be happier. It’s so much smoother there is zero white smear that’s the issue with the uqx is white smear and the bloom but the oled has zero of either yes it’s not as bright but it’s so much cleaner looking image.
@@stagm3 it’s fantastic to say the leased.set to 1000 nits it’s amazing. Line i said before the uqx is ok it’s just super old tech the panel is so slow it’s bad and has white smear. Look at some reviews of the uqx the panel is to slow and I notice white smear on like candles in d4 even or some other white items being displayed drives me crazy and the bloom is also a bad thing.

This is the best LCD I've ever seen. It's remarkable what Asus achieved with this. Colour accuracy, motion, brightness, shadow quality, blooming control are all fantastic. I'm extremely picky and I honestly would never buy another LCD ever again, but this one is special. You should compare it with a Panasonic OLED TV or a Sony OLED TV. I highly doubt this compares to any other LCD.
This is what I was saying since months and that I recently confirmed by buying the new MSI 240Hz OLED for comparison with my Acer X32 miniled. I prefer the X32 miniled hands down.

Great Video. I recently sold my PG32UQX for the new PG32UCDM OLED display. While there are some things I do miss about it, the PG32UCDM is better in almost every way. Motion Clarity, 240hz refresh rate, 1000 nits peak is actually pretty bright when you have zero blooming and an amazing contrast in dark scenes. Full screen brightness, especially in daytime scenes is where the PG32UQX really shines and blows OLED out of the water.
No problem. I think OLED is a great step up from your average IPS/VA budget gaming monitor and has a place but its being put on a pedestal by most reviewers without really considering its short comings.
@@verttisyrjala2897Response time compared to good LCD panels is inconceivable by the naked eye. While you're correct on motion clarity that only applies to high refresh rate, for any singleplayer game below 120fps an LCD with strobing will provide better results.
Why haven't I heard any of this from anyone else? Have I just missed all those videos? I've seen like a hundred reviews over the past six months or so all raving about how great OLED is. Were they all lying?
OLED is great, just not the handicapped desktop monitor versions we currently have available to us. Also, I wouldn't say they're lying, they are just incentivized to say mostly great things about OLED since they are provided the products for review. These are just my own opinions in the video, others of course feel differently.
Yes! My Samsung s90C TV is very bright, but my ultrawide monitor g8 oled gets dark and changes brightness all the time. I used to have an asus pg27uq and I still miss it, it was just so beautiful
Yes, OLED has tons of fanboys that refuse to acknowledge any flaws of the technology. That combined with people who've only ever used shitty office monitors up until their shiny new toy makes up the vast majority of those takes. At the end of the day it depends on your use case, neither is objectively better than the other.

Even with the budget for a 1000€ OLED, I decided to buy a cheap miniLED monitor, the KOORUI GN10. I really recommend it to everyone, it's HDR 1000 and VA, you'll have deep blacks and nice highlights. It goes perfectly with my PS5.
So glad to see a video saying what I've been expressing to everyone since the "Hype" of OLED's in the monitor space. I rock a PG32UQX and before that had the Asus 27 PG27UQ (It's older brother)... nothing touches a super high end mini led for HDR like these types of monitors. It's not even close. And the PG32UQX had near OLED blacks due its increased zone count over the older brother. THE only way OLED can compete with these high end Mini-LED monitors is for some companies to copy what Apple just came out a week ago with their "Tadem-OLED" (Basically Stacked OLED) and that's not even feasible for a gaming display, as the overhead of the GPU needing to run this stacked kind of display in perfect sync with each other would likely bring issues for VRR technologies and bandwidth/latency issues. It's sad that the entire industry is focusing on OLED's (Probably bc they are cheaper to produce) opposed to offering even more high end mini-led monitor options.
The PG32UQX ansi contrast ratio isn't all that great but actual content isn't checkboard pattern outside of like star fields so real world contrast is pretty good. Good enough that I also don't think the perceived difference is that big. Like I said in the video, its a marginal improvement while the difference in colors and brightness is a far more significant which is why I accept the PG32UQX's bloom as a trade off. The monitors biggest weakness is pixel response (especially white/light colors). If they would release a 5000+ zone successor with a faster panel and bumped the refresh rate to like 160 or 180hz, I don't think I'd need anything else until micro led comes to the PC monitor space. I think we are a few GPU generations away from 4K/240 being achievable especially with so many future games being UE5 titles which I can't even break 70-90FPS in with a 4090 right now. Of course this doesn't apply to older titles or esports stuff but like I mentioned, I buy a high quality display to play games with high quality graphics.
Actually qd oled does use stacked layers. There are 3 layers of the blue emitter and many believe there is a green pholed layer as well. Its practically the same approach.
Solid video as ima make a few points 1. OLEDS in general are dimmer which you miss out alot of the brightness and as i watched the video in some areas the detail looks a tad bit cleaner but the brightness loss / OLED dim is to huge. I had a LG CX before and i use to look at it kinda sideways as it was dim as well. The contrast is there for sure but with that you lose it with how dim the panel is so its a + and - effect 2. You compared a 1,900$ Mini led to a 1,299 QD-OLED. I think this would been more apples to apples if you would of did the QD-OLED vs Samsung neo G7/G8. Alot of people not spending 2k on a monitor as well so this would of been in the ball park and a fair comparison 3. The content when playing games was being done on PC or console with HDR ON or OFF? Other then that, Prob one of the best videos to show the difference between a QD-OLED and MINI LED. Mini LED is much richer and brighter and you dont lose much its like 95% of the oled and you dont have to worry about burn in / Dimming and Auto Static Brightness Limiter

This video wasn't really intended to be apples to apples, its to demonstrate the potential of mini-led and that it still has a place in todays market where there is an OLED frenzy. It's also to show that OLED still has a long way to go in my opinion before it really shines in HDR. Of course for most, these OLED's are awesome monitors, I just tend to scrutinize far more than the average joe. This was all done on PC, just no where near enough flexibility on console. Also like I said, I had to reduce the PG32UQX's brightness because it gets so bright (1700nits from 1-50% window) that it makes the OLED look like I have it at 10% brightness. EDIT: I'm in the process of getting a hold of a Neo G8 to compare to both the PG32UQX and G8 OLED.

@@cameron2319 wise choice. Oled is extremely dim so on 1 hand you get the contrast but on the other it’s dim so it’s a + - effect which is what had to let go a lg cx. It’s had the contrast but the dimming was off

Gaming on mini led turned out to be far better than I thought, it really pulls you into the scene giving an immersive quality no other screens give. Any lighting effects it totally brings it alive in a game, the sun, special effects, street lights, or even just watching sdr content like star wars a light saber actually glows like crazy it's the coolest thing ever. For me the spot dynamic lighting effect alone is the biggest selling point it's just so cool and should be seen as a whole other attribute or technology. I keep hearing people not define it as such but just a brighter screen for better hdr, when in reality the spot lighting even on just sdr content is more of a selling point than better hdr since most things are sdr.
One thing nobody seems to comment on is Samsung's inability to display orange correctly, its comes off as a pinkish red like at 6:17. I have both a QLED and an LG OLED and the issue is clear as day when comparing those too.
All the OLED hype online pushed me to buy an LG C2 last year and while it is a huge upgrade over my 1440p LCD monitor from 2018, I really do regret buying it after over a year of using it so far. I know now that if I would've waited out a bit longer or did more research at that time, I would've ended up getting a QD-OLED or a high-end mini led TV and been much happier. Not like I had to break the bank or anything to get the C2 but I definitely should've done more research instead of buying into the hype from the massive online LG fanbase. The C2's mirror-like coating and starfield-like scenes in HDR were the only things that really wow'd my friends and family, but outside of that it didn't look that impressive at all especially for anime and sports which is what we mostly watch.

yea its bullshit. The c series has been trash ever since the cx imo, besides c4, which is still a woled. qd-oled is simply superior to woled. Grab an s95b if you ever see a good deal and unlock its brightness in the service menu to 1500 nits. It looks so fucking good

Bit too dim for me tho as it is the Same brightness as that Samsung Odyssey. But in Canada n EU they have S92C which is sweet spot for pricing, for 1300nits without paying S95C price. Samsung is skechy tho, anyone buy Samsung TV needs to--NOT ever connect to Internet. They will FORCE update even it has set to “disable auto update”. N tv will slow down, n gets dimmer each time. Needs to get external streaming device . Mini LED or QD-OLED from Samsung can not escape it. I wonder if they do that to the --PC screen now, shit i never thought of that. Oh okay u get it. I just read the rest of ur comment lol. Yea Samsung is awful nerfing the brightness of the s95b 30% among other things. I just use my pc to stream. I think the problem is when the prompt pops up asking either to “update now” or “update later” people think “update later” means “do not update for now” essentially, as they should, but it really means the update is just going to occur later on and u will not get the same notification.
I can't believe it's been 3 years since I bought my mini led TV which is 1800 nits and there are still almost no options in the monitor market that are similar. All we get is the same e-waste 200 nit oled panel announced from every manufacturer every year. The motion improvement is not worth the other drawbacks of oled. After 7 months of research and returning a g9 I finally settled on the TCL 34R83Q, getting it next week, hope it's good enough. Should be around the same HDR performance as this Asus, if the backlight is as fast. The TCL is still smaller and lower res than what I would want, but the monitor market is so bad and it's impossible to follow product cycles like with TVs. All you know is "maybe" something might come out in a couple of years and then it gets cancelled...

N the WOLED since the W means white light constantly blended in RGB to boost “brightness” (or lack of ) , not only they r Dim , also Low color on d dark grey . Just flat ! 😮 The TV market has flipped upside down too. Hisense U8N , TCL Q851 looks better than LG G4 , since they r bright n with Color Density/Volume Match with QD-OLED. 😮 it piss a lot of ppl off becusee they buy WOLED 😮to feel pristege , now LED look so much better . Lots ppl in denial 😮. My U8G 2021 65” makes my 2023 -$1100 iPad-Pro with M2 Chip look like $300 junk 😮 . Its insane
A decent middle ground is the LG C4 48" or the LG C4 42". It will never be as bright as mini led, but I prefer it over blooming. The infinite contrast of OLED is preferable IMO. This is coming from my experience owning the Samsung G9 57" Ultrawide. The only way I would do MINI LED again is if they can do a better blooming algorithm and use a better panel for better contrast. I don't think IPS black is there yet.
Dude C4 so dim black crushing ! I saw Hisense ADS-pro full gloss 75” U8K , n this year U8N already incky black . U see so much more . Because C2 C3 A80L all sever low Color volume. Dim images can look grey tinted . Lack of pop .

I actually think the inverse is true in the TV market. Most companies have heavily banked on OLED and left LCD to stagnate. OLED TV's large window size brightness remains mediocre like the monitors, but 25% window size and below they are 2-4x brighter which makes a huge difference in perceived HDR impact. For most people, OLED TV's provide a fantastic viewing experience with little reason to move back to a LCD based model outside of very specific circumstances like an environment with limited ambient light control or those who are news network obsessed. Thankfully Sony has put R&D back into LCD in 2024 and along with TCL are really leading the charge toward making mini led TV's more competitive. I personally believe that these current OLED's have always been a stop gap solution and I'm relieved to see Sony pushing the envelope. In the future I think their approach of a LCD based flagships with OLED models filling their mid tier lineup will become the norm mainly because OLED isn't a jack of all trades and still can't adequately present all HDR content (bright stuff) while mini led handles the bright stuff with ease and is capable of doing dark stuff well enough that the difference doesn't matter to most. What I personally dislike is Samsung's approach to mini led based TV's and monitors where the local dimming tries so hard to suppress bloom in an attempt to compete with OLED contrast that it destroys picture quality. Let LCD flex where its best (brightness) instead of trying to strangle it into something it's not. I personally leave VRR off on my Alienware 34DW because of the flickering, none the less the monitor is still AMAZING, only upgrade from this would be ROG's 240hz 34 or 39" WOLED
I have the ViewSonic XG321UG which is basically the same monitor as the PG32UQX as it uses exact the same panel from AU Optronics and I agree with your observations. Which local dimming setting do you use in HDR? I use the balanced one, where small highlights are a bit brighter and transition of the zones is less aggressive. In SDR I can use the faster setting.
I think there is a difference between the two when it comes to local dimming. The newer revisions of the PG32UQX it makes no sense to use anything but the level 3 or fastest setting which behaves some where between the XG321UG's balanced and fastest setting.
Situation in EU is horrible. We can either choose Samsung Odyssey Neo G7, Neo G8 or Neo G9, or choose a 576 local dimming zones 4K monitor that costs as much or more than the Neo G7 and G8, more than a 1440p OLED. Granted it's 4K at least at 27 inch with good PPI. What 576 zones mini-LED would you recommend the most? Have you tested them? It's impossible to get 1152 zones IPS miniLED with true HDR 1000+ here, which is what I would've liked. I had tried the Acer XV275K P3 but it's local dimming solution is horrible. It's bright for sure but in the majority of scenes the blooming is readily visible and very intense.
Innocn 27M2V is not available in EU? I can't recommend any of the 576 zone monitors available today. They are all plagued with poor local dimming algorithms and I don't personally think the zone count is acceptable now a days. I actually think the 384 zone PG27UQ and X27 from almost 6 years ago perform better than these new 576 zone monitors. There is the Asus PG32UQXR but I haven't tested it myself. I'm interested in getting one in the future to test but I've only heard bad things about the overdrive tuning.

Yeah its a regression from its 3 year old predecessor in every way other than pixel response. I personally don't understand why it exists to be honest. It's MSRP is $1299 but should be like $899 or less.

This is what I've been saying for years. OLED is awesome, but the brightness is worlds different. The brightest OLEDs only really get to 500-700 nits in a real game scene, thanks to ABL curves (LCDs also have ABL curves but they're far less aggressive). I have an OLED phone that does 1600 nits of brightness sustained across the whole screen, which is 400 nits brighter than my PG32UQX can sustain across the whole screen! And while it looks amazing, the simple truth is I can't game on that phone, and OLED TVs/monitors can only do 200 nits fullscreen. The tech just isn't the perfect thing everyone always claims, and it's so frustrating hearing everyone talk about how incredible the barely HDR picture of an OLED is, whilst simultaneously dunking on competing tech that's just as flawed but better looking. We really need MicroLED to just kill both sides so we can move on past this dumb debate and appreciate real HDR together. Edit: 7:43 For what it's worth, I have a PG259QN (1st gen 360hz IPS with mediocre response times for the given refresh rate) and I greatly prefer my PG32UQX at 120hz even in competitive titles where I DO get 360hz, purely for the HDR picture. The brightness and color just reveal targets so easily and keep enemies visible even in pixel response blur. Edit: 9:52 Asus and other Mini-LED manufacturers source their panels from AU Optronics, so we're waiting for them to make better panels. And Samsung doesn't know how to make something with adequate cooling so their Mini-LEDs have TONS of ABL, oh and they completely lied about the peak brightness of their Mini-LED displays... 2000 nits? Try 1200 peak 10% and 400 sustained 100%. Compared to the PG32UQX which does 1600 sustained 10% and 1200 sustained 100%. Final Edit: Oh yeah, and companies like Hisense have managed to get much better zone density, like 3x that of the PG32UQX, as well as 10,000 nits peak brightness in some of the newer stuff. So these advancements will trickle down. I'd expect gen 3 Mini-LED to have 3000 nits of brightness, and 2000+ zones at the high end. AUO are making a 4608 zone 32 inch panel this year.
@@edragyz8596 I dunno, it seems like the monitors with good specs and reasonable price are always "a year away". For example the Acer X32Q FS got some announcement press in mid/late 2023 but now 6+ months later it still can't be bought in Americas (at least not that I've seen. People in China/Taiwan and maybe Australia can get them?) I guess one positive is the PG32UQX is selling around 1800USD now instead of 3000.
My desk monitor is a QN90C Samsung Miniled tv. While it has black smearing and viewing angles aren't ideal while sitting close to it. It's advantage is that it can play HDR content throughout the whole day vs My A80j OLED who outshines it at night as a bed TV. Honestly I'm excited that Sony has decided to make their flagships Miniled instead. I'd love for them to release a 43 inch or other monitors. Their color accuracy, sharpness upscaling, and motion are just a step above the other brands. Well worth the premium. Miniled is coming!
How close is the Innocn 32MV2 to this Asus mini LED? I think you mentioned in the video that you've tried it before. Also, have you tried any of the newer LG C3 or C4 42 inch to compare with these? I believe the 42 inch TV Oled have have better brightness at larger window sizes such as 10% window.
The Innocn in my opinion doesn't really come close. The local dimming is a total mess in comparison. It will use way more zones then necessary to brighten a highlight so bloom is far more noticeable. On paper the Innocn is faster in terms of pixel response overall but in actual use I found it more blurry in motion. Maybe the lack of adaptive overdrive is what contributes to that. Yes I use to daily drive a LG C2 42. They are brighter at 10% but significantly more dim at 50% and above which means sometimes the LG's can be brighter and other times dimmer.

Even with its problems I prefer OLED but I also believe OLED as a technology will likely be beat by micro led. The problems most mini LEDs have are absolutely garish though, a good mini led like this one is also more expensive than some OLEDs. I
Color brightness seems to be a huge issue with oled (even with qd-oled good color volume). colors just look muddy, lack of punchiness and contrast between different colors.
Yes the OLED can look completely lifeless and flat and its not a infrequent thing. Literally 60% of the content I consume results in ABL destroying the resulting image due to how dim it gets.

Yeah I keep hearing about poor performance but it has received a couple firmware updates that supposedly address its local dimming. LG was suppose to arrive today but looks like it won't come until Monday. I personally don't think its worth comparing to the Neo G8 (I'd rather compare it to the PG32UQX) but let me see first how it performs.
I couldnt agree more. I bought the corsair flex oled and was shocked at how bad it was for most of my needs. Maybe for gaming and media consumption of dark scenes its great but overall its not good. I "upgraded" to a $400 no brand hdr1000 mini led and I love it so much more.
1:40 Except it doesn't work well for Resident Evil because the game clips the highlights at the configured luminance after rendering them at full brightness. This means the further from max game brightness you go, the less highlight details you get, looks awful unless you set a tonemapping curve.
This Samsung supports HGIG and tonemaps down to its luminance capability. There is a noticeable difference in highlight detail between HGIG off and on. Off just over brightens and loses details while on is dimmer but retains the detail.
I agree with you that Mini-LED has a place in the market absolutely, but what is mini-LED better at? As far as I can tell the main difference is brightness and text clarity. I don’t know if those two factors alone are enough
but the pixel response time on Oled is waaay faster without even needing overdrive , also the input lag on IPS and VA with HDR is too damn high, its basiclly trash specially in e sports games, and lastly there isn"t a single decent 27 qhd mini led moniter on the market (all of them r 4k 32inch) aside from the cooler master one but its 90% o the time of stock !!!
I never understood the fetish for more brightness? I mean I am using like 75 brightness now and if more I would feel like I am burning my retinas. OLED for me has never been too dimm. But with that said, HDR in Windows overall doesn't feel good yet for a set-and-forget usage. It's still buggy and sometimes not switch automatic or working at all for some games. I am gonna stick with my LG 32GQ950 that I know isn't even a Mini-LED but still got a very good picture imo. It's Nano IPS so very fast still and comes with a ATQ Polarizer that helps removing any IPS Glow (mine got none!) that you are used to. Still no deep OLED Blacks but I think I can wait bit more since burn-in is still also a factor if you're gonna use the monitor for anything else then just gaming and movies. I want Micro-LED now!
4:54 Flicker is due to PWM. Well, it's caused because the way VRR works on OLED is by recalculating the brightness from the previous frame, it's not the same as LCD. Most modern LCD displays use DC for brightness dimming, I say most because even LCD panels can use PWM. LTT did a video on the ROG Zephyrus G14/G16 that explains it, where in the process of getting a lower power VRR solution they kinda elegantly solve VRR flicker at the same time.

Another piece of information is that some phone manufacturers advertise flicker free eye care by ramping up the OLED display PWM (some 400 and others 1,000+) so throughout the brightness range flicker becomes imperceptible.
Wow I was interested in this Samsung, but that vrr flicker is bad. BTW why is it that the flickering is so evident with Alan Wake and there is none with the other games you show? Were you using a console?
I can kind of make it happen in any game. Alan Wake with raytracing enabled is very heavy so the frame rates swings causing the monitors to go in and out of LFC. You can see this with the frame counter on the LG to the right.
Really interesting, was thinking about getting a G80SD or even a LG C4 42 inch but might have to rethink it. I usually sit in a bright room and also can't stand flickering. Is there are 38-42 inch mini-led option that is a good choice, or is it 32 inches that has the worthwhile models? Edit: Also now realized the Mini-LED is almost twice the price of the monitors I considered... Feeling very lost what to get for about 1300 EUR at most!
There is nothing in the 38-42" worth buying which is a huge shame. The only alternative is the Neo G7 43 which is atrocious or its TV counterpart which is better but still too compromised. Yes this 3 year old Asus is still super expensive but its expense is IMO justified if your priority is HDR performance. Its sister model is the Viewsonic XG321UG which may be less expensive in your region. The other 32" options are the Innocn 32M2V (IPS), Neo G8 (VA), KTC M32P10 (IPS). There is also the Acer X32 and Asus PG32UQXR but both have half the zone count at 576 zones. I think a lot of the mini led development has slowed down both because OLED is less expensive to produce and far less complicated in terms of development (no backlight, no local dimming algorithm, etc) but also the average consumer is really wow'd by OLED contrast. I'm going to try and buy some of those other monitors to compare but they are all pretty expensive and I'm just a display hobbyist.
@@SolaceinScrutinyYou can always just get a VA mini-LED for much cheaper to achieve the same thing these fancy IPS are doing. They come with their own drswbacks but those have been mostly smoothed out recently.

Yeah TV environment can be very different from a monitor. Many can't control the light in a living area where a TV is placed so the extra brightness helps to offset the ambient light.
They both have their benefits in drawbacks. Realistically, you can compare them side by side. Mini-LED is brighter and will affect how the OLED looks with how the camera and your eyes adjust. A mini-LED will perform better in a dark room. An OLED will have better contrast and deeper blacks that will allow for better dark content in the future. Apple's new iPad Pro OLED screen makes the old pro look blue. OLED is also better for your eyes. Most of the issues that have been pointed out about the Samsung seem to be software related and not the panel. These can be fixed by firmware updates. OLED has also has more potential.
Hey I have the ipad-pro with M2 chip . I know exactly the weird dim look that ipad has. My LED QLED TV makes my $1100 Ipad pro looks like $300 dog shi. When side by side Weirdest thing. Got an OLED TV but sometimes I dislike the image, a lot. Like many bright daytime scenes never seem to look like... bright daytime. That bums the hell out of me. Then sometimes it looks spectacular, like something I've never seen before. The other option was a VA-panel TV with a viewing angle of like 10 degrees :D I love my VA monitor, but on a TV the viewing angle seems to matter a lot more. I tried a 1500€ Sony one, and the amount of disbelief I was processing when I noticed the problem, was actually funny in hindsight :D In conclusion - OLED is the only TV tech that is currently a viable option. Monitors - just stay clear of Samsung lol

Thank you. Yes I see blooming I think the blooming in dark scenes is acceptable given how bright it gets in every other scenario. Keep in mind that the blooming people recorded and documented in reviews when the Asus launched is not currently the case. It went through some firmware update or revision that completely changed how the local dimming behaves so it blooms far less now.
Cancelled my G80SD because of this, I've owned OLEDs before but I got caught up in the hype again. The dimness, VRR, and stutter at low frame rates is unbearable on console.

I’m really glad you’re shining light on this. So much of this scene is convinced that OLED is truly flawless but they’re just coping as they turn off that taskbar to prevent burn in. Furthermore, Sonys upcoming flagship is ditching QD-OLED for mini LED. If that’s not telling I don’t know what is. Both of these have quantum dots fyi
Sony has a Inzone mini led monitor brand which uses a similar local dimming approach to their prior TV's (more focus on algorithm vs zone count). Eventually all of that flagship TV R&D will trickle down to their monitors when it becomes less cost prohibitive.
QD-OLED is fantastic. The new qd-oled monitors only go up to 400 nits on a 10% window, which is far inferior to qd-oled televisions. The only lcd's, imo, that can rival oled are ips. VA's have so many weird issues including ghosting and shitty viewing angles.

I do not get the appeal of HDR. I set my monitor brightness to 101 cd/m². Anything higher and the monitor becomes eyestrain it is like you are looking directly at the sun burning your eyes. I would rather have the significantly better pixel response time and deep blacks of OLED.
It’s all subjective. Your setting and everything make these side by side almost impossible to determine whether one is better than the other. Calibration is key in all of these examples.
Once PHOLEDs arrive oleds should get much brighter and more resistant to burn-in. I agree with you about the HDR experience, current oled monitors don't hold a candle to the mini-led monitors. However because of how good oleds motion clarity and input lag is I'll still stick with oled. Also the qd-oled TVs are way brighter for HDR.
As soon as its available I'll buy one to compare. Looks very impressive on paper but all of these mini-led monitors are at the mercy of their local dimming algorithms so even if it has 1100 zones and is capable of 1600nits, it means nothing if it crushes dark detail or the local dimming is inaccurate or slow.

No, I think you'll be overjoyed by the lack of bloom and smoothness of 360hz which will outweigh the brightness advantage of the KTC. Let me know if this turns out to be the case when you setup the G6.
@@SolaceinScrutiny you were not joking this monitor blows the KTC out of the water, while In full screen brightness and some highlights the KTC did get slightly brighter. The colors and overall imagine quality is much better on the oled, plus the 360 hz and the low response time are icing on the cake.

Regarding the miniLED monitor - what about when it's not in HDR mode, does the backlight still work? For example productivity apps like Photoshop which have a darker background, is the backlight 100% on or if you would display a black image the zones there would be off like in HDR mode?
@@agiverreviga4592 local dimming will automatically come on for HDR. In SDR, I leave local dimming off unless I'm gaming. The monitor has a memory so you can set how you like. When I switch to SDR, local dimming shuts off. When I go to HDR it's enabled.

The problem with the misconception of HDR is that many Internet users are mostly dirt poor. They cannot afford high-end monitors like the true HDR monitor PG32UQX and can only use lower-tier monitors from Korea, like Samsung or LG, which are stuck in SDR. Then they start to hallucinate about what dynamic range means. I told these guys that whatever monitor looks like real life is the PG32UQX, which can basically be a window into the real world. They don't even know what that means. When I first picked a QD-OLED like the AW3423DW and placed it next to my G-Sync powered backlight mini-LED monitors from PG27UQ, PG35VQ, and PG32UQX, the AW3423DW immediately looked like garbage in comparison. I keep telling them I always use monitors in a pitch-black room to enjoy the full benefit of 1500+ nits large window-sized HDR. They even thought I was an OLED user.
Yeah no question that the PG32UQX is expensive and well beyond what most people are willing to spend on a monitor but I'm not at all doing a best value HDR monitor comparison here. I'm just showing what I believe is the best gaming HDR monitor vs what everyone else seems to be yelling at the top of their lungs as the best (all of these OLED monitors). Even when considering price, the Samsung G80SD is an outlier with all these launch promotions because people are sniping PG32UCDM's the moment they're in stock at $1299 when its effectively identical in performance outside of matte vs glossy to this Samsung G80SD that can be had for $900-999 before even including Samsungs $300 promotion. I personally don't think the $1750 that the PG32UQX goes on sale for is a huge stretch when you're already spending $1300 on a monitor. Besides that, monitors are a infrequent purchase for most. I'm not even going to get into OLED longevity but most hang onto monitors for 3-5 years so that price difference spread over 5 years of use is pretty insignificant in the grand scheme of things. If you're an enthusiast who really values HDR, its a no brainer. But yeah, I agree with you. When it comes to HDR, the PG32UQX is unmatched. Especially this later version that seems to have a much more refined local dimming algorithm. I'm going to try some of these other mini led monitors soon but I don't have high hopes because they have no hardware Gsync module doing all the work. The problem is I feel like I'm speaking to an audience who are 50% sweaty esports players so image quality, resolution, HDR, etc are all generally irrelevant to them or at least very low priority. The only aspect of image quality they tend to value is motion clarity and outside of image quality, input lag. Those are both areas where these 240/360hz OLED's excel so I understand the discourse but this isn't an attack on their preference. It's just my opinions.

Esports players use TN panels because they can still be faster, brighter, and more useful than short-lived OLEDs. The monitor audience won't change until they get out of impoverishment, and that won't happen anytime soon. So don't expect the internet to understand because they cannot even see HDR or compete in esports. The best thing to do is to use all available tools to make SDR into HDR1400 to enjoy content in a way no one else can. Life is short. There is little point in spending or even wasting time on the internet trying to convince the audience.

I though the same. I hava a Samsung G6 and an Oled. The change is good, buy brightnes is not. I think that people feel that change, that big cause jumpo from lcd IPS to an Oled. From VA with zone or mini led, to Oled, It feels great, but is not that big. At least in many scenarios.
You mentioned the innocn 32mv, how different is that compared to the asus since its is a more compelling budget option with similar specs? Would you choose the qd oled over the innocn?
The Innocn's local dimming is significantly worse and its even more smeary than the Asus in motion. For most people its probably just fine but those are 2 big cons other than the at times buggy behavior.
am i the only one here , look at the bright highlights too overblown lost detail and i mean a lot same with the dark higlights lost detail evrywhere its brighter and oles need some caching up but the mini led is too overblown in bright and dark highlights so its not ideal ither
This is just the camera due to the PG32UQX being so much brighter even when I handicapped it to just 1000nits. In person the highlights retain all their detail. I'm getting a new camera to better demonstrate these monitors.
@@SolaceinScrutinyMost the 1440p options are VA so you won't need as many zones. KTC M27T20 and AOC Q27G3XMN are both excellent budget options in that order.
10:10 is the Asus clipping or that's just how it looks being that it gets much brighter? The rocks are completely blown out no detail in the middle, same for waterfall. The shadowed cave in the left also looks better on the OLED thanks to the contrast. I use a C2 in a dim room but with fairly bright bias lighting to avoid eye strain as well as because in HDR bright games absolutely get bright enough. I really wouldn't want more luminance from a display unless I was always using it in a lit room which for gaming I try to avoid. LCDs and miniLEDs are dead tech imo unless you absolutely need 2000 nits highlights and full field. OLED is a nice stop gap unless microLED.
@@mertk.3386 Talk about what? The Samsung has more contrast, the Asus is brighter and even that doesn't cover up the massive gap in contrast. You can also pause at any point in the race and see how much blurrier the LCD is with the slower pixel response. I don't know what fps the game is getting but even if the OLED was match to 144fps to be equal to the Asus its still not even close. By all means if all you care about is brightness get an LCD monitor, but as far as mini-LED FALD monitors go that have a dimming algorithm as good as this Asus you can count on one hand, slim pickings.
It's just the camera. The Asus retains far more highlight detail especially in games with ridiculous HDR implementations like the original Horizen Zero Dawn that is mastered to 10000nits.
i have an OLED and a mini LED display for an year, for comparison in movies, hdr or sdr, doesn't matter, oled always win. For me any technology than OLED will have like a little fog on the image, i don't know how to say in words what i see.
All consumer OLED tvs exhibit black crush. Monitors are even worse with both black crush AND poor EOTF tracking above shadow detail. OLED is only great for SDR. You are just used to this overly contrasty image. Bad minileds also do this to be fair. If you say you like OLED for the crisp motion, then fair enough. But for HDR it's no contest.

I've been trying out all the new monitors coming out, I've tried ultrawides qd oleds, woleds, and a bunch of va and ips monitors, the one i ended up keeping is the new 4k qd-oled Alienware 240hz and honestly i love it, but I've always seen tvs at Best buy with amazing brightness so i always feel like the monitors could do better. I never tried a mini led monitor before but I've been wanting to, i think this is my sign to get one, I'll get this asus monitor and decide which one to keep definitely. I love playing competitive titles and single player titles and i don't know if im going to like going back to 144hz 🤔

@@SolaceinScrutiny okay yesterday I retuned the pg32uqx, definitely would've kept it 3 years ago, brightness is great but the clarity and fluidity of the qd oleds its just too good and also the per pixel illumination just shines when it comes to HDR, now I'm gonna try that new glossy Asus woled.
If you really have to record in stereo, do you know how easy it is to copy and paste the audio track over to the other channel? Either that or just record in mono. People really need to learn to double check their uploads because a simple thing like this makes a video so much less watchable.
How does the PG32UQX compare to the Neo G8 mini led in your opinion? I've been really disappointed by HDR performance in these OLED monitors and unless they can provide a somewhat comparable experience come next year I'll probably end up nabbing a miniled.
Neo G8 is pretty mediocre IMO. Its two biggest issues are that it just doesn't get bright enough and the color volume is poor. It looks really washed out next to the PG32UQX. Also I'm not a fan of its local dimming because it can appear really cloudy in dark scenes. Yeah these OLED monitors are just too compromised but hopefully we'll see some advances in 2025/2026. There is such a massive difference between the 55" S90D and 32" G80SD. I mean the TV's 25% window brightness is 2x what the monitors is.

Yes its down to local dimming algorithm and implementation. The Neo G8 sacrifices too much to minimize bloom to the point where its literally a worse version of these QD-OLED in almost every way. Its like Samsung went out of their way to try and create a LCD OLED by chasing contrast and contrast only. It's only marginally brighter full field and otherwise gets similarly bright in content in the 1-10% range, exhibits VRR flicker, has far worse colors, worse pixel response (though in practice the difference is pretty minor), horrible viewing angles and you get horizontal scan lines at 240hz. Is the g9 57" a good mini-led monitor? The ppi is very good and the 240fps too, but I am worried about the panel type. It has 2k+ dimming zones, but I don't know about the algorithm and the surface is still huge there.
I think its okay. The local dimming behavior is both an improvement from the Neo G8 and regression in that it lingers illuminated zones too long. The biggest issue with that monitor like the Neo G8 is that the colors are poor and viewing angles horrendous. No matter where you position your head, either the sides or top or bottom loses saturation because of those poor viewing angles. If you can position it far enough away this is mitigated a bit but still there. The other big issue is that when you enable HDR, it has diagonal scan lines. That is the #1 deal breaker for that monitor to me personally because I can see the weird crosshatch pattern even in games.

What about for a guy like me that is an hibernating bear ? Do you still notice a difference with MINI LED ? Are you still able to turn the brightness to its max potential without burning your eyes ?
I think this burning eyes thing is a misconception. When you go outside and look at the glare of the sun off a cars paint, that is 5000nits+ so a monitors brightness relative to what you're eyes manage every day is insignificant. The monitor is never too bright, in fact it should be brighter to handle content mastered at 4000 and 10000nits. Just keep in mind that its level of brightness is not some arbitrary flashbang, if the content demands 1200nits over a 25% screen area, it will provide that. When the content demands sub 5nits, that's what you get.
This burning eyes thing is a real physical concept. The company Barco which is a reputed cinema screen manufacturer has conducted some tests in the previous decade with a giant experimental MICRO-LED cinema display to quantify how much luminance would become unbearable for the audience inside of a classic pitch dark movie theatre and they concluded that it was around 500 nits in those circumstances. When you go outside on a bright day even a matte paint on a concrete wall directly facing the sun could be 15,000 nits , and a bright car paint could even hit 100,000 nits. However a retina has its own dynamic range tolerance which is why almost every species has an iris which works exactly the same as camera aperture aimed at controlling the amount of luminance that could go through in order to avoid brightness saturation or worse, damaging the sensor or the iris. Given the eye works in a logarithmic way we won't see too much difference between 5,000 and 70,000 unlike the difference between 100 and 200 nits which is highly noticeable to us. In a brightly lit environment such as sunny day, this very same iris will shrink in order to target that limited amount of dynamic range towards the brighter shades as the eye won't be able (and usually won't need) to see some deep dark shades anymore like the inside of a pipe. On the flipside, at night, the iris will extend, allowing the eye to aim for the lower shades of brightness but will totally dazzle if something really bright suddenly appears, this is why we also get temporary dazzled when coming out from a dark room to the outside on a sunny day as the iris has now to expose the retina to the brighter shades. In the case of a bright display like a full blown MINI LED in a completely pitch black room, the eye is suddenly facing two contradictory types of exposition as the iris doesn't know if it should adapt to the room or to the display which causes the dazzling effect IF and only if the display is bright enough to the point that it exceeds that retina's dynamic range tolerance. The monitor could get too bright which is why Dolby decided to cap HDR10 PQ at 10,000 nits after experimenting on a 32" highly experimental Mini LED TV a little more than a decade ago. Now I wonder if that Asus MiniLED is already able to hit that threshold or if we still have a more head room in the case of a pitch black room environment.
I think a simple bias light behind the display (like I use) mitigates this quite a bit and also increases perceived contrast. I personally have no issue in terms of eye comfort with the Asus especially when you consider that this isn't a massive cinema display that is at a constant 500nits full field. It momentarily pushes 10-25% window size highlights for seconds at a time and does 50-75% at 1000nits+ for quick bursts.
🔆I think oled will be eventually be the end game when it gets dual stack oled panels, fullscreen 1000nits is needed. I only started to think iPad’s brightness is enough for me this year when it got the tandem oled, and it is noticeable and better than the fullscreen 600nits miniled iPad Pro from before, now its SDR can go up to 1000nits. Also the miniled MacBook Pro is the same for me, I use vivid app to unlock extra brightness during the day to get fullscreen 1000nits (somehow even bright than the 1000nits SDR oled, I think macOS’ EDR might have mapped it to more than 1000nits, and I always find my external monitor which is 400nits too dim during the day, and ok at night. But the way, I have bias lights for my monitor, plenty of lights behind desk, white light strips behind the monitors with adjustable color temp (Nanoleaf but only use whites) and benq screen bar. There is a decent amount of light during the day. I don’t have exposed direct light sources, but I keep my desk environment relatively bright to reduce eye strain or any potential damage, also room just looks nicer with well lit functional lights.
4:43 and 6:61 Can't see any detail or color in the shadows, it's all gone in MINILED despite that behemoth having more than 1000 zones. This sure illustrates how one display technology will favor some type of games and some type of ambient light
In that VRR flicker segment, the right isn't mini led, its the LG 32GS95UE WOLED from my other video which crushes dark detail really bad. The Samsung is far better calibrated out of the box.
I mean, that's what the mini-LED would do in scenes like that as well. It's either black crush or overblown surroundings with gray shadows. IPS isn't the way to go with mini-LED, not until IPS Black becomes mainstream and you'll still need more zones than 1100.
I'm sorry if anyone asked this before, but have you tested X32FP? How does it stack against PG32UQX? I have a potentially pretty good deal, so I would like to get some information from someone clearly well-versed in mini-led panels!
The blooming will be more noticeable due to half the zones. Pixel response is better though so you shouldn't have noticeable smearing. It's about 50% of the way to the PG32UQX so if you can get a good deal it could be worth it.
I'm lucky enough to own both OLED and Mini-LED displays, and I almost always prefer the brightness of a well-tuned Mini-LED HDR picture. I wish they would make glossy Mini-LEDS!

I have used the pg32uqx for two yrs recently changed to the pg32ucdm and I can’t be happier. It’s so much smoother there is zero white smear that’s the issue with the uqx is white smear and the bloom but the oled has zero of either yes it’s not as bright but it’s so much cleaner looking image.
How have you found the HDR to be compared to the pg32uqx?

Line i said before the uqx is ok it’s just super old tech the panel is so slow it’s bad and has white smear. Look at some reviews of the uqx the panel is to slow and I notice white smear on like candles in d4 even or some other white items being displayed drives me crazy and the bloom is also a bad thing.

This is the best LCD I've ever seen. It's remarkable what Asus achieved with this. Colour accuracy, motion, brightness, shadow quality, blooming control are all fantastic. I'm extremely picky and I honestly would never buy another LCD ever again, but this one is special. You should compare it with a Panasonic OLED TV or a Sony OLED TV. I highly doubt this compares to any other LCD.

Great Video. I recently sold my PG32UQX for the new PG32UCDM OLED display. While there are some things I do miss about it, the PG32UCDM is better in almost every way. Motion Clarity, 240hz refresh rate, 1000 nits peak is actually pretty bright when you have zero blooming and an amazing contrast in dark scenes. Full screen brightness, especially in daytime scenes is where the PG32UQX really shines and blows OLED out of the water.
Yeah its a preference thing. There are plenty here who believe the opposite. Just depends what characteristics you value more.
i would say the pg32uscdm is better for horror/dark games, pg32uqx is better in bright games :O

No problem. I think OLED is a great step up from your average IPS/VA budget gaming monitor and has a place but its being put on a pedestal by most reviewers without really considering its short comings.
One of the reasons to stick with oled is the response time, motion clarity will be way better with a similiar refresh rate.
@@verttisyrjala2897Response time compared to good LCD panels is inconceivable by the naked eye. While you're correct on motion clarity that only applies to high refresh rate, for any singleplayer game below 120fps an LCD with strobing will provide better results.

OLED is great, just not the handicapped desktop monitor versions we currently have available to us.
Also, I wouldn't say they're lying, they are just incentivized to say mostly great things about OLED since they are provided the products for review. These are just my own opinions in the video, others of course feel differently.
Yes! My Samsung s90C TV is very bright, but my ultrawide monitor g8 oled gets dark and changes brightness all the time. I used to have an asus pg27uq and I still miss it, it was just so beautiful
Yes, OLED has tons of fanboys that refuse to acknowledge any flaws of the technology. That combined with people who've only ever used shitty office monitors up until their shiny new toy makes up the vast majority of those takes. At the end of the day it depends on your use case, neither is objectively better than the other.

The main reason is because of burn in concerns. Tandem oled tech gets bright as seen in latest the flagship iPad.
Even with the budget for a 1000€ OLED, I decided to buy a cheap miniLED monitor, the KOORUI GN10.
I really recommend it to everyone, it's HDR 1000 and VA, you'll have deep blacks and nice highlights.
It goes perfectly with my PS5.
So glad to see a video saying what I've been expressing to everyone since the "Hype" of OLED's in the monitor space. I rock a PG32UQX and before that had the Asus 27 PG27UQ (It's older brother)... nothing touches a super high end mini led for HDR like these types of monitors. It's not even close. And the PG32UQX had near OLED blacks due its increased zone count over the older brother. THE only way OLED can compete with these high end Mini-LED monitors is for some companies to copy what Apple just came out a week ago with their "Tadem-OLED" (Basically Stacked OLED) and that's not even feasible for a gaming display, as the overhead of the GPU needing to run this stacked kind of display in perfect sync with each other would likely bring issues for VRR technologies and bandwidth/latency issues. It's sad that the entire industry is focusing on OLED's (Probably bc they are cheaper to produce) opposed to offering even more high end mini-led monitor options.
The PG32UQX ansi contrast ratio isn't all that great but actual content isn't checkboard pattern outside of like star fields so real world contrast is pretty good. Good enough that I also don't think the perceived difference is that big. Like I said in the video, its a marginal improvement while the difference in colors and brightness is a far more significant which is why I accept the PG32UQX's bloom as a trade off. The monitors biggest weakness is pixel response (especially white/light colors). If they would release a 5000+ zone successor with a faster panel and bumped the refresh rate to like 160 or 180hz, I don't think I'd need anything else until micro led comes to the PC monitor space.
I think we are a few GPU generations away from 4K/240 being achievable especially with so many future games being UE5 titles which I can't even break 70-90FPS in with a 4090 right now. Of course this doesn't apply to older titles or esports stuff but like I mentioned, I buy a high quality display to play games with high quality graphics.
Actually qd oled does use stacked layers. There are 3 layers of the blue emitter and many believe there is a green pholed layer as well. Its practically the same approach.

Solid video as ima make a few points
1. OLEDS in general are dimmer which you miss out alot of the brightness and as i watched the video in some areas the detail looks a tad bit cleaner but the brightness loss / OLED dim is to huge. I had a LG CX before and i use to look at it kinda sideways as it was dim as well. The contrast is there for sure but with that you lose it with how dim the panel is so its a + and - effect
2. You compared a 1,900$ Mini led to a 1,299 QD-OLED. I think this would been more apples to apples if you would of did the QD-OLED vs Samsung neo G7/G8. Alot of people not spending 2k on a monitor as well so this would of been in the ball park and a fair comparison
3. The content when playing games was being done on PC or console with HDR ON or OFF?
Other then that, Prob one of the best videos to show the difference between a QD-OLED and MINI LED. Mini LED is much richer and brighter and you dont lose much its like 95% of the oled and you dont have to worry about burn in / Dimming and Auto Static Brightness Limiter

This video wasn't really intended to be apples to apples, its to demonstrate the potential of mini-led and that it still has a place in todays market where there is an OLED frenzy. It's also to show that OLED still has a long way to go in my opinion before it really shines in HDR. Of course for most, these OLED's are awesome monitors, I just tend to scrutinize far more than the average joe.
This was all done on PC, just no where near enough flexibility on console. Also like I said, I had to reduce the PG32UQX's brightness because it gets so bright (1700nits from 1-50% window) that it makes the OLED look like I have it at 10% brightness.
EDIT: I'm in the process of getting a hold of a Neo G8 to compare to both the PG32UQX and G8 OLED.

Gaming on mini led turned out to be far better than I thought, it really pulls you into the scene giving an immersive quality no other screens give. Any lighting effects it totally brings it alive in a game, the sun, special effects, street lights, or even just watching sdr content like star wars a light saber actually glows like crazy it's the coolest thing ever. For me the spot dynamic lighting effect alone is the biggest selling point it's just so cool and should be seen as a whole other attribute or technology. I keep hearing people not define it as such but just a brighter screen for better hdr, when in reality the spot lighting even on just sdr content is more of a selling point than better hdr since most things are sdr.
One thing nobody seems to comment on is Samsung's inability to display orange correctly, its comes off as a pinkish red like at 6:17. I have both a QLED and an LG OLED and the issue is clear as day when comparing those too.

All the OLED hype online pushed me to buy an LG C2 last year and while it is a huge upgrade over my 1440p LCD monitor from 2018, I really do regret buying it after over a year of using it so far. I know now that if I would've waited out a bit longer or did more research at that time, I would've ended up getting a QD-OLED or a high-end mini led TV and been much happier. Not like I had to break the bank or anything to get the C2 but I definitely should've done more research instead of buying into the hype from the massive online LG fanbase. The C2's mirror-like coating and starfield-like scenes in HDR were the only things that really wow'd my friends and family, but outside of that it didn't look that impressive at all especially for anime and sports which is what we mostly watch.
😢this hurts me to see ppl like I got tricked to get C2 or A95J n C3 A80L , B3 A75L etc n paying 3X price . N stress about burn in .

Bit too dim for me tho as it is the Same brightness as that Samsung Odyssey. But in Canada n EU they have S92C which is sweet spot for pricing, for 1300nits without paying S95C price. Samsung is skechy tho, anyone buy Samsung TV needs to--NOT ever connect to Internet. They will FORCE update even it has set to “disable auto update”. N tv will slow down, n gets dimmer each time. Needs to get external streaming device . Mini LED or QD-OLED from Samsung can not escape it.

@@Yoga_Tv_buying u can unlock the brightness on the s90c as well using the same service menu adjustments. U won’t be able to do regular updates, which to me isn’t a big deal at all really. Oh okay u get it. I just read the rest of ur comment lol. Yea Samsung is awful nerfing the brightness of the s95b 30% among other things. I just use my pc to stream. I think the problem is when the prompt pops up asking either to “update now” or “update later” people think “update later” means “do not update for now” essentially, as they should, but it really means the update is just going to occur later on and u will not get the same notification.
I can't believe it's been 3 years since I bought my mini led TV which is 1800 nits and there are still almost no options in the monitor market that are similar.
All we get is the same e-waste 200 nit oled panel announced from every manufacturer every year. The motion improvement is not worth the other drawbacks of oled.
After 7 months of research and returning a g9 I finally settled on the TCL 34R83Q, getting it next week, hope it's good enough. Should be around the same HDR performance as this Asus, if the backlight is as fast.
The TCL is still smaller and lower res than what I would want, but the monitor market is so bad and it's impossible to follow product cycles like with TVs. All you know is "maybe" something might come out in a couple of years and then it gets cancelled...

The TV market has flipped upside down too. Hisense U8N , TCL Q851 looks better than LG G4 , since they r bright n with Color Density/Volume Match with QD-OLED. 😮 it piss a lot of ppl off becusee they buy WOLED 😮to feel pristege , now LED look so much better . Lots ppl in denial 😮.
My U8G 2021 65” makes my 2023 -$1100 iPad-Pro with M2 Chip look like $300 junk 😮 . Its insane
A decent middle ground is the LG C4 48" or the LG C4 42". It will never be as bright as mini led, but I prefer it over blooming. The infinite contrast of OLED is preferable IMO.
This is coming from my experience owning the Samsung G9 57" Ultrawide.
The only way I would do MINI LED again is if they can do a better blooming algorithm and use a better panel for better contrast. I don't think IPS black is there yet.
Dude C4 so dim black crushing ! I saw Hisense ADS-pro full gloss 75” U8K , n this year U8N already incky black . U see so much more . Because C2 C3 A80L all sever low Color volume. Dim images can look grey tinted . Lack of pop .

The PG32UQX is a great monitor but for how old it is, I'm surprised that its still so expensive with no price drops. It costs double of the QDOLEDs where I live.

I think we all understand OLED monitors are still extremely underwhelming.

I actually think the inverse is true in the TV market. Most companies have heavily banked on OLED and left LCD to stagnate. OLED TV's large window size brightness remains mediocre like the monitors, but 25% window size and below they are 2-4x brighter which makes a huge difference in perceived HDR impact. For most people, OLED TV's provide a fantastic viewing experience with little reason to move back to a LCD based model outside of very specific circumstances like an environment with limited ambient light control or those who are news network obsessed.
Thankfully Sony has put R&D back into LCD in 2024 and along with TCL are really leading the charge toward making mini led TV's more competitive. I personally believe that these current OLED's have always been a stop gap solution and I'm relieved to see Sony pushing the envelope. In the future I think their approach of a LCD based flagships with OLED models filling their mid tier lineup will become the norm mainly because OLED isn't a jack of all trades and still can't adequately present all HDR content (bright stuff) while mini led handles the bright stuff with ease and is capable of doing dark stuff well enough that the difference doesn't matter to most. What I personally dislike is Samsung's approach to mini led based TV's and monitors where the local dimming tries so hard to suppress bloom in an attempt to compete with OLED contrast that it destroys picture quality. Let LCD flex where its best (brightness) instead of trying to strangle it into something it's not.

I personally leave VRR off on my Alienware 34DW because of the flickering, none the less the monitor is still AMAZING, only upgrade from this would be ROG's 240hz 34 or 39" WOLED

I have the ViewSonic XG321UG which is basically the same monitor as the PG32UQX as it uses exact the same panel from AU Optronics and I agree with your observations. Which local dimming setting do you use in HDR? I use the balanced one, where small highlights are a bit brighter and transition of the zones is less aggressive. In SDR I can use the faster setting.
I think there is a difference between the two when it comes to local dimming. The newer revisions of the PG32UQX it makes no sense to use anything but the level 3 or fastest setting which behaves some where between the XG321UG's balanced and fastest setting.
Situation in EU is horrible. We can either choose Samsung Odyssey Neo G7, Neo G8 or Neo G9, or choose a 576 local dimming zones 4K monitor that costs as much or more than the Neo G7 and G8, more than a 1440p OLED. Granted it's 4K at least at 27 inch with good PPI.
What 576 zones mini-LED would you recommend the most? Have you tested them? It's impossible to get 1152 zones IPS miniLED with true HDR 1000+ here, which is what I would've liked.
I had tried the Acer XV275K P3 but it's local dimming solution is horrible. It's bright for sure but in the majority of scenes the blooming is readily visible and very intense.
Innocn 27M2V is not available in EU? I can't recommend any of the 576 zone monitors available today. They are all plagued with poor local dimming algorithms and I don't personally think the zone count is acceptable now a days. I actually think the 384 zone PG27UQ and X27 from almost 6 years ago perform better than these new 576 zone monitors.
There is the Asus PG32UQXR but I haven't tested it myself. I'm interested in getting one in the future to test but I've only heard bad things about the overdrive tuning.

Yeah its a regression from its 3 year old predecessor in every way other than pixel response. I personally don't understand why it exists to be honest. It's MSRP is $1299 but should be like $899 or less.

Its kind of a shame how the manufacturers limit the monitors when QD oled TVs can get alot brighter. The 10 percent window performance is very important for hdr gaming
This is what I've been saying for years. OLED is awesome, but the brightness is worlds different. The brightest OLEDs only really get to 500-700 nits in a real game scene, thanks to ABL curves (LCDs also have ABL curves but they're far less aggressive).
I have an OLED phone that does 1600 nits of brightness sustained across the whole screen, which is 400 nits brighter than my PG32UQX can sustain across the whole screen! And while it looks amazing, the simple truth is I can't game on that phone, and OLED TVs/monitors can only do 200 nits fullscreen. The tech just isn't the perfect thing everyone always claims, and it's so frustrating hearing everyone talk about how incredible the barely HDR picture of an OLED is, whilst simultaneously dunking on competing tech that's just as flawed but better looking.
We really need MicroLED to just kill both sides so we can move on past this dumb debate and appreciate real HDR together.

For what it's worth, I have a PG259QN (1st gen 360hz IPS with mediocre response times for the given refresh rate) and I greatly prefer my PG32UQX at 120hz even in competitive titles where I DO get 360hz, purely for the HDR picture. The brightness and color just reveal targets so easily and keep enemies visible even in pixel response blur.

Asus and other Mini-LED manufacturers source their panels from AU Optronics, so we're waiting for them to make better panels. And Samsung doesn't know how to make something with adequate cooling so their Mini-LEDs have TONS of ABL, oh and they completely lied about the peak brightness of their Mini-LED displays... 2000 nits? Try 1200 peak 10% and 400 sustained 100%. Compared to the PG32UQX which does 1600 sustained 10% and 1200 sustained 100%.
Final Edit: Oh yeah, and companies like Hisense have managed to get much better zone density, like 3x that of the PG32UQX, as well as 10,000 nits peak brightness in some of the newer stuff. So these advancements will trickle down. I'd expect gen 3 Mini-LED to have 3000 nits of brightness, and 2000+ zones at the high end. AUO are making a 4608 zone 32 inch panel this year.

My desk monitor is a QN90C Samsung Miniled tv. While it has black smearing and viewing angles aren't ideal while sitting close to it. It's advantage is that it can play HDR content throughout the whole day vs My A80j OLED who outshines it at night as a bed TV. Honestly I'm excited that Sony has decided to make their flagships Miniled instead. I'd love for them to release a 43 inch or other monitors. Their color accuracy, sharpness upscaling, and motion are just a step above the other brands. Well worth the premium. Miniled is coming!
How close is the Innocn 32MV2 to this Asus mini LED? I think you mentioned in the video that you've tried it before. Also, have you tried any of the newer LG C3 or C4 42 inch to compare with these? I believe the 42 inch TV Oled have have better brightness at larger window sizes such as 10% window.
The Innocn in my opinion doesn't really come close. The local dimming is a total mess in comparison. It will use way more zones then necessary to brighten a highlight so bloom is far more noticeable. On paper the Innocn is faster in terms of pixel response overall but in actual use I found it more blurry in motion. Maybe the lack of adaptive overdrive is what contributes to that.
Yes I use to daily drive a LG C2 42. They are brighter at 10% but significantly more dim at 50% and above which means sometimes the LG's can be brighter and other times dimmer.

Even with its problems I prefer OLED but I also believe OLED as a technology will likely be beat by micro led.

Color brightness seems to be a huge issue with oled (even with qd-oled good color volume). colors just look muddy, lack of punchiness and contrast between different colors.
Yes the OLED can look completely lifeless and flat and its not a infrequent thing. Literally 60% of the content I consume results in ABL destroying the resulting image due to how dim it gets.

Yeah I keep hearing about poor performance but it has received a couple firmware updates that supposedly address its local dimming. LG was suppose to arrive today but looks like it won't come until Monday. I personally don't think its worth comparing to the Neo G8 (I'd rather compare it to the PG32UQX) but let me see first how it performs.

I couldnt agree more. I bought the corsair flex oled and was shocked at how bad it was for most of my needs. Maybe for gaming and media consumption of dark scenes its great but overall its not good. I "upgraded" to a $400 no brand hdr1000 mini led and I love it so much more.

Except it doesn't work well for Resident Evil because the game clips the highlights at the configured luminance after rendering them at full brightness. This means the further from max game brightness you go, the less highlight details you get, looks awful unless you set a tonemapping curve.
This Samsung supports HGIG and tonemaps down to its luminance capability. There is a noticeable difference in highlight detail between HGIG off and on. Off just over brightens and loses details while on is dimmer but retains the detail.

I agree with you that Mini-LED has a place in the market absolutely, but what is mini-LED better at? As far as I can tell the main difference is brightness and text clarity.

I never understood the fetish for more brightness? I mean I am using like 75 brightness now and if more I would feel like I am burning my retinas. OLED for me has never been too dimm. But with that said, HDR in Windows overall doesn't feel good yet for a set-and-forget usage. It's still buggy and sometimes not switch automatic or working at all for some games. I am gonna stick with my LG 32GQ950 that I know isn't even a Mini-LED but still got a very good picture imo. It's Nano IPS so very fast still and comes with a ATQ Polarizer that helps removing any IPS Glow (mine got none!) that you are used to. Still no deep OLED Blacks but I think I can wait bit more since burn-in is still also a factor if you're gonna use the monitor for anything else then just gaming and movies. I want Micro-LED now!

4:54 Flicker is due to PWM. Well, it's caused because the way VRR works on OLED is by recalculating the brightness from the previous frame, it's not the same as LCD. Most modern LCD displays use DC for brightness dimming, I say most because even LCD panels can use PWM. LTT did a video on the ROG Zephyrus G14/G16 that explains it, where in the process of getting a lower power VRR solution they kinda elegantly solve VRR flicker at the same time.

Another piece of information is that some phone manufacturers advertise flicker free eye care by ramping up the OLED display PWM (some 400 and others 1,000+) so throughout the brightness range flicker becomes imperceptible.
Wow I was interested in this Samsung, but that vrr flicker is bad. BTW why is it that the flickering is so evident with Alan Wake and there is none with the other games you show? Were you using a console?
I can kind of make it happen in any game. Alan Wake with raytracing enabled is very heavy so the frame rates swings causing the monitors to go in and out of LFC. You can see this with the frame counter on the LG to the right.
Really interesting, was thinking about getting a G80SD or even a LG C4 42 inch but might have to rethink it. I usually sit in a bright room and also can't stand flickering. Is there are 38-42 inch mini-led option that is a good choice, or is it 32 inches that has the worthwhile models?
Edit: Also now realized the Mini-LED is almost twice the price of the monitors I considered... Feeling very lost what to get for about 1300 EUR at most!
There is nothing in the 38-42" worth buying which is a huge shame. The only alternative is the Neo G7 43 which is atrocious or its TV counterpart which is better but still too compromised.
Yes this 3 year old Asus is still super expensive but its expense is IMO justified if your priority is HDR performance. Its sister model is the Viewsonic XG321UG which may be less expensive in your region.
The other 32" options are the Innocn 32M2V (IPS), Neo G8 (VA), KTC M32P10 (IPS). There is also the Acer X32 and Asus PG32UQXR but both have half the zone count at 576 zones.
I think a lot of the mini led development has slowed down both because OLED is less expensive to produce and far less complicated in terms of development (no backlight, no local dimming algorithm, etc) but also the average consumer is really wow'd by OLED contrast.
I'm going to try and buy some of those other monitors to compare but they are all pretty expensive and I'm just a display hobbyist.

For a TV I love my mini LED but for a monitor I do prefer a OLED with little to no blooming
Yeah TV environment can be very different from a monitor. Many can't control the light in a living area where a TV is placed so the extra brightness helps to offset the ambient light.
I'd say it's the exact opposite, no burn-in or text on a TV with OLED being much brighter there.

They both have their benefits in drawbacks. Realistically, you can compare them side by side. Mini-LED is brighter and will affect how the OLED looks with how the camera and your eyes adjust. A mini-LED will perform better in a dark room. An OLED will have better contrast and deeper blacks that will allow for better dark content in the future. Apple's new iPad Pro OLED screen makes the old pro look blue. OLED is also better for your eyes. Most of the issues that have been pointed out about the Samsung seem to be software related and not the panel. These can be fixed by firmware updates. OLED has also has more potential.

The Mini LEDs TVS this year U8N , QM851 are insane stunning . They can do 144hz -4k gamming with AMD/Nvdia. WOLED--due to having ⬜️ 🟩🟦🟥 at all time, they have 1/3 Color DENSITY of LED. Because the Strong WHITE light MIX (instead of LED will TRANSFORM into color) WOLED MIX with color , n dilutes the light like no joke. they HIGHLY relying being DIM to boost Black blocks to creat aritficial IMPRESSION of high contrast. . MOST images are SEEN by COLOR/Highlight . a Spring morning day will 100% be more plesant eye than Cloudy day or in shadow behind tall building. in Dim visual, takes BRAIN longer to register What is What. so actually--DRASTICALLY slow down in BRAIN processing image can cause visual blur n slow down in judgement (from brain , what is hidden enemy or some aritfact) , which negates the whole reason buying fastest refreshrate or pc processing. --thats said by science professor debunking OLED/Plasma. since OLED so dim/ low in color even with black on some trims, most image looks grey , dim dull in shadow, lots visual blur. that OLED “best” is confirmation bias not at anyone’s fault but its getting de bunked now by premium Leds.
American company BOE just invented MORE premium LED screen called ADS-PRO. 180 degree viewing angle, full Gloss, 600hz screen refresh rate. 2X contrast ratio of typical ADS. I have seen it, its INSANE. they are putting in U9N UX , n 75” U8N U7N (TVS, gamming tvs). Samsung had it last year but they are Suing BOE this year so they dont get those premium Screens anymore. 😊

Got an OLED TV but sometimes I dislike the image, a lot. Like many bright daytime scenes never seem to look like... bright daytime. That bums the hell out of me. Then sometimes it looks spectacular, like something I've never seen before.
The other option was a VA-panel TV with a viewing angle of like 10 degrees :D I love my VA monitor, but on a TV the viewing angle seems to matter a lot more. I tried a 1500€ Sony one, and the amount of disbelief I was processing when I noticed the problem, was actually funny in hindsight :D
In conclusion - OLED is the only TV tech that is currently a viable option. Monitors - just stay clear of Samsung lol

Thank you. Yes I see blooming I think the blooming in dark scenes is acceptable given how bright it gets in every other scenario. Keep in mind that the blooming people recorded and documented in reviews when the Asus launched is not currently the case. It went through some firmware update or revision that completely changed how the local dimming behaves so it blooms far less now.
I should have bought the PG32UQX when it priced at 2500. Mini led is the way to go for HDR.

Cancelled my G80SD because of this, I've owned OLEDs before but I got caught up in the hype again. The dimness, VRR, and stutter at low frame rates is unbearable on console.

I’m really glad you’re shining light on this. So much of this scene is convinced that OLED is truly flawless but they’re just coping as they turn off that taskbar to prevent burn in. Furthermore, Sonys upcoming flagship is ditching QD-OLED for mini LED. If that’s not telling I don’t know what is. Both of these have quantum dots fyi
No, that's not telling whatsoever. Sony only makes TVs to my knowledge and that tech scene is different from monitors quite a lot.
Sony has a Inzone mini led monitor brand which uses a similar local dimming approach to their prior TV's (more focus on algorithm vs zone count). Eventually all of that flagship TV R&D will trickle down to their monitors when it becomes less cost prohibitive.
QD-OLED is fantastic. The new qd-oled monitors only go up to 400 nits on a 10% window, which is far inferior to qd-oled televisions. The only lcd's, imo, that can rival oled are ips. VA's have so many weird issues including ghosting and shitty viewing angles.

I set my monitor brightness to 101 cd/m². Anything higher and the monitor becomes eyestrain it is like you are looking directly at the sun burning your eyes.
I would rather have the significantly better pixel response time and deep blacks of OLED.
It’s all subjective. Your setting and everything make these side by side almost impossible to determine whether one is better than the other. Calibration is key in all of these examples.

Once PHOLEDs arrive oleds should get much brighter and more resistant to burn-in. I agree with you about the HDR experience, current oled monitors don't hold a candle to the mini-led monitors. However because of how good oleds motion clarity and input lag is I'll still stick with oled.
Also the qd-oled TVs are way brighter for HDR.
Looking forward to PHOLED but it looks to be quite a ways out for the desktop monitor market. Maybe late 2026.

Looks very impressive on paper but all of these mini-led monitors are at the mercy of their local dimming algorithms so even if it has 1100 zones and is capable of 1600nits, it means nothing if it crushes dark detail or the local dimming is inaccurate or slow.

i was using the pg32uqx but i upgraded to a samsung 8k qn700b. i do hope we get more miniled offerings, otherwise i fear we will have to wait 10 years or more for microled to become available.

The colors and overall imagine quality is much better on the oled, plus the 360 hz and the low response time are icing on the cake.

Regarding the miniLED monitor - what about when it's not in HDR mode, does the backlight still work?
For example productivity apps like Photoshop which have a darker background, is the backlight 100% on or if you would display a black image the zones there would be off like in HDR mode?
The backlight can be toggled on or off at any point.

@@agiverreviga4592 local dimming will automatically come on for HDR. In SDR, I leave local dimming off unless I'm gaming. The monitor has a memory so you can set how you like.
When I switch to SDR, local dimming shuts off. When I go to HDR it's enabled.

N later in Oct-Nov they release like A95L(QD-OLED)--made by Samsung .. N this year they didn’t show up once again cuz their line up can’t compete with EXTREME high end mini LED from (Google OS , not cheap Ass Roku ) Hisense TCL . 😅
The problem with the misconception of HDR is that many Internet users are mostly dirt poor. They cannot afford high-end monitors like the true HDR monitor PG32UQX and can only use lower-tier monitors from Korea, like Samsung or LG, which are stuck in SDR. Then they start to hallucinate about what dynamic range means. I told these guys that whatever monitor looks like real life is the PG32UQX, which can basically be a window into the real world. They don't even know what that means. When I first picked a QD-OLED like the AW3423DW and placed it next to my G-Sync powered backlight mini-LED monitors from PG27UQ, PG35VQ, and PG32UQX, the AW3423DW immediately looked like garbage in comparison. I keep telling them I always use monitors in a pitch-black room to enjoy the full benefit of 1500+ nits large window-sized HDR. They even thought I was an OLED user.
Yeah no question that the PG32UQX is expensive and well beyond what most people are willing to spend on a monitor but I'm not at all doing a best value HDR monitor comparison here. I'm just showing what I believe is the best gaming HDR monitor vs what everyone else seems to be yelling at the top of their lungs as the best (all of these OLED monitors). Even when considering price, the Samsung G80SD is an outlier with all these launch promotions because people are sniping PG32UCDM's the moment they're in stock at $1299 when its effectively identical in performance outside of matte vs glossy to this Samsung G80SD that can be had for $900-999 before even including Samsungs $300 promotion.
I personally don't think the $1750 that the PG32UQX goes on sale for is a huge stretch when you're already spending $1300 on a monitor. Besides that, monitors are a infrequent purchase for most. I'm not even going to get into OLED longevity but most hang onto monitors for 3-5 years so that price difference spread over 5 years of use is pretty insignificant in the grand scheme of things. If you're an enthusiast who really values HDR, its a no brainer.
But yeah, I agree with you. When it comes to HDR, the PG32UQX is unmatched. Especially this later version that seems to have a much more refined local dimming algorithm. I'm going to try some of these other mini led monitors soon but I don't have high hopes because they have no hardware Gsync module doing all the work.
The problem is I feel like I'm speaking to an audience who are 50% sweaty esports players so image quality, resolution, HDR, etc are all generally irrelevant to them or at least very low priority. The only aspect of image quality they tend to value is motion clarity and outside of image quality, input lag. Those are both areas where these 240/360hz OLED's excel so I understand the discourse but this isn't an attack on their preference. It's just my opinions.

Esports players use TN panels because they can still be faster, brighter, and more useful than short-lived OLEDs. The monitor audience won't change until they get out of impoverishment, and that won't happen anytime soon. So don't expect the internet to understand because they cannot even see HDR or compete in esports. The best thing to do is to use all available tools to make SDR into HDR1400 to enjoy content in a way no one else can. Life is short. There is little point in spending or even wasting time on the internet trying to convince the audience.
We can also tell your a fanboy. Fact is there's monitors out there under the PG32UQX that can do well in HDR. Also to believe just because it cost the most doesn't mean its going to perform the best.

I though the same. I hava a Samsung G6 and an Oled. The change is good, buy brightnes is not. I think that people feel that change, that big cause jumpo from lcd IPS to an Oled. From VA with zone or mini led, to Oled, It feels great, but is not that big. At least in many scenarios.
You mentioned the innocn 32mv, how different is that compared to the asus since its is a more compelling budget option with similar specs? Would you choose the qd oled over the innocn?
The Innocn's local dimming is significantly worse and its even more smeary than the Asus in motion. For most people its probably just fine but those are 2 big cons other than the at times buggy behavior.

This is just the camera due to the PG32UQX being so much brighter even when I handicapped it to just 1000nits. In person the highlights retain all their detail. I'm getting a new camera to better demonstrate these monitors.

10:10 is the Asus clipping or that's just how it looks being that it gets much brighter? The rocks are completely blown out no detail in the middle, same for waterfall. The shadowed cave in the left also looks better on the OLED thanks to the contrast. I use a C2 in a dim room but with fairly bright bias lighting to avoid eye strain as well as because in HDR bright games absolutely get bright enough. I really wouldn't want more luminance from a display unless I was always using it in a lit room which for gaming I try to avoid.
LCDs and miniLEDs are dead tech imo unless you absolutely need 2000 nits highlights and full field. OLED is a nice stop gap unless microLED.

@@mertk.3386 Talk about what? The Samsung has more contrast, the Asus is brighter and even that doesn't cover up the massive gap in contrast. You can also pause at any point in the race and see how much blurrier the LCD is with the slower pixel response. I don't know what fps the game is getting but even if the OLED was match to 144fps to be equal to the Asus its still not even close. By all means if all you care about is brightness get an LCD monitor, but as far as mini-LED FALD monitors go that have a dimming algorithm as good as this Asus you can count on one hand, slim pickings.
It's just the camera. The Asus retains far more highlight detail especially in games with ridiculous HDR implementations like the original Horizen Zero Dawn that is mastered to 10000nits.
i have an OLED and a mini LED display for an year, for comparison in movies, hdr or sdr, doesn't matter, oled always win. For me any technology than OLED will have like a little fog on the image, i don't know how to say in words what i see.
All consumer OLED tvs exhibit black crush. Monitors are even worse with both black crush AND poor EOTF tracking above shadow detail. OLED is only great for SDR.

I've been trying out all the new monitors coming out, I've tried ultrawides qd oleds, woleds, and a bunch of va and ips monitors, the one i ended up keeping is the new 4k qd-oled Alienware 240hz and honestly i love it, but I've always seen tvs at Best buy with amazing brightness so i always feel like the monitors could do better. I never tried a mini led monitor before but I've been wanting to, i think this is my sign to get one, I'll get this asus monitor and decide which one to keep definitely. I love playing competitive titles and single player titles and i don't know if im going to like going back to 144hz 🤔

@@SolaceinScrutiny okay yesterday I retuned the pg32uqx, definitely would've kept it 3 years ago, brightness is great but the clarity and fluidity of the qd oleds its just too good and also the per pixel illumination just shines when it comes to HDR, now I'm gonna try that new glossy Asus woled.
If you really have to record in stereo, do you know how easy it is to copy and paste the audio track over to the other channel? Either that or just record in mono. People really need to learn to double check their uploads because a simple thing like this makes a video so much less watchable.

How does the PG32UQX compare to the Neo G8 mini led in your opinion? I've been really disappointed by HDR performance in these OLED monitors and unless they can provide a somewhat comparable experience come next year I'll probably end up nabbing a miniled.
Neo G8 is pretty mediocre IMO. Its two biggest issues are that it just doesn't get bright enough and the color volume is poor. It looks really washed out next to the PG32UQX. Also I'm not a fan of its local dimming because it can appear really cloudy in dark scenes.
Yeah these OLED monitors are just too compromised but hopefully we'll see some advances in 2025/2026. There is such a massive difference between the 55" S90D and 32" G80SD. I mean the TV's 25% window brightness is 2x what the monitors is.

Yes its down to local dimming algorithm and implementation. The Neo G8 sacrifices too much to minimize bloom to the point where its literally a worse version of these QD-OLED in almost every way. Its like Samsung went out of their way to try and create a LCD OLED by chasing contrast and contrast only.
It's only marginally brighter full field and otherwise gets similarly bright in content in the 1-10% range, exhibits VRR flicker, has far worse colors, worse pixel response (though in practice the difference is pretty minor), horrible viewing angles and you get horizontal scan lines at 240hz.
Its only real advantage other than the 60nit or so full field brightness advantage is that its not as prone to burn in and that's not a typo because these CSOT panels will suffer from permeant image retention as seen here:

Is the g9 57" a good mini-led monitor? The ppi is very good and the 240fps too, but I am worried about the panel type. It has 2k+ dimming zones, but I don't know about the algorithm and the surface is still huge there.
I think its okay. The local dimming behavior is both an improvement from the Neo G8 and regression in that it lingers illuminated zones too long.
The biggest issue with that monitor like the Neo G8 is that the colors are poor and viewing angles horrendous. No matter where you position your head, either the sides or top or bottom loses saturation because of those poor viewing angles. If you can position it far enough away this is mitigated a bit but still there.
The other big issue is that when you enable HDR, it has diagonal scan lines. That is the #1 deal breaker for that monitor to me personally because I can see the weird crosshatch pattern even in games.

I think this burning eyes thing is a misconception. When you go outside and look at the glare of the sun off a cars paint, that is 5000nits+ so a monitors brightness relative to what you're eyes manage every day is insignificant. The monitor is never too bright, in fact it should be brighter to handle content mastered at 4000 and 10000nits. Just keep in mind that its level of brightness is not some arbitrary flashbang, if the content demands 1200nits over a 25% screen area, it will provide that. When the content demands sub 5nits, that's what you get.
This burning eyes thing is a real physical concept. The company Barco which is a reputed cinema screen manufacturer has conducted some tests in the previous decade with a giant experimental MICRO-LED cinema display to quantify how much luminance would become unbearable for the audience inside of a classic pitch dark movie theatre and they concluded that it was around 500 nits in those circumstances.
When you go outside on a bright day even a matte paint on a concrete wall directly facing the sun could be 15,000 nits , and a bright car paint could even hit 100,000 nits.
However a retina has its own dynamic range tolerance which is why almost every species has an iris which works exactly the same as camera aperture aimed at controlling the amount of luminance that could go through in order to avoid brightness saturation or worse, damaging the sensor or the iris. Given the eye works in a logarithmic way we won't see too much difference between 5,000 and 70,000 unlike the difference between 100 and 200 nits which is highly noticeable to us.
In a brightly lit environment such as sunny day, this very same iris will shrink in order to target that limited amount of dynamic range towards the brighter shades as the eye won't be able (and usually won't need) to see some deep dark shades anymore like the inside of a pipe.
On the flipside, at night, the iris will extend, allowing the eye to aim for the lower shades of brightness but will totally dazzle if something really bright suddenly appears, this is why we also get temporary dazzled when coming out from a dark room to the outside on a sunny day as the iris has now to expose the retina to the brighter shades.
In the case of a bright display like a full blown MINI LED in a completely pitch black room, the eye is suddenly facing two contradictory types of exposition as the iris doesn't know if it should adapt to the room or to the display which causes the dazzling effect IF and only if the display is bright enough to the point that it exceeds that retina's dynamic range tolerance. The monitor could get too bright which is why Dolby decided to cap HDR10 PQ at 10,000 nits after experimenting on a 32" highly experimental Mini LED TV a little more than a decade ago.
Now I wonder if that Asus MiniLED is already able to hit that threshold or if we still have a more head room in the case of a pitch black room environment.
I think a simple bias light behind the display (like I use) mitigates this quite a bit and also increases perceived contrast. I personally have no issue in terms of eye comfort with the Asus especially when you consider that this isn't a massive cinema display that is at a constant 500nits full field. It momentarily pushes 10-25% window size highlights for seconds at a time and does 50-75% at 1000nits+ for quick bursts.
@@SP95You can always set the brightness lower on a mini-LED. Can't increase brightness of an OLED which will always be dim outside of highlights.
🔆I think oled will be eventually be the end game when it gets dual stack oled panels, fullscreen 1000nits is needed. I only started to think iPad’s brightness is enough for me this year when it got the tandem oled, and it is noticeable and better than the fullscreen 600nits miniled iPad Pro from before, now its SDR can go up to 1000nits. Also the miniled MacBook Pro is the same for me, I use vivid app to unlock extra brightness during the day to get fullscreen 1000nits (somehow even bright than the 1000nits SDR oled, I think macOS’ EDR might have mapped it to more than 1000nits, and I always find my external monitor which is 400nits too dim during the day, and ok at night. But the way, I have bias lights for my monitor, plenty of lights behind desk, white light strips behind the monitors with adjustable color temp (Nanoleaf but only use whites) and benq screen bar. There is a decent amount of light during the day. I don’t have exposed direct light sources, but I keep my desk environment relatively bright to reduce eye strain or any potential damage, also room just looks nicer with well lit functional lights.

In that VRR flicker segment, the right isn't mini led, its the LG 32GS95UE WOLED from my other video which crushes dark detail really bad. The Samsung is far better calibrated out of the box.

I mean, that's what the mini-LED would do in scenes like that as well. It's either black crush or overblown surroundings with gray shadows. IPS isn't the way to go with mini-LED, not until IPS Black becomes mainstream and you'll still need more zones than 1100.
I'm sorry if anyone asked this before, but have you tested X32FP? How does it stack against PG32UQX? I have a potentially pretty good deal, so I would like to get some information from someone clearly well-versed in mini-led panels!
The blooming will be more noticeable due to half the zones. Pixel response is better though so you shouldn't have noticeable smearing. It's about 50% of the way to the PG32UQX so if you can get a good deal it could be worth it.
