This is really cool! But what are you using as the base to put the glass on, and what is the thing that's on the top with the nut. And what runs through the center to hold it all together. I love it, but I'm just seeing the fuel source, the glass, and the mantel explained. I need to know the middle part. Thanks

You should use a wing nut instead of the hex to fasten the top together for ease of replacement. Do you have a hood for that lantern for use outside? I feel that if you wanted to use it for camping you would want to make sure the mantle is shielded from falling precipitation. It would also shield your hand from the heat if you wanted to mount a handle on top, instead of trying to carry it by the base.

A Lot of Vowels A wing nut would be nice, but the selection of small metric stainless steel nuts at the hardware store is small. There is no hood, I suppose something like that would be a good idea, but I can carry it without burning my hand. It dose not put out all that much heat.

clkindred I can certainly appreciate the lack of hardware on the wing nut front. You could also consider making a clip with a hook of some kind, or some kind of quick release clamp. The more thought you put in at the shop will save you time in the field.

Could you possible show a tutorial of how to make those?

I need to try this cutting the coleman mantle as the double tie's are to damn expensive..
People that are afraid to mess with fire should avoid it, your nervousness will cause you to make mistakes.

I think that is very sharp. I think i would make a bale that cradles the canister though, i bet that chain get crazy hot.

ok 2 questions....isn't the heat output too hot to be so close to the shelf??? AND, why is Giorgio in there where he is I am not making the connection! Not that I don't think he is great, but what am I missing??? lol

Awharry36 The heat output is not bad with this thing, it gets very hot to the touch, but I can hold it hanging by the chain by hand with no problems.
I don't know the guy's name, only that there is an internet joke involving that screen grab, along with a phrase along the lines of "I'm not saying it was aliens, but it was aliens" So my usage of the joke was suggesting the light in the corner of the video was aliens.

What did you use for the on/off/regulator valve?

+clkindred Oh, I see how that can work with butane, but I tried it with liquid fuel and had flooding on the floor, more restriction and an expansion/volatilization area is needed, like you showed in your pump alcohol stove video.

The only thing I'd recommend is burning it outside. Lanterns and stoves give off carbon monoxide. Best used in well-ventilated areas.

      Correct.

@@clkindred Incorrect. When burning clean, these are not an issue for CO. If they were all of our grandsires would have died and no one would use natural gas or propane stoves and ranges in their homes.
