Jeff, on your cables, they are referred to as a push pull cable or a Morris control cable also referred to his boat control cables, there is a cable inside that’s got a plastic liner around the cable. If the cable moves freely back-and-forth then usually there’s nothing wrong with the cable, I have had hundreds of these cables made by Broadway splicing, in Spokane Washington, there are many different variations to the ends, I usually draw a picture of each end and give them cable travel, and the overall length , and any other lengths that I can supply them, the price you quoted in the video from the one outfit you were talking about sounds very reasonable, but I would absolutely not give anybody a picture of my credit card, if they can’t take the numbers over the phone, don’t do it ,also never use a debit card over the phone because debit cards don’t have the same protection that a credit card has.

Been a heavy truck tech since 88 and been in the same shop 4 the past 20 years was the young guy when I started now I’m the grumpy old guy my go to tool and advice to the kids is get ur self a really good air hammer and a good assortment of bits 😂really admire ur persistence of clean that’s a lost art among the young generation
I too need to use air hammers more. Very powerful and useful tools for breaking and vibrating things loose. South Main Auto in New York has taught me that thru their videos.
I always had a lot of success by doing the following. Tighten up your chain wrench with a little 1/2 ton com-a-long, then take your two or four pound hammer all around the nut. It usually comes loose with the shock of the hammer blows!
Jeff, Loctite makes two primers. Primer T comes in a yellow can and is very fast acting. Primer n comes with green printing on the container and is not as time sensitive. It also accelerates the cure time. Now here is the important part, If you are assembling parts , fasteners or whatever that has no ferrous component, you really should use one of those primers as they have that catalyst that you mentioned that makes the Loctite work. So you either need the primer or one part needs to have some ferrous component, or your results will be spotty at best. Loctite also says that a bit of oil will not stop the cure. Most Loctites will break down at temperatures above 350F. There are a few that are good to 400 F. Another great gap filler they make is called QuickMetal. It will not act like Epoxy but it will fill gaps as long as it is contained. Which means you cannot use it like a putty or Taryl's stuff. Your sanding the OD of that seal allowed the Loctite to see the ferrous component and then start to cure, which is why it was a good thing to do. Keep up the good work! I feel your pain I worked on a lot of Galion cranes older ones like yours some had V8 IH gas engines that we converted to Cummings when they went bad you are doing a great job on the repairs 👍🏻🇺🇲

I have a few brass punches and a 1” round stock. My inner self wants to deck anyone using a screwdriver for anything but turning screws. Isn’t it amazing what the harmonic vibrations from a air chisel can do! One use I’ve found effective is clevis pins on a brake chamber, start vibrating it with the air chisel ( not to the point of destroying it) and you’ll get a cloud of rust and the pin will start rotating in the clevis. Those threads will hold fine, they will only see pressure in the retracted position. As many cylinders as you do, you really need to build your own cylinder bench. I use the word bench loosely. I built a holding fixture out of a old man lift boom, works great. Adjustable to any length cylinder, only takes up 8’x16’ of yard space, lug it in with the forklift when you need to use it. Thank you for your efforts and the video’s.
Used to rebuild the cylinders on Army bridge launchers. The cylinders had threaded heads like yours. We had a large pipe that went over the rod and rod eye, had bolts that screwed into the spanner holes and had a large socket welded to a plate on the opposite end. Used an very large impact wrench on this rig, seems like the impact worked better on rusty threads than smooth torque.
I would call that chain turnout chain tongs. Used one a lot in windmill work (pumping water). They can do your head in but when you get them on the right way they work well then you can’t get them off because it is so well gripped on there. .I use a card that normally has nothing on it till I want to buy something over the phone or on the internet. They can’t rip you off for everything in that account that way. Jeff.
Put it in your press….. press the flat end on the cylinder in the press, use a jack stand to support the cylinder. Now you can tighten or loosen to your desire!
Air hammer work great! The hydraulic lines to a cement mixers drive motor are 1-1/2" and about impossible to remove with a wrench without busting the tubeing nipple that is brazed into the motor. Put a flat point punch in an air hammer and tap on the crown of the wrench flat in the direction you need it to turn . . . It zaps them suckers right loose, then use an adjustable wrench to remove. The first time I saw this I was like "No effing way that worked!" Seen it a thousand times now and it ALLWAYS works no matter how tight and rusted the fitting is.
Jeff, I hope I can give you a little help for the cable need. The description of the cable is a Morse Cable. An aftermarket company the makes compatible parts to build them is Wescon. My old leads to have cables like that are running out. The last similar custom cable I had ordered came from a Truckpro store in Oklahoma City. I had been able to get them built out of a sister shop in Odessa TX.
Those cables look just like the control cable on a cement mixer truck Mcnealus or Oshkosh garbage trucks use them to maybe one of them can copy them. Hope that helps.have a great day.😊

Hi Jeff when I need to purchase something on the internet and I'm not comfortable about giving my credit card I have a prepaid credit card that I got from Walmart. I just go load as much money on it as I need for that one purchase give them that information. That way they have the phones to pay for the purchase and nothing else.
to bust our ram glands loose we put a big pin through the barrel eye drive a machine up onto it then use a track hoe on the pipe wrench . We have a very bent 48in ridgid pipe wrench from it
Have you looked at FP Smith Equipment and Parts in California? They have quite a bit of stuff. They had some new old stock case parts that i couldn't even find in used. Might be worth a try... They sent my parts, both times that day, I'm on the east coast.
Heat it and tap all around the thread area with a ball peen hammer to carefully stretch the metal just a fraction. Ya also air hammer if you got one. 3 jaw engine hone works pretty good in a pinch. Cables, aren't those the same as the big morse cables used in boats? or are the ends radically different.

Has all the books and parts from early 1900’s etc if interested try to look for the address! He said when talking to him he was going to retire and shut down soon… shame cause he makes custom cable for rebuilds matching old with new and for length!

That crane is lucky to be owned by Jeff. Some people would do the bare minimum to get it working for a job or two and park it, rather than going through a lot of the machine and overhauling it, as well as fixing all the mistakes previous owners did.
