One of the best singles of the 80's criminally underrated. Enjoyed your reaction.

When Claudia starts singing "In joyless lanes we walk in line..." in that warm, tempting, embracing, a bit gutteral and frigthening and very complex voice (and she was just a merely 20 year old girl fresh out of german "Gymansium") all memories are back and I admit I have to shed a tear or two for all the days gone as there is "Kein Zurück für dich!" (Dr. Mabuse). Damn, I had a crush on her and still her looks, expression and voice mesmerize me.
BTW loved your reaction. Some background to understand that IMHO very matching video. Dörper wanted to write a song about past german movie milestones like "Dr. Mabuse" and "Metropolis". P(ropaganda)-Machinery is about "Metropolis". In short: a moloch city is devided into the upper town (rich people) and the under town (in fact below earth). Easy to guess: the under town people has to work for the upper town people / class, which lives in luxury whereas the poor people just work as soulless creatures in ever repeating and stupid work schemes and are kind of savoured by the machines they work on / for. So... the three (Dörper, Mertens, Freytag) guys in business suits on strings are the modern (80's) version of this workforce. Remember chinese "ant suits" during Mao time, it's simply an uniform and destinction for lower class worker, just existing for the upper class' luxury. They walk "endlessly", joyless, a calm (no riots, no feelings, no emotions) and steady, never running dry of new workers till the strength of the individual runs low.
Brücken in her white dress reflects the upper class, the next generation, the "Club of Sons". She lukewarmly brushes "her workers" as if she cares for them. Her dress (the feathery balls on both sides of her shoulders match perfect her haircut!) is the bridge to the roaring 20's, and she's presenting luxury goods, and with the sweetest but fake smile she got she reveals the obscured, deadly snake (there's no friendship in the upper class, despite they feast in luxury they are still grudging each other). I don't know if she was told to smile that way and performs acting or if that's her natural smile, remember, she was an unexperienced young girl. While she enjoys hunting butterflies and carelessly rolling around in her bed the working class - still stringed to the "machine" - provides her with everything she needs, she even picks their flower without even wasting a thought, perhaps even ignoring and destroying their hardly existing emotions ("picking the flower", a german allegory for you-know-what). She's wasting the champagne, she could have shared a tiny part of her luxury with the workers, but... better waste than share with these scumbacks, oopsie! "What common sense denies"... the upper class is going even further, harnessing a human to a horse, why? Because they can. Because perversities don't gross them out anymore.
In the end the puppeteers are shown, the guys that are controlling everything, even the butterflies the upper class enjoys. Who is there, on top? So, look up, be aware of who and what is controlling you, know that you are nothing but a slave, recognizing your chains is the first step to freedom! Don't trust propaganda (the swinging puppets with the books), break free by... cutting the lines. The final take of Claudia *snip*.
Claudia's role may be that of Metropolit Freder, an upper town son conneting to the under town Maria who wanted to break through the lies and seek for truth. I don't recall the movie exactly but I think there was no liberation of the masses, so the final "cut the line" did not happen.
The lulling melody, the lyrics and the video match. As the quartett grew up around Ratinger Straße / Ratinger Hof, the bohemian side of Düsseldorf and Claudia told in an interview they had lots of connections to the art scene I think it's fair to assume there's something behind that video!
That video, that music and the lyrics are very prevailing. I don't remember an 80's song that made it good through to today without a single wrinkle, not even a crow's feet. Sidenote: both girls aged almost as well!

That's an excellent analogy. What I like about A Secret Wish is the German "edginess" it has. An undertone of it's OK to not be happy runs through everything. 1234 is sonically good too though a 180 degree turn from A Secret Wish. I keep hearing the 1234 vocals like they got Olivia Newton John to sing. I mean very good emotions, but nice. Who the hell want's that? LOL.

🤣 Couldn’t stop cracking up seeing your expressions to the video which is close to 40 years old and still looks futuristic. I remember the first time seeing this video I was tripped out when the part with the dancing red chair came up 😮 Still trips me out even though I’ve seen the video many times. The song is also an epic synthpop masterpiece with production values that blow away anything put up against it from present day music. Along with Kraftwerk this is an excellent example of German technical prowess in regard to studio production and innovation.

Trevor Horn knew how to produce TF out of a New Wave tune in that era. I actually got to see Propaganda live at the 9:30 Club in DC with Derek Forbes from Simple Minds on Bass. They sounded as good as the recordings. It was unreal. "A Secret Wish" is my #2 Album from 1985 and the layers upon layers of Fairlight CMI sampled orchestrations are some of the best arrangements of that era.

From the mid-80's when I first heard this it has been one of my favorite songs, and the video is one of my favorites. That whole album is fantastic and you should give it a lsiten. Two standouts are the Murder of Love, and Dr. Mabuse - both are great. Funny thing about the video, back in the 80's i9t was hard seeing videos especially for German avant garde sythpop bands, but there was a place in Seattle at the time that had a New Wave Video night and a friend told me it was one of the videos that they ran. My friend and I tried for months to go, but we kept getting the nights wrong. We hit Rastafarian night, we hit lesbian night - twice, but we never actually got to New Wave Video night.

Produced by Trevor Horn (Frankie goes to Hollywood), great German singers, among the musicians ex Simple Minds members. That says it all. Monster hit. Period.

That's the reaction I like ...... staple for Us club goers, back in the day! WE ..... danced to this, at BIG CITY industrial club in York, PA. This IS machinery AT .... it's BEST! The Tech sound, off the charts ...... powerful, imaginary, industrial, ..... revolutionary in it's time ..... Claudia Brücken (lead singer) so captivating!

Bought A Secret Wish when it came out in 1985 and never stopped playing it since. My favourite album of all time.

Depeche Mode and other European bands switched their sound to a colder and more industrial sound in the first half of the 80s. I had that vinyl record and it inspired me to develop an art project in my studies. I played "Dr. Mabuse" during my Master of Arts and Design training.
BTW, on Wikipedia they readily give the label "Synth-pop" and "New Wave" to any song from the eighties.... Maybe it's suitable for songs like "Duel", beautiful and great song, on the same album but I would label "p.Machinery" as electronic pop with strokes of industrial music.

This was produced by Trevor Horn and Stephen Lipson. Propaganda's second studio album was produced by Ian Stanley and Chris Hughes. Ian was a member of Tears For Fears for their first three albums. Chris was the producer for the first two Tears For Fears albums. I usually listen to the Razormaid remix of the song. Dr. Mabuae and Dual are must listen songs by Propaganda.

If you liked this song you must hear the entire album. There's nothing else quite like it.

The best band that you never heard of.
A Secret Wish was an astonishing album, and remains on my top twenty albums of all time, even 40 years later.
Claudia is a great singer, so make sure you do a live one next.
The album 1234 was also excellent, a different line up, but very underrated.
Betsi was a lovely singer too, and I can thoroughly recommend Wound In My Heart as a good track to react to.
    More Propaganda please.
    Or Marillion.
    Or Lacuna Cool.
