What a fantastic song and geat memory of dancing to this.. I havent heard it in years. The 7 minutes fly by. I remember when Enigma first came-out and I couldn't believe it. It was amazing new concept in music for me. I have been a loving fan ever since.
Europe has always had some cutting edge dance, trance, house, and club music. I've always loved trance and listen to down tempo chill music (psybient, psybient chill). The beats are soothing for programming, or deep data analysis. I use out as a meditating tool too.
Check out Androcell: Seahorse Dreams, Carbon Based Lifeforms: Central Plain. I have a healthy sized playlist on Spotify. Lots of European soundscape talent.
The Psybient genre of trance is all about dropping mushrooms and tripping. I get high and listen to it all the time.
Great tune and reaction. Thanks for doing something off beat. Check out The KLF: 3AM Eternal for another cool electronic band from the 80s. Came out around the same time as Enigma and not as chill. I think. I don't remember a lot of the 80s. Or early 90s.

I'm not going into details (google him yourself, please, if you want), but the tales of his ... let's call them "romantic escapades", shall we? ... gave birth to the concept and term of "Sadism". Yep, *that* stuff. Research at your own peril. 🙂

Mea Culpa and The Rivers Of Belief are two other highlights on the album. Love how they incorporated those Gregorian chants. You did your usual excellent job of describing the mood of the song, Salvo. The Marquis de Sade, (pronounced Mar-KEE da Sod), was a French writer, (among other things), whose characters often engaged in painful sexual practices, leading to the term Sadism--i.e., S & M--being named for him. Kinda puts an extra twist on the tune, lol.

One of my favorite albums, ever. It was so different, mixing the sacred and the profane (and the old and the new) in a totally new way, and it was sensual and downtempo. In this song, the Latin chants are sacred church songs, and the French text questioning Sade represents the profane. The Marquis (mar-kee) was a French political activist and nobleman, famous for his libertine novels, but was also imprisoned for sex crimes, blasphemy and pornography. In French, she repeatedly asks: "Sade, tell me; Sade, give me." The male voice asks: "Sade, tell, me: What do you seek? Good by the way of Evil? Virtue via Vice? Sade, tell me: Why this Gospel of Evil? What is your religion; where are your followers? If you're against God, you're against Man. Sade, tell me: why do you need blood to experience pleasure? Pleasure without love. Does emotion no longer exist within the cult of Man? Sade, are you diabolical or divine?" (my own translation). Anything from the first three or four of albums is great.

I've always loved Enigma. Lots of variety in one track. Perfect relaxing sound and I love vocal in French added in.

I literally had a cassette tape with *only* Gregorian monks chanting 😅 The early 90s were a vibe lol.

It's amazing how the Euro late 80s/early 90s skip beat was a hit in the clubs. Between this song and Sybil's cover of Dionne Warwick's "Don't Make Me Over", this sound dominated the scene. This song was the jam, though!

The Marquis de Sade does have a wiki entry if you want to know more about him. There is also a movie called Quill starring Geoffrey Rush as the Marquis. He is the person after whom the terms sadist and sadism were coined.

I remember listening to this album a lot as a young adult/ college student. The next album was also pretty good too.

MCMXC a.D. , the album title, is 1990 in Roman numerals. And the Marquis de Sade is a French noble, author, and philosopher (of a very specific sort). His name lends itself to the term for one who derives sexual satisfaction from inflicting pain on another -- sadism.

This song has always been so entrancing to me, since I first heard it back in the 90s. Just the combination of everything; the chants, the sexy French whisper, the woodwind sounding melody... chef's kiss. Moby did a lot of experimental stuff around this time, too, if you're interested. My faves are Porcelain, South Side (with Gwen Stefani - check her out, too), and We Are All Made of Stars - a song he wrote in the wake of 9/11 after he was stuck in his New York City apartment for days following the attacks.

Not sure why they didn't have you react to the music video along with the official single edit version. Enigma have 8 albums. All are brilliant.

I hope you watch the video for the single, it's so cool. I played it quite a bit when I was DJ'ing at the club. And I was on the floor when it got played when I wasn't working. Everybody in a chill groove. They had a second Top 10 hit off their next album with "Return To Innocence" that had a sort of mystical Native Indian feel. Should check that one out.
