This was also a big hit, in the USA, when it hit the airwaves back in the summer of 1990 (MCMXC a.D.), followed by Return To Innocence, when it also released.
Hundreds ?! They only have eight albums and some compilations .I doubt there are more than 150 official songs released.Yes,there are a lot of songs that tried to copy the original Enigma sound, but these are not created by Cretu.
Finally! Dereck made his first step into another world. The next song should be Return To Innocence (from second Enigma's album "The Cross OF Changes).
Michael Cretu is the greatest Alchemist in music. He mixes pop music with Gregorian chants, Sanskrit chants, Mongolian throat singing, Japanese flute music and a little bit of Opera. He doesn't care about popularity but makes music he wants to make.
All Enigma's videos are religious/occultic visual artistry, because their music is religious, occultic and atmospheric. (I'm not using the world occultic in the negative sense here.) Michael Cretu took bits of music and instruments from different cultures and fused them. In 1990, it was different from something we've ever heard before, original and unique. In 2023, it still is. And yes, back then our DJs played it in the clubs.
This was big in Australia and brings back so many memories. Also love Return to Innocence. Memories of my ex husband, who I still love, just in a different way now. But it was so magical at the time!!
Michael Cretu used a lot of samples for his first two Enigma albums. Gregorian chant is a sample so as drum section, I think. Also it's Sandra whispering on this one. Late 80s and early 90s were the time when sampling came into play for many solo musicians and artists. And yes it was played a lot in clubs in early 90s and you could hear that song in many films in early 90s.
Whether the song is better or not it's off course personal taste, and it wouldn't be mine. But a fact is, that return to innocence is not part 2. It is either a) principles of lust - find love (on the album), b) mea culpa (officially called part 2 back in the days) , or c) the actual "Sadeness Part II" from 2016.
The sound of the 90's delivered at the beginning of the 90's (1990). Mylène Farmer uses a lot of pipes on her album Ainsi soit-je (1988) and has a two songs that could be connected to Sadness - part 1 : Vieux bouc (1986) and Agnus Dei (1991).
Gregorian Chant was big in the early 90s. I worked at a record store in college, in the early 90s, and we sold a LOT of Gregorian Chant albums. We had them all in a specific section of the store, that was for "World Music." Enigma was a big seller, as well. For some reason, Gregorian Chant was a big hit here in the U.S. and we sold a LOT of it!
This song is one of my favorites ever and I find it groundbreaking in many ways 👍. Musically, it was so different from anything you've heard before. Just the idea of mixing Gregorian chants with the Marquis de Sade theme and the arrangement with a shakuhachi flute sound and that beat is so unusual and yet so unique. Being from Germany, I am proud of Enigma, especially Michael Cretu and Sandra who have been successful in their own way before and it was so smart yet so easy of Cretu to have his vision and find the right people for it. It's logical, why try different voices when your own wife has the most suitable voice for this music? The result was a huge success worldwide. Especially in America, it's still one of the most successful albums of all time. It's really rare that German record productions sell so well, and with a sound that is anything but mainstream. Hats off 👏.
Dereck, The Marquis de Sade is a man of letters, novelist and French philosopher who lived under the reign of Louis XVI, long doomed to anathema because of the part given in his literary work to eroticism and pornography, associated with acts of violence and cruelty (torture, sodomy, rape, murder, etc.). The expression of virulent anticlerical atheism is one of the most recurring themes of his writings and the one which has mainly resulted in him spending the greater part of his life in prison. Fun fact: It's from his name that the word "sadism" was derived. That's all for today folks 🤐
Beyond the invisible is so great, the way it builds to the refrain and even then within the refrain it even tops itself more and more. Return to innocence always was too cheesy, too good vibes for me 🙂

Very sexy song. When it first came out, it was featured in a bunch of movies, especially during love scenes. One standout was "Boxing Helena," very strange movie but they use this song very well.
Soooo good! In case you want to know the lyrics: "Sade, tell me, what are you looking for? Good in evil? Virtue in vice? Sade, tell me, why evangelize evil?
