Big hit in France 🇫🇷 as well ! In French because the song refers to the sulfurous Marquis de Sade. But i also much prefer 'return to innocence'. 👐

Michael Cretu used a lot of samples for his first two Enigma albums. Gregorian chant is a sample so as drum section, I think. Also it's Sandra whispering on this one. Late 80s and early 90s were the time when sampling came into play for many solo musicians and artists. And yes it was played a lot in clubs in early 90s and you could hear that song in many films in early 90s.

Whether the song is better or not it's off course personal taste, and it wouldn't be mine.
But a fact is, that return to innocence is not part 2.
It is either a) principles of lust - find love (on the album), b) mea culpa (officially called part 2 back in the days) , or c) the actual "Sadeness Part II" from 2016.

This song is one of my favorites ever and I find it groundbreaking in many ways 👍. Musically, it was so different from anything you've heard before. Just the idea of mixing Gregorian chants with the Marquis de Sade theme and the arrangement with a shakuhachi flute sound and that beat is so unusual and yet so unique. Being from Germany, I am proud of Enigma, especially Michael Cretu and Sandra who have been successful in their own way before and it was so smart yet so easy of Cretu to have his vision and find the right people for it. It's logical, why try different voices when your own wife has the most suitable voice for this music? The result was a huge success worldwide. Especially in America, it's still one of the most successful albums of all time. It's really rare that German record productions sell so well, and with a sound that is anything but mainstream. Hats off 👏.

If you are against man you are against God. Sade, are you diabolical or divine?" A beautiful mix of the sensual divine and the sensual erotic... Hi Dereck. This song I remember like it was yesterday! You could hear that everywhere on the radio or on TV! it was a "UFO" for the time. Mixing Gregorian chants and pop, new age music was really out of the ordinary. This is what has pleased a lot of people I think all over the world.
Proof in France, I remember it very well it was no.1 for 5 consecutive weeks in the TOP 50 (sold 385'000 copies in France,Gold Disc) in 1990, it was madness!!
I knew pretty quickly that the female voice was from Sandra. Behind this project was also hiding her husband and producer Michael Cretu and two other people. I had read that in the music section of a TV program She has French origins from her father I know.
Even though she speaks French, you can sense a foreign accent. And the young girl (a model from Toulouse, South of France aged 17 at the time) we see in the videoclip is to replace the German female singer who at the time didn't want to appear and wanted to take a little break in her solo career.
The song has become so much of a "classic" that it has been used in many movies and TV series all over the world.
At the end of 1993, Michael cretu set the scene again but this time with Taiwanese songs and a male singer with lyrics in English on the other hand and of course Sandra with the song "Return To Innocence" from the album The Cross Of Changes and will be the most famous title of this album.
Thanks for your amazing work our American dude. 👍

Very sexy song. When it first came out, it was featured in a bunch of movies, especially during love scenes. One standout was "Boxing Helena," very strange movie but they use this song very well.

    Dereck,
The Marquis de Sade is a man of letters, novelist and French philosopher who lived under the reign of Louis XVI, long doomed to anathema because of the part given in his literary work to eroticism and pornography, associated with acts of violence and cruelty (torture, sodomy, rape, murder, etc.). The expression of virulent anticlerical atheism is one of the most recurring themes of his writings and the one which has mainly resulted in him spending the greater part of his life in prison.
Fun fact: It's from his name that the word "sadism" was derived.
That's all for today folks 🤐

I also recommend reacting to Michael Cretu solo stuff (the founder and idealogical leader of project Enigma!) and also him together with Tissy Thiers! Songs worth listening to are my personal favorites, but you might wanna start with Wild River! One of his most mesmerizing songs imho! Other great songs are - Samurai, great instrumental piece called - Mikado and Coda as it's intro (i recommend looking for an extended version that has Coda and Mikado glued together in one epic transtion!), Crazy Life, Gambit, Am i Alone, Mona Lisa, Cretu and Thiers - Waterfall (very slow, but very mesmerizing!), Cretu And Thiers - Snowing Under My Skin (another mesmerizing piece!), Cretu And Theirs - Two Thousands Ways To Heaven, Cretu And Thiers - When Love Is The Missing Word...maybe even more, but that's all from the top of my head! Cretu is a hitmaker pal! Trust me!...

All Enigma's videos are religious/occultic visual artistry, because their music is religious, occultic and atmospheric. (I'm not using the world occultic in the negative sense here.) Michael Cretu took bits of music and instruments from different cultures and fused them. In 1990, it was different from something we've ever heard before, original and unique. In 2023, it still is. And yes, back then our DJs played it in the clubs.

Enigma are the German kings of Sex lol. Sandra's unmistakable vocals make this unique even though she did not star in the video to not take away the attention of this project. She was doing vocals on every Enigma album from 1990 to 2003.

The "choir" vocals are performing what is called a Gregorian Chant.
This track was included on one of the Pure Moods discs, but it comes the Enigma album "MCMXC a.D." ("1990"), the first full album that was released.
Everything on the album is composed and performed by Michael Cretu, except Sandra's voice. The entire CD is 7 tracks, but plays as one continuous track if you listen to the whole album.
There were three different versions of Sadeness released as singles. This track you played is Part one of the album track 2. (Track 2, Index 1, if you can find a good CD player from the 80's or 90's, that displays the full track information.)
The "club version" is the Fading Shades remix of Sadeness.
