- In this edition of Rory On Air, my wife Lizi has her first ever flight in a helicopter. I've been looking forward to this moment for a long time, and I think Lizi has too...
That face as we take off is something else. I take her to Turweston in the Cabri G2 for lunch in the cafe. Thanks for watching!

This reminds me of my dad. I took my father flying when I first passed my test. He didn’t even know that I had been taking lessons and as far as he’s concerned, he thought we were going on a pleasure flight with a pilot. When I started the plane up he said “don’t be so bloody stupid, where is the pilot?”.
I said, “I’ve seen them doing it on the television, there can’t be much to it”
I don’t think he thought that we were going to go flying until I called air traffic control (this was at Liverpool before it was as commercial as it is now) for taxi clearance.
In the one hour flight, he never said a word. When we landed he asked when we were going again. We never did and he died in 1989. This I have tears in my eyes and a big lump in my throat as I write this. I just wanted to share. Take care everyone
That’s such a lovely story James. What a wonderful experience for both of you and I’m sure he was very proud of you. Thank you for sharing this. All the best to you. Rory
🤣 awesome story
Good for you. At least he got to experience it once.
first thing i did when i got my ppl-h was take my dad for a ride in an r22, dads have to be the first passenger after passing!
Thanks for sharing this story im sure your father was a great man .
Lizzie’s smile as you took off was priceless! That’s what it’s all about Rory, great to see you back on YT 👍🏻
Thanks very much Steve. I was so pleased and relieved that she liked it!
Happy wife Happy life. Yeah corny.
She does have a sense of humor; controllers reception did sound like he was in a blender. Spot on.
@@Barchenhund that’s a pithy review! Cheers for watching. 👍
Love seeing you two finally in the air together, hats off to Lizi for supporting you through training!
Thanks Chris. She has been nothing short of brilliant from the start.
Rory, beware I bought my daughter a horse 22 years ago, it is now 25 years old and still with us. A CPL(H) will be much less expensive.
Ha ha - well a promise is a promise Gordon...
Great video - Lizzie must have been happy because she didn’t ask “What happens if the engine quits”!
Yes, we’ll we’ve discussed that on the ground a fair bit. 👌🚁
My last copter flight was from Vegas to the Grand Canyon on the Eurocopter 135 in '13. It was amazing, I sat in the front on the way into the canyon and in the back on the way back to Vegas. I've flown in a few other copter types--the Robinson R44, a Bell (with the bubble cabin) and a traditional Bell, I believe the 206.
Copter flight, as your video shows, is so exciting and your spouse is blessed to have a husband who flies. I have flown fixed wing and ultralight trikes since '06--the trike, having no cabin offers views like a copter.
Sounds like you’ve had some great trips in helicopters. Thanks for watching.
Lizzie absolutely makes this video. The constant digging at your rubbish fixed-wing landings tickled me. Great video! Let’s see and hear more from Lizzie, who quite frankly deserved her own RUclips channel “comedy on air”. Brill.
Ha ha - thanks Steve. I’m not gonna encourage that because A, she would be instantly more popular than me, and B she’d probably make me do the editing. 😂🤘
Took my partner flying for the first time and we’ll never have I ever had as much fun in my life with someone I love she loved it she’s my rock and when she supports you then u push even harder to achieve glad she enjoyed the flight mate 👍👍
That sounds like a wonderful experience. There’s nothing like sharing the joy of aviation with people you’re fond of. 👍👍
Great job Rory. Your wife was comfortable with your flying. You looked confident. Thank you.
Cheers Gary. 👍
Welll that certainly was fun watching Lizi take her first ride with you Rory, that giggle just after take off said it all, she was loving it!!! Thanks for taking me along, I've been waiting for this flight for an awfully long time too!!! ;-)
Thanks Dick - I’m glad you enjoyed it. There’s lots more to come too, as we’ve already done some trips in the R44.
I remember my first helicopter ride. I looked around saying, “we have no wings!” These days I find myself flying at least 10 trips per month flying offshore to rigs all over the world.
Ha ha - I think I probably thought something similar. 👍
They are called ROTORS... IT'S A HELLICOPTER 😤
Wow! Are you that ignorant that you think helicopters have wings?... Wtf???
@@joehallam6131 ‘They’re’... someone got out of the wrong side of bed today!
@@joehallam6131 Actually they do have wings. The surface area of the blades while turning act as the wing. My question to you would be, how many helicopters have you been on? Not knowing what to expect that first time is one hell of a ride.
I've only been in a helicopter once. I don't expect to ever go in one again. They are a bit more exclusive for the general public than aeroplanes. I'm glad Lizzy enjoyed the trip as it means you can go places with her without her being nervous.
Also, anyone reading this who can, please donate to the MNDA.
Yes, it’s not an everyday thing Robert. I’m relieved she likes it and is happy to go again. And 100% on the MND Association.
great vid ... I was smiling the whole time! My girl is earning her PPL along with me
That is awesome. It’s lovely to share the learning journey with others. Thanks for watching.
Brilliant video loved it. Well done Rory
Thanks very much Pete. Glad you enjoyed it. 🚁🤘
Really good video Rory. Thanks for posting.
Glad you enjoyed it Roger!
A hreat trip out for the two of you.
Well done Rory. You have approval from the missus for take offs and landings. Nothing else in life matters.
Keep up the great work.
Ha ha - if only it were as simple as that eh!? Thanks Simon.
echoing other comment's this is a wonderful video. the smile on Lizzie's Face as you take off is ace! keep up the great work Rory.
Thanks very much Alex. I’m glad you enjoyed it! Serious aviatin’
Rory , you really must take Lizzie to Beccles airfield . An airfield that really can’t make you feel anymore welcome . Lovely breakfast, why not stay the night with their lovely accommodation .all not expensive .
I would love to watch this .
Well done Lizzy! Another very professional performance of flying and filming Rory 👌👏👏
Thanks very much Kevin - glad you enjoyed it!
Your wife is quite right, most people have and never will fly in a helicopter. I once flew from Yarmouth out into the north sea visiting two to drop off people and landing on a third oil rig where I worked for 24 hours, flying back the third day. The first flight was about 90 minutes, the return flight an hour long. A fantastic experience I will never forget. Glad Lizzie enjoyed the flights.
Thanks for watching. That does sound like an amazing experience.
Great to see you both enjoying a flight together.
Thanks Malcolm, plenty more to come!
Always thoroughly enjoy your vlogs Rory, but this is the one lots of us have been waiting for!. We can see Lizzie was bursting with pride, enjoyment and hunger in that order.!! Congrats to you both.
Thanks Alan. Yes, she was keen to get to the cafe for sure! I'm glad the video was worth the wait for you, Cheers.
Great to see another upload.
Cheers Ant. 👍
Just watched this video. Laughed at the end, when I was doing my ppl, my wife decided to buy a mule. Turns out I now spend more time on her hobby 😂😂😂
Ha ha - yeah well she’s still threatening to get a horse but so far I’ve got away with it… thanks for watching.
This is a great video, Lizi looks so proud and happy,😊 thank you for this lovely share 🚶♀️🚶♂️🚶♀️
Thank you very much and welcome to my channel. 👍
Love it!!!
Thank you!
great job rory well done keep up the good work
Thanks very much. I’ll do my best!
Lovely to watch!!! And now I know first hand how amazing that feeling is - banging video too
Thanks Ben - I’m still buzzing from our trip together - can’t wait to put the video together.
Great video as always, Rory. I'm glad Lizzie (and her see through feet) enjoyed the trip.
Thank you! It’s a classic pic through the chin bubble!
Fantastic Rory! I bet you’ve been waiting for this since day one of your training? How satisfying to take Lizzie up with you. Looking forward to more adventures you two 👍👏😊
Absolutely I have! There are lots more adventures to come. Thanks for watching Kevin.
Fantastic!
Cheers!
Another great video Rory. That’s what is all about enjoying something that you love doing, and it’s bonus when your partner also enjoy it too.. 👍👍🚁🚁🚁 . Sounds like you need to sort some catering out on next flight 😁
Thank you - glad you enjoyed it. Catering is always required!
Great video mate. Lovely to see you taking Lizi up finally after all of that hard work and effort. Look forward to seeing more of your adventures together.
Thanks mate - I’m glad you enjoyed this one. It’s been a long time coming! 👍
Always great to see you at Turweston Rory and thanks for all the great shots of the airfield, great watching 👍
Well it’s such a nice place to visit and there’s always something going on it’s a pleasure to film. Glad you enjoyed this one.
Loved this. Took my Daughter up for first time. Pop down to Brighton City Airport. Nice café here and Heli friendly.
Thank you. I’ve been to Brighton by train and had an enjoyable night out. I’d like to come back by air for sure. Thanks for watching. 👍

Good for you guys! Cheers.
Thank you!
Like many, I have been watching you for a very long time and been looking forward to this first heli trip as much as you and Lizi have. Glad she enjoyed the flights. Great video as always.
Hi Tim, thanks very much. I’m really pleased you enjoyed this one. I’m so pleased Lizi enjoyed it too! Happy landings.
Great video, I remember taking my wife on her first flight in the Heli and I understand the pressure you maybe under. Well done!
Thanks very much Mark. I was nervous because I was so keen for her to enjoy it and I’m delighted she did. 👍
Very cool, nice one Rory.
Cheers Liam. :)
Lizi hitting the nail squarely on the head at 5:41!
Lizi is glad you agree. I just read your comment to her. :)
yayy more rory on air
Thanks Tom. 👍
So much to think about and do as well as actually fly, excellent job 😀
Thanks very much Derek, glad you enjoyed it.
Lovely couple, best wishes .... PS the cyclic vibrates so much !
Well done for putting your knowledge and skills up for all to see!
Thanks very much Max - nice of you to say.
Nice one Rory. Surely a trip to Barton is on the cards where it all started.
100% yes. I’m very keen to return for that reason as well as the fact it’ll be nice to see some of my old gang. 👍
Lovely video, really enjoyed it. I love helicopters.
Me too Colin, but I suspect that’s obvious! Thanks for watching.
Super video - I remember flying into Turweston when I was doing my PPL (pre COVID days) and having a cup of tea before returning to Kemble. Happy days!
Sounds like an excellent QCC route to me! Thanks for watching.
Great video Rory. Glad Lizzie enjoyed the flight. She is obviously very supportive. I guess it would have been difficult without that. My son has almost got his fixed wing PPL and wants to take me flying in the summer. So that’s something to look forward to. He tells me how much learning to fly costs. It’s eye watering!
Yes, Lizi has been very supportive and I couldn't have done it without her. I hope your son manages to take you up this summer - that'll be ace.
I just found your RUclips channel Rory and I’m hooked already. I’m way too old to start flying now, but seeing your videos gives me the kind of experience I often wished I’d had. The most I ever managed was as an RAF school cadet when I went flying in Chipmunks and at one time an Avto Shackleton. I live in Aberdeenshire so especially love watching your Scottish excursions. Keep up the good work.
Thanks again Ian. 👍
Great video thanks. Done about 30hrs. now in rotary wing love it!
Awesome - it’s magic isn’t it! Thanks for watching.
So happy for you sir..
Thanks Lonnie.
Awesome Ride , Thanks Rory & Lizzie
Our pleasure - thanks for watching. 👍
Rory has the hang of it....😎......almost showing off...😜.....all the best to you 👍.....cheers.
Thanks 👍
Ex RAF, flown a lot in helicopters, heavy lift ones. Buzzing along a hundred foot up above the M4 was good fun, feet hanging in the slip stream waving at the children on way to do an air display at Fairford was memorable. Also hedge hopping around the South Downs. Going weightless in a helicopter was fun, took my office crew out for the experience. Flying around Falklands was fun, few rules and interesting country. Helicopters are about the best fun you can have with wings strapped on. Have fun.
Those experiences all sound pretty amazing - thank you for sharing and watching.

Rory. Greetings from San Francisco ,CA Great job kudos to your brave and beautiful wife.
Thank you!
Job Done !! .. great to see you both up in the air together again. Lizi looked really chuffed and pround of her hubby. Nice way to do a " first time out in a heli " ride. Hope you get to do many more. I'm laughing at Gordon's comment below about their horse. Take care and fly safe 👍
Thanks Barrie - glad you enjoyed it. I won’t be laughing when I actually have to buy her one - and she will hold me to it. 😂
Nice video, Rory. Cheers.
Many thanks!
This is such a wonderful vlog, flying with your 🌎 (wife) for the 1st time🤗...❤️ed it! May God grant you both a lifetime of safe & joyable flights together 🤗...
Thank you very much indeed. I’m delighted you enjoyed it.
Very enjoyable,
Thank you. 👍
Love your videos, reminds me of my time flying the R22 back in the early 90’s working towards my commercial. Taking my wife for her first helicopter flight was one the most memorable but I think the most was taking my 1 year old and 2 year old sons! You have that to look forward to!! Fly safe my friend. 👍
Thank you, I’m delighted you enjoyed watching. I am looking forward to flying with my son. Cheers. 👍
Safe flight checks. What a fantastic tour, beautiful view below. Your cockpit view from behind make the controllers looks very simple :)
Glad you enjoyed it Van. It's a well laid out cockpit with all the relevant engine info on the EPM.
Riding a helicopter is best feeling. I flew next to pilot over grand canyon with glass floor. Wish i could do it everyday. Id love to buy and fly a mosquito helicopter but it be too casual of a hobby and something id have to put alot of seriousness and time. If i didnt think they were so dangerous i probably would.
I’d love to tour the Grand Canyon in a heli, I have a friend who did it and said it was fantastic.
Great video. Love it. Take Lizzie out to the coast starting from maybe Kings Lynn in Norfolk tracing the coast around towards Great Yarmouth, then back home flying over the Broadband area of Norfolk.
That sounds like a fun trip - cheers!
Great to see your wife genuinely enjoying the flight, just love helicopters 💪💪💪
Cheers Neil. 🤟🚁
This was a lovely video and very fun to watch. I definitely would love to see you guys fly into some more heli specific airfields or perhaps up to Manchester or Liverpool ? I loved Lizzie's idea of her dad mowing a H into the grass on his lawn 🙂😂
Thanks Matthew - I have loads of trips planned and we actually flew one today which I can’t wait to share.
Great video Rory! Watch this video from Washington State(US) Love your videos ❤️❤️
Thank you Rodger and welcome to my channel! 🤘😃
I truly appreciate your videos Rory. Having your lovely wife Lizzie with you must be gratifying. I like all your video sir. But I must say it seems to me that my favorite ones are when you two fly together.
A big tip of the hat to Lizzie for such support!
There is Nothing like the love of a woman who is willing to take chances in support of her man. Hugs to you ma'am.
Lovely comment David - thank you so much. I read this one to Lizi. I am an extremely lucky man to have found her.
@@RoryOnAirPlease forgive the misspelling of her name. Brilliant, than you would be in the perfect position to pass on the hug. Cheers, and keep those videos coming!
I rory and lizzy. Hope both of you are well. Philip is glad lizzy enjoyed it and not panicked a bit of airoplane experience helped for lizzy. Lizzy you need some fish and Chips before you go up next time.rory I bet you feel better not wareing your mask in the helicopter. Awesome video as always rory brilliant view buddy.philip can not wait for the next one hope to see you soon phil.
Thanks Philip. Yes it’s great not to have to wear the mask in the heli and I’m so pleased Lizi liked it. 👍
Just found your channel after listening to the podcast with Flightdeck Wingman. What a brilliant channel
Hello, welcome and thank you! That was fun chatting to scrabble. 👍
Was that hysterical laughter at the start?
Yeah, I think it was nervous but happy laughter.
Yes, Rory, that nervous sort of laughter before entering the dentist’s chair.
Hi Rory. I loved that. Lizzy was clearly enjoying it. I was full of butterflies all the way. I don't know why that was. I've flown in a jet ranger over the lava flows on Hawaii. Close enough to feel the heat. But my one big claim to fame, is actually 'flying' a Spitfire. Not just any old spit. It was the grace spitfire. My son's best mate is Rich grace. Carolyn's son. Heard of her?
You are a natural Rory. Dave
I have and that’s very cool - I’d love to fly a spit - but who doesn’t! I’m glad you enjoyed this video - cheers.
I enjoyed that! I think Wellesbourne Mountford has a nice cafe.
Yes. I’ve been meaning to go there for some time actually.
Great video as ever Rory! Glad your wife enjoyed the flight! Can't wait till I can take mine out for the first time. A while away yet! I may of been lucky to be in two helicopters but never actually flown in one. Sea king and a AW101 Merlin. Unfortunately the exercise with the Merlin was called off due to weather 😭
Thanks Paul, I’m glad you enjoyed it. That’s a shame about the Merlin - mega machine. I can’t wait to fly the big machines one day.
A great flight enjoyed the video, l have flown in a helicopter myself from a farmers show in the south west of Scotland - happy days.
Nice one John, glad you enjoyed it.
A great video as always Rory. A bit sad to see Bruntingthorpe runway so full of cars.
Thanks John, I agree. I always feel sad seeing airfields that are no longer in use as an airfield.
Flew into Leicester today with the trusty C42 wow pretty busy with rotary traffic from the heli centre. Saw a couple of 44s on the ground was looking our for you
Nice one - it is pretty much non stop at helicentre. I wasn’t there today I’m afraid - I was working on audio projects at home. Glad you had a good flight.
Great stuff Rory. I spent 25 years in the RAF and only ever had one flight in a helicopter, but, it was quite special. Blackhawk out of Akroteria on a nighttime exercise. We got to try out the NVG gear and it was awesome.
That sounds great. I’ve yet to try NVGs but I bet it’s an experience. Thanks for watching.
Great comment 'nice to know where the house deposit went'. I must get to this bucket list item, these videos keep the dream alive..
Ha ha - thanks Simon. You can do it!
@@RoryOnAir I have a new roof to pay for first, listed buildings cost a fortune...
hi rory and liz its great to see you both again i wish you all the best flying by the way when is your trips starting again.
Thanks very much mate. 👍
Nice vid! 👍🏻
Thanks very much Jolmer. 👍
That's awesome, love flying in helicopters :)
Me too! Thanks for watching. 👍
Great Vlog Guys just subscribed
Thank you and welcome!
Hotel with helipad - Corse Lawn House Hotel, Tewskesbury, good food but not cheap.
Thanks - I’ll check it out. 👍
Good luck Lizzie with the new job. Raising awareness for MND is fantastic my son in law lost his Mum to this horrible disease on THE Sept 11th.
I’m sorry to hear that. She’s doing her best to make a difference.
Well done Rory. I think I've said before but I'm so jealous that Lizzie loves everything about your flying. My family is only interested in the aircraft that'll take us away on holiday, and only recognise a generic type of... plane! Looking forward to seeing your career progress. The nearest field to me is Denham, if you ever fancy it I'll buy you a coffee & a cake from their cafe.
Thanks Jed. Yes, I'm very lucky Lizi is happy to fly with me and that she actually enjoys it.
Really nice vid Rory. Lizzi looked well happy with the flight. Agree with her re the helicopter feeling more stable. Once flew in a Jet Ranger in really bad winds and it was far more stable than a fixed-wing aircraft. Good luck Lizzie with the new job, someone has to pay for Rory's extravagant lifestyle :-) Post when you are coming "home" to Barton?. Regards and stay safe the pair of you.
Thanks very much Richard - I’m so glad Lizi likes it! I’ll be back to Barton for sure. 👌
Cromer (Northrepps) should be just about an hour for you, we have a cafe and it is easy to go on to the Cromer town, could add the interest by flying over the Wash if you wanted. Helicopters are welcome (we get the air ambulance dropping in sometimes).
Great shout. Lizi was born in Sheringham so I’m sure she’d like to visit the area again.
Fantastic video Rory, and what a lovely lady wife you have.....say all the right things 😉👍🚁🚁
Thanks Andy. I’m a very lucky chap.
Great video Rory. Come for a trip to 3 Acres, about a mile away from Emley Moor transmitter in West Yorkshire. Also doing wood fired pizza at the moment I believe!
That sounds ace! I’ll look it up. 👍
Brilliant Lizzy is working for the MNDA, I am an avid MNDA fundraiser - well done you - great video - thank you
Thank you Richard, on both counts. A very worthy cause it is. 👍
@@RoryOnAir Check out the crazy things I did a few years back - worked with the MNDA on the wrap for the taxi ruclips.net/video/J11Djxm9QkU/видео.html
The pheasant at keystone (by the side of the A14) has a strip. Also Fawsley Hall allows helicopters strictly with PPR (and you’ll need to save up for the meal). Both within east reach of Leicester. A few years ago I flew into Fawsley Hall with Frank Robinson in a 44. Quite a funny story but too long and incriminating for repeating here. The airstrip at the pheasant is on the side of a hill and I went in there with a friend in an Auster. You can only depart down the hill and in an Auster you’re fully committed the moment you move. The strip is the other side of some chicken sheds so a couple of hundred yards from the pub, which also does great food. I’d call the pub and check there is enough flat ground at the top of the strip to land and park a heli.
Ha ha - you can tell me that one at an airfield sometime. I'll check out the recommendations, cheers.
How about Fenland?? Glad Lizzie enjoyed the trip 1st one too!! very good ☺️
Great suggestion! I've been meaning to check that out for a while - cheers Robin.
@@RoryOnAir helicopters are quite common there 👍😊
Great video Rory. I'll have to try convince my wife to come up in my Gyrocopter.. she did fly with me once in the C172 that was the last time 10 years ago lol
Definitely worth revisiting the conversation. I’m very lucky Lizi enjoys it. Cheers!
First time watching your video and I really enjoyed it. Your wife did a bit better then myself in my first helo ride. Then I didn't know the pilot. In single engine stunt with my buddies I was calm as a cucumber, wish I still had the vid from it we did some crazy stuff. Take care be safe and have fun. Howdy from Michigan USA
Thanks Greg and welcome to my channel. Sounds like you had fun on your first heli trip anyway - no crazy stunts from me! 😁
@@RoryOnAir aerobatic tail dragged was the plane.
Never been in a helicopter, must do it before i'm too old 😊
Go for it Dean, it’s fantastic!
Great video :) That was the (my) flying club which sublets from the LAA, I can imagine the raised eyebrows at the GoPro selfie :)
Thank you! Ha ha - yes they seemed a little bemused!
Great video Rory proud moment taking Lizzie how about the Petwood Hotel at Woodhall Spa as a landing destination. The hotel has great lunches and is steeped in 618 squadron the Dambustrs history as they used this as their improvised officers mess in the war. The hotel even keeps the bar where they had a few tipples and is a memorial to them. Hope to fly into Leicester this Monday with the C42 so thanks for all the great videos keep up the great work. Chris
Thanks for the recommendation - I'll check it out. Enjoy your trip to Leicester!
My first flight was over the city of Cape Town and around the bay, but my wife was terrified !
Well that sounds pretty awesome but I’m sorry to hear your wife wasn’t so keen.
Only just found this by accident! Interesting because as a Desktop Simulator pilot of many years, I'm about to attempt helicopters! Looking forward to seeing you two lifting off to other destinations! All the best from someone who always wanted to fly as a career but never could for many reasons. However, I did manage nearly 38 years in Aviation Security at both Heathrow and Gatwick. Take care both of you. Regards, Lee, West Sussex
