For what it's worht, I'm putting in some hours in the BELL 47 G2 Helicopter - in Flight Simulator 2020 of course! the Team at FlyInside have created a wonderful model of this great helicopter, one of the first for MSFS2020 and she's a challenge to fly! But I did manage my first spot landing on the helipad of the Burj Al Arab hotel in Dubai!! It's in one of my videos! Hope Lizzy's pregnancy is going well. All the best to you both. Lee

Another good one Rory. Very professional. Down my neck of the woods so looking forward to the Compton Abbas trip when you post it. I'm a controller and also fly the R44 so these videos tick all the boxes!
Great video as always Rory. I said during your training that I was looking forward to the videos of you both flying and thaws have been excellent. Both proud of each other in different ways, just as it should be! 🙂
Thank you Tim. You’re very kind and I’m delighted you enjoy watching lizi and i flying together. I love having her alongside me In the cockpit - it’s a shame I won’t be able to take her on commercial jobs!
As usual fantastic content Rory I really do enjoy your videos I'm not a pilot but still find them fun and informative please keep them coming And all the best to the THREE of you
Hi Rory, nice video as always. Last time I went to Old Sarum they were about to close permanently, but I had heard that had been overturned? Brize? They're usually pretty helpful, my dad and his mates used to fly from a farm strip one field away from their zone and about three fields from Fairford's zone, back in the day, heading south or west Wroughton, Lynham, Kemble were all active military bases. A favourite trip was Thruxton and back, with Boscombe and lots of military bases enroute. There was no going around 🤔😉🤭🤭 Back in those days Boscombe was like Area 51, especially being close to Porton. In fact I thought it still was, especially as the first Jumbo load of SARS2 sufferers was diverted there early 2020, then bused to Liverpool, instead of landing at JL Liverpool their original destination?
Old Sarum didn’t get the planning permission they wanted to build houses on part of the airfield and said it wasn’t viable running it as it stood, so it closed and all the businesses onsite relocated. I understand that the parachute school there have taken a private lease for it, so its effectively a private airfield now - the pilots notes on SkyDemon confirm this. Have to say my last experience there was poor. No welcome at all, a long queue in the cafe to pay my landing fee, and then we were ignored. The noticeboard had an announcement that they were “now open to 7pm for summer evening flying” (wow, my airfield is open until its dark, so 10pm in the peak of summer). We drank our tea and went to Lee on Solent who were much nicer
@@geoffreycoan yeah, I’m glad we had to go to the racecourse in the end - they were tremendously helpful and it was nearer my family’s house than old Sarum. Always a shame to lose an airfield though.
A lovely video as always Rory and congratulations to Lizzie and You on your recent news, coming from someone who has 7 & 4 year old daughters i can tell you your mad 😆
@@davidwookey3792 awesome, I actually think I saw a strip on my way to Abbas. I might ask to drop in there next time I have a plane rather than a heli. 👍
Another great video, really enjoying them and thank you for sharing. What happens after you have built the rest of thoes 32 hours? Never been in a helicopter before, but tempted to book an intro lesson at my local airport in Gloucester to have a go after your videos! Not sure I can stomach the heli costs for a full license though! The microlight could be tempting.
Well I’d urge you to give both helicopters and microlighting a try - they are both superb. I’m hoping to become an instructor next year so we’ll see how things go. Glad you enjoyed it!
I guessed the mixture guard, was the carb heat next to the mixture in older Robinsons? would be easy to pull the wrong one out...Nothing guarding the mixture in the Cabri :)
Yes, I guess it might well have been in the Raven 1 versions. And you’re right about the mixture Cabri. I guess having it up on the roof means you’re unlikely to go there in the air.
What a way to travel ! Another enjoyable video, Rory and Lizi ;-) Do you hire the R44 for the day and if so what's the ballpark figure for the day with fuel ? As always, best wishes to you and Lizi, always enjoy your content.
Do you guys have a concept of CTAF in the UK? Those blind radio calls are common around a lot of smaller airfields although we follow the American call format.
Hey Rory. I know were in a pandemic right now and the market is terrible, but when things are good, is there many job opportunities for helicopter pilots in the midlands? I know for fixed wing airline pilots sadly the jobs are usually saturated and very competitive, especially for new graduates. Do new graduates also struggle to find jobs as helicopter pilots? And assuming, like most if you start of as an instructor how hard is it to then progress into more advanced positions?
Hi Jack, the honest answer is I really don’t know until I try myself. I’m going to go down the instructor route and then hopefully when I have some more hours I’ll be able to transition onto bigger aircraft. We shall see - watch this space as I will keep people updated on my progress.
Rory - when on these 'hour-building' flights - do you have to pay to hire the R44, as it is not a work flight, and who pays for the fuel and any landing fee costs ?
Yes, I pay to hire the machine for time flown. Fuel is included if it’s within range, but if I have to buy more I can claim some back. I pay all fees and charges.

I can just about afford to pay for the integrated course, living costs for the year and perhaps a R44 type rating but realistically I won’t be able to fund hour building. What would you suggest I did? Many thanks Lyle
Thanks Kyle, welcome aboard! I did indeed self fund all my training. I’m almost at the end of my hour building and then I’m planning to do an FI(H) course. That’s a tough one as it depends on so many factors that are personal to you. It’s important to have a plan all the way through to getting a pilot job, but you don’t need to have all the money ready right now. Rory
@@RoryOnAir thanks for you reply Rory. Have you had to self fund all of your hour building? Or just part of it?
