Thanks Gordon. I do feel more confident with it now. I think it's mainly down to repetition and increased experience. I have more capacity now too as I'm more comfortable in the Cabri.
Hi Rory, very interesting to a non manned pilot as well! (This over 70 tries to try to fly a quadcopter!). I've liked and sub'd. I suspect the controller understood what was needed and it was nice to hear her being so helpful. BobUK.
Awesome, thank you very much Karen - I'm delighted I've been of some help. I'm looking forward to becoming an FI - I think it'll be great being able to help others fulfil the dream as my instructors did for me.
I love the way you give flight details and map, that all takes work. MFS2020 are now in the process of designing helicopters for the sim. So it's nice to copy your route.
@@alwatt9367 Ah that's cool. I usually try to include a map but I'll be more conscious of doing that. Perhaps I could start sharing that as a bonus feature for my Patreon supporters?
Love this Rory. The chance to fly is always a wonderful privilege, but to do so over that landscape against that sky scape...and in a helicopter! Yeah, I would of hated every second of it....grumble....grumble.....Keep up the good work and stay safe.
Thanks very much Lawrence. I have to pinch myself sometimes because it really is fantastic and I’m so lucky to be doing it. It’s lovely to be able to share it virtually here. 👍
Great vid Rory, some of the best flying conditions during the winter. EMA ATC in my opinion the best in the country, very accommodating, polite and friendly I did a number of transits Long Eaton/Shepshed and vice versa during 2020 as well as just North of Derby City Centre in their zone and they were fantastic. So cool holding at Ratcliffe Power Station watching landing traffic before crossing their extended centreline. Hopefully we'll know more on Monday but hoping it'll be blue skies again for us all at some point in March!
Yes, they have always been very helpful to me. I hope they see this video to know I’m grateful to them for being so accommodating. Fingers crossed for a good update on Monday. 🤞
its great watching you on saturday especially in that snow lol we havent had snow for ages i remember when i was small the snow came up over knee high ...
Loving the AC/DC quips - glad that you stopped when you did though lol! What a Whole Lotta Rotor your video was, and you were Back Before it Went Black! . I never did Donnington, I rocked out at Reading and MK Bowl, although, it's all a bit of a blur (no pun intended, but I did get to see Blur at Bournemouth ha ha!). When my friend's dad was doing his PPL, in the late 1960s, he did a practice XC in the snow with an instructor. The two other Airfields couldn't be landed at, but it was good experience and hour building after going solo at 8/9 hrs. Came time to land back home and every time the landing was set up, apparently perfectly? The instructor told him to go around. On the third time, with a longer finals, my friend's dad asked why they kept going around and what was wrong. The instructor replied (chuckling) that he didn't fancy landing in the ploughed field adjacent to the runway! The tyre marks on the runway and the ploughed field ruts looked almost identical! Snow, from above, looks similar across lots of once distinct surfaces. Good experience though. And my friend's dad had a three hour drive to and from the airfield that day! Lots more Airfields back then, but flying schools were more dispersed as most local airfields were still military.
Ha ha - very good! I was quite pleased with Carb Heatseeker to be fair. ;) That's a great story! Ha ha - I'm amazed the instructor managed to hold back the laughter for so long! Thanks for watching as always.
Yes your quips were puntastic mate lol! I think the instructor just wanted to see when my mate's dad twigged it. A good pilot BTW, used to be eagle eyed, just goes to show how snowy weather plays tricks on the eyes.
Stunning edition Rory, coupled with great airmanship. What a beautiful time to fly. Im sure that will bd one of the more memorable flights. I always enjoy the vlogs and admire your confidence in the aircraft and your communication. Thank you or your efforts.

@@RoryOnAir I don't have the willpower to watch all of your videos to seek answers I'm afraid. Aren't epaulettes awarded to pilots by a commercial operator to signify their rank within the aircraft? Did you land yourself a commercial job?
@@Pastronomer69 I believe that’s how it works. You get 4 bars for being the captain, which in a single pilot helicopter, makes even someone as green as me the captain.
Thanks Simon. I have a whole new licence which is the CPL(H). I don't actually have a PPL(A), what I have is an NPPL(M) and an EASA LAPL(A) - both of which come with their own licence papers. I have 3 blue wallets now - quite a collection!
Thanks for sharing Rory, its always lovely flying in winter, crisp blue skies, and the snow on the ground can turn everything into black and white which is weird to see. You’re looking very confident in flying the Cabri, handling the radio, map, getting a ruler out, all whilst keeping it in balance and flying true - lots of practice I guess. How many hours do you have on the heli now?
I have about 150 hours heli time now, almost all of it in the Cabri. I do feel more confident with it now but I’m yet to be really tested by bad weather or some kind of emergency so I’m very conscious of not getting complacent. 150 hours is nothing in the scheme of things. Thanks for your comment.
That must have been a right treat, such beautiful conditions! But please get that watch fitted properly, it was driving me mental seeing you struggling to read it halfway round your wrist haha.
Ha ha - it doesn’t normally do that to be honest. I think it’s a combination of the cold weather and the fact I have lost a bit of weight recently. Sorry it annoyed you! Conditions were beautiful though. 👍
Well I’m intending to become an FI at Helicentre so I’d have one then. I asked if I can have it now because it’s easier to say and I guess it’s promotes HC as I talk so win win all round. 👍
I actually have a night rating already. We did the 5 hours night training as part of the CPL(H) so it's on my licence. Helicentre like us to be back before dark though as flying at night is more dangerous than the day in many ways.
Well I could be paid to fly now, but the reality is I will probably not get paid until I get an FI rating which means another 70 hours of hour building then a 30 hour course.
Great video thanks. When you called Tatenhill you gave a pretty comprehensive (long) first call yet you weren't really expecting a response. If someone was 'in the office' and heard the call they may have missed the first part anyway. Why not just give a short call to them and listen out for a response before giving them the works. Not a criticism (I'm not a pilot) just seemed like you could have lightened your load a bit there. If my wife walks into the room where I am and starts downloading her day before catching my attention I'm likely to miss some vital information at the start of her message....... apparently. :-)
You’re absolutely right and I have since discussed this specific thing with an instructor. I ways try and avoid ‘handshake calls’ but in this instance I think it’s the right thing to do. Next time I will just say ‘Tatenhill Radio, Helicentre 45’... and if now response ‘Tatenhill traffic, helicentre 45 is a Cabri G2... etc’
Yes, Covid rules mean no passengers yet - such a shame as I can’t wait to be able to take people up and land at other airfields, which is also not currently allowed.
