Before I retired, a few years ago, I was the only full-time all year around professional gliding instructor in Scotland, for about 20 years. Well done Rory, tremendous effort. Probably not an easy film to put together. Learnt so much…never knew about wire cutters for instance. Presumably IFR is IFR… same minimas, 1000ft/5 miles?
Yeah it was interesting trying to self shoot that when I haven’t used the kit for ages, and when the team were ‘live’ on the job as it were. Good fun though! Yeah they have reduced minima for HEMS jobs but if they go IFR it’s the same for them as you or I. Thanks for watching!

Well done Rory. First time I’ve accessed your very professional videos. It’s good to see videos of this quality amongst some very average stuff. Keep up the good work.
Check out REGA in Switzerland. Apparently they use similar aircraft but they also have the radar nose fitted and I guess it's not just for show. They tried to develop a small helicopter with a heated rotor so they could operate even in snowfall (because they say there are some hundreds of cases where they can't help within 15 minutes as this is their goal, to reach every point within Switzerland within 15 minutes), unfortunately first the project was hampered by the pandemic and afterwards by technical problems.
Yes, some HEMS aircraft in the UK have weather radars fitted in a nose bubble but the SCAA aircraft don't. Heated rotor systems are complex and add extra weight too. It's all a trade off in aviation.
I’ve been watching Hamish’s videos of your family and now have found yours. You both do an excellent job of presenting and explaining your experiences. I’m looking forward to more! We also have two H-145-Eurocopters for patient transport to and from the Northern Islands in the Netherlands or to Germany, but your weather is more challenging, thats for sure. Cheers Craig. Yeah I was really impressed by how quickly but calmly they got organised and off on jobs. Certainly something I’d like to do one day and I can totally see why you loved it.
Fantastic documentary style video, Rory !! As well as a great helicopter pilot you'd make a great documentary maker as well, well, you already do !! I was glued to this video the entire nearly 28 minutes. Your brother is the spit of you, seems like a great lad. Hope your Dad is as well as can be expected and sending my best wishes to you and your family, all the way from Leicester. I'm James's neighbour ( James of helicentre fame ). Thanks for another great video, cheers, Daz.
Superb video Rory - very well presented and informative. As an active paraglider pilot of many years I unfortunately have seen a few air ambulances turn up to accidents - thankfully never for me, but it is reassuring that amazing people and services like this exist. I flew the coast to coast route ( Workington to Whitby) on my Paramotor back in 2014 to raise money for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance which was a fantastic success. I’ve made a donation on the SCAA website just now after watching your video. Safe flying - I might see you in the front of an S92 taking me to or from work 👍🏻
Well you’re a gentlemen for donating - thank you. Yeah my brother is a paraglider pilot so I hope he never needs their help but I’m glad they exist should any of us need their assistance. I hope to take you on a smooth trip offshore then! Cheers
Brilliant video Rory and a great insight into how the Air Ambulance operates. I hope you are enjoying flying the S92. Would love to get my pilots licence someday 🙂
Really enjoyed that mate. Another flawless Rory On Air production! Great to see you on the big screen again and I have to say I enjoyed the transition to 4k as well! Always a pleasure to see you’ve released a new video. Send my regards to Lizi.
Well luckily my computer seems to have the grunt to cope with 4K. I probably need to upgrade my camera but it’s coping ok at the moment. Thank you for watching dude. 🤟👍
Great video! It’s good that people get to see the other side of the air ambulance paramedic role as observer and crew. Having flown many air missions with the UK and Australian ambulance services, I can say it’s a great job but thank god for larger aircraft and tool such as the Lucas device. If you ever get to Western Australia, a combined fire and ambulance service aircraft also has off shore search and rescue capability. The crews are winch trained and often take patients off of ships. I’m sure Clinton, James or one of the team would love to show you around.
Just found your channel and I'm impressed by the quality of this video so have already subscribed! I'm from Aberdeen so the video was extra interesting!
great informative video! i’m a medical student who works part time at the airport sometimes even at bristows but was looking for more info on the SCAA would be a really cool working for them someday
I'm really enjoying your videos and can't wait to see what you cover next. Currently I'm doing my IFR training on a 135 in Norway. I was looking at some of your older videos and saw that you featured another 135 from the Northern Lighthouse Board that looked very familiar to the one I'm currently doing my training on. I looked into it and found out that our school helicopter was previously registered as G-CGPI which matched your old video. Just thought that was a funny coincidence and wanted to point that out. keep up the great work!
Fantastic helicopter tracing! Yeah Papa India featured way back and was operated by the board for a while before PDG started doing it with a different machine in their own livery. I was taken up for a flight around Auskerry in PI so we’ve both flown in the same machine. Thanks for watching and I’m glad you find the content interesting. Good luck with your IR. 🚁👍
A very competent and interesting vlog. Well put together. As with all jargon filled skills a few acronyms that would benefit from a bottom screen translation? Hope all is well with the family, looking forward to the next instalment. Thanks again.
Well I’m glad you enjoyed watching. It’s always tricky to decide where tax money should be spent - I’m glad I don’t have to decide - but it’s wonderful we have the charity air ambulances in the uk.
Awesome vlog Rory do you think you could fit in if you ever got the chance.amazing helicopter crew awesome for the people who need them in a emergency very well trained people it's a credit to them Phil 👍🍀
Great video! Would love to see a similar video with our local air ambulance in Northern Ireland, the swapped out the H135s for Aw109s in the last couple of years. Be good to see the pros and cons of each - already I think the AW109, despite being faster, the wheels lend it to some undesirable situations in wet ground, but interested to hear what the experts think!
@@RoryOnAir Yep it sure seems to be, caught it on ADSB exchange apparently doing 177kts groundspeed (with a bit of a tailwind) flying over the other day! Impressive!
Thanks for answering my messages so promptly with you busy with work and family etc, etc .. I look forward to meeting you in person . Could you take me on a tour of Bristow helos and a flight in the S92 ? That would be just fantastic ... I will buy lunch for you ( fish and chips ) if that's what you like . Thanks, Scott.
Thanks Phil. I’m doing well thanks and really enjoying the offshore work and the work life balance that comes with week on / week off. How are you doing?
Thanks very much. Mine is a DJI RS3 which has been superb. My brother bought the RS4 and has been happy with it too. Depends what camera you have and what you plan on using it for though. RUclips reviews are always handy!
Thanks for the excellent video. Any idea what sort of aviation background do the pilots have? Only helicopter experience or do they also have to have been a paramedic?
The pilots don’t need to have medical experience - they are there to fly and look after the aircraft, not provide medical help. The pilot in the video is ex military. Thanks for watching.
Hi Rory, enjoyed the insight, i was wondering about the maintenence of this aircraft, who does all the maintenence and servicing? Sometimes people forget that the mechanics and ground crew keep these aircraft flying.
Hi, you’re absolutely right and I should have mentioned the engineers. I met Will, one of the engineers at SCAA who was busy in his office doing paperwork while I was there. Engineers are vital in keeping helicopters airborne and are really worthy of a whole video in themselves at my place of work.
Thanks. Well as the pilot said, the charity have one in Aberdeen and one in Perth. The Scottish government have one based in Inverness and one based in Glasgow. There are also two fixed wing air ambulances, one in Glasgow and one in Aberdeen.
G,day Rory from Sydney Australia. Hope your dad's recovered from his medical condition that required an air ambulance. I was loading patients into a Hong Kong built ex military jet turbines helo with side winch- (2000-2001) off roadways and bushland Then ended up living next door to the helicopter base. It was funded by a bank, state Ambulance service and community financial support. Do you have enough hours to fly for an air ambulance? Isn't it a goal to fly onto your home Island? 🚁🌏🇦🇺
Hi John, thank you - yes he’s recovered from the issue he was air lifted for. I don’t have enough hours and experience for HEMS yet but I’d love to in the future. I almost made it to Auskerry, but haven’t quite managed to make it yet. The weather thwarted me!
Ok . How about a complete pre- flight walk- through with an engine start up ? If you need me to pass clearances ahead of time , I will give you my info . Thanks for a quick response with your busy schedule and all Rory . Scott T .
I don’t know but I suspect it’s a number of factors. The 145 is bigger with a longer range which is a plus, but it also creates more downwash which can be an issue. I suspect cost is a factor for a charity too.
He’s over the temporary issue they lifted him for thankfully but he’s got Parkinson’s so that’s just doing what it does to a person. Thanks for asking.
I cannot fathom how Air Ambulances are not government funded. They can afford multiple helicopters per police force, but not one air ambo per NHS area. Shameful, and shows where the priorities are.
Definitely lucky and would never want to undermine the great work they do by talking politics! Glad to hear the Scottish government does fund some of them. Thanks for documenting their efforts@@RoryOnAir
Brilliant video and really interesting. The Air Ambulance’s all over the UK do a fantastic life saving job. I visited the Wiltshire Air Ambulance near me to meet the crew and see the base and it was fantastic. Great to see you again and look forward to more videos 😜👍🚁

Fantastic video showing the work of the team and the aircraft of the SCAA, I have recently joined as a volunteer with SCAA and can’t wait to get more involved, I have been lucky enough to visit the base in Aberdeen and meet the crew )also had a seat in the helicopter) 😊😊 thankfully not as a patient tho hopefully sharing this video will give more of an insight as to the amazing work they do.
Well from what I’ve seen, you’re getting involved with a super bunch of people so good for you. Thanks for watching my video. 👍
Great episode, thanks so much Rory!
We'll be in Aberdeen in May so will keep an eye out for the SCAA!
Thanks for watching Alfie. 🚁🤟👍
Brilliant video Rory - you need to do more of these :)
Thank you. Is that you Captain Kelsey?
Brilliant video as ever Rory! Makes me miss HEMS even more than I already do! Incredible work they do.
Cheers Craig. Yeah I was really impressed by how quickly but calmly they got organised and off on jobs. Certainly something I’d like to do one day and I can totally see why you loved it.
super job Rory, hope your dad's ok, I will donate, best from London
He’s recovered from the issue he was lifted with thank you but he has Parkinson’s so he’s living with that. Thanks for watching and donating to SCAA.
Yeah I recognised your handle Daz, thanks for watching. Yeah Hamish is a chip off the old block. All the best to you in Leicester. 👍
Cheers
Good effort, you got further than i ever would have
Well thank you for watching!
Excellent video Rory, living about a mile from Dyce I see and hear HLE79 every day. I donate to SCAA and would encourage others to do the same.
Thank you for your comment and for supporting superb charity.
Brilliant video Rory and a great insight into how the Air Ambulance operates. I hope you are enjoying flying the S92. Would love to get my pilots licence someday 🙂
Thank you, I’m pleased you found it interesting. The 92 is a good machine and I’m very fortunate to be flying as a career.
Great video, gives a really good insight into how they work 👏
Thank you very much. I think it’s fascinating and vital work they do. I’m glad you enjoyed the video.
Well that sounds like a fascinating operation and one I’d be keen to see up close. I’m glad you enjoyed seeing how it’s done over here. Cheers, Rory.
Just found your channel and I'm impressed by the quality of this video so have already subscribed! I'm from Aberdeen so the video was extra interesting!
Hi Jordan, welcome to my channel and thanks for watching. I’m glad you found this interesting. 👍
I seems a lifetime ago that I used to send Pete out on air ambulance jobs... Great video as always, Rory!
I didn’t know you guys knew each other. What a small world!
@@RoryOnAirI worked for Gama, tasking the King Airs and Helimeds for about 4 years :)
@@DeadReckoner awesome! Well you learn something every day. 🤟
Great to see you back
Thanks! It’s great to have a new video to share.
Great video, thanks for sharing.
My pleasure, thanks for watching!
Awesome to see another upload hopefully see more soon. Followed you for ages. Hope your parents are well
Thank you! Yeah it’s a bit more sporadic these days with work and family but hopefully they are enjoyable when a new one appears. Cheers
One of the best videos Rory. 👍
Thank you very much!
Thanks for the video, really good and informative.
My pleasure - I’m glad you enjoyed it.
great informative video! i’m a medical student who works part time at the airport sometimes even at bristows but was looking for more info on the SCAA would be a really cool working for them someday
Great stuff, I’m glad you enjoyed it. Good luck with your medical training.
@@RoryOnAir thank you! If you're still working for bristows I might see you around
@@usmanfarook5826 I am indeed! See you at forties Road. 👍
Really enjoyed that, thank you! 👏🚁
Superb - thank you.
more content please - you are missed :)
That’s kind of you - I have just had another baby so fairly busy! I’ll be back when I can.
@@RoryOnAir congrats - but babies should not come in the way of your amazing You Tube channel :)
Such a well presented and interesting video Rory thanks. Hope you and your family are keeping well.
Many thanks. Yeah, my family are doing grand cheers. 👍
Fantastic video well done
Thank you very much!
I really enjoyed your latest video
Great stuff - thank you.
A very competent and interesting vlog. Well put together. As with all jargon filled skills a few acronyms that would benefit from a bottom screen translation? Hope all is well with the family, looking forward to the next instalment. Thanks again.
Thank you and yes, it’s always tricky to judge which acronyms people might know / not know. Are there any I can answer for you here?
@@RoryOnAir No I'm fine but many who don't know aircraft may not understand.
@@dudleysdad I think most people who watch my channel are quite into aviation but there will always be people who aren't I guess.
Great video Rory its nice to see and very reassuring its a pity that its not funded correctly by government but whats new. Thanks
Thanks Phil, glad you enjoyed it. Yeah it’s not a big helicopter but I can fit in it just fine thanks. 👍
Great video!
Thanks!
Yeah skids are better in certain situations but the 109 is very fast. I can say that as a rated pilot on it myself! Thanks for watching. 👍
@@RoryOnAir Yep it sure seems to be, caught it on ADSB exchange apparently doing 177kts groundspeed (with a bit of a tailwind) flying over the other day! Impressive!
Good job Rory great video, maybe a 135 rating down the line?
I’d be over the moon to get that on my licence one day. 👍
Okay the preflight briefing. WTH Did he say?😂
Ha ha, stay away from nasty weather, don’t run out of fuel and let’s get the job done. 👍😂
Sadly we can’t take people on trips, but I appreciate the thought. 👍
Great job as always Rory. How are you getting on with the rigs?
Thanks Phil. I’m doing well thanks and really enjoying the offshore work and the work life balance that comes with week on / week off. How are you doing?
@@RoryOnAir The usual grind! Hoping to get back into heli's next year. Congrats by the way on no.2! Send my best to the boss :)😉
@@peenergysolutionslimited8903 ah thank you. Yes, he’s getting big quickly! I hope you get back to flying soon. All the best. 👍
@@RoryOnAir ping me your Scottish address to my email. 👍
Hey Rory, loving your vlogs and have followed your channel from the start. Can I ask you which Gimbal you use or recommend ?
Thanks very much. Mine is a DJI RS3 which has been superb. My brother bought the RS4 and has been happy with it too. Depends what camera you have and what you plan on using it for though. RUclips reviews are always handy!
@@RoryOnAir Many thanks Rory.
Tidy is the best😅 of everythig
Thanks for watching
Great work, but I have a question here: why is this helicopter based at Aberdeen (east coast) and not at Inverness (more centric)?
Thanks. Well as the pilot said, the charity have one in Aberdeen and one in Perth. The Scottish government have one based in Inverness and one based in Glasgow. There are also two fixed wing air ambulances, one in Glasgow and one in Aberdeen.
Your name is very good
Ha ha - so is yours!
Wenn hier vor so einer erstklassigen Reportage nochmal Werbung der GRÜNEN Ideologen läuft, künde ich RUclips.
Glad you enjoyed my video. I can’t help what adverts get shown I’m afraid.
G,day Rory from Sydney Australia. Hope your dad's recovered from his medical condition that required an air ambulance.
I was loading patients into a Hong Kong built ex military jet turbines helo with side winch- (2000-2001) off roadways and bushland
Then ended up living next door to the helicopter base.
Scott T .
I’ll have a look at doing that. Cheers
Why doesn’t SCAA change to h145 like Scottish ambulance service
I don’t know but I suspect it’s a number of factors. The 145 is bigger with a longer range which is a plus, but it also creates more downwash which can be an issue. I suspect cost is a factor for a charity too.
How's your Dad doing?
He’s over the temporary issue they lifted him for thankfully but he’s got Parkinson’s so that’s just doing what it does to a person. Thanks for asking.
I cannot fathom how Air Ambulances are not government funded. They can afford multiple helicopters per police force, but not one air ambo per NHS area. Shameful, and shows where the priorities are.
There are actually some government funded air ambulance’s in Scotland, but I take your point. I think we are lucky to have the charity funded ones.
Thank you. You’re right, the crews all over the UK do fantastic work and on the various air ambulances. I’m glad you enjoyed watching.
It’s a shame those rich muppets in the SNP doesn’t dip into their pockets and donate to the trust!
Well I won’t comment on political stuff but I’m delighted you enjoyed the video!
