He had his last day on the job, and on the way to the station to retire his gear, an emergency call of an active shooter that was able to steal a police car from a downed officer downtown was called in. He decided to pick up the call, when he did not have to. He assisted chasing down the shooter, and helped take him down. He was shot multiple times, including once in the face. Luckily, he made a full recovery, and was marched through the school being praised by everyone, and the school districts and town made huge donations to him and the families of all injured and killed officers and their families.

I vaguely remember this man, but I do remember him being friendly and clearly being that over 35yrs has passed, he left an impression. I thought for sure at the beginning of this, the police were going to ask you to help search for something in a hard to access area. Nope....they wanted to give this retiring officer a cool memory before he starts his new path. I would love this, and I'm sure he did as well. Awesome "last day" ride! Congrats to you officer!

Awesome! Great job! A word of advice, and something I saw EVERY day as a CFI...don't favor a perfect headwind at the loss of available landing areas- ESPECIALLY in a low-inertia rotor system like the R22. You flew over the trees on your approach to the school, an action which I imagine is because we are trained "always perfectly into the wind". If you would've taken a path over the football and softball fields, for example, on approach you would've had perfect, flat areas to land in case of emergency/engine failure. Instead, you chose over the trees (and NOT the fluffy kind) presumably because it was "into the wind". I'll take a slight crosswind any day if it keeps me over good forced landing areas! Just some words of advice from years landing in remote areas as a HEMS Pilot. Fly safe!

    Great job
The R22 i worked for Frank Robinson in the 1970's when we were building the R22 in a Hanger and Torrance California. Then moved to a warehouse to go in to production of the R22. Keep up the good work.

I expected a pilot vs. law enforcement scenario and was presently surprised by the twist, watched the whole thing, thank you for your service to the school and for the pilot's willingness to give this guy a great send-off
