@dylansnyder1820 Jason Kidd wanted more shooting and spacing on the floor and THJ is a very streaky shooter. However, he’s been a bench warmer the last 8-9 games and has Zero rhythm or confidence in his shot.

Exum should be playing 20+ minutes every night frankly speaking. He proved himself as the Mav's fourth best player all season long and got punished after one bad play against the Clippers. He should take over Green+Hardy+Kleber+THJ's minutes

LOL Explain why Hardy never got a shot? The Luka, Kyrie and Hardy lineup was the most effective lineup in the game until the 4th quarter. Hardy left the game with the Mavs up by 9. Yes he did not score but he spaced the floor allowing Kyrie and Luka to get in the paint. There was a play that Brown refused to leave Hardy even after Tatum was burned because he did not want to give up the 3 to Hardy who is shooting 40% from 3. LOL even Boston knows Hardy can score, why hasnt Kidd figured it out?

Tell that to Jaden Hardy who does nothing but score when given the shot, and his coach wont allow him to see the court.
Loyalty is great during regular season. Once playoffs start it's put up or shut up. Coaches simply have to play who is producing. Scary that in game 3 of a must win game in a tight one we played 11 players, where a 20 yr old was your 4th and maybe even 3rd best player. Kinda sums up the roster.

Who cares about Luka talking to the refs? His poor basketball decisions are what cost the Mavs the game. They could have won this game by 20 if he just kept attacking off P&R like they started. Why did he start settling for step-back 3s when he was getting whatever he wanted? And then falling asleep on defense numerous times.
JKidd made two calls that killed the Mavs' momentum: benching Luka and Kyrie in the first quarter, and calling a momentum-killing timeout in the fourth quarter after a Jrue miss...
Actually thought that and playing THJ so much we're keys to lost. No way can this team compete with any team without Luka and Irving being on the court.

Hardaway with 20 minutes is an absolute joke. He played like he wanted to collect stats for his basketball reference page but sadly didn’t get anything. Exum had great energy on both sides and only got 3 minutes. Kidd did not do a good job tonight. When he called the timeout to stop the 20-2 run I almost lost it
Exum has been amazing defensively and should take Green+Hardy+THJ+Kleber's combined minutes

I'm an older Celts fan ... I even went to Red Auerbach camp in high school when Len Bias and Reggie Lewis were still in college before the Celts drafted them. This Mavs team is like us in the early Tatum and Brown years - living and dying with their stars' individual successes and failures. This year's Celts team is just a Wagon and so much better constructed than any other team. If they win on Friday then they went 80-20! The Mavs were just the final ones to take the pain. Plus Mazzulla is actually a much better coach than anyone thought. Psyched for the 5th championship in my lifetime!
You don't have to switch everything. The Mavs are letting Boston do anything they want, including targeting Luka on defense. Your good defenders have to beat screens...this is what good defenders do. Same on the offense...you don't have to let Boston's defensive decisions dictate what you do best on offense. You are a pick and roll team, with blitz support from your bigs when Luka crosses half-court. So what if Tatum is matched on Lively and Gafford? You had an excuse with Porzingis in there, but not tonight. No reason to completely disregard your most dominant offensive schemes. It's frustrating to see this team so outcoached.

What’s embarrassing is that the NBA showed the Celtics halftime locker room talk and Jayson Tatum literally exposed the Mavs defense and said to basically “just shoot 3s they’re leaving us wide open in corners.”
We are never winning with the zone defense… and that’s all the Mavs play. Over helping and letting them get easy 3s this whole series and it’s ridiculous that Jason Kidd doesn’t get that in their head. It hurts to see honestly.

Sad to see Luka getting cooked on the defensive end, Boston just have too many weapons. Hopefully the Mavs improve their depth this offseason, Kleber and THJ too inconsistent. Develop the 3pt shooting of Lively as well for more versatile offense.

Agree Maxi and THJ are the obvious 2, but Jones, PJ, Exum, Hardy and Gafford without Portgingiz playing really gave us nothing, Liv missing ally dunk sure didn't help. Celtics just smother Luka and Irving on D and no one will or can step up. 2 can't beat 8 solid players that all play D and great shooters as well. Celtics are that much better than Mavs current roster. Great year for Mavs but obvious to see if you want to beat Celtics major rebuild of getting rid of at least 6 dead pieces and adding 2 or 3 solid players is needed. Luka, Irving, Liv, Hardy, Omax and PJ maybe trade or release the rest, lights too bright from them or talent at this level just not good enough. Let's show some pride and win Sundays game and not let them celebrate winning ring on our court. Thought Kidd was terrible coaching in this game.

Gafford showed some signs of it and Lively can add weight and learn. Definitely need to dump THJ, Maxi, Josh Green, Exum, maybe DJJ too for the right counter piece but he’s at least contributed. They really are only one solid piece away I think, if they could get someone like Siakam I think they’d be the best team, everyone’s 25 and under and can still develop as well. Hell, even a Duncan Robinson could help a lot. They definitely lack shooting, severely.

Celtics fan here, started watching your podcast after watching Locked on C's and honestly enjoy your analysis a lot. The Mavs are at the same position than the C's a few years ago, slightly ahead of schedule. Now that Luka got a taste of the finals, he will be back soon. And like the C's five years ago you're learning that Kyrie in unreliable when the lights are brightest, after that one game in 2016.

teams dont get swept in the Finals often at all. It's ridiculous to assume that would happen. It was even more ridiculous before the series started.
If you "knew ball" you can easily see that guys are missing open shots. Even with KP out our Centers aren't producing the way they did in the other series. I’m not even upset about the THJ over Exum as I am about THJ over DJJ; like what is the logic behind that? We extended Kidd just to have him do that?! Honestly I think Kidd knows the series is a wash and he’s given up, he wants to end the series on Friday so he can go on vacation that’s the only explanation I can see for why THJ would be out there during crucial moments over people like DJJ and Exum

Wish that Luka would take this summer off, rest, get well, and get better conditioned. His body is not going to hold up when he keeps playing year round non stop. The body needs time to heal.
The simple fact is that the Celtics are a way better team and this series has proven that. I’m a Mavericks fan and love what we did the first three series, and am overjoyed that the team made it this far. I never had any expectation that we would win, so am not “that” upset about what’s transpired. Yeah, it sucks, but I think overall, we were kidding ourselves if we thought that this was not possible. We’ll see what happens on Friday, but while we are a good team, we aren’t at Boston’s level.
Not at all saying, I disagree with you but when you have a team that has six players that are essentially almost making $30 million apiece and two players out of the six on Supermax contracts I would hope they’d be a better team. Now unless Dallas is willing to pay all their players that kind of money, there’s always gonna be a gap between a team that’s playing their players come next year with Tatum at a Supermax contract $1 billion. I don’t see Dallas willing to do that.

Dallas just cannot match the Celtics‘ cold-blooded three-point shooting. Hardaway and Kleber are not playable, the rest is too unreliable. Lot of dumb plays, Luka needlessly fouling out and missing tons of make-able shots, hunting for fouls on a night the refs weren’t interested, PJ missing that open three at the end. Boston is more balanced and very poised. Dallas will be better next year with that experience under their belt and a hopefully slightly better roster.

Luka lost more points single-handedly than the points he made on offense this game. Sold hard. Attacked and exposed on defense every time. Luka-stans will deflect and shift blame but that is the root cause of this result. Kyrie lost us the first two being in his head in boston, Luka lost us this one because he still cannot control his emotional state during the game. simple as that..

@takuid full disclosure: I'm a celtics fan, and I've been calling out Luka's laughable defense all series. If this series is over (it is) it's more Luka's fault than anyone's. Our plan in every game was to find Luka on defense and exploit his lack of effort. If your best offensive weapon is also the worst defender on the court (he is, consistently, and by a large margin) you're not winning championships. Luka needs to spend the off-season getting in shape and he needs to commit himself to learning how to play NBA defense, or his career will be defined as a decent scorer who can't win the big one. You can't hide a bad defender in the Finals, especially against an offense like ours, where everyone can score and everyone knows the assignment. Celtics in 4.

Josh Green, THJ, Maxi Kleber and Dante Exum are not good enough for a team wanting to win a championship. Add that to the horrible coaching staff and this is what happens.
Next season they need to give Omax the Kleber minutes and then try to upgrade on SF, SG and backup PG.
Dante Exum has been one of the only positives all series long. His defence on Brown and Tatum is unmatched and he's been 100% from 3pt which stifles anyone else on the team. He should be taking Green+THJ+Kleber's minutes

And Luka also was at fault with that decision to try for a 50/50 charge with 5 fouls late in the game that is still very winnable at that moment. Matchups make all the difference in the playoffs, they got the easy side of the bracket with the clippers being injured and thunder being extremely inexperienced and small. The mavs matchup terribly for the wolves, they made it this far because of the matchups, they are not a great team.

This was one of the most painful games of basketball I’ve ever had to watch. From the swinging highs of the first quarter, to the dizzying lows of the third, to the failed hope of the fourth, to THJ getting to play. I don’t know what to think anymore.

Luka has been that guy since day 1. It’s cool to see how two guys from the 2018 class turned themselves into some of the best players in the world (I currently have Luka 2, SGA 5)

They made the damn finals! Need some retool roster wise, but I believe this experience will help Lukas maturity moving forward. Exum has been the Mav's fourth best player all season long and gets punished after one bad play against the Clippers. There is no reason why THJ, Kleber, Green or Hardy should get any more minutes than Exum. He is the best defender, the best playmaker and best 3PT% shooter and it's not even close

Luka lost this game for Dallas worst than game 2 of Sun two years ago. Kidd contributed for sure but the blame goes to Luka. Terrible shot selection and atrocious defense along with noticing Kyrie had it going and then treating half the game like a rest day when he noted it. It’s rough to see that it still true that if any player is close to his height and has him beat in quickness he is dead to rights on defense.

Yea, he's not consistent enough to be a 3rd star, in terms of consistent offensive impact, he's a solid role player with great versatility on the defensive end, shaky 3pt shot and a great floater-user, but he's a 100% not the 3rd star (he can be tho, has the potential).
But honestly, if D-Live develops an offensive game that adds to his energy and impact on both ends, then he can be the 3rd Star.

Excellent podcast and I think your analysis is right on point from a Mavs perspective. from a C's standpoint, their versality makes it so hard on teams like the Mavs. If your bigs defend the rim, the C's will simply play 5 on the perimeter and shoot the open 3s. If the bigs take away the trhees, that is when you see folks like Tatum and Brown and their guards driving to the basket either for a layup or to kick the ball out to the outsife. Also, the Celtics bread and butter in their better games this year has featured ball movement. desinged to create mismatches and put the defense "on skates". This is a big contras from prior years where they would usually play "hero ball" with Tatum and Brown ISO and the others getting out of the way. Obviously, the team concept being used this year is much more effective. I see the Mava as kind of where the Celtics were in prior years for the reasons you point out. Luka and Kyrie end up going ISO because of the deficiences of the rest of the team. Once more, I've enjoyed your podcasts this series. Keep up the good work.

Slightly bias. Luka is right. We don’t pay to see officials blow whistles. If they’re going to let one team be physical, they gotta let both teams be physical . There was egregious calls in Boston which you can expect-home court advantage. We did not get the same favor in Dallas.

Deni hasn't shown to be worth 3 first round picks. Mavs will have 2 to trade in the offseason and will have expiring contracts, along with a couple of young pieces. I wouldn't be surprised if Nico negotiated with the Wizards again since they have been in touch with him since he has been gm. Did the move to trade them Porzingis for Dinwiddie/Bertans and Holmes for Gafford.
