Despite the unassuming title, this is one of the biggest journalistic scoops this year. Kudos to Isobel and her team for risking their lives for this important work.
I love watching her stories!! She is great
The Chinese government has done this in the Republic of Congo. Kobalt is essential to the green economy, and their state owns 18/20 biggest mining sites.
The hard truth is almost all developing countries have this issue whether you like it or not. I have personally been in a number of developing countries, these corruptions are common knowledge. But another painful truth is the importance of money. If a poor country tries to be righteous and make hard obstacles for foreign investments. Government will not have jobs for people, food for people, schools, hospitals etc. Corruption is the painful dark way every developing country has to go through in order to be prosperous.
A "scoop", lol. The US, France, and commonwealth countries have been doing the same thing in every third world nation since said nations gained "independence". Suddenly, western media is highly concerned about imperialism and economic exploitation of the third world, because China is doing some of it 😅. By the way, China does way more to actually develop the countries it harvests resources from than former colonial powers ever did.
@@dr.z8378 That doesn't make any sense. The reality is foreign countries come in and strip the resources while still leaving the indigenous people poor. Besides, it looks as though these indigenous people aren't dependent on money but the land itself.
His face and pretend confusion when she said his friends name, he knew that she actually knew what was up and wasn't making allegations. Priceless. Again and again Isobel Yeung proves to be a top tier journalist.
Good point
their meeting with jagdeo was all theatre..he said nothing in the interview or the meeting that would implicate him.
He was only stumped because of the sudden realization that the interview was actually an insulting/interrogation.
this video is simply the US making China the bad guy when really the opposite is true.
Because he is a criminal
That made me laugh so hard, he is such a bad liar. Almost looks like a sketch.
He looked so nervous and is so bad at lying lmao it's like out of a movie
As a Guyanese I have to say that this isn't really news to us.. we are aware of these things but can't do anything about it. This video has aired out alot of our country's dirty laundry and I have to admit its left a bitter tatse in my mouth but awarness is the first step to any movement and for that I want to thank you.
I also want to stress the fact that this was indeed very dangerous.. you and your entire crew could have been offed by Guyana's Phantom squad or the Black clothes police.
As a citizen of Guyana, it is my first time watching your reporting and I am grateful to you Ms. Young. With that said, I am extremely proud of your relentless pursuit of the truth regardless of where it may lead. Your reporting has served as an education and warning to those who wish to continue closing their eyes to the decimation of Guyana. The wealthy countries maintain an agenda that promotes plunder and extraction of resources, wherever it may be found. As a result Guyana will be left as a wasteland (repeated history) while it's defenders (PPP/PNC) scramble to hold unto worthless paper whose accounts will be frozen by the same marauders after the deed is done.
Stand together as Guyana people. You guys are acting too soft. It's your land.
Can you do that in China? Think about it!!!!

As a Guyanese I’m glad someone is taking the time to highlight news in Guyana worldwide. There’s a lot of corruption that has taken place for a long time in Guyana and the people don’t deserve to have their beautiful country destroyed for greed
You're absolutely right I find an interesting that these people only work through greed that's why I tell people that you're a real vote is your dollar here in the United States they were trying to push bioengineered food on us not only that but they didn't want to have to tell you if it's real or not people decided to fight against that and chose to boycott those bioengineered foods to the point where it created a new market for organics foods even though organic foods have always been around that's why I say the real vote is the dollar look where the money is going

My entire dads side is from Guyana, and seeing how badly corrupted this country is hurts me.
I'd love to visit the country regularly, but it pains me to see this is what is happening to it and almost puts me off from visiting tbh.
Respect to Isobel and the team though for taking a massive risk in doing this, obviously it's not a very safe country, and doing what they did is extremely dangerous but helpful.
Take my advice stay wherever you are, this country is extremely corrupt, the people mindset too is corrupt, they can't change their leaders mindset if they themselves practice unlawful things, I lived in this country already so i know how it is, they pull each other down like eolves, they do not enjoy seeing their counterparts succesful, greed and envy and division everywhere as they only vote based on color of the skin. No wonder your dad left…
Thank you VICE for educating me about my country. This has been a real eye opener and I have shared it with my community. We need to take a stand and demand change
Another masterpiece from Isobel Young, She never disappoints with every piece of journalism she makes despite the risks needed to be taken.

Guyana is a small country with tons of resources but the people are living in dire conditions. Any politicians involved in corruption should be investigated and charged.
I agree
Chile tried to bring up their people, and how did CIA react?
Not much different than what we call lobbyists in US.
This only been going on for years in Africa alsp
You people are so brainwashed it's scary. This is literally what the USA does all over the world. It literally has overthrown and taken advantage of so many countries!!
Greetings from United States!!!!! This has been the way for all Caribbean countries. excellent reporting, thank you for bringing this to the outside world. The people are starving in Guyana while everyone moves in to get rich. NO ONE IS MINDFUL OF ALL THE DAMAGES THAT WILL DONE , it will take years to fix the ecosystem . The entire world will feel the heat from this type of reckless and dangerous business , NEVER GOING TO GUYANA🙈
Sorry Guyanese people was never starving and would never starves. Those who starves , are those who look up the overhead to wait for money falling from the skies. We had bountiful food. This probably won't get the recognition it deserves since Guyana is a small country, but the quality of journalism here is amazing.
Obviously white journalists are protecting AmeriKKKa's imperialism
Well said! I am also here to learn how to invest after listening to a lady on tv talk about the importance of investing and how she made 7 figure in 3 month, somehow the video taught me nothing and left me even more confused, I'm a newbie and I'm open to ideas on how to invest for retirement
@@rajeshupadhyay5683Think long term, personally i ventured into the market so i won’t be stranded after i retire. A colleague of mine introduced me to CFA " Priscilla Dearmin-Turner " who drew out retirement plans and they all aligned with what i wanted and had to pick one plan and with her exit and entry strategies on commodities , securities and digital assets, my portfolio has really been diversified with good ROI. Financial management is a crucial topic that most tend to shy away from, and ends up haunting them in the near future
Investment now will be wise but the truth is investing on your own will be a high risk. I think it will be best to get a professional👌
Incredible journalism. As a Guyanese I can say that Guyana has always been plagued with corruption on multiple levels and unfortunately I doubt that it will ever change as the people are used to it. A country filled with so many riches will continue to live in poverty.

It never ceases to amaze me how these politicians lie on camera, under oath, in interviews, to their friends and family, to their countrymen, even to the people they do secret business with. This is disgusting to watch.
But you do realize that without corruption, progress is impossible. It is with bribes and incentives that politicians work with progressive legislatures. I hope they made it out alive.
The NYT and Washington Post have been reporting on this for 3 years. How do you think she knew?
@@kjellv2112 They do, you just don't pay attention.
They are covering only one side of the problem, I think. The other side is why there is such a level of corruption in the former colonies. And the truth is, that the former colonizers needed the support of corruptible local officials in their era. And after the decolonization these corrupt local elites were those who came into power. So the culture of corruption was in fact brought by the former colonizers, because systemic corruption was needed to rule the country against its people. And many of these corrupt officials are elected. Why do people vote for them? Because they simply have the right connections to rule the system and candidates who would like to play fair are eliminated.
I wish to commend Isobel Yeung, the reporter and Michael Learmonth, Editor in Chief of VICE News on the production and airing of this short documentary video on corruption in Guyana.
I am a Canadian citizen born in British Guiana and lived there for more than 4 decades and fought against the institutionalized corruption in my nativeland.
The information uncovered in this video is consistent with what I have experienced and know to be accurate.
Guyana is an English speaking relatively small nation of approx. three quarters of a million in an area approx.. 83,000 square miles that was previously colonized by the Dutch and subsequently the British from whom it acquired it’s independence on May 26th, 1966.
The English speaking nation therefore has a rich history of slavery and indentureship with the two main ethnic groups being East Indians and Africans in a ethnic and cultural mosaic of six in total.
I love Isobel Young for her reporting ! The Uyighur investigation she has done was amazing, a few years later, the UN finally acknowledged the existence of torture, concentration camps etc...

This was excellent journalism! With 1 story she was able to get heads of 2 countries (1 of them a world superpower) shaking in their boots. Bravo and well done!
I thought it was just another undercover showing documentary at first - didnt think you guy had the ball to confront the vice president and seriously made a huge impact like this to the worlds political game . this is seriously amazing! wish it could happen in the us too !
This is definitely award winning material and a must see for every Guyanese...People of Guyana! It's time to grow some cajones, stand up and fight for your your land and it's resources. Don't let these greedy corrupt politicians continue to play you.😩
cojones* (cajones means drawers)
@@proudmullet Ok Officer Wordsearch!!....It's also the slang for "Balls"/"Testicles"😩 "Cojones"/" Cajones".... I chose the "a" instead of the "o".😩 What you gonna do... arrest me?!!🙄

VP face about friendship with Su told it all! 😂 Nice work! Be the voice for voiceless!
20:08 That hit him hard 😂😂
Well done Isobel 👏🏾 As a Jamaican who has lived in china for many years this was lovely to see. The same is happening in Jamaica sadly. Excellent piece
Very true! Jamaica got to stop selling out.
Let me put this out there "The CIA helped overthrow the former leftist government of Jamaica through a process of 'destabilization' and a campaign of violence". This is just one act done by the west against Jamaica of many since the Spanish came and wiped out native Jamaicans. You were saying about China.....
Really great coverage of this
He pissed himself when she said Su 🤣
I lived in Guyana, I was married to a Guyanese woman. I met most of the government senior officials including Jagdeo. I was offered a job to work with him, I am an electrical engineer and former infantry officer. I personally witnessed the former president, now vice president doing a deal to steal millions of aid money from the Canadian International Development Agency. Every police officer and every government official in Guyana is corrupt. I remember a meeting with the minister of the interior to arrange for machinery from Canada to be shipped to Guyana, the minister didn't even bother to hide or obfuscate the request for a bribe. He said that the money must be cash, either in US Dollars , Euros, Pounds or Canadian Dollars. He took a box from his right desk drawer and from the $50,000 Canadian, he put a portion in the box and the rest in his pocket. He said this was for the President and Prime Minister. I remember meeting a corrupt Panamian official who was with the World Bank. At this long tedious boxing extravaganza with all these government officials including the President, Vice President, the Prime Minister and the cabinet, the President was doing a drug deal with the Panamian official. Envelopes and cash bundles were right in the open. When I left Guyana the last time, a customs official stole 500 Canadian Dollars and 200 US dollars from me at gunpoint right at the old Timehri airport terminal. He tried to steal my wedding ring as well. I actually grabbed the barrel of what looked like a 357 magnum with a 8 inch barrel. It wasn't loaded. Then two soldiers with old British 9mm Sterling L3 sub machine guns grabbed me an hussled me to my aircraft on the runway. I can also tell stories about how suddenly the bridge crossing the Demarara River is suddenly closed just for foreigners, unless of course you pay the "tax" to "open" the bridge. They refused to recognize my international drivers licence, and I had to pay $500 in Canadian currency to get my drivers licence. The excuse was that my brand new land rover needed a better paint job, therefore it really was a fine. There were decapitated security guards because they didn't accept bribes, most likely drug smugglers and the corrupt police and army. All the senior and junior government officials I met were involved in the drug smuggling business. I remember an advisor to the "uncorruptable" President talking to me when the Prime Minister was present about how they were arranging drug and gold shipments to New York City. The Presidential advisor and the Prime Minister said openly about how to use diplomatic immunity to smuggle the gold and drugs into the US. Now for a really hilarious bit, one fellow I met showed me pictures of the decapitated head of a former President in a glass box. It was shipped to Russia to put in some sort of museum where they have preserved heads of different heroes of the Communist and Marxist Revolution. This fellow made the box for the government because he had a custom glass repair business. Check this out yourself, this museum really existed. At this tedious boxing extravaganza, the wife of the President was wearing a really big golden snake torc with what looked like huge sapphires for the eyes. She adjusted it and it slipped off her arm, I went and picked it to be polite and help her, and a big black police guard grabbed me and hit me and threw me to the floor and started kicking me. Meanwhile I still had the snake torc, and I ended up twisting it out of shape. The gold was so pure, it was very easy to bend it back to fit her. She motioned for the policeman to take the torc from me. She never said anything to me and just turned and walked away. I remember being at the home of the aforementioned Presidential advisor, he opened a huge safe and started grabbing stacks of US currency and filled his briefcase completely with this cash. He was travelling to New York with his diplomatic passport. I can describe lots more about that hellhole. Cheers from Canada.
Sheesh!
How did you make it out alive, remember the congressman who was killed in Jonestown
@@dreamer6508 I was in Guyana right after that. The twin turbo prop aircraft where the three congressional investigators and the pilot were ambushed and killed was a wreck on the side of the runway. Where you go from the runway to the terminal building, there were bullet holes from machine gun fire all along the walls. I actually bought a short wave radio from an American survivor of the Kool-Aid extravaganza. I still have some recruitment brochures for Jonestown I picked up. Also I ended up catching a lot of parasites, Malaria and Dengue Fever. I was lucky to not get AIDS, when I was getting a Yellow Fever booster at the only hospital in the country, a Seventh Day Adventist hospital, they just rinsed the needles in warm water and reused them. There was only power on 12 hours on 12 hours off, depending on what part of Georgetown you were in. Two of our guys caught Hemophilia, about 10 of us got Dengue Fever. Do not be tempted to ever go to that sh*thole. Cheers from Canada.
South America is a rogue town.
You need to write a book, podcast, blog or videos of your these story’s that is absolutely insane the things you went through! Especially the head in the glass box !
Wow! Beautiful reporting. The Vice President almost choked on his own saliva when asking about Su. Thanks for all this hard work Vice.
That confrontation is epic.
VP seemed to hesitate when Leung said Su's name 😂
This brilliant piece of investigatory journalism needs to be applauded! The folks on the ground are doing this with great personal risk.
It’s so depressing to see the leader of a small country with so much potential willing to partake in the exploitation of the land at the expense of his own fellow citizens all for personal benefit that will only last for one person’s lifetime.
Good journalism I would like you to interview the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago.
Nothing new! Chiquita Banana, former United Fruit Company along with the USA government took control of local governments by corruption and participated in exploitation and contamination in many countries around the world.
This is huge. If our world wasn’t so completely crazy in so many ways at the moment, this would be one of the biggest news stories out there.
Thank you VICE. Thank you Isobel.
Great point
The world is not crazy. Only the rich, politicians, and brain dead sheep are crazy. There's actually very few that aren't.
It is not that huge when you realize this has been happening already to so many other developing nations, both previously AND currently. Textbook Chinese colonialism.
it's happening everywhere. oil, agriculture and all sorts of mining. even america's foreign corrupt practices act made exemptions if competitors are also involved in the bribing game.
@@jlee4768 lol Chinese colonialism? 😭 these countries are corrupt , all countries are corrupt, they’re literally developing the country while the west just extracts wealth but doesn’t develop anything 😭 cmon if u want that to change u need to change the Capitalist system we live in
We need a government corruption investigation like that one in Trinidad 🇹🇹.
The corruption in Guyana is from the government sectors down to the police service, people in Guyana and visiting guyanese from overseas countries who fled the country due to endemic corruption have to bribe to get some thing done or get out of charges.
This will make a huge impact on whats to come, I can see this as being one of the largest journalistic pieces in a while. I myself did not know much about the plight of Guyana and it's people but this is important, because without the fauna and flora of that country the whole world may just collapse further. And this time literally.
I can't stress enough how impressed I am with the wonderful job done by everyone who has made this piece possible. Thank you for your service 🙏
Umm this is anti-China propaganda, the USA and others are doing far worse damage and engaging in far bigger corruption for deals worth 10s of Billions of dollars if not 100s of billions all around South America. The entire continent has been intentionally destabilized due to it's enormous wealth of resources.

Thank you so much for publishing this documentary. Shared this with my family that are from Guyana.
Darian what did your parents had to say when you shared it with them?
I am curious
@@janiceshepherd3346 If his parents had any good sense they'd welcome the Chinese businessmen. The alternative is getting invaded and bombed by Americans or NATO, millions killed and everything stolen.
@@janiceshepherd3346 It's Western propaganda to make China look bad
@@janiceshepherd3346 most Guyanese people don't trust the government so I don't think this is going to be surprising

What a fantastic piece of journalism! Isobel and team are doing such incredible work. I wish this made it into mainstream media... but oh well. Thank you Vice!
That's why on all this news you see on TV is all fake they don't know the real stories but now we have cameras and we expose the evil in this world God bless
yea, why isn't Isabel more well known and all over the major networks?
They’re all carrying water for China themselves.
Wow,this is really nice. A big thumbs up to the crew. Keep it up!
