- Homemade backyard catamaran Kaleidoscope, built by one man. This video represents me designing my home made backyard boat build. Custom 100ft catamaran, from concept to completion in 5 years, single handed in my back yard. Cutting it into 7 pcs, placing them on 7 oversize truck loads for transporting to the ocean. Reassembly in 6 hrs. in the water. Sea trials, first trip to Cabo San Lucas Mexico. Time laps video going through the Panama canal. I will be breaking up the process by volumes, Please subscribe and share to see the next videos. Leave comments below. Thanks for watching. I will answer any questions you may have in the comments below.
As a retired metal smith, and a sailboat sailor, I can truly appreciate the time, skill, and beauty of your work. Well done, sir. Salute!
What was the total cost to build that thing I wonder
You Made a Beautiful Boat She is Very Beautiful every thought about Making a Hydrofoil ? Alexander Graham Bell Created One Once out of Wood and it performed well its flying on the water anyway you did Good!
Imagine all that work then when you put it unto the water it sinks 😳
Same very well built. I'm assuming the welders good has the boat looks very well done.
Dude woke up one day and said I’m going to build me a yacht in my front yard and actually did it mind blowing. Very talented man right here. Seems like you should start a boat making company.
Make sure it's not in Commiefornia!
..., U go broke n woke
Then one day a Mexican drug cartel stole the boat.... true story... but he did eventually get it back
@@wilhallman2890 I didn't know he got it back I hope its true
Yup, that happened once before if I remember correctly. 🚢🐫🐪🦏🦏🐂🐄🐕🐩🦛🐖🐏🐑
Ignore the whining in comments. These people never uploaded a video or built anything. I'm hooked ... pls keep em coming.
People be bitching because he built a cruiser when people are use to seeing explorers built in aluminium he made clear mistakes but they are non problems on a catamaran he over built some aspects it really doesn’t matter
@@kennethhanes5438can you point me to the bitching comments, oh that’s right there isn’t any, you’re as bad as OP W⚓️
What are you talking about nobody is whining in the comments, they all are congratulating him and giving him compliments about his yacht build.
@@kennethhanes5438what are you talking about nobody is bitching because he built a cruiser or about any mistakes he made, everyone is saying congratulations and complimenting him on his yacht build.
@@Ricanchitown You are whining now. Ironic. Shhhhhh. Ha ha. Bye.
When some people have a lot of extra money and time, they spend it on drugs and rock’n roll lifestyle. This guy spent a lot of it on building somethings amazing. Respect!
Why not both?
Man and I can't build a shed correctly. What a incredible story. Someone should make a movie about this guy.
“While building this boat I also simultaneously created 4 new sander designs to make my life easier” What a legend!
and it was easier than sanding it by hand.
I can't believe one man with no engineering or carpentry experience could built such a huge project. We are talking genius level human being. There are no words to comprehend such a concept.
Could have built the pyramids
I was thinking exactly the same thing. It's still unbelieveable to me.
Mate I would do it over the weekend for cash in hand
It's impossible to do a perfect job with no experience. Just try making anything and getting it perfectly right first time.
@@AWBuildersure it is. Some of my best work is done when I have no idea what I’m doing. I heavily research how to do it, and I because I don’t know which corners I can cut to save time, I end up doing it perfectly. Anybody can do something like this with enough time, money, and a knack for learning.
I lived in Canyon Lake at the time of your build. I met you & got a tour when you had the hulls payed & had just installed the Detroit Diesels. Glad to see it has become an internet sensation
Love from NC 🇺🇸
When was this built?
As well as I did.. my friend John Albert took me to see it .. frigin amazing.. I now reside in Colorado.. unbeknownst to me after a couple of decades.. I found out a friend of mine here is this guy's cousin.. name is Gene.. small world
I went on your boat when it was doing sunset cruises in Cabo (1998). You told my buddy and I about building it. It was a rough sea, we went in the Sea Of Cortez that evening. What a great boat.
25 years ago I lived in the Adelaide suburb of Salisbury. One day down the road there appeared a huge concrete mold on some ones front lawn. I had no idea what it was for until the mold was removed and there was a 60 foot concrete yacht hull. We all watch this but not much seemed to happen. So one day I walked up to the house and asked the owner who was working if I could take a look. He happily showed just how much work he had done to fit out the inside with the engine room, cabins, deck, everything. I was stunned at the work he alone had done and how beautiful his craftsmanship with the most beautiful timber work I had ever seen. I watched it put onto a low loader and taken 30 Km to the port of Adelaide, where I saw it in the water while the mast was fitted. One day the house was sold and he was gone to live his dream somewhere.
From what I see as a l o n g time boater, that is probably the most pleasing looking yatch I have ever laid eyes on..... BEAUTIFUL LINES.....................
Wow. The sheer perseverance and stubbornness is astounding. You see lots of 20-30 foot boats started but very few finished. My dad and I built a 26 foot sailboat and I thought we were nuts but you sir are amazing
A man that invented sanding machines to build the boat no one else could build in their yard, bro you are a legend. Those sand robots he’ll be even richer than you obviously already are.
This is the single biggest most impressive home build on the internet! Have to see it to believe it
This is one of the most incredible things I've ever seen!
Wow! I loved this!
Brings back great memories working with my Dad. Best time of my life. We built a 30ft timber “go fast” boat from scratch. Took molds off of it and produced sport boats and centre consoles. Like you, we had no straight lines and all compound modern curves. I’m so impressed with your build.
One tip I’ll pass on for others to make the fairing of the filler or “bog” easier is to use a notched trowel. You get a large foot long or so rectangular trowel such as you would work or screed cement flat with. You take a rectangular file and file notches roughly about an inch apart about a quarter inch deep. You then use that edge to apply your filler. You end up will endless triangular or pyramid shaped lines all over the hull, fine at the top and wider at the base where it’s stuck to the boat. When you use your long “torture board” for fairing there’s very little resistance from the filler as the lines are spaced apart and fine in area where the sanding board touches them. You fair the area quickly and come back later with the other edge of the trowel that’s straight and apply more filler to fill in between the lines. This takes a lot of the back breaking work out of knocking down vast areas of filler.
Another tip is to mix paint tint in with your filler if you are going back over areas, it stops you rubbing through already worked areas.
I must say Sir I was so impressed with your fairing reflection. That doesn’t happen by accident. A job very well done.
All the very best to you,
Cheers 🍻
I used to be a ship builder for General Dynamics. Learned so much for the years that I spent on the shipyard(s) in new construction and in Navy repair. Had helped repair the USS Coronado which was an aluminum combat vessel. I was apart of the hull repairs and ripouts, installing new frames, stiffners, bulk heads and decks. So much goes into design and engineering. Your a badass for sure! you did this all alone from your drawings, to your concept model, and then actually going to town and building in the fashion that you did and under those dry desert conditions! Insane! You are the G.O.A.T 🐐
Geez. I took 5 years to build a 20 foot flats boat with an outboard. This is world class determination. Beautiful!!!
Wow .
Not very often I am totally lost for words .
Unreal, amazing.
I love to build unusual stuff , but man have you taken things to a surreal level .
Workmanship is amazing.
Please keep the videos coming.
I am 100% blown away .
Ive lived 5 minutes from perris my whole life and I had never heard of this legend, this is super rad.
This is quite astonishing, I think it’s one of the most impressive (one man) projects I’ve ever seen
Will power, grit, perseverance, commitment, relentless, drive, can do attitude, you sir are a force of nature!
The story of how this boat was stolen from this hard working man is so heartbreaking and even after he got it back he ended up having to sell it is so sad. He truly is a amazing builder and person.

As a former fitter/welder for Palmer Johnson Yachts in Sturgeon Bay, WI...you gave me some hella flashbacks.😍💓
But we used the pink, lightweight, fairing compound by Awl-Grip.
Bravo, my man. Bravo.✊🏻👑
I dunno what to say...This is DIY at another level - entirely...!
I think you can go aboard for a cruise I think they charter out of Mexico. The rest of the story is even more incredible but I wont spoil it for you,
Self made aluminiumn profile windows benders and pleumatic sander helper are top notch! 👍👍👍
I've built some cool stuff, but a project of that scale, undertaken by one man simply amazes me.
Insane!! Absolutely insane. Motivational, American, Passion, it's everything.
I am so impressed. You are a remarkable person. I can’t imagine a better captain than the guy who built the boat with his own hands. I hope you inspire others.
This is incredible,As a carpenter I know the work this man put into this, absolutely mind blowing
Bravo sir, I've dreamed of doing something like this but haven't had the money and or the time at the same time. That is definitely a great lifetime achievement
The time, the money, the know how, the skill, the patience. Just wow.
Only 1 man built this in only 5 years?! Hard to believe. The custom sanders are brilliant! If I had $1 dollar for every time I said "WOW" out loud, I could probably afford to buy this work of art!
Exactly , as much as I’m impressed with the boat I love the sander and so would my shoulders.
@@kene6838 Lol! Mine too.
high level human for sure.
I think you have a guy named Noah in your family tree. This is beyond amazing. Superhuman!
Beyond incredible patience, a man can have
I think I saw this boat parked in Dana Point Marina in CA back in the 90's when I was in the Marines. My girlfriend and I would come from Camp Pendleton down to Dana Point to put my Seadoo in the water, and really enjoyed it there. I saw this cat and could never imagine it was built in the desert in someones yard.
Wow! So cool I saw this. When I was in High School, I was coming out of Canyon Lake once and saw your yacht in your front yard. I had to check this out. I stopped and walked down your driveway and met you at the stern. You invited me aboard to have a look and you explained to me me how you were going to transport it to the sea. After High School, I joined the Army. When I was finished, I drove past your place a few times but never saw the yacht and always wondered how it all worked out for you. Thank you for being so cool to a nosey High School kid fascinated by your build and thanks for taking the time to show me around and explain it all to me.
This is great! Looks better than any factory catamaran I've ever seen. Extremely impressive, indeed!
I am completely blown away. It took me five years to build a kit car. This is astounding. My hat is off to you sir.
Allot of time, money and passion went into this build. This man deserves to enjoy the fruits of his labor.
That sanding machine you made is genius! This whole video is fantastic!
Anyone whose lats, axillae, teres majores and pecs have yet to recover from years of longboarding would agree!
Good Lord what a project!!
I Respect the ingenuity and the sheer guttural fortitude it must have takin to bring this beautiful lady to fruition!
Please make more videos.
You know.... in all that spare time you must have on your hands.
WELL FREAKING DONE SIR!!!
Thank you very much!

I just can't imagine where your self belief came from.
I will remember your example whenever I doubt myself again.
There is no way I would have painted that boat after all that work I would have polished it 👍unbelievable
I hope you patented those sanding devices! Your talents are BOUNDLESS!
Wow... Just wow.
This entire video is a story of a masterpiece, but the video is a masterpiece in and of itself.
The entire time i felt a sense of nostalgia and liminal space, like I was witnessing someone else's dreams... even had me going "wow" out loud a few times.
What a wild experience.
I say this as someone who lives in a sailboat full time... You're a trooper for what you've accomplished, don't let anyone tell you any differently.
I absolutely can't wait to see this story!!! I also can't believe I didn't hear about it back when it was happening. ABSOLUTE RESPECT!
Incredibly inspiring, hard rough labor, by hand to perfection, absolutely amazing 🤩
You ought to be given a noble prize for “Tenacity”. Amazing… over the top…! My vocabulary isn’t big enough. 😱😎😇🇺🇸. And… it looks good. The lines are classic. Beautiful boat and well built.
