Mom=mother nature. Loving the Reactions dude keep it up! I see people getting mad in the comments that you didn't interpret it "correctly". Y'all can shut up fr. The point of Tool is that it makes you think, go ahead and offer your interpretation, but don't chastise a dude for not understanding a Tool song on his first listen, ya'll probably heard this shit hundreds of times.

Honestly. I think he was pretty spot on other than the Learn To Swim bit. The Jungian aspect is 100% dead on, but Maynard is asking for a cleansing of people literally. Praying for the big one to drop LA into the ocean and do the world a favor…. Thus creating Arizona Bay 🤣

1000% agree. Tool takes patience and multiple times of hearing to really feel what he is saying. Even after many people think they know what it means, Maynard says it means something else. But that's the beauty of it. People find their own meanings as in poetry.

The song is about the inevitable breaking off of LA into, as Bill Hicks said, "the Pacific Bowl to be flushed away like the turd city it is, leaving nothing but a cool, beautiful serenity called... Arizona Bay."

By "mother' he means Mother Nature. The one that will bring the floods, the tidal waves, the meteor, the earthquake. "Mom's comin' 'round to put it back the way it ought to be"
Unfortunately, I don't see your angle of him being benevolent or trying to help everyone. To me, his "Learn to swim" is a threat. "Learn to swim, cause California will become Arizona Bay"
He's merciless in this song. He keeps calling out people and saying "it's going to happen, and it's deserved, so you better learn to swim, LA will be not here soon".
I appreciate a different perspective tho.
    Cheers man

This is my favorite album of all time. I never imagined back in 96 that we would still be analyzing it 25 years later. Even a song as simple in meaning as this is such a masterpiece. You allude to it when the tension breaks, the song literally gives way at the "praying for mayhem" line. Just as Maynard wants the Andreas fault line to give way, it is beautiful, giving you that feeling of mother earth taking back everything like she always does, to reset what we have done. Geniuses.

Ya, this is still "angry" Tool, but you can see the growth in them already. The title being a mixture of anima and enima is meant to mean "the cleansing of the soul". Hence the repetition of "flush it all down." Which brings a second, hilarious meaning to "learn to swim".

Love your interpretation of this. That’s the beauty of a tool song people can interpret it in so many different ways and find meaning.
Generally speaking, what he saying is that he hopes California will fall into the ocean and that we can all learn to swim in Arizona Bay. When he refers to mom, most people believe he’s asking mother nature to flush it all away and make things how it used to be before the ridiculousness of LA.

Funny to an OGT ( Original Gangta Tool ) from back in 93 from the 1st ep ( lyrics from the song I requested ) that in 25 yrs I have thoughts that attach to a certain feeling that I have to identify with language ( same process used to create these pieces written with duality with several interpretations of a feeling into the appropriate words ) as the Music 🎶 already has evolved into something more than a song. Maynard said once that can give you the feeling of a Devine/ religious experience or the way having a baby or falling in love gives you butterflies or looking at the sunset over a beach.. Or the balance is the feeling of mental anguish or being torn of emotion like a napkin you pull off the roll.
Your perspective on learn to swim & what it means is one that, even with 7 different Tool chatrooms on fb I have never heard it referencing that meaning yet!

  • @jethrofloyd67
    @jethrofloyd67 2 года назад +2

This was the first Tool song I ever heard, and I was hooked right at the "praying for rain" section. An absolutely beautiful passage after that savage tribal "learn to swim" section... No one composes music like Tool and no one can deliver these concepts like they do, and I could hear that in one song, so I started buying their albums one at a time and I love rediscovering them through friends and youtubers like yourself.
Like the two words combined, an enema of our anima, this whole album is more or less about shedding skin and dealing with your darkness in order to move forward...among probably other things because Tool isn't about telling a story so much as exploring a concept, which is absolutely perfect for overthinking and you wouldn't believe the rabbit holes you can fall down in the Tooliverse. So carry on analyzing as much as you want, you're on the right track and are coming into this with alot more knowledge than most..about Jung and the biblical references. You're doing great man, spiral out 🤘

“Mom” is referring to Mother Nature here. Praying for LA (aka. California) (aka. The state of mind and way of life that he’s irritated with) to metaphorically break off at its fault line and be “flushed” into the ocean, like using an enema.
Then learning to swim when it’s all flushed away, representing learning how to live differently and “welcome any change.”
“See you down in Arizona bay”, when California has fallen into the ocean and Arizona has a new ocean-side view. Arizona Bay is also an album name by the comedian Bill Hicks, who Maynard references often.

Maynard's mom saga, I'm still pushing for this, his mom had a brain aneurysm at age 11, was wheel chair bound for 27 years (10,000 days).. so the songs go in the order of Jimmy, Judith (APC), Wings for Marie part 1, 10,000 days part 2... I'm excited

Ugh... I've spent the past couple hours debating evil people (in the hopes that I say something that gets them thinking) in the comment sections of different, vile youtube videos... this was a much needed refreshment, love you bro! Honestly at this point I might suggest you just go through in order listening to all their songs, if that's not what you're going to do then I suggest you rock out to 7empest, especially after this song

It's interesting to hear your interpretation of the lyrics, & how you put a positive spin on them, likely because you try to see the positive in people & things. As others have mentioned, the song is about hoping that California has a massive earthquake, separating it from the continental US, resulting in the proverbial "Arizona Bay" mentioned by Bill Hicks. The survivors would have to "Learn To Swim", or they won't be survivors for long.

  • @adampadilla74
    @adampadilla74 Год назад +3

Learn to swim and see you in Arizona bay is a reference to the results of the Cascadia Subduction Zone Earthquake that is over due (9+ on the Richter Scale). The quake could potentially destroy or sink California making Arizona beach front property.

I love how profound of an impact that Tool is making.
You said you think negatively first but you were speaking about "learn to swim" in a good way. Think more of Hating LA and wishing the San Andrea's fault Ling gives way to create "Arizona Bay" ( Maynard moved from LA to Arizona because he doesn't do well in crowds. Anxiety is super real...)

I like watching your Tool journey man, altough it baffles me how any person in the western hemisphere can not have listened to Tool before, since it has been part of my life for over 25 years now. And you're right, they have had a huge impact, I have fond memories about the days when I used to go out and was thrilled whenever Tool came up. I have asked for Tool so many times in a club where they play this kind of music.

The ultimate Dis song this album was built around The comedian rutine by the late Bill Hicks .when California falls in the ocean, we can meet up in the newly made Az. Bay. Maynard now lives over the hill from me in Central Az.

I think learn to swim is referring to the coming tidal wave that will wash it all away. I got into Tool from my son, when I was 50, I now own all of their albums. Some songs definitely gives me goose bumps. I love how Maynard is able to convey so much emotion in his singing. His voice can be beautiful and haunting at the same time.

Ænima is also a play on the word Enema. Hence all the "flushing" imagery. He wants the enema (tsunami/flood) to wash away the shit (LA/The superficial people in LA). I don't think it just means LA specifically though, it's just the prime example of a Place full of superficial people, materialism, sensationalism (circus sideshow).

I always read learn to swim as mostly literal and also metaphorical as in the floods coming learn to swim. I love that you've given me a new perspective on learn to swim, encouraging people to rise above the figurative shit being flushed. I'd always considered it to be a mocking or condescending way of basically laughing at dipshits for drowning to death during Armageddon. That's a line I hadn't read between.

Now this is the beautiful thing about listening to Tool. It's been more than 15 years since I heard this song the first time, and I have always just seen this song as an aggressive, big fuck you to everyone that Maynard describes in the song, and I have always seen the lyrics more wishful of those "fake" people to just drown in the flood the lyrics want Mother Earth to bring into the world. Your view of the lyrics and the song has COMPLETELY changed my mind on how I view this song. After all these years it seems now so incredibly obvious how all the lyrics chanting "learn to swim" and so on are actually uplifting, attempting to push anyone and everyone into improving themselves.
It's been great seeing how you perceive these songs that I and many others have loved for years, thank you for sharing that experience with us!

Arizona Bay is referring to the theory that a massive San Andreas fault line earthquake will eventually turn California into an island off the coast of Arizona.
Also, the use of mother in the song is referring to mother nature.

As others mentioned, this song is heavily inluenced by one of the stand up routines of Bill Hicks. This whole album was dedicated to him, after his death. Since you also do some comedy reactions, you should definitely check him out. In my opinion, only George Carlin was above Bill Hicks when it came to mixing comedy with social criticism. It was real shame he died at such a young age...

I love your interpretation of this song, and will look at it differently from now on.
I always took it to be Maynard sortof taunting the plastic masses like "learn to swim, the wave is coming", but to read it as a benevolent warning to try to be better is interesting. I love that you could pull a positive message from this song.
Also, I immediately identified what he meant by 'Arizona Bay', having grown up in Phoenix and joked about having beach-front property once The Big One sucks California into the Pacific. Super morbid, but it always made me chuckle.
