used market. still hard to find, but i've seen a few decent condition ones on eBay. there are also other android based handheld consoles (not that Sony xperia...thing). i have something called a GPD XD.

Yeah...but the GPD is too expensive. $200 max for what that handheld is capable of. I would rather just buy A Nintendo Switch when that comes out. When the GPD device can can handle *New* games 720p at medium settings...it will be worth $200. High settings at 720p....$300-$400. Old games like Fallout and Skyrim at low-medium settings at playable speed for $370 last time I checked. Chinese seller as well? Yeah...way overpriced for now. Nintedo Switch+Skyrim remastered $360 and the graphics will be insane compared to the GPD.

There is a need of more initiative from phone (or maybe, not necessarily phone) manufacturers, if there was more manufactures making these kind of consoles there would be more developers making games for these kind of consoles.

there's also the Smach Z that's a hand held pc, thats coming out later this year but it's probably gonna cost more than the GPD WIN and only performs slightly better than the GPD. I agree with Patrick the GPD is too expensive for what it can do, it only gets about 20-25 frames on Skyrim at lowest settings. Some youtubers who were sent a free GPD will tell you that's playable because they didn't pay for it. As a consumer why would i even waste $350+ on a device that can not get you a stable 30 frames on an older game?

Odd question, If you were given the £99 Windows 10 tablet and The nvidia shield which one would you prefer to use? I ask as my laptop recently died (msi ge 60 2pc apache) and wish to replace it with somthing fairly powerful and portable. Also if you don't mind me asking what Motorbike do you ride? :)

Limelight is the same thing as gamestream, except it can run on devices other than the Shield, I believe. Splashtop, as shown in the video, has considerably more latency problems than the two former.

I'm playing it on my GS3... and my GS2... and my GS1... and my HTC One... and my Nexus 7... I think you get me? If people want to emulate NDS/GBA/PSX/PSP games on a Mobile Device they can pretty much do it on the large majority of them currently out. No point in mentioning something like that as anyone who wants to emulate already knows they can on pretty much any smart phone these days.

Yeah but playing any kind of emulated game especially Arcade MAME games SUCK the big one with touch screen phone controls. Comfortable physical controls built in FTW. Then there is the better stereo speakers, as well. Yes any phone/tab works, but the experience is wanting to say the least.

I love my Nvidia Shield, even managed to get my hands on it in the UK which was nice. Had to upgrade my router though, but to be fair i was only using a crappy £20 router before hand. I'm currently using one of the recommended routers on the list which is the Asus RT-N66U Dark Knight (Awesome name) and it works perfectly! I have a steam library of 177 games, not to mention non steam games which you can add and run perfectly :) Defiantly worth the purchase for me. Great vid Linus.

That currently isn't possible with current data streaming speeds, but something Nvidea is know to be working on is a system called Grid. This involves having high powered 'gaming servers' running games constantly and you can access them on devices like shield from anywhere with a wifi or 4g connection. I'm not sure that all my facts are right, but that is the main idea, or at least what was presented at Pax.

Hey Linus! Just wanted to say thanks for convincing me to buy a Shield. It's been a great device so far and I'm really enjoying it! I was a little disappointed by last night's nVidia conference but maybe nVidia will announce some cool new Gamestream/Shadow Play/GeForce Experience features later on in the show. Enjoy CES!

I know this video is old and so this comment is unlikely to get read.
I was considering getting a shield for gaming round the house and in the yard, and for the occasional trips on the train/bus. I do not have a Nvidia graphics card for my pc (amd user) so I cant do the streaming as I understand it. However I am very interested in the shield as a platform for my emulated games, namely snes/psp games. I know that it runs stock android and I have emulators on my mobile as well but the touch screen interface leaves alot to be desired. Anyone with experience playing emulated games on the shield, I would like to hear your opinions!

Drezzek01 Hey man, here's an answer for you. I ordered the newer shield tablet, and it is due to arrive tomorrow. I can give a better answer or perhaps a video when I spend more time with it. For current answers here it is: I owned the shield portable (one in this video) and returned it. At the time it didn't work with my gtx 780m notebook so I didn't see a purpose to have it. I did use it as an emulator though. Runs nintendo 64 and DS emulators extremely well, no stuttering at all, which for you would be great! As far as streaming goes: There may be a solution out there, but at the time you're out of luck unless you purchase an NVIDIA GPU. IF an NVIDIA GPU is not currently in your budget, then I would still recommend this to you. Emulations are great, except portrait mode apps are a nightmare on this. Finally, there is something called NVIDIA Gird. IT IS IN BETA! You need a 5Ghz dual-band router to use it. What it does is, as long as you live in the US, Canada, or western Europe (not germany currently), then you get access to a bunch of AAA titles such as Dead Island, Batman: Arkham Origins, Borderlands 1&2, Saints Row: The Third, etc. YOU DON'T NEED A GAMING PC TO USE NVIDIA GRID!!! IT'S BEAUTIFUL!!!! It's free access to all SHIELD owners until June 30th, 2015. At that point they may take it down for a bit, or go straight into more servers and then a monthly or annual fee for it. If you have anymore questions, please don't hesitate to ask. I will be more than happy to answer any question you may have :)

***** How's the game streaming over internet? When MGS5 hits, it'd be a dream to play it at uni/ on the go. I'm Kinda upset that Linus only talked about streaming around the house.
If I want to play my PC games at home, I'll do it on my PC. I want this to play my compatible PC games anywhere I get great wifi.

Drezzek01 If you're just looking for a better emulator experience, there are bluetooth controllers you can buy for your phone.www.amazon.com/Wireless-Bluetooth-Controller-iPhone-Samsung/dp/B00GNXMXA8/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1439502074&sr=8-4&keywords=ipega . I bought this one, and I quite enjoy it. The clamp is large enough to hold my Galaxy Grand Prime, which is a 5 inch screen.

I've had a Shield since it first came out and i must say that it was MUCH better in its infancy. once nVidia provided the ability to access your PC remotely (WAN) it all went downhill; latency increased, reliability went down and compression went up. Before nVidia gave us the innternet gamestream option, we simply used a VPN forwarder and it worked GREAT.
Now that nVidia is using your login to connect to your computer, i have lost the ability to search for multiple computers on my network and to log in simply with a generated code for pairing.
Sorry to anyone who buys one now, its a great product, but nothing like it used to be.
if you downgrade to the older firmware, youll lose some battery life and you'll feel the fan running, but it will work better (you'll also have to downgrade your nVidia experience on your computer.)

I saw your video reviews of the Nvidia Shield & the Steam box, I like them both plus the way you showed us the fps in it, I had notice that when it was connected, it ran great but when it was wireless, the fps drops and didn't have the best rate to play, but all in all, I loved it, I will definitely get me both of them in the future.

I got a shield a couple years ago. Personally I liked it but it got old fast. However, they continued to update it and it's got half life 2, portal, mount & blade, and games like Crysis 3 have been announced. I have a GTX 650 graphics card so Im able to stream on it, however, my router is shit. The thing is, now there's a thing called grid and if you don't know what it is just imagine a Netflix for games. Even if you don't plan on streaming from your PC, it's a great buy ;)

things like Nvidia Grid and splashtop are likely to be the future I think. We already went from a "make every desktop able to do everything" to "virtualize ALL the things", so gaming is the next step. with advancements in wireless protocols we have the ability to maximize performance/power ratios and hardware costs. Also things like SoftXpand are a big boost (my computer is pretty much powerful enough to run 3 1920x1080 games at once performance-wise)

I bought the Shield expecting to use it randomly around the house when I don't really feel like sitting in front of my computer but I feel like playing a game. Currently my wireless solution sucks and the wifi doesn't pick up on it where i'm at usually, and using my PC as an access point helps, but it's not fast enough. Found myself playing N64 games on it more which it does beautifully. My only gripe is I had to get my own file browser. Rotation Control app is also a must to lock in landscape.

The Shield is pretty nice and it does show that the Handheld market still exists. Now we just need more things happening in the scene, which could be helped by the next Shield iteration in some way if it had mobile data and NVIDIA encouraged devs to make games for Tegra Zone/Shield Store in a dedicated fashion as opposed to having them run through Google Play first.

The Shield would be a killer product if they implemented a convertible design to the display so you can simply attach a compatible smartphone onto the controller part and use it that way. While charging the smartphone and even possibly utilizing some of the smartphones processing power to run the entire show.

We have a great router from Centurylink and 2 PC's compatible with streaming (one with GTX 660 and one with a GTX Titan) but no matter what configuration we try it always comes up with "cannot stream games due to network interference." So I guess the router isn't compatible with streaming.

there are a lot of fresh titles too, i've just cited ports... ravensword for example, anomaly (already mentioned) was released about 1 year ago, another good title is little big war game and its sequel, real racing series (yeah i know EA but these are really good racing games), dungeon defenders , a lot of indie titles maybe not so popular but really well made and released also on 3ds. Speaking of controls, the majority of games support HID devices and x360pad so the compatibility already exist.

What this needs is good exclusive games, imo. Android games are a start, but they don't really tax what the SoC can do because they have to be optimized around all the SoCs from the last two years to gain market share. i want Nvidia to partner with someone to make a game from the ground-up for the Shield and Tegra 4.

Are you able to run this over two different Wi-fi networks? Say my PC is at home on my home WiFi but I am at Uni on my University's Wi-fi, would I still be able to game stream?

+SirMaxwellOf Day that is not true anymore. Nvidia updated the shield a while ago to allow for game streaming anywhere as long as you have the internet to support it. They recommend 5mbits up.

Can splashtop be installed on nvidia shield? If that can be done then you can stream games from your amd card or any other nvidia card.

I believe in centralized computing power and dumb terminals in different form factors that feed off it, of course with high bandwidth/low latency home networks. I talk a little about it in my upcoming steam machines video.

I think it's a wonderful product and it is the future of gaming. If it was selling for $200 I buy it in a heartbeat, but I completely understand $300 price tag.

i do like the idea of the shield and mobile gaming is great. My thoughts and question is with nvidia grid and this product. Would it be possible to access a pc game through the grid wireless through a network or possible mobile network like a 4g?

I would love one of these but I can't carry this extra weight around in my backpack (due to all the heavy books and laptop required for class).
Is there any controller that I could hook up to my Note 3 in order to game? Any recommendations? Thanks :D
