  • The NVIDIA Shield is probably the most controversial device I've seen come out of NV in a while. Some people think it's great, some people think it's horrible. I'm of the mind that this is the beginning of the end for traditional handhelds and NVIDIA is forging an incredibly exciting new path. Also so far I LOVE my Shield. I've been playing with it a lot since I filmed this video and I'm pretty stoked on it so far. Full review coming later.

They made the nvidia tablet which iz also pretty great and they made the Nvidia Shield Tv Pro 2015 and 2017 versions that can stream games even better than the first 2 ones and comes with the gaming controller. The 2017 version comes with the new controller and its the best for gaming by far.

@@Josteldrasfurion They did release one... but not under that name. They instead partnered up with Nintendo and rebranded it. (Bet you can't guess which console that looks very similar in layout to the Shield 2 prototypes and has identical hardware) - I thought when I first saw the Switch that it was ripping off the "console mode" docking and everything from NVidia, but I was wrong. They weren't ripping it off... they licensed it. The Shield Tablet was the only concession Nintendo allowed, to prevent direct competition between identical hardware platforms, as part of their license. Sucks, though, because I would LOVE to get my hands on a Shield 2. I just recently got a Shield Portable because I found a really good cheap used deal... and man. I love it. It's sooo smooth. Everything I have thrown at it - from emulators up to and including N64/Dreamcast and streaming AAA PC games in ultra/epic settings smooth as butter... it's crazy. Finally something that WON'T end up in the drawer with the ill-fated Android sticks/FireTV/miracast/steam link/etc. devices I've tried to game from across the house. Plus the free streaming for pretty much any Steam game I've tried so far that I own and a few other games for free from GeForce Now is pretty sweet. Plug in a keyboard and mouse and I don't NEED to install them on my PC. Saving about 1.1TB now. (If I can set every game to ultra and still get >60fps? Why waste the space? The GPUs they use for streaming are Tesla P40 cards, so...)

    • @Tuberuser187
      @Tuberuser187 10 лет назад +15

Probably because the sockets wear fast with repeated insertions and you end up with a shitty connection or the damn thing falling out.
The metal used in the contacts is often very thin and wears quickly, even otherwise quality products often overlook it and use whatever is in the parts bin at the factory.

If you tried it, You would notice that delay is pretty minimal (compared to the input lag on your typical console+hdtv)
and just because its a phone display doesn't mean you can't notice the details. You can definitely see fps difference on a small screen. And also being its a 720p display means more AA will be needed.

It's not specifically a Keplar GPU requirement. It's an H.264 encoder requirement, which happens to only be available on the Kepler+ cards. If they were to implement something for the chipsets before Keplar, it would drastically lower the performance of your games because it would have to be processes on GPU instead of a dedicated H.264 encoder.

A device as large as the shield has no excuse for not using a fullsize USB port. And I would love to see a specification for charging ports on devices you often use while charging that specifies the size and shape of the hood, so you can use the hood to relieve tension instead of having the actual plug jerking around.

I think an interesting thing to check out is how well the hdmi to TV works, because then a Shield could potentially be an alternative to say, the steam box. It would allow you to play your pc games from your rig from your couch... as long as you have a cable long enough.

I'd like it if you took an RPG that you enjoy (specifically one that requires a lot of keybinds) and see if you can find some kind of comfortable way of maximizing the number of unique actions you can do on the device. Maybe making one of the R/L buttons a modifier, or something else creative.

PhysX is a library. It has many bits and bobs that are available in the SDK (software development kit). Not ALL games use it, and it must be integrated by the developer to be available for use by your GPU/CPU. Just trying to be helpful. There are some good developer resources on the Physx Developer site to help you understand this process.

You know, the smaller screen is great for 720p, the pixel density makes it easier to not-use AA and that can increase performance (I'm one of those people who turns off AA if it doesnt make enough of a difference in picture quality so my opinion on the small screen may be different than most)

The D-Pad is my biggest complaint, it isn't uncomfortable or difficult to use, but it slides around in the slot it's in as if it desperately needs to be glued. Other than that it's spectacular when I want to lay down in bed for an hour and play skyrim. It's not fast enough for any of the twitch games yet, but definitely an enjoyable experience for playing RPG's and strategy games.

Since you have to be on the same network I don't quite see a use for the video streaming when you could just play the game on a much larger 1080p+ monitor. Also limiting it to Kepler GPUs could add to the total cost as most would have to upgrade. I'm fine with my gaming rig and Droid DNA.

Finally got one! Man... 5 years since this video had me almost drooling over it... haha. Crazy to go back and watch it again. Every time I thought about it and went online and looked, I'd see them for well over $200 still... and couldn't do it. Just... why? Why is it not dropping in price? Well... now that I have one? I don't ask that anymore. Found a really cheap deal at a local pawn shop (there's one by a university near me that always has good deals on electronics and stuff - partly because they don't know what half of it is. I got an almost new AC1750 router (going for $130 used at the time) there a little over a year ago there for $30 there because nobody knew how to factory reset it, and they didn't have the password. Or the ability to google instructions, it would seem. It was barely used, even in the box with the manual and everything, heh. Also got a very cheap deal on a laptop because they had looked it up incorrectly, resulting in getting 3 month old (since release) laptop for $400 when it was $1300+ everywhere else. Always a good place to look, pawns by uni's. I've seen Shield portables there before, just never for

Apparently, you can stream over VPN on the Internet. That would mean you can play anywhere you have Internet access while your PC at home is up and running. Plus it obviously play Android games locally. Add to this tons of Android emulators for retro gaming and Internet/Facebook games and it start to look much more than a useless game pad with a screen.

I'm confused on something. Doesn't vita remote play allow you to play games on an entire different network? In other words, play a game on vita at your friends from a ps3/4 which is at your house? I think this would be a lot more useful if it could do that. I think this is exciting for technical reasons, but is not practical at all. If I'm already home, why would I use this thing when my PC is right there?" and is the luxury of playing 50ft away on your couch worth this price? I'd argue no.

He has so many cards that he has been sent to review that he could just plug one in and use Shield. Well, he could build an entire PC just to stream to Shield. This is clearly not going to be an issue for Linus, he knows what he is doing.

Well, if the device is heavy enough it might start to exhaust your arms after long play sessions (I can't imagine playing on this thing in one sitting for longer than an hour). It might not seem like it would, but some users might experience some uncomfortably using this product.

Hopefully the Shield 2 will have smaller bezels and screen size closer to 6 inches. 5 inches isn't that big for a mobile device anymore, especially when it's laid back like in Shield.

Incorrect, 400 cards support direct-X 11 and open-GL 4.4 and depending on the type they can have GDDR3 up to GDDR5.
And none of this would prevent the shield from running.

With Geforce Now available, I wonder if I can set up a wifi hotspot network from my phone and use it to gamestream on the go

I wish there was a box you could buy that just had the streaming functionality that you could keep by your TV. It'd be like a steam box that is powered by a beefy machine.

I think that for now you have to be on the same network. (BUT who knows, it might change)
For the game streaming, well, they say it's still in BETA, so you will have to expect a non-flawless use of the streaming functionality of Shield.
And for how the streaming works, I don't know, but surely someone would be kind enough to answer you and inform the community :)

How's the D-pad for fast menu navigation?
360's D-pad is too terrible for playing PSO on, and I'd imagine it's nasty for anything where you're trying to get through multidirectional menus quickly with no delays between menu inputs.

But they could sell more shields if they allowed its usage with other brands, just like PhysX, only some games use it because not everyone has an Nvidia card, especially now that the price to performance ratio is on AMD.

The problem is that it DOESN'T WORK WELL with older GPUs.
Kepler, like Linus said has built-in h264 encoding, which reduces latency by a huge amount. Older GPUs don't have this; making it far harder to make it work properly.
