My review / gameplay of the Nvidia Shield! Is it for you?
The Nvidia Shield is an interesting handheld gaming device. It runs Android 4.2 with the super fast Tegra 4 SoC inside along with physical controls and a built-in 5 inch screen. It plays PC games via streaming if you have an Nvidia GTX 650 or better graphics card, Android games like Riptide GP 2 and emulators for the PlayStation, N64, Super Nintendo and many more.

Love it! I'd appreciate a bit more vertical resolution for video editing but for most everything else especially gaming it's awesome!
I think a detachable screen like the ultrabook with all of the hardware in the screen portion of the device would be a better allocation of the hardware and weight

I would definitely go for this over the PS Vita or 3DS any day! I mean, you can have ROMs on this thing! That's fucking awesome! What would make it even greater would be if the screen detatched so you could then use it as a phone!

In my opinion Nvidia should have made the screen detachable so it's isn't such a pain to use in terms of portability.

sadly I got two GTX 680's and no Upgrade plan.. I got the Shield and they have greatly improved the streaming capabilities and the Tegra Library. the shield is pretty much worth it on my end.

the nvidia sheild uses similar hardware to the Switch, mainly because the hardware is made by the same company, Nvidia.

So you can play anywhere, like in the bed, couch or toilet. I know i want this but i have to think about if the price is worth it or not since i'm not rich or anything and have to make priorities. But i sure want it.
This is an amazing device, the controller is heavily supported by a lot of core android games and it is very comfortable and very powerful. It is worth the price if you plan on using it all the time

Just the fact that I can play n64 games on the go is a huge plus for me!
i hope this is what replaces traditional hand held consoles. hell it would be cool if they made upgradeable gpus and ram for it. if you could actually take it apart. i know that is a bit extreme, but imagine this was the future of handheld consoles. you could take advantage of the raw gpu power provided by this, and have games for that specific device! but still have it open platform so anyone could develop for it.

A small screen the size of an Xbox controller (extremely light) that can be attached on top of the controller. The screen has an opening on the back that you can place your Xbox 360 games inside of. You are able to play (only) games, play online/talk to friends ect...
Its basically an Xbox 360 portable, but instead your able to attach it to your controller.
The screen is chargeable, long lasting power.

CubingIsFun the switch is more powerful than this. switch cpu clocks over 2 GHz and has 4 gigs of ram. the custom tegra processor is better than the tegra 4

The nvidia shield is quite bigger than the xbox360 controller. I think saying it's an original xbox "fatty" controller with a screen on it would be more accurate.

This thing is pretty convenient, basically another portable gaming device like the psp and 3ds expect running android. Can't wait to see what improvements the new one would have

The shield is in an interesting position. It's basically: if you're not struggling financially, it's the best, while conversely if you are, it's the worst. Fortunately, I'm not in a struggling position with my 660TI card. I'm looking forward to getting one.

this is a really beautiful device. i wonder why it didnt sell well. must be because they didnt advertise it enough as a gaming device. people consider it a simple android phone with controller. if only it was available in my country i would definitely buy 1

Did you guys notice that in the past Austin kinda sounds depressed, but not in the new reviews?
One of the things that could make this even better is make the screen detachable. It would make it easier to play android games that require touch, and less difficult when using apps like Google or RUclips. I still like the way it is now though. XD
What I really want, is console the size of Vita but with 1080p screen and top end spec. Vita is amazing, but its 540p screen and mediocre spec leave alot to be desired. And I want this console to run some Linux based custom OS, not just Android.
Valve should make one. Imagine a super powerfull, ergonomic and pocketable console with 5 or 6 inch 1080p screen running SteamOS which will enable you to play all those amazing Steam games on the go. I'd be sweet!

Two main things you need to check. First, laptop or desktop? If it's a laptop, then automatic no. Then you need to make sure it's a GTX 660 or higher. All 700 Series cards should work.
One thing you forgot to mention was that it works with the Parrot AR drone 2.0. It also increases the range to. This is the ONLY controller that does this. I bought it just to fly my AR and Bebop drones! Being to play games is just a bonus for me :D
I got the shield for Christmas last year(now its 2014) and it was great! It came with 50% battery when I opened up the box so I could play it immediately. It is a great little device, and I soon will be buying myself a geforce gtx660 graphics card so I can stream games.
I personally prefer my GPD XD. It's able to handle most things the Shield can handle, works just as good for emulating, is more portable, has a better battery, and is just in the shape of a 3ds XL so it's nice and familiar

I like the shield portable and the shield tablet. There both great devices. I have a few vids on both devices. I also plan to upload a full review on both devices.
This is a pretty cool little gaming console. Beautiful battery life. I wish my phone had that....
i feel that with each of the handheld consoles the common problem is the better the hardware the weaker the software from a exclusive standpoint

I really don't see the point in streaming. Not to sound condescending, but when are you ever going to use it? What reason would there be for you to leave your pc, wait for the connection because it's probably not an instant thing, and play for a while in another room? If something is pulling you away from your pc, are you really going to have time to play the thing.
Even though I like the idea of an emulator box, most people already have 1(a smartphone) if not 2 (smartphone and a pc) emulator boxes already. Phones have bluetooth controllers like MOGA and micro HD MI adapters, so the only thing the shield has on phones is a cooling unit.
Also, if streaming were to expand outside of the home, which the shield is limited to, there would be a latency problem. What's the point in streaming when you can just carry a physical or digital copy? There is no latency there. So why suffer through the bumpy road that will never reach the payoff of what we already own? That was a bit off topic, but I just wanted to share my opinion.

you can use a Ethernet cable with the shield if you purchase an OTG Ethernet to micro USB adapter.
I think the Nvidia Shield is pretty awesome since I have full joystick control and it combines both touchscreen and PC gaming tech.

I have had a 3ds since around Christmas 2011, but now i am a pc gamer and this would be something i'd also want.
Now I gotta say this what I call a portable gaming device , I have a ZELDA limited edition 3DS and a VITA and I love them both plus I love emulators but the ability to play emulated games on a handheld device such as this and with ease is quiet amusing actually , thanks Austin for the review , I'm going to buy one because of you.
I agree...the 3DS and Vita both have to be hacked to support emulators, but the android systems come with open source support already, making them too easy to slap an emulator onto! This is definitely a good choice for those new to emulators on the go (with the exception of laptops, lawl).

I feel like this either plays mobile games which you don't really need the controls for, or retro games that you don't really need the killer specs for. I absolutely adore my 3DS though

I would compare this to a controller, it has the same but ten layout and d-pad and left stick switched, and triggers are smaller. It's a great portable device
