I remember being one of the small group of people actually being super excited for this thing when it came out and even pre-ordering it at gamestop. I'd still have it if the micro usb port usb hadn't crapped out on me. It was such a good emulation and San Andreas machine for me. I'd love to have one just for my collection but there isn't much point in actually using one these days.
I'm facing the exact problem, that micro usb port isn't made to last, one thing is for sure, the shield is ahead of it's time, giving birth to hand held gaming/emulating even before the switch. and what do you know? the switch is derived form the Tegra SOC inside the shield.
These are still (very)worth it in my opinion . Yes there are more powerful devices but personally I prefer the Shield over the K1 / Shield Tablet . Something about it's design "held up" where as originally it was thought to be kind of a beast. Today's gaming landscape is a lot different and as Nes points out, remote play /streaming has vastly improved over the years. On the emulation side there are devices that can do much better now but if you are looking for a device that can still do a "little bit of everything" and has great sound , portability and versatility these are not yet "obsolete". I have three of these and one that I have as a backup as these won't last forever. If you get a chance to get one of these cheap , it's no Wikipad7 lol it is still very much a solid handheld as long as you know your expectations of it. Lastly, because I still believe these are worth it , I've actually written NVIDIA to possibly see about one last update to help preserve these and keep them compatible with apps. Defiantly don't want these to wind up as e-waste.
I got one of these sometime in 2014 and remember kicking ass on Modern Combat 4 because everyone else was still using touchscreen. This was the best handheld ever made imo, but only for the first 2 years or so of its life. Once the updates stopped it quickly faded. Now the problems with the screen, battery life and sound its no longer worth the price of admission. A very short lived absolute beast of a handheld that Nvidia should have followed up on! Damn Nintendo.
i think it'd be cool with these huge waves of Handheld pcs coming out if nvidia went out and made a Nvidia Shield portable 2 with a lot of upgrades. with DLSS running games natively would be awesome. idk if they would do it since they are working with Nintendo on the Switch and possibly(if the rumors are fully true), on the Switch 2 as well.
Everything you said is right on. Way ahead of it's time with it's multi-function. I guess the natural successor to the Shield is the (new) Razor Edge. Although it wont be as comfortable to hold. Or the Logitech G Cloud? ah, maybe not...
My Shield Portable's display ribbon cable was damaged after years of use. Unfortunately I wasn't able to get it repaired or find a replacement screen. This thing was absolutely fantastic.
Yeah back in the day I managed to get a rooted one on eBay for £230 with nothing but about every movie streaming service available on it. After factory resetting it it's lasted me 10 years, longer than the PC I had at the time lol
People who played Shadowgun Deadzone competitively remember the good ol days of the nexus 7 , shield portable, shield tablet. These devices were the pioneers of the gaming tablets we have today.
I'd like to see a new portable also. Though I wonder if nVidia has a non-competition agreement with Nintendo. That and there hasn't been a new Tegra since the X1 released in 2015.
I still have a brand new one in the box. I’ve had it for 7 or 8 years now. I never opened it because I was afraid eventually the screen would stop working like the one I used to use before it stopped working. 🤷🏻♂️
Wanted this thing so bad but given it was freshman year of high school I wasn't throwing my little minimum wage checks on a Shield. I'd kill for a new one, but the Deck takes it's place.
The thing is perfect if you want to play old 32-bit Android games flawlessly and don't forget _crisp_ THD optimized and exclusive ( if you know where to find ).
I just pulled mine out of a box in my shop. I have very fond memories of this device and I have tried to pick it back up over the years but I have been met with so many software problems that it just hasn't been possible. Now that the Steam Deck is around, devices such as this, in my eyes at least, are basically pointless unless you specifically want to use it for Android games. Even then, it only got up to Android 5, which is almost a decade old at this point. Pair all that with the deteriorating batteries, I think they are sadly becoming obsolete.
They probably won't. They make the chip that powers the Switch, and they basically admitted they discontinued the portable Shield devices to not compete with the Switch.
Yeah, still great but getting on now. I think the new Razer Edge is a natural successor. Mine’s starting to die I think. Battery definitely is. I got so much use out of it on long commutes. I recall having Ferrari 355 for Dreamcast going on it but the tracks were reversed AND mirrored! Half Life 2, GTA San Andreas, KOTOR, Asphalt 7&8, Ridge Racer Slipstream(so awesome),Horizon Chase, NOVA 3, ShadowGun, Modern Combat 4&5, Jet Set Radio. The list goes on and on…
This is/was a quality device. I still have mine. I traded in my psvita and games to cover the £145 it cost me at the time many years ago (cex) I think it's probably time to let it go though and get a more up to date device or stick to using my phone and a kishi.
If Nvidia would make another one that looked similar to this I would buy it right now because I'm in the market for a new handheld I bet you if you wrote it and put a newer version of Android on it it would do a lot better
Yeah, literally just the same device with a newer chip and updated Android would be 100% perfect for me too, and with cloud gaming as good as it is now it's even damn good still as it is.
The Nintendo Switch is basically the successor to both the Shield Portable and the Shield Tablet. It has been speculated Nvidia cannot make a handheld or console which will compete with Nintendo since they supply them with the Tegra X1 chipset for the Switch. I honestly think the Shield Portable and Tablets were just created to showcase their new portable console level chips so that someone like Nintendo would buy them.
@vanillaicespice I setup steam on a pc and from there I setup the emulator and controller with a xbox controller and put the locations of the roms and from there I change the hotkey to one of the number buttons on the top left to exit game and reset game from there I setup a frontend to load the games ,why a frontend because the steam app is gonna detect it has a xbox controller no matter what controller I use and frontend support xbox controlls I can play any games like and for the hotkeys to work I use steam keymapping tricks to get to work
I had one of these and loved it. It’s just so unfortunate it didn’t have enough support. I bought Half Life 2 and Portal on it but it wasent the greatest. The design for the console was top notch though.
Yeah this console is bad, but i Stil want it. But i just love Nvidia. And i still love handheld consoles. Normal consoles are bad for me. -Me from hungary 🇭🇺 + ²⁰²³
i wouldn't trade mine for anything lol play all my nes-ps1 games on this and always have. nothing is better in my opinion than this to play these on. even playing at work people still today say it looks amazing on it and ask where they can get one
would you trade it for a steam deck because it can play ps1 and nes as well as ps2,xbox 360,ps3,wii,gamecube,switch and wii u as well as modern triple A pc games
You kept saying "it is no longer the case" follow by your reason being "there are better devices"... are you dumb? Read our own title, dude. Is the NSP obsolete? The answer is NO. Also, just because you cannot find a specific version of an emulator doesn't mean the device doesn't work with that emulator anymore. It just means you are lazy. I have all working version of all emulators because I took the time to test every single one of them and see which one was the best. So no, it is not obsolete.
It hasn't had an official update since 2016 and can't go past Android 5.1 without being soft modded and yet it's not Obsolete?? I love my NSP too but c'mon dude.
@@GameHeadNes I have to side with Tony Leon here. Even though it's not getting firmware updates anytime soon and hasn't since 2016, there are custom ROMs upto Android 7 out there. Not to mention even on the stock 5.1 release, Google Play Services still gets updates and all games and apps that support firmware version 5+, will work, which is most apps on the Play Store. It also massively depends on your use cases, if you want a device under £150 for old school emulation and casual Android gaming, this is still a great device, but if you want this to emulate GameCube and upwards or to run Genshin Impact, then this won't, but then there's a lot of newer devices on the market that won't either. I still regularly use mine for old school emulation and much prefer it over the GPD XD and similar devices due to the superior build quality and ergonomics.

Had a great run with this portable back then. Pity they didn't make more of these. At least now, there's plenty android devices similar to this.
there is also the ROG Ally and Steam Deck than can play much more games and can even emulate Android and consoles like PS2 and PS3
