I had a Shield tablet. Brought it on a 2 week cruise and played through a bunch of GBA games and read a few books as an added bonus. It was a pretty solid experience!
I know this is a 10 month old video, but to respond your disappointment that Nvidia haven't released a new Shield model. Do not quote me on this, but if I remember correctly, it's because of Nintendo. Nvidia agreed to not release any more Shield products (at least no upgraded ones), because it would compete with the Switch, which technically is also a Nvidia product, but not in name. It's crazy that the Shield was released in 2015, and is still the most powerful Android TV box out there.
I love the fact that can you CHARGe the device, WHILE using HDMI connection, WHILE wearing Gaming Headphones, So you can have it going all day long with no problems. Nowadays you have to buy all kinds of adapters to be able to do that. I would buy this Tablet over the Tab S6 Lite anyday.
You just about have to root this tablet now and install Lineage OS to make the most of it. The Tegra Note 7 is my all time favorite Android tablet. The Shield tablet gamepad mapper for touch only games is really good. Great video as always!!!

Not really possible. The ROM development is dead. Look at XDA Developers. There is an experimental build which I tried, but all the apps constantly crash.
They didn't give up on tablets, they signed a non-compete agreement with Nintendo in order to lock in the Switch deal and supply chips for the system. They stopped selling the Shield Tablet in mid 2017, almost exactly the same time the Nintendo Switch launched.
I still use this shield k1 tablet almost every day. Its plays everything till psp easily. Even GOW psp at decent 2x. Games like doom bfg, portal, half life2 etc were releases specially optimized for this tablet. Great for streaming + android games too. Except for the poor battery this tab is still great for me.
This is why I bought the Xiaomi Mipad instead when they both launched. The same Tegra K1 CPU but I got a much better rear camera, a bigger screen with a retina panel and larger resolution, 64 GB internal storage and for a cheaper price than the Nvidia tablet.
@@JoeByrds Thanks. It 'was' nice but while using the rear camera to record video was great, the autofocus was fussy sometimes when taking still pictures. The case was very slippery and hard on the hands to use. Because Xiaomi used a recovery partition, the system partition wasn't big enough for anything above KitKat 4.4. In the end, you had to merge both partitions and use a custom ROM if you wanted anything later. Not sure if it was any different for the shield tablet.
mine runs very slow and hangs sometimes even after a factory reset and battery replacement. also doesn’t look like there’s many people able to run custom roms or LineageOS on this device. please let me know if I’m wrong on that. but I have seen so many people complaining about similar performance issues from the start, that it seems this tablet never got the attention that it deserved.
I have one of these from like 2015. My issue was the storage quality used in these. It would perpetually slow down and I had to reset it many times. When it worked though it was awesome
I have had one for years, great tablet but it is showing its age now due to lack of new android builds. If anyone buys one now you will need to root it and install a custom rom, I had to do this as the stock rom wouldn't connect to my new router.

@@rob4222 depends on what model you talk about ... since they quickly redesigned it ... but the main core is Tegra GPU and this tablet ... another thing , that will kill performance on Switch in the Tablet mode ... since only then this device down-clocks itself , will be the inclusion of Denuvo from October or December on ALL Switch GAMES to stop PC emulation ...
I think a modern equivalent is the Lenovo Legion Y700 for about $400. I had the Nvidia K1 tablet, and it was cool. But, man, it would suck down the battery!
I have done that for Doom, HL, Portal. It works. Doom bfg i had purchased earlier but it is no longer on play store but the side loaded one checks for license and works perfectly fine for me.

Comparing this with todays standards is meaningless. As a tablet back in the days it was good, but as a gaming tablet it was awesome and had the gpu power beyond all others. What makes this and the portable very special, is that they are without a doubt, the parents of the Switch.
this tablet is better if you rooted you can add memory from you SD Card to the rams and emulate more gb of ram that make the tablet faster and better and all because the Tegra K1 that chip is crazy good and the guide for that is from Nvidia them selfs.
I just recently found this video. I know it's been up a while. I have the Shield K1 version, the one without the stylus. It's a great device on paper, but it's been such a disappointment. It started off okay enough. The display panel is nice, but it is glitchy at lower brightness where it flickers. It's definitely the panel or the OS, not any settings because I tried them all. And then all the OS updates just make the tablet worse. One of the OTA updates broke the wifi. I had to manually flash an older OS image. Luckily, I was comfortable enough doing that. Then later updates turned the unit into a slow and unresponsive mess. I went through cycles of not using it for months, forgetting why I wasn't using it, then seeing the terrible performance in Android 7. The reason I found this video is because that cycle played out again. The thing was chugging badly. This time, I decided to flash the factory image, Android 5, and root it. The performance is actually good again. It also seems more stable and my battery life might actually be decent now. It's the fact that the hardware is nice, inside and out, and that it is a decent emulation machine that I finally decided to go back to Android 5 and try again. That has its own issues, but so far it's a lot better and I know how to choose APKs for an older OS.
I have the tablet, the pen version, I would like to downgrade it comes with Android 7, even when restoring it goes back to Android 7, I would like to downgrade and root it to make it faster and remove Nvidia apps that I don't use
I can’t run Netflix on the NVidia Shield K1 I just bought. The app remains stuck on the black screen with Netflix written in red. Did you do something special to get it running properly as in the video?
It's nice, but the ROM development is dead. Even the latest LineageOs causes Apps to crash. This thing is basically unusable, as long as nobody develops a new custom ROM.

The closest follow-up to this is the Nintendo Switch as Nvidia put their efforts into the Shield TV and the Nintendo Switch instead of another Android tablet. I would love to see a follow-up as well for the Shield tablets.

This video is from 2022. I have the same tablet in 2023 and I can't watch Netflix on it. Both the application and the site just freeze and that I get a mistake message saying the Android version is too old. Any help, please?
Being a for-gamers tablet, and for it’s initial price it should shipped nothing less than 4gb ram. 2gb was very average in 2015. This is like seeing a big brand gaming rig today with only 8gb ram.
You should look into the 10 inch Octa Core Tablet. it's Cheap, It has 4GB ram. that's the perfect tablet everyone should get it and they can also afford it.

Best console ever. Gerforce now was free for 2-4 years. One of highlights of my childhood.

People say AOSP 5.8 and Lineage 14.1 are stable. I have 15.1 and 5.8 and satisfied so far.

Alternatively you could put it in Recovery Mode then select ‘wipe cache partition’. That would give you a boost without a full reset.
I installed AOSP 5.8 and it's blazingly fast now.
I use this just to play old versions of games RUclips works good with it still but chrome is just a buggy mess
