The Nintendo Switches older brother, we didn't know at the time it was a proof of concept for Nintendo. Then they asked Nvidia if they could make a tablet, Nvidia made the shield tablet. Nintendo asked if they could make it a home console, Nvidia made the tv box shield. Nvidia asked if they could run Nintendo game, they ported Super Mario Sunshine (only available in China). Then they shook hands and made the switch.
Wtf are you talking about? Nvidia devices failed so Nintendo got a boatload of an old chip for cheap
I think NVIDIA is working with the Nintendo Switch 2 ;)
Lmao what did i just read
Couple of you missed the point
@@xXlURMOMlXxstill used nvidia’s chip.
Oh man, completely forgot about these things, at the time i was like 11 and this looked like it came out of a sci-fi movie
Hey, I remember sending you that! 😀 Glad you're still using it.
That's a blast from the past. Still use my 1st gen Nvidia shield
Fun fact, Half-Life 2 has since gotten an unofficial android port that works great on non shield devices!
Got any details. I've seen a Reddit post but it's 3 years old
I was talking to a friend about the Nvidia Shield a couple months ago.. we used to sell them when I worked at Microcenter
This formfactor is so much better than on the Switches and Steam Decks of this world. The screen is nicely elevated making the whole experience more ergonomic and putting less strain on your neck. Hands are also closer together allowing for a more traditional controller feel.
Also a much smaller screen
Yeah proper controller form and much lighter weight makes it so nice to hold. I love my steam deck but everytime I play it for longer than 1 hour I always wish it was lighter.
@@alexdavis9324 Easily solved with today's bezelless screens.
This form factor with a screen that's super thin like just the display panel, 1080p OLED 8 inches = perfect
@@alexdavis9324 Easily solved with a modern bezеllеss screen.
Forgot all about these! I think the main take away here is the form factor. It's instantly ergonomic, and it looks like a full size controller chassis could house a fair bit of modern components to make a fairly capable modern handheld. nvda had a lot going for it with the shield platform in general. the multimedia capabilities are still impressive today.
bro i just put mine back on the charger after all these years
I just put mine on the charger.
I owned one when it first came out. I played a lot of snes, ps1, Dead Trigger and Half Life 2. My brother has the shield now.
Something like this with the latest AMD chip would be awesome, just plug in AR glasses for a bigger screen.
I am starting to feel old... Windows 7 was our OS, I was using OnLive to play PC games with my buddy because our system was a Pentium with Intel HD graphics and 6GB DDR3 😂 Xbox Live party chat was popping like Discord, Playstation Home was the current Metaverse. Ouch 😢
2013 is also when I built my first system. FX-6300 and an XFX R9 270X 4GB
If it's any consolation, you just made me feel a lot older 😂
Thanks for bursting this out😊
No way lol! I found mine yesterday and I was looking exactly for that kind of video :D
Alexa was spying on you.🤨🧐 So they had predicted your next action. 😮
I always wanted one of these back in the day...
I still have mine and surprisingly still works and turns on. I used it a lot for steam link.
I just sold mine a few years back, as it just got sooooo slow to try and use. The speakers at the time were absolutely insane, I haven't had a lot of new tech over the years but I loved this thing. I have small hands, and it was the perfect size, it was a lil on the heavy side, but it fealt well built because of it. I wish they would have made a sequel, as the form factor was way ahead of its time.
Wow. I used to love my shield portable! I upgraded to the k1 tablet with stylus but kept the portable until it died and was buried😭 Awesome device. Definitely a piece of my childhood. Playing a bards take on the bigs screen via mini HDMI, my first jump into roms and emulation. If nvidia made a handheld today, I'd def snatch it up!
i had the tablet version of this handheld, it was awesome
you mean the switch?
I had 4 Shield tablets 😂
I still have the handheld, it was a powerhouse when it was released. There was nothing like it very powerful handheld just as the video said.
I had one of these, and completely wore it out. Battery couldnt hold a charge, rubber on the thumb sticks worn off, you name it. It was a great device that seen a lot of use by me :)
These were awesome, I have the Shield Tablet and that was a powerhouse for years.
Man this was amazing back then. It was ahead of its time.
never got to own one but was obsessive with it and ever since then it’s been history with mobile gaming
I remember wanting one of these because you could stream to twitch from it
Look much better than handheld this day ! Easy to carry and ergonomic. Full size controller too
I bought this brand new and loved playing half life 2
I was able to stream my PS4 on remote play and I would always play Destiny 2. It was an amazing piece of technology for its time and I have yet to find anything with the same quality. The ergonomic feel of the controller is amazing. Also the screen is touchscreen with android.
I missed this device. Had one and had alot of fun. With the rise of handhelds this would be cool to have it come back in some way
Ooh that Nvidia Shield Portable looks so cool, it's like a PC version of Sony's PlayStation Portal and I like how it looks like a controller with a 3DS screen what's something new and amazing for a PC controller i'm impressed WOW thank you Nvidia and Eta! I want to believe Nvidia is working with the Upcoming Nintendo's follower the New Nintendo Switch Console. 🖤💚
I still have my shield portable, though the battery has gone bad. I loved it back then, still do, the form factor was amazing. Had a shield tablet as well and i used it till the battery wouldn't hold a charge anymore.
This thing was awesome at the time (still have mine in a box somewhere).
The design is what held it back in my opinion. While having a full size controller is awesome to play with, the shape and size were just too cumbersome. Also the handheld emulation niche was WAY smaller back then so this got panned quickly.. Anyone remember the Dingoo A320? GP2x Caanoo? The Wiz? Those were what was around in the late 2000's / early 2010's.
Dingoo A320 bring back memories. paired with opendingux, i've got hours and hours of gameplay back in the day (2010, if my memory not fails me)
I remember the GP2X way before this thing.
OpenPandora was queen at that time and remained for many days.
@@mystechry I have that one too! It was awesome and was literally a linux laptop with buttons.
@@LessonsOnTheWeb It was my main device back in university. I took notes with it during the lectures
This one of my favorite devices back in high school
This was awesome back in the day!!!!
I have mine still. For me, this was one of the best handheld gadgets i ever owned. The small form tegra tablets and this were some of the BEST times in android gaming that i ever took part in.
Very cool device. I really wanted it at certain point in my childhood
i just wish Nvidia should have continued developping the Tegra chip line! imagine Nvidia tegra X with the latest 3nm node from TSMC its a dream that need to come true!.
I would assume the reason there hasn't been a new one..is that Nvidia probably has non-competition contractual agreements with Nintendo over the Switch. Which sucks because AMD is eating Nvidia's lunch right now in mobile PC gaming.
great video !
THIS. I wish more of these Chinese portable consoles explored this form factor! This with a snap dragon or if possible a x86 chip would be so amazing
Hey ETA Prime, any thoughts on doing a video of you modding this device to make it more current? I just found my Shield Portable, and I would love to see if there is anything you can do to it, to make it more powerful.
Mine still functions. I can still play Dreamcast games on some old nightly builds of Reicast.
The nvidia shield is what got me into emulation back in the day🐐🔥🔥🔥
Yeah Baby! This was my main emulation device for several years. I was able to play N64 in HD for YEARS before anyone else could! The ergonomics and build quality of this thing were seriously impressive for the time! FYI: You should load up older versions of apps to be able to run them today.
I would love a new handheld that looks like this. It would be perfect and still seems like a cool device all these years later.
I wanted this device so bad back in the day. It still looks pretty impressive given how old it is
Good times, finished some tell tale games on it along with streaming fallout 4 via Nvidia gamestream during college
I own this! Was so cool back in the day! 🍻🔥
I remember when that first came out. Wanted one so bad but couldn’t afford it at the time. We’ve come a long way
the nintendo switch grand father, i had one... it was amasing..
I have two of these that I am using in 2024. The one I will talk about, I purposely have downgraded to 4.3. (official). The reason why is to actually future proof the device further, as they will eventually lose Google support, so the trick is to run older apps that are less dependent on Google play services. 4.3 can also move apps to SD, (something that was lost in 4.4) This helps a lot as I use this device for playing my collection of old android games specifically. Even though I own them a lot have to be side loaded, but there where some absolute bangers :) With some XDA wizardry, patience and geek awesome, I will argue that these are still pretty awesome if you know your expectations. 5.1 on these as ETA says is still kind of cool as well and defiantly has the advantage of being able to stream games plus GeForce Now still works out of the box. ETA , if you read this, I actually have kept my Shield Tablet, Tegra Note 7 and Portables all going through 2024. I have some set up for emulation , but I'm also just trying to preserve them as gaming time capsules.
A modern version of this with a bezelless display would be absolutely amazing
I would like to see a revisit of the claw since all the updates.
Man I used the heck out of mine!
Bloody Roar!
I have a K1 shield tablet, screen is bust and impossible to find a replacement for, but the mini-hdmi makes it useful.
It used to just be the Shield, before the TV took over the regular Shield name, the rename to Portable was honestly a disservice to the device.
I used mine throughout my high school years, to the point that all of the rubbers were worn either smooth or down to the plastic underneath, and the back button no longer worked towards the end. It was an incredible device of the time, and if it were modernized even just a little, I'd still happily rock it in my bag alongside my Deck and phone. If I thought otherwise, I wouldn't have worn the rubbers off of it with use 😂
I hope the answer is yes as I still have one that I don't use. I suspect the answer was 'No' though.
YOOOO I REMEMBER THIS AWESOME DEVICE! never owned one myself but, I did get a Nvidia Shield Tablet with 8" screen. it was nice till it the touchscreen went wonky. I used it for the ONLIVE service. to me that was the BEST game streaming service out there. so seamless to jump into games and play OR watching someone else play. goddamn im hit with the memories hahaha
I still have mine, it works great
Wow seriously lots of people don't know about this it was one of the best hand-held back then
Loved this handheld.
I loved my Shield Portable and even though it's outdated, I'm keeping it for the nostalgia and as a collectable more than anything else. With that being said, I'm going to see if it still charges up and see what the state of LineageOS is for it. If I can get Steam Link working on it, then it will get a well-deserved second life and give my Pixel's battery a break.
Hey Prime, will you be reviewing the 8bitdo ultimate 3-mode controller? Really want to know if it uses x-input in it's android mode. Last year's Bluetooth model looks great but limited to d-input in BT mode, which sucked. Cheers.
I’ve literally been researching how to do this is set up in 2024. I just couldn’t remember its name.
The number one feature of that is it's very pocketable.
I have one of these, that I bought from a NVIDIA employee at PAX back in 2013. I still have the Nvidia shopping bag it game in. I'm willing to sell! 😆
It would be cool to see kits for devices like this that allow you to swap the motherboard out for newer and more powerful components...someone is working on a kit that allows the PSP internals to be swapped out for a Raspberry Pi Compute Module and custom PCBs to keep the buttons and nub functional.
I was not expecting to see a controller with an HDMI port today, or any day for that matter.
I was following this really closely when it came out. I'm surprised nvidia still doesn't sell more Tegra devices for consumers. Now they mostly just sell devkits.
By far the best form factor for a handheld doesent allow the screen to get scratched in transit without a case
nvidia really needs to make another one of these , with tech from rtx 4000/5000 inside 🤤
I miss the shield line of products. They were so far ahead of their time.
this was my 1st emulation handheld. The one that started my addiction. Mine still powers on and functions.
the best thing of the controller is the layout like the Playstation. After all, our hands don't have the left thumb on a different position as on the right hand. Stilk have the console, way too small amount of memory and graphics card is still awsome. Doing Geoforce and Steam, online TV and all streaming services like Netflix, it was indeed the multimedia box at the time
I had the Shield tablet with controller, a really well bit of hardware, over time the updates bogged it right down
still have one. i enjoy it still.
As someone who bought it when it came out, I've been having a very hard time fixing it's battery and charging problems. It's not worth buying even as a collectible at this point.
I liked the Nvidia K1 tablet
i love que form factor, it doesn't makes the joypad unconfortable like others handhelds. but the screen is too smal.
I had this. I sold it for the tablet which started out great and then just turned to shit. First they had the buldging battery issue and the cracking plastic that they never fixed. Then they had the update that would freeze the tablet and they didn't fix it for months. My battery on the replacement turned to shit and the tablet would just lock up. Newer devices are so much better with the Snapdragon 8+ gen 1 and up. Even when that Shield Portable was out I couldn't play Sega Genesis games with filters without lag.
I still got its tablet brother Tegra Note 7. Still decent for old android games like Twewy mobile and other android ports.
now it's too old but way back it was awensome device .
think i still have mine somewhere, if they would make a modern version id probably get it.
I had the K1 tablet. It was ok. It pissed me off that they discontinued it and had no direct swap battery replacement.
I have two different nvidia tablets one is shield one is a Tegra , both have custom drivers for clocks and display drivers making them usable for wireless screens or remote but unsafe to use on internet
It also had a tiny fan for the active cooling! I think these days it would be best for GeForce Now. I used to own one awhile back. It's a charmer. I remember my main pet peeve was when an app would rotate to portrait 😡
Would love to see you install a new ROM.
Just think about it, if Nvidia still continue to make PC handheld and able to use DLSS in it.
I think handheld market it's gonna be more interesting.
I wish my screen could work on mine. I do miss it working.
What animated wallpaper is that on the odin mimi?2:47
It just seems like this would be a security nightmare being on Android 5.1, wouldn't want to login to anything important.
This was only released to showcase their ARM chips. Their Tegra chips were way too beefy for phones, they wanted to demo what they could be used for. Nintendo bit and now we have the switch. I wanted one pretty badly but I remember they were kinda pricy. Also was not a fan of gaming on Android at the time. They did have a full-blown Linux computer running on Tegra chips with PCI slots for upping the graphics that they had on display at trade shows but no one was interested. I think those came before this? I'm not sure, it was a long time ago.
I was waiting on a shield 2 and it never arrived
I miss these i played the crap out of mortal kombat X when it first came out on this thing. And real racing 3, thing was fast as hell when it came out absolutely smashed my S2
It would be nice if Nvidia released an Orin Android (or Windows) 7 inch Tablet with attachable controllers that could also fit inside a 15 inch laptop/dock shell as a mouse pad, with a battery and a vapour chamber inside to boost it’s performance and lifespan:-/
We already have Windows on Arm for Qualcomm, so why not Orin with either 100 or 200 TOPS depending on the 1,024 Or 2048 GPU configuration?
Android and Samsung’s Dex would be a Super Nice option
Lol thanks. Time to put mine on ebay!
I actually can literally grab mine right now. Honestly surprised you're coving this.
This bad boy ran MGS3 and MG Rising Revengeance
I still have mine and also with stock firmware, don't wanna throw it away but as you said, it is old and basically nothing runs on it anymore. Maybe I'll start using it with Steam link.
Unfortunately I have one but the battery died I should change it is this safe to change it or I will lose the device ?
Can you make a video about the first phone to come with 120 refresh rate
I hope someone patches all of those Tegra games so we can play on modern Android. 🥺
