David Coverdale on searing lead vocals, Glenn Hughes on backing vocals & thumping bass, Ritchie Blackmore on god given guitar, the mighty Jon Lord on keyboards & Ian Paice on drums.
This is Deep Purple Mark III on the Burn tour in 1974 which I saw. They were fantastic!!!!!

Thank you for playing this song. And I think you loved it ?
It's been a long time. But I think this is from the Burn album ?
I had several albums, but time, and moving desimate the record collection.
And age reduce the memories, too. :(

Mark III Deep Purple is a testament to how Jon Lord, Paice, and Blackmore were able to change Deep Purple's Sound to fit Coverdale' s Bluesy Voice. I have to mention Glenn Hughes was a excellent vocalist and Bass Player. Not to many Bands that were a huge as Deep Purple was with the Mark II lineup couldn't change and still be a huge success by changing singers, especially as big a Star Ian Gillian was. Deep Purple in 73 was the biggest selling band in America and The United States wasn't really really their Market. But the rest of the World got it. Purple ruled Asia, Eastern Europe. They were bigger than the Beatles in Japan.

Lead Singer is David Coverdale, but the very high powerful voice close to the end was Glen Hughes singing in harmony with David. If you react to "Burn", a song from the same '74 California Jam (this video) you'll see Glen playing the Bass with platform shoes and belting out with his super powerful voice. There are some quotes on the web where they say "Glen can play bass, but he's not allowed to sing" meaning he "shows up" a lot of the lead singers and he's supposed to be the backup.

There were two singers in this Mach III version of Deep Purple. The lead singer--David Coverdale--was the baritone while the bassist--Glenn Hughes--sang tenor. Glenn is the one you hear doing the really high falsetto. The two of them together made a very impressive vocal combo. David Coverdale would later go on to form the band Whitesnake.
Regarding Deep Purple in general, it is the Mach II lineup with Ian Gillan on lead vocals that is the most famous. Smoke On The Water, Hush, Child In Time, Woman From Tokyo and Knocking At Your Backdoor are some of their better known tracks.

Smoke on the Water, possibly the most famous guitarist of all time. It's one of the first riffs a beginning guitar player learns. But then many of their riffs have been used in music since. So.... Popular as far as I'm concerned they've been on my playlist since the very beginning.
The thing is it wasn't just a handful of good bands, it was hundreds. If you consider all genres and mixes thereof.

Am surprised you had not been introduced to DP yet. In my opinion they are up there and have been around as long as Cream, Zeppelin, the Who, etc......But they have kinda been like the black sheep of this family. Other songs I would recommend by them are.... Lazy, Space Truckin, Highway Star, Child in Time, Woman From Tokyo, No, No, No,...... all the studio versions. They had a different singer then who is also amazing. A guy named Ian Gillan who has done some amazing things with his voice that no one else does quite like him. I promise you won't be disappointed. Enjoy. Kurt from Maine

Beginning with Rod Evens, Ian Gillian and then David Coverdale; three of the best vocalists of all time - This band didn't just invent metal; they innovated rock with orchestra and birthed the anthem.
Rod Evens cover of Ike & Tina's 'River deep, Mountain high' is still my favourite version of the song. If you can get a hold of the album "Book of Taleisyn", their earliest album; give it a listen. Glad you got so into it, I was the same at 5yo 👍

Can’t believe this is your first experience with Purple ! This is MK3 Deep Purple, (check out MK2 with Ian Gillan - Child in Time is a Good place to start).
Note in this clip from California Jam in ‘74 that Glenn Hughes on bass shared a lot of vocal duties on songs from this line up - most notably ‘Burn’ - check out this as it was also recorded at Cal Jam. That is Glenn doing the high vocal harmony at the end, not Coverdale !
I mentioned once before when you reviewed Jimmy Barnes and Lachy Doley that there is a connection as both have played with Glenn Hughes !

  • @clarkditter5975

Deep Purple were English contemporaries of Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. Although the singer, David Coverdale has a great bluesy voice, you really need to hear the previous lineup (referred to as Deep Purple mark II) with Ian Gillan. They were extraordinarily talented musicians (Listen to "Smoke on the Water", "Black Night" & "Lazy" and when you're ready "Fireball", "Bloodsucker" and "Child In Time".
Apart from some incredibly good songs, Deep Purple's influence on heavy rock music was enormous: Ritchie Blackmore (guitarist) left to form Rainbow, and as well as being very successful, this introduced Ronnie James Dio to the world; David Coverdale (singer) subsequently had enormous success with his band Whitesnake; Dio had some success with his own band, but also did a great album (Heaven & Hell) with Black Sabbath.

Their most Iconic song is "Smoke On The Water" I dare you not to Rock Out whenever you hear it. They never expected it to be a hit, Deep Purple thought their Manager was crazy when He said it was going to be a hit. And all because someone stupid played with a Flake Gun and accidentally burnt 🔥 down a Casino. In Montreux, Switzerland where Deep Purple, The Rolling Stones and Frank Zappa had gone to record. It's a story telling song and they still can't believe it when people ask them what it's about. All you need to do is pay attention to the lyrics. In 96 and 06 Deep Purple played it in Montreux of course it's loved there.

This was the new lineups first performance together. David Coverdale was completely new to the band, having replaced the mighty Ian Gillan. He did ok, didn't he? :) The mark 2 and mark 3 lineups are considered peak Deep Purple. Most fans prefer mark 2, with Ian Gillan (vocals) and Roger Glover (bass), ove mark 3, with David Coverdale (vocals) and Glenn Hughes (bass/vocals) but both lineups were pretty incredible! Mark 2 was more successful and produced most of their major hits but mark 3 was hugely successful too and produced some amazing tracks. In case you're wondering, Ritchie Blackmore (guitar), Jon Lord (organ/keyboards) and Ian Paice (drums/percussion) were in both lineups. When Deep Purple broke up, members from these two lineups formed the basis for two more hugely successful bands, Rainbow and Whitesnake. In fact, there's a whole 'family tree' of bands, branching off from Deep Purple! :)

For this particular lineup of the band check out Stormbringer (Album version) or Burn (from this same concert). Glenn Hughes is the bass player and has the higher register of vocal in the band and it blends well with the main vocalist David Coverdale. Ian Gillan who is the part of their most famous lineup has monster performances as well. Check out Strange Kind of Woman (Made in Japan 1972)

I heard you mentioned your Top 5 male vocalists of all time. You put in names like Jimmy Barnes, John Farnham and Swanee. Nothing wrong with these vocalists they are awesome but you oughta go out a lot more........This guy doing Mistreated is David Coverdale....he left Deep Purple and formed his own band called Whitesnake (check out "Still of the Night" or the poppy rock global hit "Here I Go Again". David also did a fantastic song which incorporates elements of classical music in the guitar and keyboard solo on Deep Purple's "Burn" (a song about a witch). Another great rock vocalist which would sneak into your Top 5 is Ronnie James Dio (who had his own rock band called Dio)......he did a version of "Mistreated" as well with Ritchie Blackmore's (the guitarist in this video) band called Rainbow.....mind blowing. Dio was also briefly with the band Black Sabbath replacing Ozzy Osbourne. The original singer of Deep Purple (and still is today) is Ian Gillan.....check out "Highway Star" (also has elements of classical music in the solos) or you probably have heard of the famous guitar riff of "Smoke on the Water". I ain't giving you money LOL check 'em out out of love of music and a sense of curiosity.

This is - in my opinion - closer to the the roots of heavy metal than most things you hear. It's more akin to really heavy blues than rock.

As a side note, I do believe the high falsetto screams are Hughes (the bass player), and not Coverdale (the singer). I think they sing that part together, but I'm not 100%.
Hughes was also an incredible singer. In fact, when their first singer Ian Gillian left the band, they were considering just having Hughes sing. But then they stumbled across David Coverdale on an open mic night in Britain.
Coverdale was the only one in the band who had not been a professional musician prior to playing in Deep Purple. In fact, this concert was the first time he visited the US.
The rest of this concert is very much worth watching, as well. Black Sabbath opened for Deep Purple, who opened for Emmerson, Lake and Palmer. All three bands had legendary gigs. This was California Jam '74; there's plenty (if not all) of it available here on YT.

Deep Purpole had a band named 'Elf' who opened fir them on several world tours, the singer of Elf was Ronnie James Dio. Ritchie Blackmore, Deep Purples guitarist, left DP and formed the band Rainbow with Dio at vocals. Check our this song, which Ritchie brought with him, performed by Rainbow, check out the video 'Rainbow: 'Mistreated' Live in Munich 1977'. YOU WILL BE BLOWN AWAY!
