Yamaha 9.9 Lower unit removal

When putting it back together as soon as I put lower unit back on it puts the motor into forward. When everything is back it won't let me shift gears

Make sure the lower unit and the shift handle are in neutral. As you slide the lower unit up you will need to thread the shift rod coupler together as you push it up the last 3/4 of an inch.

hi, my shift rod coupler is seized, do i need to take the rod off to un seize or is there a trick to doing it in place? thanks jf
