Based on your easy to follow and straight forward video, I entirely rebuilt the water pump on my 9.9 Honda outboard. I was proud of myself and grateful to you. Thanks!
The water pump went out on my Honda 9.9. I watched D-Ray's video once and went to work, one hour later I was back on the water. Thanks D-Ray.
Excellent demonstration of doing this impeller replacement. Very clear instructions and walk through. Thank you for making this job that much simpler.
D-Ray: your laid back demeanor and self-deprecating humor make for a great video. Thank you for doing this. It helps immensely and it's the best how-to out there.
This is a great video. I watched others, but here the close up of the shifter linkage made everything clear to me. Also thanks for info on the importance of setting the blades for clockwise rotation.
Well done video D-Ray! I am a small outboard repairman in Wilmington, North Carolina, been loving it since 1988!!! Thanks for a very nice video!!!!
Thank-you for the easy to follow instructions. I was able to watch the video once and go out and replace the entire water pump assembly in one hour. No problem. Parts were $37. Can't thank you enough!!
That's awesome. What all parts did you replace other than the impeller? May I ask what size wrenches and sockets did you use for each part in the video? Thank you ahead of time.
Fantastic demo - You made this fix easy to do with no surprises. Thanks.
To Ben Josey: I have a 2001 honda 9.9 HP. I had to put the shifter in reverse, which drops the shaft down, to get better access to the link nut to screw it off the shaft. Also, I had five screws attaching my lower head two on each side and one long on at the rear. Without this great video I would have never attempted this fix.
Thanks for making the video, big help. Seeing how you blow out the cylinder head weather channel would have been nice, didn't think about clearing that
Thanks for sharing sir, In Turkey they charge a fortune for this job and do the wrong job... But you are great after watching you I got the part and replaced it myself.
Mate I know this is an old video, but from UK England thank you so much for making a video in a calm manner and taking some of my anxiety away. Thanks.
Great step by step. I was racking my mind on what the issue was. I get to enjoy my boat now. Thanks for the video!
Excellent video; good camera angles, very good explanations. Thanks
Muy bien detallado, no es complicado, pero en la mayoría de los tutoriales no explican ni muestran los detalles. Gracias y abrazote desde la patagonia.
Absolutely the best commentary and instructional words ever...I have had mine done twice in 8 yrs and finding out its a basic yearly deal. Book says oil changes very 10 or 15 hours?. Mines a 2011 15 hp and run it monthly even thou not in the water like I should be...thanx so much awesome shop and all later
Such a good video. Great work man!
One of the better instructional videos I've seen. Thanks and good job.
D-Ray this was a great video, well done and you made it easy to understand. I just changed out my impeller on a 10hp Mercury after watching and it is exactly how you said. My only problem was the shifting linkage it didn't seam to work as I resembled it but one turn of the prop did the trick. Thanks going to see what else you have and learn some more.
Excellent vid. Really clear explanation and close up shots. Thanks!
Great explanation, thank you - feel confident doing this to my BF15A now!
I like this guy's happy accent. Nice video.
Never owned a boat, don't know why I'm watching this, but I learned something, Sooo good job!
Thanks for watchin', it's been 20 years since I've worked on one of those, but they were a pain back then! lol The linkage disconnects on the top of the shifter shaft, and if I remember correct, I would clamp a pair of vise grips to the barrel nut, and spin the lower unit to thead it off, just count the rounds, so to get it back correctly. hope you need nothing more than an impeller, the plastic housings are prone to failure and no longer available :(
Thanks. My uncle had his impeller replaced on his 9.9 2 years ago, but he never took it out. I've fixed his boat, put the motor on it tonight, and tested it. Motor started fine, but no water out of the weep hole. Guess I'll check that tomorrow. Video was great!
Excellent video very straightforward . D- Ray knows his stuff.
Just changed my first impeller and it was easy with you sitting on my kitchen table (laptop) showing me. Great video! Thanks for the help. Kevin
D-Ray - great video! Thanks for taking the time to put it together.
I thank you so much for this. At 72 I don't have money but I have time. I feel I can approach the job because of your great video. Thanks!

Thanks man, this one was easy, probably the easiest water pump I've ever done.
Thanks for that man I just emailed it to a pal of mine sounds like he has exactly the same problem on his 9.5 Johnson. Very helpful thank you.

thank you
I just bought a 1991 Honda 15hp outboard in beautiful condition with very low hours. I plan on "going thru it" in the next few weeks, and your video was absolutely fantastic in regards to the water pump. Not sure if my lower unit will come apart exactly like yours, but would think it would be pretty close. Anyway, thank you for taking the time on putting together this video. Very well done and fun to watch. :-)
Best RUclips instructional ever! You saved me a bundle. Thanks.
That was one of the best walks I've seen. Thank you!

Great video, would like to to add a few things..for us weekend mechs.
The shift linkage barell nut is reversed thread on one end ,(look for the up arrow on the the nut, took my dumb ass an hour to figure this out).
Honda has replaced the carburetor 16100-ZV4-D21 with the 16100-ZV4-D22. just installed it and it works great. Thanks Again Doug

you make it look easy d-ray good vid
Great Video, Thanks
nice video, easy to follow, actually I used on my Mariner 9.9 almost same layout. Thanks
D-Ray thanks for this video it was well done.! One thing you mentioned was blowing out the potential impeller pieces from the top end or power-head. I'm just not sure if I must remove anything before applying compressed air to the water intake tube to get the best results.
I had the same question.. about to do mine if you or D.Ray want to update
Hey D-Ray...excellent video! I was searching for how to repair my Honda 7.5 4-stroke. I inherited it with a sailboat. When I start the outboard the water only spits out the output, not streaming like it should. Now I know what to expect when taking mine apart! Thank D-Ray!
Fantastic video well explained 👍
Good info. Same on the Yamaha 9.9
Excellent instruction video. You made my day and now I can troll on my Maine Lake. Thank you. Cliff

It's the same for a 1990 BF9.9A as well - THANK YOU!!
do you know if there is a key that goes on the driveshaft? i just replaced the impeller on my 1990 bf9.9a and im still not getting water to the thermostat? i also put some compressed air through all the galleries and still nothing.
Nicely Done, Thank you.
Very good tutorial

Excellent video. Getting ready to do my Honda 15 horsepower but it's a 2005. Hoping there's nothing different that I should know.
