Probably the best video I’ve seen for repair! You have a gift to teach and your delivery is entertaining. The add-ins from your daughter and wife made my wife and I laugh! Thanks again!
Nice vid- things to add, everything on a Yamaha is metric. I wouldn’t use grease inside your cooling system. For the -o-rings it’s ok but for the impeller no. Instead just use a little soap. That way you don’t get any grease build up in your cooling system inside the motor.
Thanks Exoman for you help on overhauling Yamaha water pump. Video was very professional and well put together without the BS other guys do. Appreciated the humor and "photo bombing" too 😁
@@exoman i just test run the pump i serviced a few weeks ago and it works perfectly. Only thing is forward and reverse gear engage on throttle but prop doesn't turn. Any suggestions?
That was such a big help. I took it to the boat shop, to get the pump. Well they helped take it apart. But we couldn't remember how to put it back together. Your video was such a big help. It was like you was there with me telling me step by step. Thanks!
Great video, everything went pretty smooth on disassemble and reassemble. Water came out right away once the hose turned on. Tried the shift and it would not go forward or reverse. When I slid the housing back in it I twisted it a little it went to about a 1/4"-1/2" from being flat up against the upper unit. Then bolted it in place. I guess I'll pull it apart and try it again.
The Thermostat is easy to change, it will corrode and stick. There are anodes in the engine block that corrode also. Thanks for the good video, I'll be doing mine this week. chuck
great good i have done them on mercs, now i have 2023 yamaha and they do not want water muffs on their outboards so dock side or over size water can , i use the huge trash can on wheels and install a drain valve at the bottom of the trash can to drain water when done testing
Thank you Exoman for the great tips! Greasing the splines, the cup, the impeller, the bolts,O-rings, and especially the woodruff key! Mine was fully corroded and I had to drill 4 holes in it and heat up the shaft to get it off! So guys, make sure you grease things up it up!
I had to do every step 3 times to get it right,o rings popped out, couldn't get impeller into cup, couldn't get the spacer ring to come off the plastic spacer probably pay for it next time lol
He forgot to attach it, had to pull it apart again for that. Also, wouldn’t use grease on seals, (expands and dries rubber sometimes) but use superlube- silicone based
Thanks! Great video. Kind of nail-biting waiting for the pee-indicator to start flowing, huh?! My first thought was that it had an enlarged prostate. ;)
why put grease around the impeller this part take the water to inside the engine Does the grease go inside the engine? I think it's blocking the cooling ducts.
Hello, excellent job, I have a Yamaha 115 but I haven't changed the water impeller in years and now it can't get the tail out, because the shaft is stuck somewhere and it doesn't come out downwards, even when hitting very hard, do you have any idea? How to remove the axle completely. Greetings from the island of Mallorca Spain.
Old news now, but my 115 (SHO) takes a solid 30-60 seconds to start peeing too. Had me freaked out for awhile when trying to test it, starts much quicker on the water though. Apparently this is not abnormal according to googling. :)
Hey this is John affordable decks down here in Tuscaloosa Alabama I like your video you explained everything in detail that's a good idea using the old water pump to beat that thing down thumbs up buddy yeah and your wife's hot too
One very important thing you failed to mention and do was lifting up on the shaft when you were seating the collar metal cup with your invention. 😮 there is a little play in the up and down of the shaft, to be correctly positioned and seated
As I recall, it had slowed or stopped circulating. Just watch that port where the circulating (engine cooling) water shoots out from the side of your motor. If the motor is running it needs to always be coming out or there. Best to you!
What a crappy design by Yamaha. That metal collar won't come off the plastic for me. That part should have come in the kit because it probably seizes a lot. Thanks Yamaha for such a dumb design. I suggest before you start that you also buy a new collar kit in case it's needed. Better to have on hand than wait for days with your lower unit apart. Also if the collar is taking more than 5 min to remove, cut it off with a hacksaw.

Well that is perhaps more of a compliment than I deserve. Thank you for the kind words.

As crazy as it sounds I use spray cooking oil, doesn’t hurt the o-rings like fuel or grease can, and water washes it away
@@adamdowning3892another benefit is its fast and easy and doesn’t get hands all greasy 😊
Great how to video, plus the bonus cameos of the always beautiful Jenn, and the equally beautiful Destyn
I just bought a used pontoon boat with an identical Yamaha 115. This was a very informative video.

That trick with the old impeller was great! Thanks you walked me thru this exactly on my 13 115!
The big old style aluminum trash cans work great for holding the lower unit while you work on it.

Thank You!! This was one of the best videos on how to replace the pump.

Just replaced the water pump on this same engine. So helpful! Thanks.

I will do it by myself and save my money ❤ thank you very much
Great video, and great looking family. You're living the dream!
Too kind, thanks so much!
Also a 7/8 wrench works too for lightly tapping the metal cup in place , in case your old impeller isn’t usable 😊
Great video thank you I'm doing mine tomorrow I like the idea of using the old impeller to drive the cup on.
Great job Exoman very nice video i work for a marina here in Michigan working on outboard motors for 30 years. PS Have a great summer.
Thank you Mike. I hope it didn't make you cringe watching a novice work on an $8,000 motor :-)
Is it possible for lower unit to go back on and bolt up and miss the splines on this shaft? 3:33

Nice video, but how did you attatch the speedometer tube with the lower unit pushed up in place?
He forgot to attach it, had to pull it apart again for that. Also, wouldn’t use grease on seals, (expands and dries rubber sometimes) but use superlube- silicone based
Great video. I will be taking this project on this year.
Great video. I found that trimming the engine helps it pee a little sooner. We are otherwise just waiting on the thermostat to open.
Exoman the newer outboards have a thermostat in them that is wiy it took time for the water to come out . the older outboards do not.
Thank you Wa. Prepper. That is really helpful info!
@@exoman We no that movie stars do not no every thing.
They all have thermostats or else they won't have proper combustion.

GREAT thorough video!
Thank you Sean!
Good vid thanks. I think it took so long to prime cause you went a bit overboard on greasing the impellor.
People should know some greases eat o-rings . good video

What year was this motor
At what point in engine performance do you go ahead and change this out? I’ve got a 9 yr old Y115 that runs strong and pees well too!
I am not sure, I had lost circulation and that is why I replaced this one.
At 9 years the rubber is old and stiff, make sure you buy OEM otherwise they use cheep rubber and it won't last a week.
Nicely done!!!
What kind of grease are you using?
Id use superlube on any area in contact with rubber.
Marine grease splines and light coat on metal shaft
why put grease around the impeller this part take the water to inside the engine
If you have someone push the muffs tightly against the lower unit when you start the motor then it should start pumping water almost immediately.
I have the same motor , I also have a cavitation plate. Does that have to come off to take off the water pump?
This bolt that held the cavitation plate on my motor had to be removed as I showed in the video, in order to release the lower unit. Good luck!
What year is that motor?
Can you please post the part number? I have a 2008 F115TXR and when i search i find 2 different ones.
Hey, just saw this. I looked in my ebay history and foun what i purchased, it was this kit. Repair Kit: 68V-W0078-00-00 68VW00780000 Good luck!
My woodruff key is stuck. Rusted in? Any ideas?
Not sure other than gently tapping it out with small screw driver and hammer. Good luck.

Their is a difference between cheap and frugal. People who are cheap don't buy OEM parts.
Yeah, we cant have Jen stranded out on the river......
People really need a video for a water pump😂
too much advertise, I don't inted watch the video
