  • Larry Bird was a dedicated and committed member of the Boston Celtics during the 80s and 90s, resulting in one of the greatest careers in NBA history. He made everyone around him exponentially better with his high IQ passing, relentless shooting and scoring, and his instincts on the defensive end. His rivalry with Magic Johnson that spilled over from college is regarded as one of the few ways the NBA was saved in the 1980s. No one can belittle his accomplishments and many players have been left in awe of his game.
Today’s video will be about NBA players talking about how insanely good Larry Bird was.
Bird had an impact on the game that every modern-day player should be thankful for. You have to be pretty darn talented to rival a player like Magic Johnson as well as take home 3 MVP awards, 3 championships, and 2 Finals MVP awards. Each of their legacies speaks for itself and will be remembered forever in NBA history. Today we’ll discuss comments made by NBA players who recognize Larry Bird’s legendary status. Before we begin today, make sure to like the video and subscribe to our channel for more interesting NBA content.
    Let’s keep rolling.
Michael Jordan entered the NBA at the height of the Magic Johnson and Larry Bird rivalry. As the Chicago Bulls were in the East Conference, “His Airness” was pitted against “Larry Legend” numerous times in the regular season and the playoffs. The Celtics’ superior roster and experience allowed Bird to have a distinct edge over Jordan in head-to-head battles. However, Bird wasn’t just relying on his team to carry him. It was the other way around as the Celtics’ franchise player made the Green Machine one of the best teams ever in NBA history. Jackie McMullan, in The Ringer’s Icons Club, pulled up a classic of what Michael Jordan thought of his rival:
“I get so many questions about Larry Bird. The thing is, ‘Was he really that good?’ I say, ‘Yeah! He was really that good. White, black, green or yellow, he was really that good! When you see a player like Luka when you see a player like Dirk, they’re great players, but they’re not Larry Bird, by no means."
Coming from Michael Jordan himself, that was the ultimate praise any player could get. Considered by many to be the best to play the game, MJ had a front-row ticket to the legendary exploits of the man who was truly the “Great White Hope” for the Boston Celtics. Even more mind-boggling was Larry Bird’s performance from 1980-1989. He was already a dark horse for the MVP in his rookie season and never dropped below fourth place in the annual best player award. Larry Legend was a lock in the top two in the MVP voting for six straight seasons.
Rex Chapman said he hated Larry Bird before he came around and acknowledged Bird's greatness.
Chapman said Bird started calling out his own plays, and scored or assisted on Boston's first four possessions. "We no longer had Tripucka on him."
"There are only so many greats who can go out there and mess around with the game and still be great," Chapman said.
"I liked guarding him until he scored because he wasn’t athletic. He was slow," Chapman said. "You can keep him in front of you. And he still scored!"
And where does Bird rank all-time with Chapman?
"Anytime anybody puts out a top 5 without Larry in it, I go, 'What are you doing?' He was amazing."
LeBron James is mentioned in the GOAT conversation more than any other player barring Michael Jordan since he won against the Golden State Warriors improbably with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2016. Returning to his hometown team and delivering a championship after decades of failure against the winningest regular-season team in NBA history convinced several people that LBJ might be the GOAT.
James himself may agree at this juncture in his career, but that was not always the case. 2013 saw James win his 2nd ever NBA championship with the Miami Heat.
“Best 3 players of all time? Michael Jordan… Wow, this is tough. Michael Jordan, Dr. J, Larry Bird.”
"When I got to the NBA and played for the Lakers, I watched as many Celtics games as I could so I could keep track of what he was doing," Johnson said. "He became my measuring stick. The first time we played head-to-head in the Finals, in 1984, Larry got the best of me.
Bird anchored Boston’s sustained success behind his dominance on the court. It pitted the Celtics against their hated rival Lakers.
And what is your opinion? Do you think Larry Bird belong in the top 5 NBA players of all time? Do you think he would be dominant if he played now? I would love to hear what you guys think so please let me know what you think in the comments. Oh, and don’t forget to like the video and subscribe to our channel for more amazing NBA content. Bird was without reservation the greatest player of all time. Has anyone else as team leader had the ability and example to raise the level of his game several notches to perfection whenever he needed to like in clutch last minutes shots. What other player could take a formally historic Celtic team with 29 wins 53 losses the year before he came to 61-21 an incredible unmatched performance and he was the only addition that year completely ready to play fantastically with no learning curve that virtually everyone else required. McHale, Parish, Walton, D.J. Ainge came later. How many other players raised so many teammates to the level of Hall of Fame players like Kevin McHale who said he raised me to a level of play that I thought I could never accomplish. No one else could perform every single facet of the game, dribbling, unbelievable assist passing, steals, rebounding, even defensively, unmatched shooting ability from anywhere on the court even when falling as perfectly as Bird as Jerry West recognized and on which he commented. He always was in the right place at the right time with his clairvoyant and all seeing mind abilities, such as the famous interception of an inbound pass against Detroit with 3 seconds remaining and pass to Dennis Johnson for the winning layup with whom he had a mind link and who knew instantly to race toward the basket to receive the pass from Bird and layup the winning bucket all in a split second. Incredible. That game was considered lost by everyone including Bill Walton. Look at his face before the play and after to see the look of total surprise and joy as if a miracle had happened, which it was. Is there any other player in all history that could have created such an atmosphere where a play like that could be made. The crowd went nuts like nothing I've ever seen with any team, a situation Bird created on many occasions like the 1984 7th game win against the Lakers when the adoring fans completely abd ecstatically filled the playing court; and also when he retired on a night no game was played and it was a sellout crowd. When has that ever happened? This was unbridled Love for Larry Bird. Number one of all time, so sayeth Michael Jordan in the RUclips show praising Mr. Bird.

I saw some great shooters where I grew up in NOJO, but Bird was better than anyone I ever saw shoot the rock. Ice water in his veins when it came to clutch time. Truly a Unicorn. Add that to EVERY other facet of his game, well, his Jersey should have been retired as #33 with the name GOAT on it in the rafters at Boston Garden. I am a Knicks fan forever, never liked the Celtics...they were rivals...but man, could not help but watch Bird in amazement. Nothing like him before or since.

Larry Bird was not among the top five players of all time. Any truly objective study of players can only conclude: LARRY BIRD WAS THE GREATEST PLAYER TO PLAY BASKETBALL, HANDS DOWN, AND NO ONE WILL EVER COME ALONG WHO WILL EVER BE CLOSE, SO UNIQUE WERE HIS ABILITIES, ALONG WITH BEING A SAVANT OF THE GAME. One story tells a lot. On the courts in basketball crazy Indiana in French Lick, Larry and his friends would be out there every day often playing against each other. One time Larry made a move which the two other kids thought was a really great move which Larry thought was just a way to play which came naturally to him. The two kids tried hard to duplicate the move and couldn't do it. Larry thought as he said later something really clicked inside me when they couldn't make the move. That is why Larry could call his shots and would say you can't stop me because no one else developed such moves always relying on their athletic abilities completely. And no one could stop him even in the last second where everyone in the building knew Larry would get the ball to make the clutch shot time after time after time; the greatest clutch shooter of all time with the ability to raise his game at will to make 10, 12 shots in a row to overcome a huge deficit; the greatest player of all time. No debate.

Here is something else often overlooked, and compare it to the modern NBA players.
The first 9 seasons Larry Legend played, he AVERAGED a little over 95 games played per season.
And in those 95+ games played per year, he averaged over 41 minutes per game !!
And that was 80's NBA BB, which was multiple times tougher than todays game, it is not even close.
( if in doubt, check the clothesline on Kurt Rambis in the playoffs, which resulted in 2 free throws for Rambis ! )
Then consider this current crop of stars, all making way north of 30 mil, and they are 'rested constantly thru the season ,
no back to backs, load management etc etc..... and it now is a flagrant 1 if you even brush a couple of hairs on their head.
Larry Legend was unbelievable, and played every part of the game like no other.

Well found and written, FreewayJammin! These are the kind of stats that get overlooked all the time, but make ALL of the other stats either more or less relevant. People talk about Larry Legend and eventually the question always gets asked (as it was at the end of this video), "...would Larry Bird dominate in todays game?" These numbers, in context with everything else we already know about him, are the closest thing we have to answering that question and it seems the answer is irrefutably and enthusiastically, "Yes, he f**king would!"

Bird is the best all around player to ever step on the court. Statistically, he is better than Michael Jordan in almost every major category. He just is, like it or not. Basically tied on FG%. Bird had a higher Effective FG%. Bird was a better 3 point shooter, a better free throw shooter, had more assists, had WAY more rebounds, played more minutes, fouled less, turned the ball over less, was a much better passer than Jordan, and was arguably the most clutch shooter to ever play in the NBA. And Bird got more rebounds and assists than Jordan, even though he played 175 games LESS than Jordan. Bird is the only player in NBA HISTORY, to retire with averages of at least 20ppg/10rpg/5apg. Bird had 24.3/10/6.3.

Larry Bird had success at every level of basketball and had the ability to mesh with and improve everyone on his team. Look at what he did at Indiana State and then went to a 29 win team and with a new coach and 1 change in the roster ( ML Carr) was the main reason Boston won 61 games that year. He was clearly the ROY and then in the next 8 seasons ( before the heel surgeries and back issues) for the MVP was 2,2,2,1,1,1,3 and then 2nd again. He was the creator of the 50-40-90 club and did it for 2 seasons in a row (87 and 88) and he just missed in 85 and 86 AND if you total his stats for those 4 years, Bird actually shot 50-40-90 over 4 consecutive seasons. Bird won three 3 point shoot-outs and never really practiced the 3 point shot as it never existed for him in high school or college. In his first 9 years in games Bird played, Boston won 534 games and lost 177 games for a win % of 75.1% and this was in the stronger Eastern conference. Bird made 3 all defensive teams ( 2nd team) and in 1983 finished tied for 3rd place for the DPOY award. Bird led the league in defensive win shares 4 times and was 7 times in the top 5 in DWS. Here is a link of a young Bird ( with a 28 inch vertical) from the November 9th issue from 1981 from SI on page 84 blocking Kareem's skyhook! vault.si.com/vault/1981/11/09/70982#&gid=ci0258c132a001278a&pid=70982---102---image

Stockton, Jordan, L Bird, Malone(duncan), Wilt. Except for Wilt, I watched 40 years of NBA from 85 to 22 and I can say what made Jordan who he is Dr. J and Bird. Athleticism for Dr. J, mindset and diversity from Bird.

As much as I appreciate and enjoy these types of videos, I wish that the person that narrates the stories would take the time to research his/her script and learn the proper enunciation of players names. Not only does the mispronunciation affect the video, but it can also be considered an insult to the player. Just my bit of advice as it seems to be occurring often. No offense intended as I understand the effort and work necessary to edit and produce these videos.

There was 3 players in the NBA you NEVER 'woke' up. MJ, DrJ and Larry 'LEGEND'. Only one that would tell you the 'next play' then shoot it in your face, Larry! But Bird can't dunk (see highlight film)he can;t rebound (see stats)......my favorite was "he'll never make it in the NBA. (see HOF film) Ever see film of MJ & Bird greeting the other after retirement? Usually its "Bitch" what are you doing here? LOL Only the really great do that.

It's funny how Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain are not mentioned in the GOAT category, when they are the top 2 and others in the past. After Dr. J's air show post 1976(after ABA ended) and Kareem, then Bird and Magic came in the league pretty much together. The 80's may have been the greatest period in basketball (so far). The intensity of the rivalry of Celts vs Lakers was reignited and magnified. They were the Top 2 teams. Dr. J's Sixers, The Bad Boys, Houstons Twin Towers, etc. were added to the mix. Lots of fun and intense competition. When Bird and Magic came 1979/80, immediately their teams rose up. However, when MJ came in 1984, it wasn't until the addition of Pippen 87/88, they had a great team. By then, Bird was injured. Magic was dealing with AIDS(1990). The Bad Boys were a top team 1988-90. It wasn't until 1991 that Bulls won their first Championship and ran over everyone even their rival, the Bad Boys. Thank you for video..
