Larry Bird was my dads favorite sports athlete. We sat together and watched every Celtics game on TV throughout the 80s and we would just whoop and holler at the crazy things he would do on the court. Memories with my dad that I’ll always cherish. Thanks Legend!

But I'm not sure Larry could win a ring if he coached longer because Indiana was a small-market team. Great get Austin!👌 As a Lakers fan, I hated Larry when I was just a young tot. Now, I have the ultimate respect for him, his career, and the competitive spirit he showed during his amazing career. The span he had from '84 to '88 was simply phenomenal! Had he not been so devastated from his injuries, especially his back, we might have seen him play a few more years, and also seen him play at a higher-level after '88! To this day, I don't think there has ever been a smarter player than Larry in NBA history. His lightning-quick decision-making and ability to see the whole floor was next-level!
Laker fan also, Showtime is/was so seductive....Damnit Bird just flat out killed everyone. Not even close. HATED the Celtics. Lakers - Celtics is peak NBA; Team rivalry vs. individuals as well.

He was the ultimate TEAM player. Saying that he could care less about getting a quadruple double and mentioning TEAM several times shows what he knew was most important. Great interview- you had him discuss many of the highlights and stories that we hear about him.
Great interview and thanks for sharing this!! Many people do not remember that Bird did not have a 3 point line in high school or in college. The NBA 3 point line was new to the NBA in Bird's rookie season. Bird's first coach Bill Fitch hated the 3 point shot and evidently so did KC Jones. Can you imagine how good of a 3 point shooter Bird would be today being able to practice it growing up!! Bird created the 50-40-90 club and did it 2 seasons back to back (87 and 88) and was so close in 85 and 86 that if you total Bird's stats for those 4 years = Bird actually averaged 50-40-90 over 4 consecutive seasons. I also liked how Bird thought the "trash talk" was really for the court and players only but Bird's trash talk was so good and so funny that the opposing players and coaches and his own teammates were so entertained that they felt compelled to tell them and we are lucky to hear them. I have always felt Bird was the most complete and best overall player I have ever seen!!
Larry Bird would be absolutely great in today's game with his all-around game, his size, and especially his shooting. Imagine Bird actually practicing the 3 everyday and then all his attempts. Remember that Bird shot 50/40/90 twice. I think he'd do much better in today's game and as things stand, he's one of the best shooters ever.

Anyone who thinks Larry Legend couldn't dominate in a league that Jokic rules and Luka prospers, is just foolish. Speed is great and all, but a great half-court player who can do everything will always be highly dangerous, especially in the playoffs. Just imagine KD with a bit less speed, but far more basketball IQ, rebounding, tenacity, clutch genes AND heart... I ain't hating on KD, it's just the truth. 🤷🏼♂️

I just want to say this is my idol. I grew up 3 miles from Boston and I’m a huge Celtics fan. It makes me sad to see Larry at this age. I always saw highlights of him in his 20s. But to see him like this makes me a bit sad. I guess that’s what happens with all our idols. Larry, you are the best Celtic ever and your autobiography is amazing. I wish you were more involved in todays media so I could see you more often. Be a host on ESPN or something please.

I wish I would have seen or been able to see him play. I was 8 when he started playing with the Celtics. But I was raised in a male dominated Lakers fan family. You could tell when the two played. That was when it was dangerous to enter the room the game was played in. Larry really riled my uncles up. Larry was like the JR Ewing of basketball to me. Ruthless, scary & mysterious. Three years ago I went down the Larry Bird rabbit hole. I'm so glad I did. Now I know why he got to my uncles so bad. Larry was amazing. Playing & STILL dominating with all the injuries he had. He WAS a lethal marksman. If all the stories are true about his trash talking. That makes me love him even more. So hilarious. Such a shame players weren't mic'd up back then. For those who don't have these videos in their algorithm, a Gen Alpha viewer.. who normally is a LeBron fan, Curry fan, sometimes a Kobe fan.. they watch highlights of the 80s & 90s NBA. And the consensus is usually positive. Having watch the NBA for 4 decades now, it goes to show how Larry's game has inspired many of the stars today. As simple as running backwards to get prepared on D.. to Larry's trash talking. Everyone respects the Hick from French Lick for his career and the accomplishments he did.
My best friend and I worked for Sports Channel New England in the early to mid 1980's. We could sit wherever we wanted to sit, go wherever we wanted to during home games at The Garden. We were allowed to shoot on the court before games. Mostly behind the visiting teams bench. I was behind Barkley when he went up into the stands after a fan. The only way to truly appreciate the level of play is from the court level. What a trip. So grateful for that experience.
Dude you were truly blessed. In texas I scheduled my life around cbs and tbs Celtics coverage. If they would have had nba network then I would have been a worhless unemployed single person because i would have been there all 82 plus playoffs in my man cave.

It's amazing that he won in 1984 against the Lakers, who had a prime Kareem and Magic Johnson along with James Worthy and Jamal wilkes. Definitely overcame the odds to win.

Being from the New England area this is wonderful to see. I have not watched basketball much after Larry retired. Just about saw it all those years. I feel blessed to have the Celtics 🍀 as our regional basketball team. Glad you got this interview and it’s great to see Larry talking this much.

Good point that is reflected upon. It is the work that was put in practicing that hones the skills of the great players. It is great to hear his respect for players on other teams. One of the greatest games I saw was when Larry Bird and Dominic Wilkens got into a shoot out and yet Larry has great respect for Dominic. Larry Bird is the GOAT of the NBA.
Fortunate to have been born in 1966. Living in Cincinnati all my life. I got to see The Big Red Machine along with countless great sports moments. Having said that, watching Larry and those Celtic teams were the highlight of my sports week. Thanks Larry, many of us will never forget you or those teams. I know I won't.
I'll never forget that day in June 1986 when I was up close to the Celtics trucks in the victory parade. Parish was looking really strong, and Ainge was busy talking to someone. McHale was giving fives to the crowd and I got one. Larry was there with both hands in the air and his girlfriend was by his side. Larry gave us many happy hours in Boston. I drove down with my brother from New Hampshire for the parade.

I just want to say this is my idol. I grew up 3 miles from Boston and I’m a huge Celtics fan. It makes me sad to see Larry at this age. I always saw highlights of him in his 20s. But to see him like this makes me a bit sad. I guess that’s what happens with all our idols. Larry, you are the best Celtic ever and your autobiography is amazing. I wish you were more involved in todays media so I could see you more often. Be a host on ESPN or something please.

Fantastic job!!! He looks great. Please don't let this be the last time we see him in a sit down interview. I love hearing his stories. I'm a new fan of Larry's. I wish I would have seen or been able to see him play. I was 8 when he started playing with the Celtics. But I was raised in a male dominated Lakers fan family. You could tell when the two played. That was when it was dangerous to enter the room the game was played in. Larry really riled my uncles up. Larry was like the JR Ewing of basketball to me. Ruthless, scary & mysterious. Three years ago I went down the Larry Bird rabbit hole. I'm so glad I did. Now I know why he got to my uncles so bad. Larry was amazing. Playing & STILL dominating with all the injuries he had. He WAS a lethal marksman. If all the stories are true about his trash talking. That makes me love him even more. So hilarious. Such a shame players weren't mic'd up back then. His full court passes are my favorite. Under, over, left or right handed.....poetry in motion.

its incredible how YT reactors have made this guy a "legend" all over again. For those who don't have these videos in their algorithm, a Gen Alpha viewer.. who normally is a LeBron fan, Curry fan, sometimes a Kobe fan.. they watch highlights of the 80s & 90s NBA. And the consensus is usually positive. Having watch the NBA for 4 decades now, it goes to show how Larry's game has inspired many of the stars today. As simple as running backwards to get prepared on D.. to Larry's trash talking. Everyone respects the Hick from French Lick for his career and the accomplishments he did.

My best friend and I worked for Sports Channel New England in the early to mid 1980's. We could sit wherever we wanted to sit, go wherever we wanted to during home games at The Garden. We were allowed to shoot on the court before games. Mostly behind the visiting teams bench. I was behind Barkley when he went up into the stands after a fan. The only way to truly appreciate the level of play is from the court level. What a trip. So grateful for that experience.
Dude you were truly blessed. In texas I scheduled my life around cbs and tbs Celtics coverage. If they would have had nba network then I would have been a worhless unemployed single person because i would have been there all 82 plus playoffs in my man cave.

He's the G.O.A.T. Larry Joe Bird was the best player ever seen. Mad respect for the Man ♂️. He just played on a different LEVEL than everyone else. Enjoyed watching you play Larry Bird and sadly I don't like the way the game is being played today. And I haven't seen a NBA Basketball 🏀 game since the 90's and I won't watch it again. TOO soft and TOO many 3 point shots and it looks STUPID. A bunch of Players standing around the 3 point line is a JOKE. Today's NBA game stinks and I refuse to watch a soccer game when they should be playing Basketball.
It's amazing that he won in 1984 against the Lakers, who had a prime Kareem and Magic Johnson along with James Worthy and Jamal wilkes. Definitely overcame the odds to win.

The greatest, not only in every position on the court and good do anything at anytime to anyone but how ridiculously humble he can be being such a legend. Every kid that starts playing ball should watch tape after tape after tape of Larry in the 80's. I'm beyond lucky to have grown up in his era.
Larry revitalized the NBA in the 80’s. He was so exciting to watch, I wouldn’t think of missing a game on tv or going to a game when I was fortunate to attend. So many good memories attached to those days! Simply the Best, that’s Larry Bird. ⭐️❤️🙏

Good point that is reflected upon. It is the work that was put in practicing that hones the skills of the great players. It is great to hear his respect for players on other teams. One of the greatest games I saw was when Larry Bird and Dominic Wilkens got into a shoot out and yet Larry has great respect for Dominic. Larry Bird is the GOAT of the NBA.

Fortunate to have been born in 1966. Living in Cincinnati all my life. I got to see The Big Red Machine along with countless great sports moments. Having said that, watching Larry and those Celtic teams were the highlight of my sports week. Thanks Larry, many of us will never forget you or those teams. I know I won't.
I'll never forget that day in June 1986 when I was up close to the Celtics trucks in the victory parade. Parish was looking really strong, and Ainge was busy talking to someone. McHale was giving fives to the crowd and I got one. Larry was there with both hands in the air and his girlfriend was by his side. Larry gave us many happy hours in Boston. I drove down with my brother from New Hampshire for the parade.
He doesn’t hurt his back and it’s Jordan Bird in the same conversation best all time he’s still top 10 to me easy.

Wish I heard your questions to Larry better. I had season tickets at the Garden for all of Bird's years. No instant replay in those years so we would have to watch the news to see those remarkable shots again. Lots of great memories!

Like how u acknowledged today's game, but still should shouted out a lot of old school players, when the interview was about u! Just a couple of suggestions! One, it's a bit hard to hear the questions, so turned the subtitles on, and secondly, this interview/video would pack-a-punch if you had video supplements to some of the responses he gave!
