Great video! Bird had one physical attribute that most greats did and do not have - endurance. Bird's high school basketball coach emphasized running. Bird continued to do extra miles in college and during his NBA years. That's why he was so dominant in the fourth quarter - he was not as tired as his opponents. Explosive athletes have to rest. That's why Dr. J, Dominque, Jordan, and Kobe can be seen resting on the wings during games. Bird was constantly moving.

Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, and Julius Erving were iconic figures in the NBA in the 1980s.
In the NBA until the 1970s, powerful center players such as Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar determined the outcome of games and the superiority of teams. However, the emergence of players like Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, and Michael Jordan showed that it was possible for players like guards and forwards to dominate the game. In this sense, Bird was one of the players who revolutionized the NBA and, by extension, basketball.

Great video as always, Skap Attack! MJ was right about Bird being the greatest forward (he played primarily PF for his 5 seasons prior to McHale's ascension to the starting lineup then SF for the rest of his career). After MJ, I'd put Bird and Hakeem right afterwards in terms of greatest regardless of position.
What is often exaggerated about Bird's lack of athleticism is that many of his equally famous contemporaries were more skilled than truly athletic freaks . For instance, Magic and Kareem were really tall, but neither were crazy fast, springy athletes like a Wilt, Dominique, Barkley, or Admiral. The other greatest PG of all time, Stockton, had huge hands but was also not blindingly fast or jumped high. Thus, the common trait to Bird, Magic, Kareem, MJ, Barkley, Stockton, Admiral, Dominique, and others were their tough mentality and competitiveness. Among them, Bird was probably only rivaled in that aspect by MJ, whose 11-23 record was obviously skewed by his teams still building while Bird's Celtics were already dynastic.
In current era, the closest thing to Bird would be Jokic, Doncic, and Dirk, but none of them have been good enough to sniff an all-defensive team. Plus, Bird was even more clutch. Just as MJ would average 50 pts/g in the current era, Bird would average 35p-12r-10a easily because of the current era's weak mentality, aversion to contact, and over-reliance on getting away traveling/flopping to inflate their stats.

Like a lot of casual fans, I thought athleticism meant only being able to run really fast, jump really high, lift very heavy things, and have a muscular body. Here's a more nuanced opinion on athleticism in an article by James Breese, "Unleashing Athleticism: The 10 Components You Must Know".
Before injuries, Larry Bird checks of all ten boxes on the list. And even with injuries, Larry could still cook hall of fame opponents with 8 out of 10 or 7 out of 10 of those boxes.
The Ten Components of Complete Athleticism
    1. Strength - the ability to create force
    2. Speed - the ability to minimize the time cycle of a given movement
    3. Power - the ability to create maximal force in minimal time
    4. Mental Resilience - the ability to push yourself out of your comfort zone
    5. Aerobic Capacity - the maximal amount of physiological work that an individual can do as measured by oxygen consumption
    6. Anaerobic Capacity - the maximal work performed during maximum-intensity short term physical effort
    7. Balance & Coordination - the ability to perform movements with precision and grace
    8. Agility - the ability to be nimble on your feet and move quickly from one movement pattern to another
    9. Stability - the ability to prevent movement in one part of the body while creating movement in another, thus protecting vulnerable areas
    10. Mobility - flexibility in motion, the range of motion through muscles and joints

Bird’s only flaw was that he literally had no room for growth. The moment he came into the league he had already reached his ceiling. 10/10 player. Magic had continue climbing to new heights in his game with clutch; offensive, and leadership. That’s why I rank Magic higher but for a 3 or 4 year span, Bird was was the GOAT of basketball.

Master Plumber, JJ Redick everyone! Please let's have some applause for that poor wyte soul who simply can't breathe under the weight of the Legend's boot on his throat. The only reason he argued the 3 point statistics in the first place is so he could find a way, in his mind, to be comparable to the man who terrorizes his dreams of being remembered as an actual player and not just a middle-aged boy with hurt feelings. Just like Larry, Jokic will own those "Athletes", and he'll continue to embarrass them no matter how high they jump, or how cool the step-back looks.

The sad thing about Bird and how everybody hypes Peak!Bird, is that Bird didn't even get to reach his prime properly.
He got injured in 85 I think, that was what, his 6th season? That's the period most superstars barely start experiencing their prime, which lasts for around 5 years before they start their decline.
Bird didn't even get his before he had to run damage contro,l all but doing Yoga mid games just to be able to play, and delay his decline, let alone get the chance to get better over the years.
We never got Peak!Bird, and we'll always wonder what that could have looked like given how mythical the legend of a practically Baby!Bird has become over the decades.

      Truth. And given that:
Bird is also the player who was 2nd place in MVP voting for 3 yrs from 1981 thru 1983.
And THEN, was League MVP for 3 years from 1984 thru 1986.
      1987 3rd
      1988 2nd again
followed by dbl Achilles surgery in 89 that he came back from to elite form.
      Definitely a Legend.

Bird was playing basketball on a PS5 processing unit when motherfuckers were still using colecovision and he was "restricted" by a lack of athleticism. He's the GOAT. Also Pat Riley said it best, "If I want someone to take the game winning shot I'll take Jordan, If I want someone shooting to save my life I'll take Bird".

Dr. J is mistaken about Bird's rookie season. Bird went to a 29 win team and with 1 player change to the roster in ML Carr and a new coach in Bill Fitch, Bird was the main reason Boston won 61 games = a 32 game turnaround. Bird won ROY over Magic by a big margin and was 4th in the MVP vote. For the next 8 seasons in the MVP Bird was 2,2,2,1,1,1,3, and 2nd again!!!

Larry Bird is tall and can move without the ball! He's 6'9", has a high release point on his shot, amazing footwork, and is the best trick passer in history. So, you're right that skill is more important, but it's important to know that Bird is not just skilled. If somebody thinks that Bird is unathletic, they just need to consider him a "power forward," in the traditional sense. You'll never see Tim Duncan, Dirk Nowitzki, Charles Barkley, Kevin McHale, Karl Malone, Kevin Garnett, nor Anthony Davis running around "without the ball" like him. And yet, he could guard those guys. That's a type of athleticism. To move like that without killing your body, while simultaneously guarding bigger dudes. He's quite possibly the most skilled player ever... but he's also very athletic in his own right!
However, I need to counter one pro-Bird statement in this video. The claim made by one of the players that Bird could do everything Magic could do is false. I used to think that, myself... but I just recently was watching game 1 of the 1984 NBA finals. And Magic makes the most insanely precise passes -- on demand -- and nearly every play -- that I've seen. Just absolutely wild. Bird is better at Jokic style trick passes. But Magic can quarterback a freaking team. And when you realize how bad the Lakers were on defense without Magic wearing down the other team when he had the ball (and that they went 7-9 in 1984 without Magic!!!!), you start to realize that Magic did not have as stacked of teams as people think. Kareem was only good on offense in the 80's (in the 80's, he was like Shaq.... he scored a lot of points, but he gave up a lot points... and nobody thinks about that!). On the flip side, if Bird wasn't able to play out-of-position for his whole prime, then the Celtics would never have been able to take advantage of McHale. How many other players can play "the wrong position," and become famous for being the best at that position? This is why my top 5 are 1) Mike 2) Kobe 3) Magic 4) Bird 5) Dr. J (he faced them all and was nearly their equal... when he was older and worn-down).
But phenomenal freakign video. I'm actually being hyper detailed, here. And it's only because you've encouraged me so much with your analysis. And everything you said is spot-on. Skill is far and away the most important thing, and Bird had it in spades. Yesteryear's players were more skilled at scoring in limited space. They would kiiiillll in this era. That would force opposing teams to expend more effort on defense, which would mean the old school guys would have be able to better handle the new guys' athleticism when they had to guard them. They'd be fresher.

If you were rooting for the other team, there was this constant feeling of DREAD because you just knew Bird was gonna go off and crush all of your dreams. AND this killer was WHITE to boot, so it felt like another case of “Whitey oppressing us Brothers” 🤣.
But seriously, Bird was just “That Guy”. Dude could tell you exactly what he was gonna do to you, then do it. Dude has to be the first forward you pick for any All Time NBA starting 5.

one thing i wish happened differently for Bird is that they didn't loss that finals against Magic.
The rivalry could have finish with *both 4 Rings, 3 MVP, 4 Fmvp, 12 NBA All Star, 9 First Team NBA*
Players/fans today disrespect old era's because they *play simple but effective basketball*
While players today play with what i will call *TOO MUCH SAUCE*
I understand that skills today are superior(dribbling, shooting, dunking) BUT the important thing is if they could get it done.
If any player could score, rebound, make assist and win as simple as he can but effective, then he is better than lots of any fancy players.
